  • How to calibrate Wacom tablets under Ubuntu Lucid?

    I've been using Wacom tablets on Linux for quite some time, almost exclusively in Ubuntu, and in previous versions I've used xidump to track input values. I would use that information to put calibration settings in my xorg.conf file. However, in the most recent Ubuntu release, this command does not exist, and the package wacom-tools that previously installed it has now been removed. Is there a new method for calibrating Wacom pads under Linux? Should I have been using a different method all along for obtaining this information?

  • What are modern and old compilers written in?

    As a compiler, other than an interpreter, only needs to translate the input and not run it the performance of itself should be not that problematic as with an interpreter. Therefore, you wouldn't write an interpreter in, let's say Ruby or PHP because it would be far too slow. However, what about compilers? If you would write a compiler in a scripting language maybe even featuring rapid development you could possibly cut the source code and initial development time by halv, at least I think so. To be sure: With scripting language I mean interpreted languages having typical features that make programming faster, easier and more enjoyable for the programmer, usually at least. Examples: PHP, Ruby, Python, maybe JavaScript though that may be an odd choice for a compiler What are compilers normally written in? As I suppose you will respond with something low-level like C, C++ or even Assembler, why? Are there compilers written in scripting languages? What are the (dis)advantages of using low or high level programming languages for compiler writing?

  • SCSI direct-access device appears as multiple lun's

    I have a similarly described problem to this question: http://superuser.com/questions/90181/same-scsi-drive-appears-multiple-times-on-the-controller-list where a SCSI direct-access device appears as multiple lun's, when it should only be one. The device is a SCSI-1 device, the SCSI controller card is an Adaptec AHA-7850 (rev 03), and system is PC / Linux 2.6. This device worked fine with RHEL4, and appeared as a single device / lun when the OS booted, but I've just tried plugging the device into a newer Linux disto (CentOS 5.4) and it now sees the device as 8 luns; with consequently 8 device files /dev/sgb to /dev/sgi. Any clues of how to figure out where the problem / fix is, would be great.

  • Windows SBS 2003 DNS taking over network

    I have Windows Small Business Server 2003 premium edition on my new server box, this hosts a webapp on IIS. It has set up a DNS Server to solve requests to the webapp. I have a linux server/router that has does DNAT and portforwards port 80 to the new box. My linux router serves as a firewall and dhcp When i plug the SBS2003 server to the network, it leaves everyone on my network without web browsing, it looks like the DNS requests are going to the new server. I configured the DNS forwarders on SBS2003 to my ISP dns but it doesnt work... Is there something i am missing?

    If a destructor throws in C++ during stack unwinding caused by an exception, the program terminates. (That's why destructors should never throw in C++.) If a finally block is entered in Java because of an exception in the corresponding try block and that finally block throws another exception, the first exception is silently swallowed. This question crossed my mind: Could a programming language handle multiple exceptions being thrown at the same time? Would that be useful? Have you ever missed that ability? Is there a language that already supports this? Is there any experience with such an approach? Any thoughts?

  • Kickstart installation: Unable to read package metadata

    I'm trying to install a CentOS OS with kickstart using HTTP as the installation source. The kickstart server and the installed server are both running on VMs on the same machine. after the anaconda system installer starts it fails with the following message: I tried installing two different versions of Centos(5.5 and 5.2), and they both pass a CDROM media test the manual installation provides.   • Upgraded Linux, now CMS Made Simple is spewing errors

    I upgraded my host from Debian Lenny to Debian Squeeze, and now my CMS Made Simple site is spewing PHP errors all over the screen. I thought I'd upgrade the CMS because I haven't done so in a while, but Google Chrome tells me that the CMS Made Simple site is infested with malware. What are my options now?   • OpenVPN on Android TCP retransmissions after OpenVPN server reboot

    I raised OpenVPN on server for the first time. It worked fine until the server rebooted. The firewall configuration is unchanged. When I tcpdump from tun interface on the server, I always get TCP retransmissions on all TCP packets larger than a few bytes in Android. Using a similar(read: same) configuration on my Linux box from where I'm posting this message now works just fine; no retransmissions, no loss. It did work just fine before the server rebooted. What could possibly cause this? I already tried rebooting Android, it didn't help. Client configuration, used on both Linux PC and Android tablet: dev tun client remote 192.168.0.1 persist-key persist-tun nobind pkcs12 user.p12 mssfix 1480 cipher AES-256-CBC verb 3 1480 is below the mtu of uplink connection on server which is 1492. I tried adding tun-mtu 1480 to Android but that didn't help either.

  • Cross platform support for network attached USB hubs?

    I am looking at network-attached USB hubs in order to run licensed software in a virtualized environment when hardware dongles are required. Are there any solutions that will work with both Linux and Windows? Most of the dedicated devices -- such as the Zonet ZUH2214 or the (oddly expensive) Digi AnywherUSB/2 -- appear to be Windows-only. Linux has the the USB/IP project, for which there appear to be Windows drivers, but the last "News" post on the site was in 2007, so I'm not entirely confident about the viability of the project. Has anyone out there found a solution that will work well in both environments?

  • Ignoring old multiple asynchronous ajax requests

    I've got a custom javascript autocomplete script that hits the server with multiple asynchronous ajax requests. (Everytime a key gets pressed.) I've noticed that sometimes an earlier ajax request will be returned after a later requests, which messes things up. The way I handle this now is I have a counter that increments for each ajax request. Requests that come back with a lower count get ignored. I'm wondering: Is this proper? Or is there a better way of dealing with this issue? Thanks in advance, Travis

    Apparently, there is a comparable alternative to the 200-line kernel patch that involves no kernel upgrade. It is presented here and discussed here. However, I am not sure if webupd8's solution (under the section "Use it in Ubuntu") on Ubuntu actually works or not. In particular, one commenter on ./ is saying he's getting an error message. Could anyone post the "correct" method that actually works? Suggested solution: Based on the comments I've read so far, the following seems to work.     Suppose I've installed linux on my flash drive. Why do I need something like casper loop file to make saving persistant? So files are being erased? Isn't flash drive the same as actual hard drive? I'm linux noob so be patient. Or it is because linux on flash drive is actually live cd on flash drive?     I'm converting a Wordpress blog to Drupal and need to map the WP paths to the new Drupal ones. What's the best practice for doing this? There are only around a hundred pages to map. I've been experimenting with the URL Alter module, which provides an alternative to messing with custom_url_rewrite functions settings.php but keep getting 404. Waiting to hear back from the module maintainer if this is what the module is intended for. In the meantime I am wondering how others do this? Should I be using .htaccess?

    I'm new to the Linux world so please bear with me! :-) I installed Ubuntu via USB drive onto my hard drive. If I boot the PC without the usb drive I used, Ubuntu will not load. After booting I can unplug without any consequences. I looked on the hard drive and there is a boot folder. If so, how do I get it to boot without the USB? I'm guessing copying into some location and modifying grub?
