  • Error trying to run rails server

    I am trying to get a basic Rails application to run on my Mac OS X 10.6.5. I created a new app called demo (rails new demo), then went into the demo directory and tried to start the app with rails server. (sudo gem install sqlite3-ruby). Here is where I first noticed something could be off: "Successfully installed sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2 1 gem installed Installing ri documentation for sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2... No definition for libversion Enclosing class/module 'mSqlite3' for class Statement not known Installing RDoc documentation for sqlite3-ruby-1.3.2... No definition for libversion Enclosing class/module 'mSqlite3' for class Statement not known " I had rails running well on my system a few months ago, so I figured maybe I had some duplicates and it was trying to use the wrong one. I ran: "for cmd in ruby irb gem rake; do which $cmd; done" and got: "/opt/local/bin/ruby /opt/local/bin/irb /opt/local/bin/gem /opt/local/bin/rake" Checking where sqlite3 also gets me: "/opt/local/bin/sqlite3" so they all seem to be in the right place. Obviously /opt/local/bin is in my system path. If I check gems server, it shows that I have installed sqlite3-ruby 1.3.2 gem. Not sure what the problem could be? I am using ruby 1.8.7 (2010-12-23 patchlevel 330) [i686-darwin10].   • How do you assign a variable with the result of a if..else block?

    I had an argument with a colleague about the best way to assign a variable in an if..else block. His orignal code was : @products = if params[:category] Category.find(params[:category]).products else Product.all end I rewrote it this way : if params[:category] @products = Category.find(params[:category]).products else @products = Product.all end This could also be rewritten with a one-liner using a ternery operator (? :) but let's pretend that product assignment was longer than a 100 character and couldn't fit in one line. Which of the two is clearer to you? The first solution takes a little less space but I thought that declaring a variable and assigning it three lines after can be more error prone. I also like to see my if and else aligned, makes it easier for my brain to parse it!

  • Make process crash on large memory allocation

    I'm trying to find a significant memory leak (15MB at a time, but doing allocations like this on multiple places). I checked the most obvious places, and then used AQTime, but I still can't pinpoint it. Now I see 2 options left: 1) Use SetProcessWorkingSetSize: I've tried this but my process happily keeps on running when using up more then 150MB: DWORD MemorySize = 150*1024*1024; SetProcessWorkingSetSize( GetCurrentProcess(), MemorySize/2, MemorySize*2 ); 2) Put a breakpoint when allocating more then 1MB at a time. How should I do this, overload operator new with an 'if1MB' inside ?

Where as when I use string func _tcscpy to assign "Hai" to name, its working perfectly. Can some one explain why so?

    It seems like optimization is a lost art these days. Wasn't there a time when all programmers squeezed every ounce of efficiency from their code? Often doing so while walking 5 miles in the snow? In the spirit of bringing back a lost art, what are some tips that you know of for simple (or perhaps complex) changes to optimize C#/.NET code? Since it's such a broad thing that depends on what one is trying to accomplish it'd help to provide context with your tip. For instance: When concatenating many strings together use StringBuilder instead. If you're only concatenating a handful of strings it's ok to use the + operator. Use string.Compare to compare 2 strings instead of doing something like string1.ToLower() == string2.ToLower()

  • Calling 32 bit unmanaged dlls from C# randomly failing

    Hi, I'm having an issue when calling 32 bit delphi dll's from c# web site. The code generally runs fine, but occasionally I get an error Unable to load DLL '': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). This issue persists until I recycle the app pool for the site, and then it works fine again. On the same server, there is also a web service that is calling the same set of dlls. This web service doesn't seem to have the same issue that the web site has. Both applications are using .net framework 3.5, separate app pools on IIS. Here is the code I'm using to wrap the dlls: public sealed class Mapper { static Mapper instance = null; [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] private static extern bool SetDllDirectory(string lpPathName); private Mapper() { SetDllDirectory(ConfigManager.Path); } public static Mapper Instance { get { if (instance == null) { instance = new Mapper(); } return instance; } } public int Foo(string bar, ref double val) { return Loader.Foo(bar, ref val); } } public static class Loader { [DllImport("some.dll", CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall, CharSet = CharSet.Unicode, EntryPoint = "foo")] public static extern int Foo(string bar, ref double val); } Then I call it like this: double val = 0.0; Mapper.Instance.Foo("bar", ref val); Any ideas as to why it would "randomly" Unable to load DLL '': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). The other problem is that I haven't been able to replicate the issue in the development environment. I thought that due to 2 applications calling the same dlls, that there could be some locks occurring. To replicate this, I created an app that spawned multiple threads and repeatedly called the 32bit dlls, and then used the web site to call these same dlls. I still couldn't replicate the issue. Some possible fixes that I can think of: Wrap the 32 bit dlls in web service (because the webservice doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem). But this may be worthless if it turns out that the web service also fails. Set up state server for the session state and periodically recycle the app pool for the site.This isn't fixing the problem, only avoiding it. Wrap the dll's in exe, and call that exe. Then I shouldn't get the same issue. But this also seems like a hacky solution. Implement the mapper class differently ? But how else should I be doing the call? The other draw back is that other applications are using this mapper, so I'd need to change there code too. Thanks
