  • Hardening Word and Reader against exploits

    I have recently heard a lot about exploits for PDF and DOC files on Windows, which when opened in Reader or Word would infect the computer. I'm assuming most of those exploits rely on some kind of active content, I've heard that Reader allows JavaScript for example. I already have antivirus, but I've heard they often don't catch those types of exploits, so I want to try a little proactive defense. Is there a way to harden Reader and Word by disabling plugins or options that are often used by exploits?

  • Directly printing to remote CUPS/IPP server on Snow Leopard

    I need to use Kerberos authentication when printing from my OSX machine, however, the machine itself does not have a service account in active directory, so the KDC will not issue a delegation ticket for the local CUPS installation. I think printing could work if the printing framework would directly print to the network CUPS server (or even to the Windows print server), bypassing the local CUPS. Is it possible to setup printing so that it directly accesses the remote print server? (asking for a service ticket for that server would succeed)

  • Cancelled a format using diskpart at 0%. Can I get the data back?

    I wanted to format my USB thumbdrive, but incorrectly did the following on my external HDD!! CMD -- Diskpart select disk 2 clean create partition primary select partition 1 active format fs=fat32 While it was still at 0% however, I cancelled the format and quit from CMD. I can no longer see the HDD in My computer though, and it shows up as below in diskpart Disk 1 Status - Online Size- 1800 GB Free - 0B Is there anything I can do to get the data and HDD back?

  • Release/Renew IP Address via Terminal in OS X

    I am looking to release and renew my IP address in OS X 10.4 using Terminal. Essentially, I need the OS X equivalent of Windows: C:\ ipconfig /release C:\ ipconfig /renew However, I need the interface to remain active during this process, so using ifconfig down/up will not work. I believe I can clear the IP with ifconfig delete but I'm not sure how to get the dhcp client to reassign the address. An article from 2002 suggests using set dhcp but Apple's ifconfig man page does not include this information.

I imagine it in the form of two piece software. the first part, some kind of dashboard with list of active IPs, is on the server and awaits for information from remote hosts, the second part will be on clients and it will be reporting that client is working.     If an office workstation is turned on, either in wake/sleep/logged off/logged in mode, is it possible to remote desktop into that workstation given that I have full admin priviledge to the Windows Server and Active Directory governing the authentication? What settings is required to check the status of the workstation as well as remote desktop sucessfully? Thanks. NB: There is no one in office. I connect via VPN to the Windows Sever.

The following ACL entry is active as the first rule that applies: {0}to dn.subtree="ou=some,ou=where,ou=beneath,dc=the,dc=rain,dc=bow" attrs=entry,children by users write Now the strange thing that happens is that given that rule I can add an entry to the respective DN but if I want to modify it with the very same user, then I get 0x32 (LDAP_INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS) Can someone give me a hint what the problem could be?

    Normally we create service accounts in Active Directory, and if we install things like SQL Server, etc, we set the software services we set them to use those service accounts. The service accounts don't have the ability to be used to log into a workstation interactively. For Proof of concepts, we're installing SQL Server and other software on Virtual windows 7 workstations that aren't part of a domain, so we are creating local accounts that will be used by windows services. Is it possible to stop those users from appearing as options on the login screen?

    I'm trying to measure would it be better to have prefork or worker mpm apache module for the server I'm working on, which is Amazon X-Large 15 GB memory 8 EC2 Compute Units (4 virtual cores with 2 EC2 Compute Units each) and that will run a Magento website with about 50 active users at once. Site serves a lot of images and about 45 requests per page. Images sometimes hang, so it seems worker would be a better option? Thanks

  • Exporting members of all DLs in an OU

    I'm trying to export all the members of all the DLs within an OU (either to a single file that's categorized or individual files). I tried to use: csvde -f "C:\Documents and Settings\root\Desktop\AD Export\DL Export\DL.txt" -r "OU=DLs,OU=Personnel,DC=csi,DC=org" -l "cn,mail" but that only works for individual DLs and there are a lot to input each time. Any help on getting this done in the most efficient pattern would be helpful.

  • Is it safe to run two instances of svnserve on one repository, or only one?

    We've two nodes running heartbeat/drbd, and one of the services we're using is subversion. What I want to know is: is it safe to run svnserve on both nodes all the time, or should it only run on the active node? Does svnserve use file-level locking, or is it all in memory?     I have a virtual host in apache which is redirecting requests to another web server. <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www ServerName another.host ProxyPass / http://another.host2:8081/ ProxyPassReverse / http://another.host2:8081/ </VirtualHost> I need to exclude an URL pattern from being catch by this virtual host. Basically I don't want requests with the url: http://another.host:8081/~username to be forwarded to the other server. Can this be done?
