Places to store basic data

I am using PHP. I'm building a fully modular CMS, which is destined for the public. Some people might view this as a framework, but I intend to write a set of extensions for it, extensions that will make it a CMS :P Because it's completely modular I have a problem figuring out how to load extensions. Practically I need to get the list of active extensions, so I can load them inside my base class. I load them by reading some file headers, which contain a "dependency" field. That field decides the order in which I have to instantiate the objects. The problem is that when the CMS starts I have no database interface, because that's an extension too, so I can't store the active extensions list in the database :) You might ask how are extensions activated in the first place. Well - in the administration interface, which is an extension as well (obviously on first install of the CMS there will be some extensions active by default). Could writing that list inside a text file be a solution? The problem is that a lot of hosts are not very nice with scripts when they write files. And since this CMS is public I might have a problem here?

Keeping a domain model consistent with actual data

Recently domain driven design got my attention, and while thinking about how this approach could help us I came across the following problem. In DDD the common approach is to retrieve entities (or better, aggregate roots) from a repository which acts as a in-memory collection of these entities. After these entities have been retrieved, they can be updated or deleted by the user, however after retrieval they are essentially disconnected from the data source and one must actively inform the repository to update the data source and make is consistent again with our in-memory representation. What is the DDD approach to retrieving entities that should remain connected to the data source? For example, in our situation we retrieve a series of sensors that have a specific measurement during retrieval. Over time, these measurement values may change and our business logic in the domain model should respond to these changes properly. E.g., domain events may be raised if a sensor value exceeds a predefined threshold. However, using the repository approach, these sensor values are just snapshots, and are disconnected from the data source. Does any of you have an idea on how to solve this following the DDD approach?

How would you model an objects representing different phases of an entity life cycle?

I believe the scenario is common mostly in business workflows - for example: loan management the process starts with a loan application, then there's the loan offer, the 'live' loan, and maybe also finished loans. all these objects are related, and share many fields all these objects have also many fields that are unique for each entity the variety of objects maybe large, and the transformation between the may not be linear (for example: a single loan application may end up as several loans of different types) How would you model this? some options: an entity for each type, each containing the relevant fields (possibly grouping related fields as sub entities) - leads to duplication of data. an entity for each object, but instead of duplicating data, each object has a reference to it's predecessor (the loan doesn't contain the loaner details, but a reference to the loan application) - this causes coupling between the object structure, and the way it was created. if we change the loan application, it shouldn't effect the structure of the loan entity. one large entity, with fields for the whole life cycle - this can create 'mega objects' with many fields. it also doesn't work well when there's a one to many or many to many relation between the phases.

Most efficient way to store this collection of moduli and remainders?

I have a huge collection of different moduli and associated with each modulus a fairly large list of remainders. I want to store these values so that I can efficiently determine whether an integer is equivalent to any one of the remainders with respect to any of the moduli (it doesn't matter which, I just want a true/false return). I thought about storing these values as a linked-list of balanced binary trees, but I was wondering if there is a better way? EDIT Perhaps a little more detail would be helpful. As for the size of this structure, it will be holding about 10s of thousands of (prime-1) moduli and associated to each modulus will be a variable amount of remainders. Most moduli will only have one or two remainders associated to it, but a very rare few will have a couple hundred associated to it. This is part of a larger program which handles numbers with a couple thousand (decimal) digits. This program will benefit more from this table being as large as possible and being able to be searched quickly. Here's a small part of the dataset where the moduli are in parentheses and the remainders are comma separated: (46) k = 20 (58) k = 15, 44 (70) k = 57 (102) k = 36, 87 (106) k = 66 (156) k = 20, 59, 98, 137 (190) k = 11, 30, 68, 87, 125, 144, 182 (430) k = 234 (520) k = 152, 282 (576) k = 2, 11, 20, 29, 38, 47, 56, 65, 74, ...(add 9 each time), 569 I had said that the moduli were prime, but I was wrong they are each one below a prime.

403 error after adding javascript to masterpage for sharepoint.

I am attempting to add highslide-with-html.js from http://highslide.com/ to my masterpage. I am receiving a 403 forbidden error when I use the provided masterpage. I have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033. Test javascript files such as pirate.js which consists solely of alert("Arr!"); have loaded from the same directory. I have provided the code for the masterpage. How to count differences between two files on linux?

Hi all, I need to work with large files and must find differences between two. And I don't need the different bits, but the number of differences. For the differ rows I come up with diff --suppress-common-lines --speed-large-files -y File1 File2 | wc -l And it works, but is there a better way to do it? And how to count the exact number of differences (with standard tools like bash, diff, awk, sed some old version of perl)? Thanks in advance

I have read that boost iostreams supposedly supports 64 bit access to large files semi-portable way. Their FAQ mentions 64 bit offset functions, but there is no examples on how to use them. Has anyone used this library for handling large files? A simple example of opening two files, seeking to their middles, and copying one to the other would be very helpful. Thanks.

Encrypted AES key too large to Decrypt with RSA (Java)

Hello, I am trying to make a program that Encrypts data using AES, then encrypts the AES key with RSA, and then decrypt. However, once i encrypt the AES key it comes out to 128 bytes. RSA will only allow me to decrypt 117 bytes or less, so when i go to decrypt the AES key it throws an error. One must have a ship, in order to access the list of ships. One must have a missile in order to be able to access the list of missiles. That feels awkward. Importing a large delimited file to a MySQL table

I have this large (and oddly formatted txt file) from the USDA's website. It is the NUT_DATA.txt file. But the problem is that it is almost 27mb! I was successful in importing the a few other smaller files, but my method was using file_get_contents which it makes sense why an error would be thrown if I try to snag 27+ mb of RAM. So how can I import this massive file to my MySQL DB without running into a timeout and RAM issue? I've tried just getting one line at a time from the file, but this ran into timeout issue. Using PHP 5.2.0. Here is the old script (the fields in the DB are just numbers because I could not figure out what number represented what nutrient, I found this data very poorly document. List of fundamental data structures - what am I missing?

I've been studying my fundamental data structures a bunch recently, trying to make sure I've got them down cold. By "fundamental", I mean the real basic ones. Fancy ones like Red-Black Trees and Bloom Filters are clearly worth knowing, but they're usually either enhancements of fundamental ones (Red-Black Trees are binary search trees with special properties to keep them balanced) or they're only useful in very specific situations (Bloom Filters). So far, I'm "fluent" in the following data structures: Arrays Linked Lists Stacks/Queues Binary Search Trees Heaps/Priority Queues Hash Tables However, I feel like I'm missing something. Are there any fundamental ones that I'm forgetting about? EDIT: Added these after posting the question Strings (suggested by catchmeifyoutry) Sets (suggested by Peter) Graphs (suggested by Nick D and aJ) B-Trees (Suggested by tloach) I'm a little on-the-fence about whether these are too fancy or not, but I think they're different enough from the fundamental structures (and important enough) to be worth studying as fundamental.

Paging problem in Data Form Webpart SP2010

I was working on some webpart in sharepoint designer 2010 and i decided to use the default custom paging.But i noticed the previous link page isn't working it basicalling just takes me back to the start page of the list and not the previous page after a good look i noticed micosoft is using "history.back()" which is suppose to work but it doesn't work well for paged data.Anyway before i started further investigation i found Hani Amr's solution at the right time and that did the trick.Hope that helps

Send large JSON data to WCF Rest Service

Hi I have a client web page that is sending a large json object to a proxy service on the same domain as the web page. The proxy (an ashx handler) then forwards the request to a WCF Rest Service. Using a WebClient object (standard .net object for making a http request) The JSON successfully arrives at the proxy via a jQuery POST on the client webpage. What are best practices for collecting, maintaining and ensuring accuracy of a huge data set?

I am posing this question looking for practical advice on how to design a system. Sites like amazon.com and pandora have and maintain huge data sets to run their core business. For example, amazon (and every other major e-commerce site) has millions of products for sale, images of those products, pricing, specifications, etc. etc. etc. Ignoring the data coming in from 3rd party sellers and the user generated content all that "stuff" had to come from somewhere and is maintained by someone. It's also incredibly detailed and accurate. How? How do they do it? Is there just an army of data-entry clerks or have they devised systems to handle the grunt work? My company is in a similar situation. We maintain a huge (10-of-millions of records) catalog of automotive parts and the cars they fit. We've been at it for a while now and have come up with a number of programs and processes to keep our catalog growing and accurate; however, it seems like to grow the catalog to x items we need to grow the team to y. I need to figure some ways to increase the efficiency of the data team and hopefully I can learn from the work of others. Any suggestions are appreciated, more though would be links to content I could spend some serious time reading. THANKS! Kyle
