  • How do I use a contact's photo in a table view cell?

    - by Andy
I've got an app that has a table view that displays contact information in each row. I'd like to use the contact's stored image (if there is one available) as the image on the left-hand side of the cell. I've found some sketchy sample code in Apple's documentation, but the address book references some kind of weird data type (CFDataRef) that doesn't appear to correspond to the data types referenced in the table view programming guide (mainly UIImage). This seems like a pretty basic task, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Resources for Win32 C/C++ programming

    - by EricM
I have experience in a variety of languages (Java, Perl, C#, PHP, javascript, ansi-C for microprocessors, Objective-C and others), with Win32 programming not being an area I've done a lot of work in. Now part of my job entails maintaining a large Win32 codebase that stretches back 15 years and includes everything from C written originally for Win95 to MFC to COM to 64-bit code for Win7 to C++ using Boost and so on. If there's a variation on how to do something it's in there. Are there any good Win32 C/C++ references that discuss both the proper way to do things today and give you a little sense of how things evolved? Something like this discussion of all the various boolean types, or how to approach the API monstrosity of simply copying a string. I don't see my career heading too far down this path, but I do like to understand what I'm working with and I think this is an important part of programming history. thanks, Eric

  • How SqlDataAdapter works internally?

    - by tigrou
I wonder how SqlDataAdapter works internally, especially when using UpdateCommand for updating a huge DataTable (since it's usually a lot faster that just sending sql statements from a loop). Here is some idea I have in mind : It creates a prepared sql statement (using SqlCommand.Prepare()) with CommandText filled and sql parameters initialized with correct sql types. Then, it loops on datarows that need to be updated, and for each record, it updates parameters values, and call SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(). It creates a bunch of SqlCommand objects with everything filled inside (CommandText and sql parameters). Several SqlCommands at once are then batched to the server (depending of UpdateBatchSize). It uses some special, low level or undocumented sql driver instructions that allow to perform an update on several rows in a effecient way (rows to update would need to be provided using a special data format and a the same sql query (UpdateCommand here) would be executed against each of these rows).

  • SQL Server float datatype

    - by Martin Smith
    The documentation for SQL Server Float says Approximate-number data types for use with floating point numeric data. Floating point data is approximate; therefore, not all values in the data type range can be represented exactly. Which is what I expected it to say. If that is the case though why does the following return 'Yes' in SQL Server DECLARE @D float DECLARE @E float set @D = 0.1 set @E = 0.5 IF ((@D + @D + @D + @D +@D) = @E) BEGIN PRINT 'YES' END ELSE BEGIN PRINT 'NO' END but the equivalent C++ program returns "No"? #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { float d = 0.1F; float e = 0.5F; if((d+d+d+d+d) == e) { cout << "Yes"; } else { cout << "No"; } }

  • conceptually different entities with a few similar properties should be stored in one table or more?

    - by Haghpanah
Assume A and B are conceptually different entities that have a few similar properties and of course their own specific properties. In database design, should I put those two entities in one big aggregated table or two respectively designed tables. For instance, I have two types of payment; Online-payment and Manual-payment with following definition, TABLE [OnlinePayments] ( [ID] [uniqueidentifier], [UserID] [uniqueidentifier], [TrackingCode] [nvarchar](32), [ReferingCode] [nvarchar](32), [BankingAccID] [uniqueidentifier], [Status] [int], [Amount] [money], [Comments] [nvarchar](768), [CreatedAt] [datetime], [ShopingCartID] [uniqueidentifier], ) And TABLE [ManualPayments] ( [ID] [uniqueidentifier], [UserID] [uniqueidentifier], [BankingAccID] [uniqueidentifier], [BankingOrgID] [uniqueidentifier], [BranchName] [nvarchar](64), [BranchCode] [nvarchar](16), [Amount] [money], [SlipNumber] [nvarchar](64), [SlipImage] [image], [PaidAt] [datetime], [Comments] [nvarchar](768), [CreatedAt] [datetime], [IsApproved] [bit], [ApprovedByID] [uniqueidentifier], ) One of my friends told me that creating two distinct tables for such similar entities is not a well design method and they should be put in one single table for the sake of performance and ease of data manipulations. I’m now wondering what to do? What is the best practice in such a case?

  • Handling null values with PowerShell dates

    - by Tim Ferrill
I'm working on a module to pull data from Oracle into a PowerShell data table, so I can automate some analysis and perform various actions based on the results. Everything seems to be working, and I'm casting columns into specific types based on the column type in Oracle. The problem I'm having has to do with null dates. I can't seem to find a good way to capture that a date column in Oracle has a null value. Is there any way to cast a [datetime] as null or empty?

  • Visual Studio project build as an executable AND a DLL

    - by East of Nowhere
In Visual Studio 2008 project properties, Application tab, I can set the Output type to Windows Application, Console Application, or Class Library. I have a project that I want to build as a stand-alone tool (console app) and be available to a couple other tools I'm working on as a class library. The VS GUI only lets me choose one or the other, and building the proj twice all the time is inconvenient. How can I set it up to build both output types in a single build job? Do I write some custom MSBuild .targets file or what?

  • Writing complex records to file

    - by DrSobhani
Hi I have defined some records in my project which may be consisted of other records and also dynamic arrays of normal data types and other records , it is n example of a record type Type1=record x:integer; end; Type2=record Y:array of X; str:string; end; When I tried to save one of variables of these records type to file with blockwrite function like this : var Temp1:Type2; begin setlength(temp1.y,100); blockwrite(MyFile,Temp1,sizeOf(Temp1); it just wrote as much as the size of pure record is ,but temp1 has a dynmic arrays which is resized , Could someone please tell me how I can write a complex record to a file , I mean something like what is used in VB6 . Thanks

  • Forming a SOAP request message through WSDL

    - by Shahzad
I'm very new to webservices. I'm trying to figure out how I can formulate a request message (and determine what the response message) would be based on the wsdl description that I have. This is from a third party web service. The WSDL description that I have access to gives me a bunch of information like <types> <message> <operation> etc. But in the examples that I've seen online, it's showing the request mesage within the "soap:envelope" tag. What am I missing? Eventually I'd like to be able to call this webservice using JQuery. But I can't even figure out how to formulate the request message let alone make an ajax call to it. any help would be appreciated.

  • Javascript clone form?

    - by user202987
I need to copy a form information with all types of elements and send it with AJAX. Tried these: 1. cloneNode on the form. - Doesn't work with IE, only copies text stuff properly. cloneNode on each element. Doesn't work with IE, only copies text stuff properly. Making new textareas for each element, and copying the value in. Doesn't work for textareas in IE, formatting is lost. I imagine a combination of those 3 would work for IE and FF but is there any decent solution to this? Shortness of code is a priority.

  • Java vs C# - AddActionListener vs event subscription

    - by S.O.
Very simple question from one somewhat new to Java: when adding an event handler (or whatever it is called in Java) to a Control, MUST it be an object? I mean, in C# I can do control.event += System.eventHandler(methodThatHandlesEvent) Sure, that's because we have delegate types in C#, but I was wondering if I can choose which method would be called when an event is raised in Java? I mean, in Java I can have something like control.AddActionListener(objectWhichClassImplementsActionListener) And then I have the stupid actionPerformed method in this class, which is the only method that is called. I know, there are more kinds of listeners, but I can't have a "ActionListenerHandler" class in which I implement several actionPerformed methods that can be assigned to different controls?

  • Haskell: Constrain function on type Double to only work with Integers

    - by thurn
Suppose I'm writing a function that takes a list of integers and returns only those integers in the list that are less than 5.2. I might do something like this: belowThreshold = filter (< 5.2) Easy enough, right? But now I want to constrain this function to only work with input lists of type [Int] for design reasons of my own. This seems like a reasonable request. Alas, no. A declaration that constraints the types as so: belowThreshold :: [Integer] -> [Integer] belowThreshold = filter (< 5.2) Causes a type error. So what's the story here? Why does doing filter (< 5.2) seem to convert my input list into Doubles? How can I make a version of this function that only accepts integer lists and only returns integer lists? Why does the type system hate me?

  • How much faster are register based architectures than stack architectures?

    - by drozzy
Studying compilers course, I am left wondering why use registers at all. It is often the case that the caller or callee must save the register value and then restore it. In a way they always end up using the stack anyway. Is creating additional complexity by using registers really worth it? Excuse my ignorance. Update: Please, I know that registers are faster than RAM and other types of cache. My main concern is that one has to "save" the value that is in the register and the "restore" it to. In both cases we are accessing some kind of cache. Would it not be better to use cache in the first place?

  • Mixing HTML and STRUTS2 tags

    - by ryan
I have a form which has both HMTL tags and struts tags. I use the HTML tags because of alignment issues with struts tags. <s:form action = "setNode" name = "processing" method ="POST"> <script> <!-- createTree(catArray); </script> <br/> <s:radio name="processOption" label="" list="{'Add','Move','Delete'}" ></s:radio> <s:textfield name="node" ></s:textfield> <s:submit name="Go" value=" Go " align="center" /> </s:form> the createTree function creates a tree form with HTML checkbox input types. The action triggers a java function. How do i see which checkboxes are checked?

  • Is it a good idea to apply some basic macros to simplify code in a large project?

    - by DoctorT
I've been working on a foundational c++ library for some time now, and there are a variety of ideas I've had that could really simplify the code writing and managing process. One of these is the concept of introducing some macros to help simplify statements that appear very often, but are a bit more complicated than should be necessary. For example, I've come up with this basic macro to simplify the most common type of for loop: #define loop(v,n) for(unsigned long v=0; v<n; ++v) This would enable you to replace those clunky for loops you see so much of: for (int i = 0, i < max_things; i++) With something much easier to write, and even slightly more efficient: loop (i, max_things) Is it a good idea to use conventions like this? Are there any problems you might run into with different types of compilers? Would it just be too confusing for someone unfamiliar with the macro(s)?

  • MS VC++ 6 class wizard

    - by Shane MacLaughlin
Ok, I'm developing an application that has been in pretty much continous development over the last 16 years, from C in DOS, through various flavours of C++ and now is largely based around C++ with MFC and StingRay GUIs and various other SDKs. While I use VS 2005 for the release builds, I still use MSVC 6 for much of the GUI building, simply because ClassWizard is so much quicker in this environment than the weak equivalent tools that followed. Note that I am using ClassWizard to automatically generate code for my own user defined types (see Custom DDXs) and I like to add a lot of member variables and methods in one go. Creating them one at a time as per later versions of Visual Studio for me is a big backward step. At the same time, working with multiple IDEs is also a pain. My question is in two parts; Is there any way of getting ClassWizard to work is VS 2005 or VS 2008? Is there any drop in replacement, or alternative IDE, that provides similar levels of productivty for old C++ hacks such as myself?

  • Javascript Autocomplete Text

    - by WPS
Hi All, I need to implement an autocomplete text field using JavaScript and JSF. When the user types some character in a text field, I need to make an AJAX request and get the values based on the values entered. I've an input text field, on "keyup" I'm triggering a function which submits the value to the server side. var timeoutid = 0; function intitiateTypeAhead(){ clearTimeout(timeoutid); if (document.getElementById("inputText").value.length >= 2) { timeoutid = setTimeout('clickButton', 500); } return false; } function clickButton(){ //submits the value to the server } <h:inputText id="inputText" onkeyup="intitiateTypeAhead()"></h:inputText> This works properly, but certain times the request is made for each character entered by the user. I'm not sure if there is anything wrong with the implementation. Can someone please help me to fix this?

  • Passing arguments to UILabel [ 2 ] *

    - by DesperateLearner
I'm trying to call a method of the below (Scroll animation class) type from a viewcontroller class. -(void)CreateLabel:(CGRect )frame andLabel:(UILabel *[NUM_LABELS])label andview:(UIView *)view; I got some errors when I tried passing the argument. Any suggestion on how to call this? This is how I called that method ScrollAnimation *newAnimation = [[ScrollAnimation alloc] init]; [newAnimation CreateLabel:CGRectMake(0, 50, 300,30) andLabel:animateLabel[NUM_LABELS] andview:self.view]; I have the error /Volumes/Red Drive/CarTransition/CarTransition/ViewController.m:120:66: Implicit conversion of an Objective-C pointer to 'UILabel **' is disallowed with ARC /Volumes/Red Drive/CarTransition/CarTransition/ViewController.m:120:66: Incompatible pointer types sending 'UILabel *__strong' to parameter of type 'UILabel **'

  • Can't install APK hosted my own apache server

    - by Ogre_BGR
I've exported an apk from eclipse. I am able to install it without any problem if I copy it to the phone's sd card. When trying to download via phone's (Galaxy S) browser I get: "Download unsuccessful". I have set mime type application/vnd.android.package-archive in the mime.types, restarted apache, still same result. Also tried : <a href="downloads/my_apk.apk" type="application/vnd.android.package-archive">Download App</a> Still no luck. I am able to download and install applications from android market. I suspect that apache is not sending the mime type but this is just a shot in the dark. How can I fix the problem and be able to install APKs from my web server? (or at least to check if apache sends correct header with mime type) Any help will be appreciated.

  • Haskell: Why is it saying my function type is off?

    - by linkmaster03
I wrote a little Haskell program to find the area of a triangle, primarily to practice custom types, but it keeps throwing the following error on compile: areafinder.hs:7:4: Couldn't match expected type 'Triangle' against inferred type 'm b' In a stmt of a 'do' expression: putStr "Base: " In the expression: do { putStr "Base: "; baseStr I'm not sure where 'm b' comes from, so I'm at a loss here. Why is it throwing this error, and what can I do to fix it? Here is my code: module Main where data Triangle = Triangle Double Double -- base, height getTriangle :: Triangle getTriangle = do putStr "Base: " baseStr Double calcTriangle (Triangle base height) = base * height main = putStrLn ("Area = " ++ show (calcTriangle getTriangle)) Thanks. :)

  • Design pattern: Polymorphism for list of objects

    - by ziang
Suppose I have a class A, and A1, A2 inherits from A. There are 2 functions: List<A1> getListA1(){...} List<A2> getListA2(){...} Now I want to do something similar to both A1 and A2 in another function public void process(List<A>){...} If I want to pass the instance of either ListA1 or ListA2, of course the types doesn't match because the compiler doesn't allow the coercion from List< A1 to List< A. I can't do something like this: List<A1> listA1 = getListA1(); List<A> newList = (List<A>)listA1; //this is not allowed. So what is the best approach to the process()? Is there any way to do it in a universal way rather than write the similar code to both List and List?

  • How do I setup a WCF Data Service with an ADO.NET Entity Entity Model in another assembly?

    - by lsb
Hi! I have an ASP.NET 4.0 website that has an Entity Data Model hooked up to WCF Data Service. When the Service and Model are in the same assembly everything works. Unfortunately, when I move the Model to another "shared" assembly (and change the namespace) the service compiles but throws a 500 error when launched in a browser. The reason I want to have the Model in a common assembly (lets call it RiaTest.Shared) is that I want share common validation code between the client and service (by checking "Reuse types in referenced assemblies" in the Advanced tab of the Add Service Reference dialog). Anyway, I've spent a couple of hours on this to no avail so any help in the regard would be appreciated...

  • Using Multiple Databases

    - by sergiuoala
A company is hired by another company for helping in a certain field. So I created the following tables: Companies: id, company name, company address Administrators: (in relation with companies) id, company_id, username, email, password, fullname Then, each company has some workers in it, I store data about workers. Hence, workers has a profession, Agreement Type signed and some other common things. Now, the parent tables and data in it for workers (Agreement Types, Professions, Other Common Things) are going to be the same for each company. Should I create 1 new database for each company? Or store All data into the same database? Thanks.

  • WIX: How to register an Application to a URL Protocol?

    - by NOP slider
In WIX 3.5 you can register file types easily: <ProgId Id="MyApp.File" Description="MyApp File" Icon="MyAppEXE" IconIndex="0"> <Extension Id="ext" ContentType="application/x-myapp-file"> <Verb Id="open" Command="&amp;Open" TargetFile="MyAppEXE" Argument="&quot;%1&quot;"/> </Extension> </ProgId> What if I want to register an URL protocol, as specified here? Obviously, it has no extension so where would I put the Verb tag? Or should I use another approach? Thanks.
