• Best options for freelance or part-time programming? [closed]

  I apologize in advance if this is an inappropriate question for this SE. A few years back I was all set to study computer science and get a job programming, but went a totally different route and went into healthcare. I currently work as a paramedic on a rotating 24/48 schedule, so I have two days off for every day I work, and a decent bit of downtime on the days that I do work. I've been looking at ways to earn some extra money with all that spare time, and was wondering if it'd be worth the effort to try and find a part-time/freelance gig. I know HTML/CSS, PHP, and I'm pretty familiar with Python and Ruby (and Rails). Anyways, was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as what "skill set" would give me the best chance to be able to land a part-time/freelance gig. I realize this is a rather open-ended question but any direction is appreciated.

• How do I change the keyboard layout to a non-standard one on a Live (USB) session?

  I am running Ubuntu 13.04 in a Live (USB) session. My physical keyboard layout is called Bépo, it is the French language Dvorak method-based layout. I would like to change my input layout to this too. To do this, I tried booting in a French spoken session, then open the Keyboard Layout preferences app. Normally, to add a layout, you should click on the + sign and select your layout. However the list that appears is very short and does not contain what I want. On the contrary, on a persistent non-live installation, the choice of Bépo is present. This is also the case during an installation of Ubuntu. So I do I change the keyboard layout of my live session to the correct one?

  I have applied to couple of startups and most of them are asking to solve programming challenge before they start on the interviewing candidate. I have submitted couple of the solutions and all the time getting rejected in the initial screening. Now what I think is, they will see my coding style, algorithm and OOD concepts that I have used to solve the problem. Can you guys input more on it as what other details are taken into consideration and how can I improve my coding for getting selected. By the way, I did all my coding in either Java/Perl. EDIT I feel the biggest reason for rejection is code didn't work for couple of use cases.

It takes a lot of time and memorization effort to learn the different commands and various options/switches of the command line version. So I have a couple of questions (which are not necessarily mutually exclusive): 1) When would you bother learning/memorizing the commands in the command line version of a tool which also comes in a gui version ? 2) What tools should I learn the command line version of ? .... compilers ? version control system ? etc, etc

• Anti-depressant and programming: does it reduce your thinking and focusing abilities ?

  I wanted to ask your opinion on anti-depressants, since I took them daily for 3 years now, but I can't be sure if I'm less perfomant with them or without, since I never withdrawed. I'm still at school at the age of 25, still having some motivation problems (for example I can't get used to do something at school if I don't think it will teach me something), but I'm quite motivated to work in the video-game field, since I have some personnal projects in mind. I know C++ programming etc, I'm still learning techniques, but do you think I should try more to do my project instead of just following the work I'm assigned to ? Have you had experience with depression or anti-depressants ? How did it affect your work ? Do you think that being depressed or half-depressed can improve creativity ?   Is it my perception or is it reality that it is harder to get software development work in Silicon Valley, than in other population centers? My theory is that some of the best and brightest (and youngest) are all here. All working for the top tech companies. And, little ol' me, over 40, math degree (not at Standford or Berkeley), ok at algorithms, and with many skills with many programming tools and concepts, but not published, and not top my class has a bit of a tough time competing.   I'm a web developer. When I start designing a site, I use a framework to handle templating for me, even if it's just rack + erubis. What do non-developers do? If you want to implement a site in HTML and CSS without a framework running on a webserver, without frames, and without WYSYWIG tools like Dreamweaver... how do you avoid copy-and-pasting the HTML of your navigation (for example) on every single page you're writing? I feel stupid asking this because it seems like their must be an obvious answer, but for the life of me, I can't think of one right now.

  What is the correct way to implement hit or touch detection for non-rectangular sprites in Cocos2d? I am working on a jigsaw puzzle, so our sprites have some strange forms (jigsaw puzzle bricks). • Ubuntu One Music - 'Unable to Parse '2006-12-12T08:00:00Z' as integer (iTunes Non-DRM AAC)

  Good Morning; Title says most of it, uploaded a new song to my U1 Music (via my Android using the Files app). Which is an recently purchased iTunes .m4a song, so is non-DRM AAC. Uploaded fine, and browsing in U1 Music I see artist "Spray" fine, and then the Album, but attempting to open the Album to the song, returns: "'Unable to Parse '2006-12-12T08:00:00Z' as integer" Not sure if it's a problem with the file itself, or just how Android uploaded the file, as that is clearly a weird date code. All my other music is fine, no errors, and the service works awesome. My U1 account is under the e-mail address used for this question. Thanks!

What i see is already there MPI/ Bit torrent/Jabber protocols / APIs / servers for messaging LAN / wire and other infrastractural cabels for connecting Boost and analogs on evry OS in most languages for multithreading there are lots of CUDA like on computer frameworks for fast calculating on computers GPUs What I personally do not see out there is a crossplatform framework for multiple processes interaction. Meaning one that would allow easy creation of multyple processes running in paralell inside one hoster app on one machine. In level not harder than needed for threads creation (so no seprate server apps - just one lib doing it all) Is there ny such lib and what can you propose for research topic?

• Starting Game Programming in C++, where to begin for optimal cross-platform development?

  I wish to begin learning game development in C++. I have knowledge in syntax and the console using Visual C++ 2010, however I want to begin programming. My only problem is that I want to be able to support many platforms including Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. As I get better, I also hope I can submit games to XBLIG (or XBLA) and Steam, and even the Google Play Store (But that would take some porting and major redesign of controls). I have looked into c++ and SDL but I have no idea how to get started. I have Visual C++ 2010 installed and I hope I can still use that as other C++ IDEs are quit outdated. Because I want to stick with Visual C++ and SDL (unless there is a better library than SDL), there is not much room for debate but rather how to create projects to support cross-platform development.

  I have a course in which the proffesor has asked us to create a DSL for a our final project. He presented us in the first courses xText with Eclipse. This being a new course, I am still a bit fuzzy on what Domain Specific Languages means. This is my current understanding: a domain specific language is a language that is created for specific problems in software development. Examples of DSL's are PHP, SQL, JavaScript and on the opposite are languages like Java , C# , C++ , Ruby etc. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. What I would like to know: is there is any tool for .NET/Visual Studio that is similar to Xtext, that allows me to define a grammar and be allowed to generate a programming language based on that with an activity diagram?

• Build automation: Is it usual to use QMake for non-Qt projects?

  So, I'm planning to write a C++ library and I want it to be cross-platform, and as this library won't deal with UI and I want it to have as little dependencies as possible, I won't be using Qt (actually Qt won't really help me to achieve what I want, all I plan on using is STL and Boost). Now when it comes to build a cross-platform project, I really like QMake as it's extremely easy to use and I have experience with it. I also heard good things about CMake, though I really doubt it's as easy to use as QMake. Anyway, here is my question: Should I stick with build automation tool that I know or is QMake just out of context for a non-Qt project? Should I take this as an opportunity to learn CMake? Or is there a better alternative to these two?

  I was looking at the WPF MVVM framework Caliburn.Micro and read that a lot of standard things are based on naming conventions. For example, automatic binding of properties in the View to properties in the ViewModel. Although this seems to be convenient (removes some boilerplate code), my first instinct reaction is that it isn't completely obvious to a new programmer that will read this code. In other words, the functionality of the application is not completely explained by its own code, but also by the documentation of the framework. EDIT: So this approach is called convention over configuration. Since I could not find any questions concerning this, I altered my question: My question is: Is convention over configuration a correct way of simplifying things, or is it violating some programming principles (and if so, which ones)?

  I have a 11-year old son who wants to do game programming. I've started him on C++ (C++11) and he's learned iostreams, looping, functions, logic and flow control. I'm using the standard library and no memory management at all. But I would like to ask: What language would you suggest for a pre-teen (Python, ...)? What books would you suggest? We looked at one book that was just for console ASCII games. I liked the C++ that it taught but I think he'll get bored without some graphics at some point.

  With all the programming languages that are out there, what exactly does it mean to program in the small and is it still possible, without the possibility of re-purposing to the large. The original article which mentions in the small was dated to 1975 and referred to scripting languages (as glue languages). Maybe I am missing the point, but any language that you can built components of code out of, I would regard to being able to handle "in the large". Is there a confusion on what Objects are and do they really figure as being mandatory to being able to handle "the large". • How do i allow non-root access to /ttyUSB0 on 12.04?

  Since i updated from 10.04 to 12.04, i am unable to acces the device connected in /ttyUSB0 if i dont have root access. To be more specific, i use a usb-to-serial com port converter to acces and configure Cisco equipment with a software called Putty. It happens that, since i upgraded to 12.04, Putty only sees the connected device when i run it as "gksudo putty". If not, it says "unable to connect to port /ttyUSB0". I have managed to change the permissions via chmod 666, and it works, but if i disconnect the usb and reconnect, it goes back to root only. How do i permanently allow non-root access? I have a clue it might be via udev rules, but i have NO IDEIA how to do it. obs. Manufacturer and drivers "PROLIFIC"

  Currently, in my workspace, I have a netbook sitting off to the side gathering dust while I write code on my desktop. As a result, the only use my netbook gets coding-wise is when I'm writing up a quick Python script to model a given problem or concept in class; I never use it at home for coding, or for anything at all, as it is all possible and faster on my (much more powerful) desktop. I feel like this is wrong and that I should be making better use of my netbook. What effective uses have you found for a netbook and a desktop together when programming (or for software development in general)? What are the merits of this practice?

• How can I copy a SQL record which has related records in other tables to the same database?

  Hi. I created a function in C# which allows me to copy a record and its related children to a new record and new related children in the same database. (This is for an application that allows the use of previous work as a template for new work.) Anyway, it works great... Here's a description of how it accomplishes the copy: It populates a two-column memory-based look-up table with the current primary key of each record. Next, as it individually creates each new copy record, it updates the look-up table with the Identity PK of the new record [retrieved from SCOPE_IDENTITY()]. Now, when it copies over any related children, it can look up the new parent PK to set the FK on the new record. In testing, it only took a minute to copy a relational structure on a local instance of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Unfortunately it is proving to be horribly slow in production! My users are dealing with 60,000+ records per parent record over the LAN to our SQL Server! While my copy function still works, each of those records represents an individual SQL UPDATE command and it loads the SQL Server at about 17% CPU from its normal 2% idle. I just finished testing a 50,000 record copy and it took almost 20 minutes! Is there a way to duplicate this functionality in SQL queries or stored procecures to make the SQL server do all of the copy work instead of blasting it over the LAN from each client? (We're running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.) Thanks! -Derek
