• Invalid SQL Query

  I have the next query that in my opinion is a valid one, but I keep getting error telling me that there is a proble on "WHERE em.p4 = ue.p3" - Unknown column 'ue.p3' in 'where clause'. This is the query: SELECT DISTINCT ue.p3 FROM table1 AS ue INNER JOIN table2 AS e ON ue.p3 = e.p3 WHERE EXISTS( SELECT 1 FROM ( SELECT (COUNT(*) >= 1) AS MinMutual FROM table4 AS smm WHERE smm.p1 IN ( SELECT sem.p3 FROM table3 AS sem INNER JOIN table2 AS em ON sem.p3 = em.p3 WHERE em.p4 = ue.p3 AND sem.type = 'friends' AND em.p2 = 'normal' ) AND smm.p5 IN ( 15000,15151 ) ) AS Mutual WHERE Mutual.MinMutual = TRUE) LIMIT 11 If I execute the sub-query which is inside the EXISTS function, everything is O.K.   There is probably an obvious answer to this question, but I am having one heck of a time getting anywhere with it. Consider the query: SELECT * FROM reports AS r JOIN reportvalues AS rv ON rv.report_id = r.report_id JOIN metrics AS m ON m.metric_id = rv.metric_id WHERE r.report_id NOT IN( SELECT DISTINCT report_id FROM exclude_report ) In this query, exclude_report is a view constructed in a similar manner. Now what happens is the query takes an EXTREMELY long time to execute, presumably because the subquery is being executed over each and every row in the parent query. However, I am finding no feasible means of doing this any other way. Oh great SQL wizards, please advise. I really need a way of doing this all in SQL, which I will be using in SSRS.

• Recursive CTE with alternating tables

  I've created a SQL fiddle here. Basically, I have 3 tables BaseTable, Files, and a LinkingTable. The Files table has 3 columns: PK, BaseTableId, RecursiveId (ChildId). What I want to do is find all the children given a BaseTableId (i.e., ParentId). The tricky part is that the way the children are found works like this: Take ParentId 1 and use that to look up a FileId in the Files table, then use that FileId to look for a ChildId in the LinkingTable, if that record exists then use the RecursiveId in the LinkingTable to look for the next FileId in the Files table and so on. • how can i substitute a NULL value for a 0 in an SQL Query result

What i would like to do is place a value of 0 (Zero) instead of NULL. I want to do this because i have a calculated column in the same query whose formular depends on the LeaveDays returned and when LeaveDays is NULL, the formular some how fails. Is there away i can put 0 for NULL such that that i can get my desired result.

  Hello, I have the following query: SELECT Base.ReportDate, Base.PropertyCode, Base.FirstName, Base.MiddleName, Base.LastName, Person.FirstName, Person.MiddleName, Person.LastName FROM LeaseT INNER JOIN Base ON LeaseT.LeaseID = Base.LeaseID INNER JOIN Person ON LeaseT.TenantID = Person.ID works fine, except there could be 0 to 'N' people in the 'Person' table for each record in the Base table, but I only want to return exactly 1 for each 'Base' record (doesn't matter which, but the one with the lowest Person.ID) would be a reasonable choice. If there is 0 rows in the person table, I still need to return the row, but with null values for the 'person' fields. How would I structure the SQL to do that? Thanks. Edit: Yes, the tables are probably not structured properly, but restructuring at this time is not possible - got to work with what is there.

ALTER TABLE table_name ADD VersionNumber UNIQUEIDENTIFIER UNIQUE NOT NULL DEFAULT NEWSEQUENTIALID() GO And when ever a record is updated in the table, I would want to update this column "VersionNumber". So I create a new trigger CREATE TRIGGER [DBO].[TR_TABLE_NAMWE] ON [DBO].[TABLE_NAME] AFTER UPDATE AS BEGIN UPDATE TABLE_NAME SET VERSIONNUMBER=NEWSEQUENTIALID() FROM TABLE_NAME D JOIN INSERTED I ON D.ID=I.ID/* some ID which is used to join*/ END GO But just realized that NEWSEQUENTIALID() can only be used with CREATE TABLE or ALTER TABLE. I got this error The newsequentialid() built-in function can only be used in a DEFAULT expression for a column of type 'uniqueidentifier' in a CREATE TABLE or ALTER TABLE statement. It cannot be combined with other operators to form a complex scalar expression. Is there a workaround for this ? Edit1: Changing NEWSEQUENTIALID() to NEWID() in the trigger solves this, but I am indexing this column and using NEWID() would be sub-optimal

  So this is interesting, and apparently beyond my SQL skillset. I need to select a particular record where an ID="0003" (or whatever) from either table1 or table2 if table1 doesn't have that record. Then I need to join table1 and table2 on a mutual field they both have (field name is Product_ID) I was playing with all sorts of variations of the following, (no, it doesn't work) but after 2 days of groping through the internet and a big SQL book I still can't figure anything out. • Should i really use integer primary IDs [sql]

  For example, i always generate an auto-increment field for the users table, but i also specifies an UNIQUE index on their usernames. There is situations that i first need to get the userId for a given username and then execute the desired query. Or use a JOIN in the desired query. It's 2 trips to the database or a JOIN vs. a varchar index The above is just an example There is a real performance benefit on INT over small VARCHAR indexes? Thanks in advance!

  It's an idea I've heard repeated in a handful of places. Some more or less acknowledging that once trying to solve a problem purely in SQL exceeds a certain level of complexity you should indeed be handling it in code. The logic behind the idea is that for the large majority of cases, the database engine will do a better job at finding the most efficient way of completing your task than you could in code. Especially when it comes to things like making the results conditional on operations performed on the data. Arguably with modern engines effectively JIT'ing + caching the compiled version of your query it'd make sense on the surface. The question is whether or not leveraging your database engine in this way is inherently bad design practice (and why). The lines become blurred further when all the logic exists inside the database and you're just hitting it via an ORM.

Here are the tables: PACKETS *PacketID Name PACKETTAGS *PacketTagID PacketID TagID Tags *TagID Name Here is the basic query without the WHERE parameters: SELECT Packets.Name, Tags.Name AS Tag, PacketTags.PacketTagID FROM Packets INNER JOIN PacketTags ON Packets.PacketID = PacketTags.PacketID INNER JOIN Tags ON PacketTags.TagID = Tags.TagID I need to filter out all the Packets that don't have tags that match any of the words BUT ALSO ONLY include the Packets that have the tags entered in the string of text (spaces separate the tags when entered into the textbox) I'm starting with the basics by figuring this out in t-SQL first but ultimately I need to be able to do this in Linq-to-SQL

  I am having trouble with an SQL query returning more than one row with the same name, using this query: SELECT * FROM People P JOIN SpecialityCombo C ON P.PERSONID = C.PERSONID JOIN Speciality S ON C.GROUPID = S.ID; People contains information on each person, Specialty contains the names and ID of each specialty and SpecialityCombo contains information about the associations between People and their Speciality, namely each row has a PERSONID and a Speciality ID (trying to keep it normalised to some extent). My query works in that it returns each Person and the name of their specialty, but it returns n rows for the number of specialitys they want, because each specialty returns the same row 'name'. What I want is it to return just one row containing each speciality. How can I do this?

  I have a development server with 3 instances: Default, A and B. It is a physical server, non clustered. Whenever the syspolicy_purge_history job runs at 2 am, I get failed login alerts. Looking at the job steps, all are successfully completed. It appears that some point during the step "Erase Phantom System Health Records" is when the failed logins occur. syspolicy_purge_history on instance B works OK. syspolicy_purge_history on the Default instance seems to want to connect to instance B, resulting in: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-B'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . No errors are reported by Powershell. syspolicy_purge_history on the A instance seems to want to connect to the Default instance resulting in Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-Default'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . Then it tries to connect to the B instance, resulting in Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-B'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . No errors are reported by Powershell. Secondary DB: 'UK_Backup', File: 'F:\UK_20100324090000.trn' 2010-04-01 10:00:01.93 Error: Could not find a log backup file that could be applied to secondary database 'UK_Backup'.(Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.LogShipping) 2010-04-01 10:00:01.93 Deleting old log backup files. Primary Database: 'UK' 2010-04-01 10:00:01.96 The restore operation completed with errors. Secondary ID: 'c066bb63-930c-4b73-861c-f59f0a38c12c' It was happily humming along until I checked it this morning. Some additional details. In the Logshipping folder, there is one file UK_20100324090001.trn dated on the 2009-3-24. The next most recent .trn file is the UK_20100374090001.trn which is the file that was applied during the restore. Why is there an older trn file seemingly on it's own? How can I fix this problem? It'll be a real pain to restart the entire logshipping process. x_x

  I was wondering if there was a unix daemon available that would be capable of something like this: admin adds an IP entry to a DB; daemon finds change after wait interval and manipulates ifconfig/config files I was thinking maybe there is a plugin for cfengine that might be able to do this, but I couldn't find any. I mean this would be a fairly easy thing to script up in perl, but why re-invent the wheel if theres already something out there that is better than what my limited programming abilities can make. Lastly, if it worked on FreeBSD that'd be great.

• SQL Server restore a backup results in an error.

  I have a database in dev (SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2008) that I need to move to prod (SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003). My process is as follows: Login to dev, open SQL Server Management Studio Right click on the database | Tasks | Backup. Keep all default options (full backup etc.) Move .bak file locally to prod (no network drive), login to prod, open SQL Server Enterprise Manager. Right click Databases node | All Tasks | Restore database. Change Restore as database to reflect the same database name. Click radio button 'From device'. Click 'Select Devices' Click Restore from: Add..., browse to .bak file (small - only 6mb) Now I am ready to restore the database, so I click OK and get the following error: "The media family on device 'E:...bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally." This error is immediate. I have tried a few different variations of this - restoring the db to dev machine with a different db name and log file names (where it originated), creating an empty database with the same physical path to files before and trying to restore to that, making a few different .bak files and making sure they are verified before uploading them to prod. I know for a fact the directory for the .mdf and .ldf files exist on prod, though the files themselves don't exist. If, before I click OK to restore, go to the options tab instead I get the following error: Error 3241: The media family on device 'E:...bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. Anyone have any bright ideas?
