  • Making my own custom Ubuntu

    I was wondering, is it possible to make my own customized version of Linux based on Ubuntu 10.10 ? I am thinking of calling it something different but I was wondering besides making a custom Live CD I am talking about an Linux that people can install on there computers using Ubuntu installation method.   • Latest Ubuntu stuck on "completing the ubuntu installation"

    So my issue is after installing 12.10 Ubuntu using wubi.exe on a dedicated parition and rebooting the computer I am given the option to boot ubuntu, as I choose ubuntu I am brought to the "completing the ubuntu installation page" after it hits 0 on the countdown it just sits doing nothing. I left my computer on all day and still the same issue so I know its not just a slow install. Some say its because ubuntu cannot find a video driver for my card (xfx radeon 5770) which if that is the case is there a way i can run the install without it needing to look for drivers?

  • Recover Ubuntu grub without LiveCD - Can't boot with Ubuntu LiveCD after install Windows

    I installed Windows after installing Ubuntu. But Ubuntu is still intact in its partition. I'm trying to run the Ubuntu LiveCD to recover grub, but the LiveCD no longer works. It stops the boot process and does not load completely. I can not run Ubuntu in live mode to recover grub. Is there any way to recover the grub/grub2 without the LiveCD? Edit: [Important] I've downloaded a new Ubuntu 10.10 ISO. I also did the MD5 check. It's all right. Then, I recorded this .iso and still can not load the LiveCD to the end.

  • Fan control on Acer Aspire One D255 netbook

    I have Ubuntu netbook edition on my Acer Aspire One D255 netbook and I notice that I always hear the fan working at 100% despite the actual temperature. I run the sensors command its only at 13c, theres no reason why the fan needs to be running this hard at that temp. root@adam-netbook:~# sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +13.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) I'm guessing I may need some drivers in order to interact with the fan? Does anyone have any experience with this? It also seems that "sensors" may not be all that accurate, the temperature never seems to fluctuate.

    Hello everyone. I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu is my first distribution. I have chosen Ubuntu because I want to learn more about Linux. I'm under time constraints and need to setup a server as soon as possible. I have Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server setup via VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro. I installed everything I need on the server edition, but it feels way over my head. I have no experience with CLI. Can I just use Ubuntu Desktop to run my Web server for the time being while I learn CLI? I basically need to run Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, Python and Django. Should I be using MAMP? Thanks.

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I am experiencing some problems. I didn't have Ubuntu 12.04 on a drive to install it but I did have Ubuntu 14.04. So I installed it and downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 using Ubuntu 14. Now, I have 2 home partitions and 2 boot partitions. One home and boot is mounted at /media and the other one is /home and /boot. I cannot get rid of /media/HOME and /media/BOOT even using Gparted. How do I get remove them?

  • Can I install Ubuntu One server on my private cloud?

    So Ubuntu One seems feature rich, and looks like a serious alternative to some of the other "host your own" file syncing software out there (I've tried iFolder and Sparkleshare, but for different reasons, they're not suitable). Is there any concept of taking Ubuntu One, and hosting it privately on my own server, and then using the clients to connect to my server? Or am I missing the point? Any answers, even a "you don't want Ubuntu One, you want (insert name of Ubuntu alternative)" is fine.

    I have followed the instructions on numerous pages, such as this, which say to run the following commands: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner" sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk However, when I do this I still get the following error: me@mycomputer:~$ sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk Reading package lists... This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package sun-java6-jdk has no installation candidate I realize Java is available from many other sources, but for reasons that I can't get into here I must use this specific version. What can I do to get this installed?

    I changed my instance's hostname using the hostname utility and then set it in /etc/hostname so that the new name survives reboot. My main motivation was for differentiating between instances at the prompt using the \h format in PS1. EDIT I also changed permissions on my home directory. I made my home directory group writeable. END EDIT Now I can no longer SSH into the machine. The short of it is the error Permission denied (publickey). Running ssh -v, the more verbose output is: debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/ec2key.pem debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). Should I have done something after changing the hostname? Now I can't get into the instance! :(

In VirtualBox there is an option to choose between pulseaudio and alsa for sound, but it seems to have no effect. I am using virtualbox-3.0 packages, not the ose version. My system is up to date.

  • nameservers one domain one VPS and one VMCloud

    I 'had' just a single VPS with nameservers ns1 & ns2.mydomain.com. I've now taken a VMCloud package as I need space etc. Ultimately I will carefully transfer all accounts from my VPS to Cloud but in the short term I'm running both. In the new WHM on Cloud I have set hostname bla.domian nameservers as ns3 & ns4.mydomain.com with the two new ip addresses. Question is do I need to do anything else - eg where mydomain.com is registered? I want ns1 & 2 point to VPS and ns3 & 4 to point to Cloud.

  • ubuntu eth0 not reconnecting after cable unplugged

    I'm running kubuntu 9.10 w/ gnome, I have a static IP defined in /etc/network/interfaces When I unplugged my network cable and rebooted, then reconnected the network cable I was not able to connect. I tried using sudo ifup eth0, and then ifconfig and it seemed as though the IP address had been assigned and I was connected, but I wasn't. I then did ifdown eth0, and again ifup eth0. For some reason I'm not able to access the network. Furthermore, I also attempted to connect via wlan, and was able to connect to the wireless network, but cannot "see" the network. I can't transfer data or access the internet or anything on the network including the router. (due to missing arch) then a blue dialog box appears with OK (Which is not clickable and pressing enter is not workin.)   • Ubuntu Cannot change permissions on files I own and have RW to.

    Hello there, I have a harddrive full of backups which for me is mounted at /media/chronus_ I have been trying to give another user rw permission to this drive.   • How can I restore programs that were sent to the background (Ubuntu)

    I was fooling around with my dual display setup (turned on my second monitor is almost all) and a handful of programs that were running seem not to be available anymore. Thunderbird, Gvim, Tomboy ps shows them, but I can't see them. Can't cycle to them with alt-tab. They aren't just in some other window. I'm not even sure how to start figuring out where everything went. Ideas?

    I need to run Firefox in my server in order to execute some Selenium tests from Hudson. I would love no to have to install a complete gui. So I installed Xvfb in order to fake the Gui (I understand it this way correct me if my assumptions are wrong).
