• How to create a PeopleCode Application Package/Application Class using PeopleTools Tables

  This article describes how - in PeopleCode (Release PeopleTools 8.50) - to enable a grid without enabling each static column, using a dynamic Application Class. The goal is to disable the following grid with three columns “Effort Date”, ”Effort Amount” and “Charge Back” , when the Check Box “Finished with task” is selected , without referencing each static column; this PeopleCode could be used dynamically with any grid. If the check box “Finished with task” is cleared, the content of the grid columns is editable (and the buttons “+” and “-“ are available): So, you create an Application Package “CLASS_EXTENSIONS” that contains an Application Class “EWK_ROWSET”. This Application Class is defined with Class extends “ Rowset” and you add two news properties “Enabled” and “Visible”: After creating this Application Class, you use it in two PeopleCode Events : Rowinit and FieldChange : This code is very ‘simple’, you write only one command : ” &ERS2.Enabled = False” → and the entire grid is “Enabled”… and you can use this code with any Grid! • Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

  Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor. • Yippy &ndash; the F# MVVM Pattern

  I did a recent post on implementing WPF with F#. Today I would like to expand on this posting to give a simple implementation of the MVVM pattern in F#. A good read about this topic can also be found on Dean Chalk’s blog although my example of the pattern is possibly simpler. With the MVVM pattern one typically has 3 segments, the view, viewmodel and model. With the beauty of WPF binding one is able to link the state based viewmodel to the view. In my implementation I have kept the same principles. It has a button that’s command is bound to the MyCommand and a textbox that has its text bound to the Title property. One other module that I have created is my ViewModelBase. Also because I have my view in XAML I can use the XAML designer to design forms in F# which I believe is a much cleaner way to go rather than implementing it all in code. • Constrained/penalized distance function

  Assume a character is located on a n by n grid and has to reach a certain entry on that grid. Its current position is (x1,y1). Also on the same grid is an enemy with coordinates (x2,y2). Each step algorithm randomly generates new candidate locations for the hero (if there are k candidates then there is a kx2 matrix of new potential locations. What I need is some distance objective function to compare the candidates. I'm currently using d1 - c * d2, where d1 is distance to the objective (measure in terms of number of pixels for each axis), d2 is distance to the enemy and c is some coefficient (this is very much like a set-up for Lagrangian). It's not working very well though. I'd be quite keen to learn how what constrained distance function are used for similar cases. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

• Passing parameters between Silverlight and ASP.NET – Part 1

  While working with Silverlight applications, we may face some scenarios where we may need to embed Silverlight as a component, like for e.g in Sharepoint Webpars or simple we can have the same with ASP.NET. The biggest challenge comes when we have to pass the parameters from ASP.NET to Silverlight components or back from Silverlight to ASP.NET. We have lots of ways we can do this, like using InitParams, QueryStrings, using HTML objects in Silverlight, etc. All these different techniques have some advantages or disadvantages or limitations. Lets see one by one why we should choose one and what are the ways to achieve the same. 1. InitParams: Lets start with InitParams, Start your Visual Studio 2010 IDE, and Create a Silverlight Application, give any name. Now go to the ASP.NET WebProject which is used to Host the Silverlight XAP component. You will find lots of different tags are used by Silverlight object as <params> tags. • Snap App Windows to Pre-Defined Screen Sections with Acer GridVista

  The window snapping feature in Windows 7 and the ability to organize monitor(s) into specific gridded sections have both become popular lately. If you love the idea of having both combined in a single software then join us as we look at Acer GridVista. Note: Acer GridVista works with Windows XP, Vista, & 7. It will also work with dual monitors. Setup Acer GridVista comes in a zip file format and at first you might assume that it is portable in nature but it is not. Once you unzip the enclosed folder you will need to double click on “Setup.exe” to install the program. Acer GridVista in Action Once you have installed the program and started it up all that you will notice at first is the new “System Tray Icon”. Here you can see the “Context Menu”… The only menu command that you will likely use most of the time is the “Grid Configuration Command”. Notice that for our single monitor setup that it lists “Display 1”. The “Single Setting” is enabled by default and you can easily choose the layout that best suits your needs. The enabled layout style will always be highlighted in yellow for easy reference. For our example we chose the “Triple (primary at right)” layout style. Each section will be specifically numbered as shown here. Do not worry…the grid and numbers only appear for a moment and then become invisible again until you move an app window into that section/area of your screen. On every regular app window that you open you will notice three new buttons in the upper right corner. Here is what each of these new buttons do: Acer GridVista Extensions (Transparent, Send To Window Grid, About Acer GridVista): Viewable in a drop-down menu Lock To Grid (Enable/Disable): Enabled by default –> Note: Set to disable on a particular window to keep it free of the “grid locking function” Always On Top (Enable/Disable): Disabled by default A good look at the “Extensions Drop-Down Menu” where you can set an app window to be transparent or send it to a specific screen section on your monitor(s). If you open an app it will not automatically lock into a specific section. To lock the window into a specific section drag-and-drop the app window into the desired section. Notice the red outline and highlighted number on “Section 2” below. The red outline and highlighted number serves as an indicator that if you release the app window at that moment it will lock into the outlined/highlighted section. Now that Notepad is locked into “Section 2” you can see that it is maximized within that section. Continue to drag-and-drop your app windows into the appropriate sections as desired…apps can still be reduced to the “Taskbar” the same as before. Options These are the options available for Acer GridVista… Conclusion If you have been wanting the ability to “snap” windows and organize them into specific screen areas then Acer GridVista is definitely a program that you should try out. • MVVM/Presentation Model With WinForms

  Hi, I'm currently working on a brownfield application, it's written with winforms, as a preparation to use WPF in a later version, out team plans to at least use the MVVM/Presentation model, and bind it against winforms... I've explored the subject, including the posts in this site (which i love very much), when boiled down, the main advantage of wpf are : binding controls to properties in xaml. binding commands to command objects in the viewmodel. the first feature is easy to implement (in code), or with a generic control binder, which binds all the controls in the form. the second feature is a little harder to implement, but if you inherit from all your controls and add a command property (which is triggered by an internal event such as click), which is binded to a command instance in the ViewModel. The challenges I'm currently aware of are : implementing a commandmanager, (which will trigger the CanInvoke method of the commands as necessery. winforms only supports one level of databinding : datasource, datamember, wpf is much more flexible. am i missing any other major features that winforms lacks in comparison with wpf, when attempting to implement this design pattern? i sure many of you will recommend some sort of MVP pattern, but MVVM/Presentation model is the way to go for me, because I'll want future WPF support. • Mimicking the UltraGridColumnChooser's drag & drop ability

  (Infragistics 2008 Vol. 3, CLR 2.0) Infragistics's UltraGrid comes with a column chooser user control, which is simply a vertical arrangement of columns with checkboxes that toggle a column's hidden state. In addition, it allows you to pick a column and drag it directly to the grid so you don't have to manually position it afterwards. (This is particularly handy when you already have a lot of visible columns and have no clue where the new one ended up.) I'm building my own column chooser based on an UltraTree. Getting the checkboxes to behave the same wasn't an issue, but I haven't found a way to drag a column from the tree to the grid and have it accept it. Unfortunately, I've also failed to catch an event (both on the column chooser side as well as on the grid side) where Infragistics's normal column chooser does this properly; the normal drag & drop events never seem to fire.

• DomainDataSource DataPager with silverlight 3 DataGrid & .Net RIA Services

  I have a simple datagrid example with silverlight 3, and am populating it with the .NET ria services using a DomainDataSource along with a DataPager declaratively (nothing in the code-behind), and am experiencing this problem: The LoadSize is 30, and the Page size is 15, and when the page is loaded, the 1st and 2nd page appear correctly, but when I go beyond the 2nd page, nothing shows up in the grid. This used to work in the silverlight 3 beta with the Mix 2009 preview of .NET Ria services, and I've got a really simple example and have verified that the Service on the web project gets called to load a new batch, but the grid doesn't show any data. Can anyone shed any light as to why grid displays data only for the initial load of data and not subsequent batches from the pager? • ASP.NET GridView second header row to span main header row

  I have an ASP.NET GridView which has columns that look like this: | Foo | Bar | Total1 | Total2 | Total3 | Is it possible to create a header on two rows that looks like this? | | Totals | | Foo | Bar | 1 | 2 | 3 | The data in each row will remain unchanged as this is just to pretty up the header and decrease the horizontal space that the grid takes up. The entire GridView is sortable in case that matters. I don't intend for the added "Totals" spanning column to have any sort functionality.
