• Xubuntu 14.04 resolution low

  I installed Xubuntu 14.04 amd64 on the computer at the computer repair shop where I work, but the screen resolution is way low, like 1024 x 768 (that wouldn't be low for a laptop or anything, but for a large desktop screen it is) I went to the display settings, but the resolution wouldn't go higher than that. When I installed Xubuntu 14.04 i386 at my computer at home, I didn't have any problems with the resolution. Any help? update: I ran lspci | grep VGA and got: 00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)

• small IIS web farm-create an Active Directory domain or no?

  We have a smallish web farm of < 5 Windows 2008 servers. Some do data, most do IIS hosting. Is it a good/bad idea to set up a domain controller and put all in the same "production" domain? We want to avoid a world where we have to sync multiple admin passwords between the boxes (or share admin credentials among the team). Presumably, the DC would be just another VM, so hardware cost doesn't enter into the discussion.

• How to use Fixedsys in the Gnome Terminal, or wherever monospaced fonts are required

  I think that the Fixedsys font is one of the most readable monospaced fonts for programming. It has zero antialiasing, with vertical lines mostly 2 pixels wide. Close to ideal for current monitor dot pitches, in my eyes (literally). After years of Windows at home (for family reasons) and Linux servers at work accessed through Cygwin on Windows (for company policy reasons), with Fixedsys as the shell and IDE font, I have decided to switch to the Ubuntu desktop. Eclipse and gedit are no problem, they accept the Fixedsys Excelsior TTF font. But the Gnome Terminal only accepts monospaced fonts. Although Fixedsys Excelsior is essentially monospaced, it contains larger glyphs (mostly for eastern languages), and also some ligatures. Since apparently ALL characters must have the same width for a font to be recognized as monospaced, Fixedsys Excelsior cannot be selected in all those contexts where monospaced fonts are required, including gnome-terminal. So what is the easiest/cleanest way to use a Fixedsys clone font in contexts that only accept monospaced fonts?

• IntelliJ with Maven compilation

  I have a project that needs Hibernate jars. I added them as dependencies in the pom.xml and Maven compiles my project well. However, in the IDE, all annotations and calls to Hibernate API are marked as unresolved (red). How could I get IntelliJ being able to resolve them ? Is there a way to use Maven when I click on Build Project ? (ctrl+F9) Also, I am confused with the concept of facets within IntelliJ. Do I need them, let's say JPA facets to enable Persistence assistant etc... or there's an option to let Maven take care about ?

• When following SRP, how should I deal with validating and saving entities?

  I've been reading Clean Code and various online articles about SOLID lately, and the more I read about it, the more I feel like I don't know anything. Let's say I'm building a web application using ASP.NET MVC 3. Let's say I have a UsersController with a Create action like this: public class UsersController : Controller { public ActionResult Create(CreateUserViewModel viewModel) { } } In that action method I want to save a user to the database if the data that was entered is valid. Now, according to the Single Responsibility Principle an object should have a single responsibility, and that responsibility should be entirely encapsulated by the class. All its services should be narrowly aligned with that responsibility. Since validation and saving to the database are two separate responsibilities, I guess I should create to separate class to handle them like this: public class UsersController : Controller { private ICreateUserValidator validator; private IUserService service; public UsersController(ICreateUserValidator validator, IUserService service) { this.validator = validator; this.service= service; } public ActionResult Create(CreateUserViewModel viewModel) { ValidationResult result = validator.IsValid(viewModel); if (result.IsValid) { service.CreateUser(viewModel); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } else { foreach (var errorMessage in result.ErrorMessages) { ModelState.AddModelError(String.Empty, errorMessage); } return View(viewModel); } } } That makes some sense to me, but I'm not at all sure that this is the right way to handle things like this. It is for example entirely possible to pass an invalid instance of CreateUserViewModel to the IUserService class. I know I could use the built in DataAnnotations, but what when they aren't enough? Image that my ICreateUserValidator checks the database to see if there already is another user with the same name... Another option is to let the IUserService take care of the validation like this: public class UserService : IUserService { private ICreateUserValidator validator; public UserService(ICreateUserValidator validator) { this.validator = validator; } public ValidationResult CreateUser(CreateUserViewModel viewModel) { var result = validator.IsValid(viewModel); if (result.IsValid) { // Save the user } return result; } } But I feel I'm violating the Single Responsibility Principle here. • Ubuntu install doesn't recognize kingston SSDnow sv 200 90g

  I'm trying install Ubuntu 12.04 on my new Kingston SSD Now SVP200S3/90G, but the installer doesn't list this disk to be installed. However gparted let me do any partitioning operation correctly. I've tryed with Ubuntu Studio and Ubuntu Desktop on different machines: Lenovo ThinkPad T400, Lenovo ThinkStation C20, MoBo ASUS Crosshair V formula. SATA controller in all machines has been set to AHCI and IDE operation and different SATA ports with no luck. The firmware on the SSD has been updated to V.503xxx (latest on kingston page) Any help is appreciated, regards!

I know about camera occlusion and have implemented it in 3rd person games, but I have no clue how I'd accomplish this in a first person game, since the camera doesn't move from the player at all. My driver is installed and activated, I have tried removing and re-adding the network, and various other fixes. • Virtualbox will run from 32bit installation CD but not 64bit.

  I am trying to set up Windows in Virtual Box, so I don't need to reboot in the rare occasion that I actually need it. The problem is, Virtual Box doesn't preform any errors when I insert the 32bit installation CD but when I try to use the 64bit installation; What!? I am already using the installation disc! I've checked my BIOS to see if I have SVM (AMD's version of VT) disabled and all I see is "Enabled" I have a K9N6PGM2-V2 motherboard A Triple Core AMD Athlon II A Nvdia NForce 430 integrated graphics card 4GB of RAM An 80GB IDE And a 1TB SATA I don't think the last three specifications matter but just in case XP I am pretty sure the CD isn't broken ( I am going to make sure in just a moment ), what could be the cause to this problem? Edit: The 64bit installation CD is not broken, but I found out when trying to install from the 32bit version that it's trying to upgrade, not preform a fresh install - Odd.
