• Interesting sessions/tips from RMOUG

  One of the sessions I was at at last week's RMOUG was a session on Temp Tablespace Groups. I had a look because I had no experience with this and it seemed to help with parallel processing and the allocation/usage of temp. You can read the excellent write-up at Kellyn Pedersen's blog - who did the session and all the work - here. So for all of those who may be seeing lot's of waits like enq: TS - Contention when you are doing hash joins and sorts, do have a look at the above blog post. I also had the chance to listen in at Stewart Bryson's session on Restartability (he had 3 R-s) where he gave very useful tips about how to deal with your data warehouse loads. Questions like archive log mode - should I or should I not were well covered. Flashback archives, also nice to hear about. Very nice talk, very interesting. Unfortunately he hasn't blogged about it yes, so no pointers to that one. Got to see a couple of other interesting sessions, and as conferences go got to meet some interesting Oracle folks from the region. As usual RMOUG was useful and fun. Off to the drawing boards to design next year's session!

  I have dnsmasq running as a dns server with a number of linux boxes using static ips that run several virtual hosts on subdomains. I currently have the following address line in my dnsmasq.conf to map the subdomain of a boxes address to the boxes static ip: address=/.devbox1.mydomain.com/192.168.1.3 address=/.devbox2.mydomain.com/192.168.1.4 e.g. site1.devbox1.mydomain.com > maps to devbox1 static ip, site1 virtual host site2.devbox1.mydomain.com > maps to devbox1 static ip, site2 virtual host site3.devbox2.mydomain.com > maps to devbox2 static ip, site3 virtual host I was wondering if I can change the machines over to DHCP addresses (instead of static) and have dnsmasq use the dhcp ip instead of the static one? Can I modify the address line to refer to the DHCP address (obviously, I cant hardcode the address)? I know I could add mac address to ip allocation, but I want to avoid this if possible.

  I have been working on little tool to simplify my life and perhaps yours as developer as well. It is basically a command line tool that allows you to execute queries on your compiled .NET code base. The main purpose is to find out how big the impact of an api change would be if you changed this or that.  Now you can do high level operations like Diff public types for breaking changes. Who uses a method? Who uses a type? Who uses implements an interface? Who references me? What format has the binary  (32/64, Managed C++, Pure IL, Unmanaged)? Search for all event subscribers and unsubscribers. A unique feature is to check for event subscription imbalances. Forgotten event subscriptions are the 90% cause of managed memory leaks. It is done at a per class level. If one class does subscribe to one event more often than it does unsubscribe it is treated as possible event subscription imbalance. Another unique ability is to search for users of string literals which allows you to track users of a string constant which is not possible otherwise. For incremental builds the ShowRebuildTargets command can be used to identify the dependant targets that need a rebuild after you did compile one assembly. It has some heuristics in place to determine the impact of breaking changes and finds out which targets need to be recompiled as well. It has a ton of other features and a an API to access these things programmatically so you can build upon these simple queries create even better tools. Perhaps we get a Visual Studio plug in? You can download it from CodePlex here. It works via XCopy deployment. Simply let it run and check the command line help out. The best feature in my opinion is that the output of nearly all commands can be piped to Excel for further analysis. Since it does read also the pdbs it can show you the source file name and line number as well for all matches. The following picture shows the output of a –WhousesType query. The following command checks where type from BaseLibraryV1.dll are used inside DependantLibV1.dll. All matches are printed out with the reason and matching item along with file and line number. There is even a hyper link to the match which will open Visual Studio. ApiChange -whousestype "*" BaseLibraryV1.dll -in DependantLibV1.dll –excel The "*” is the actual query which means all types. The syntax is the same like in C# just that placeholders are allowed ;-). More info's can be found at the Codeplex Documentation.     The tool was developed in a TDD style manner which means that it is heavily tested and already used by a quite large user base inside the company I do work for. Luckily for you I got the permission to make it public so you take advantage of it. It is fully instrumented with tracing. If you find bugs simply add the –trace command line switch to find out what is failing and send me the output. How is it done? Your first guess might be that it uses reflection. Wrong. It is based on Mono Cecil a free IL parser with a fantastic API to access all internals of a managed assembly. The speed is awesome and to make it even faster I did make the tool heavily multi threaded. The query above did execute in 1.8s with the Excel output. On a rather slow machine I can analyze over 1500 assemblies in less than 40s with a very low memory consumption. The true power of Mono Cecil is that I can load an assembly like any other data file. I have no problems unloading a file but if I would have used reflection I would need to unload a whole AppDomain just to get rid of one assembly in my memory. Just to give you a glimpse how ApiChange.Api.dll can be used I show you one of the unit tests:           public void Can_Find_GenericMethodInvocations_With_Type_Parameters()         { // 1. Without this fantastic piece of code it would have been much much harder. There are other options around like the Common Compiler Infrastructure  Metadata Api which should do the same thing but it was not a real option since the Microsoft reader did fail on even simple assemblies (at least in September 2009 this was the case). Besides this I found the CCI Apis much harder to use. The only real competitor was Reflector which does support many things but does not let me access his cool high level analyze commands. So I decided to dig into the IL specs and as a result you can query your compiled binaries from the command line or programmatically. The best thing is you try it out for yourself and give me some feedback what you miss. • How to manage focus for a small set of simple widgets

  I'm developing a set of simple widgets for a small (128x128) display. For example I'd like to have a main screen with an overlay menu which I can use to toggle visibilty of main screen elements. Each option would be an icon with a box around it while it is selected. Button (left, up, right, down, enter) events should be given to the widget that has "focus". Focus is a simple thing to understand when using a GUI, but I'm having trouble implementing this. Can you suggest a simple concept for managing focus and input events? I have these simple ideas: Only one widget can have focus, so I need a single pointer to that widget. When this widget gets some kind of "cycle" input (as in "highlight the next item in this list"), the focus is given to a different widget. a widget must have a way of telling the application which widget the focus is given to next. if a widget cannot give a "next focus" hint, the application must be able to figure out where the focus should go. Widgets are currently structured like this: A widget can have a parent, which is passed to the constructor. Widgets are created statically, as I want to avoid dynamic memory allocation (I only have 16kB of RAM and I'd like to have control over that). widgets have siblings, implemented as an intrusive linked list (they have a next member). A parent has a pointer to the head of its list of children. Input events are arguments to the widgets buttonEvent methods which can accept or ignore that event. If it ignores the event, it can pass the event to its parent. My Questions: How can I manage focus for these widgets? Am I making this too complicated?

• Strategy for clients to retrieve real-time log from HTTP server

  I have an HTTP Server Service application which has its own logging mechanism. It's written in Delphi. I would like to provide a way for multiple clients to connect to this service and get a real-time update of the log. The log in the service moves rather fast, there's a lot of things to log. There may be up to 50 messages within 1 second at times. The existing log which is already implemented is not saved, it's only kept in the memory of the server service - where I will need to distribute it to any client which needs it. Once all clients have a log message, it should be deleted. I intend to use HTTP to "ask" the server for the log, and respond with an XML packet. The connections are not keep-alive. The only problem is, the server should only send the client those log records which it needs, not everything. I have no way of the server pushing the log to the clients in real-time, so each client needs to repeatedly ask the server for the latest log records. This HTTP Server is very lightweight, and there is no session management. There isn't even any type of authentication. The only way I see is for a client to register its self on the server, and whenever a log is issued on the server, it creates a copy of the log for each client, where each client has a log queue (string list). However, suppose there are 100 clients connected and expecting to receive this log. That means the server must create 100 copies of each log, add this log to the end of each client log queue, and wait for the client to request it. At that point, when the server replies with the XML log, it should flush (delete) whatever's in the queue. I'm worried however that this could cause memory issues. Each client log queue might get 100 log messages before the client requests the latest logs. How should I go about doing this in the fastest way possible without hindering the performance of the server? I'm trying to avoid having to create a copy of each log for each client.

  I am using Asus U56E laptop and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows 8, I am unable to connect to the Wireless. I have been trying to solve this problem since two weeks and couldn't solve it. Please help. Any answer would be appreciated. • Cannot boot into ubuntu 12.10

  Below given are the steps which I followed to install ubuntu 12.10 with existing windows 8 in my machine. I downloaded ubuntu 12.10 into my disk and made it bootable from my usb by selecting that iso file. Then restared my mahine and in BIOS I selected boot from usb. Went into Linux os and selected install ubuntu alongside windows 8. It asked for memory allocation and I selected 550 GB for Ubuntu and 404GB for Windows. After that it completed ubuntu installation. The booted into my windows 8 and used easyBCD to add a new entry. Ubuntu grup2 Now the easyBCD shows, There are a total of 4 entries listed in the bootloader.
