• PHP> Sort query results by name while letting each letter be on the top sometimes

  Hi, I'm currently working on a site that will display a list of online shops, Each shop will be stored on my database and I'll be using PHP to select and display them. But since those shops will pay me, I want to let each shop to be on the top of the list sometimes, (for example if the shop name starts with a "Z", they will probably complain for being on the bottom of the list all the time, so I want to keep it fair). So I thought about letting each letter be on the top of the list for an hour, but i have no idea how to do that.. Is that even possible? Thanks in advance!

• PHP 5.1.6 ArrayAccess error when iterating over object

  Hi, I'm having to develop a site on PHP 5.1.6 and I've just come across a bug in my site which isn't happening on 5.2+. When using foreach() to iterate over an object, I get the following error: "Fatal error: Objects used as arrays in post/pre increment/decrement must return values by reference..."   Are there any tools that can list the names of classes used by a PHP file? For example, if I ran it on this file: <? class Test { public function __construct(Obj1 $x) { $y = new Obj2(); $str = "Obj3"; $z = new $str(); } } ?> it would report "Obj1" and "Obj2". If it were really smart it might report "Obj3" as well, but that's not essential. I'm trying to package up some code, and I want some help making sure that I didn't miss any dependencies. There's something called PHP_Depend, which can graph the number of dependencies, but can't report what they are.

  I have a class method that deals with dates: public function setAvailability(DateTime $start, DateTime $end){ } Since item availability can have lower limit, upper limit, both or none, I'd like to make setAvailability() accept NULL values as well. However, the NULL constant violates the type hinting: $foo->setAvailability(NULL, $end); triggers: Catchable fatal error: Argument 1 passed to Foo::setAvailability() must be an instance of DateTime, null given And, as far as I know, I cannot have a DateTime instance with no value. (Can I?) For a reason I cannot grasp, this seems to work: public function setAvailability(DateTime $start=NULL, DateTime $end=NULL){ } ... $foo->setAvailability(NULL, $end); But it looks like a hack that works by pure chance. How would you deal with unset dates in PHP classes?

  I am writing a badword filter in PHP. I have a list of badwords in an array and the method cleanse_text() is written like this: public static function cleanse_text($originalstring){ if (!self::$is_sorted) self::doSort(); return str_ireplace(self::$badwords, '****', $originalstring); } This works trivially, for exact matches, but I wanted to also censor words that have been disguised like 'ab*d' where 'abcd' is a bad word. This is proving to be a bit more difficult. Here are my questions: Is a badword filter worth bothering with (it is a site for professionals so a certain minimum decorum is required - I would have thought) Is it worth the hustle of trying to capture obvious work arounds like 'f*ck' - or should I not attempt to filter those out. Is there a better way of writing the cleanse_text() method above?

  In PHP I have an array that looks like this: $array[0]['width'] = '100'; $array[0]['height'] = '200'; $array[2]['width'] = '150'; $array[2]['height'] = '250'; I don't know how many items there are in the array. Some items can be deleted which explains the missing [1] key. I want to add a new item after this, like this: $array[]['width'] = '300'; $array[]['height'] = '500'; However the code above don't work, because it adds a new key for each row. It should be the same for the two rows above. A clever way to solve it? An alternative solution would be to find the last key. I failed trying the 'end' function.

  Hi, I'm a relative PHP newbie implementing a PayPal IPN listener and all seems to be working fine, except I dont really know how to check for a response code. I've tried something ugly with cURL but it doesn't work at all (I'm not understanding cURL). I've tried this piece of code that I grabbed from somewhere on the net: $fp = fsockopen('ssl://www.sandbox.paypal.com', 443, $errno, $errstr, 30); $response_headers = get_headers($fp); $response_code = (int)substr($headers[0], 9, 3); ... but it's not working (returns $response_code = 0). So right now, I'm debugging my IPN code without checking for a Response 200. Can anyone more experienced advise me on what's the proper/simple way to check this? Thanks

• Generate MySQL data dump in SQL from PHP

  I'm writing a PHP script to generate SQL dumps from my database for version control purposes. It already dumps the data structure by means of running the appropriate SHOW CREATE .... query. Now I want to dump data itself but I'm unsure about the best method. My requirements are: I need a record per row Rows must be sorted by primary key SQL must be valid and exact no matter the data type (integers, strings, binary data...) Dumps should be identical when data has not changed I can detect and run mysqldump as external command but that adds an extra system requirement and I need to parse the output in order to remove headers and footers with dump information I don't need (such as server version or dump date). I'd love to keep my script as simple as I can so it can be hold in an standalone file. What are my alternatives?

• Suppress error with @ operator in PHP

  In your opinion, is it ever valid to use the @ operator to suppress an error/warning in PHP whereas you may be handling the error? If so, in what circumstances would you use this? Code examples are welcome. Edit: Note to repliers. I'm not looking to turn error reporting off, but, for example, common practice is to use @fopen($file); and then check afterwards... but you can get rid of the @ by doing if (file_exists($file)) { fopen($file); } else { die('File not found'); } or similar. I guess the question is - is there anywhere that @ HAS to be used to supress an error, that CANNOT be handled in any other manner?

  Is it somehow possible to handle a download abort in PHP? In this specific case I am not speaking of a connection abort, but handling the event that triggers when the 'cancel' button in the browser download dialog button is clicked. Since this dialog already interprets the headers of the file that is to be download but does not actually start the download, it only seems logical there should be some way to catch this. Small (pseudo) code example to clear things up: // set some headers header('...'); // Question: what happens between the part where the headers are sent // and the actual data is being outputted to the client?   I just wanted to poll the community and see which plugins people are currently using to get all of these different technologies running in Eclipse. I saw this thread which mentioned Spket & WPT: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1575617/eclipse-which-plugins-for-html-javascript But I noticed that Spket doesn't seem to have been updated since October of 2009 so I'm wondering if it's still a good tool to use. I'm not sure what would be best for PHP since it seems like some of the tools are disjointed at the moment. For Actionscript I know I can just install the latest Flash Builder plugin and be done. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  I've perused the questions on ternary operators vs. if/else structures, and while I understand that under normal circumstances there is no performance loss/gain in using ternary operators over if/else structures, I've not seen any mention of this situation. Language specific to PHP (but any language agnostic details are welcome) does the interpreter reassign values in situations like this: $foo = 'bar' $foo = strlen($foo) > 3 ? substr($foo, 0, 3) : $foo; Since this would evaluate to $foo = $foo; is this inefficient, or does the interpreter simply overlook/discard this evaluation? On a side note, what about: !defined('SECURE') ? exit : null;

• PHP mysql_real_escape_string() returning `NULL`

  I'm using PHP Version 5.1.6 and trying to escape a query string from my $_GET array. However my script is returning a NULL after it's escaped. It seems that mysql_escape_string() works fine, but it's deprecated, so I don't want to use it. Having checked over the phpinfo() the MySQL lib is all loaded fine from what I can see. Has anyone experienced this kind of thing before? $term = $_GET['q']; var_dump($term); // string(7) "richard" echo "<br />"; $sterm = mysql_real_escape_string($term, $db); var_dump($sterm); // NULL It's very strange to me, I can't imagine why this function wouldn't work.

  I have seen some answers to this question in previous posts, but no one has given a real working example, just psuedo code. Has anyone ever done this before? Basically, what i have is a variable in javascript (jquery), and i want to use this variable to drive a query (for an overlay window) i am going to run in php. From what i have read you can do this using an ajax call to the same page so it doesnt refresh itself, but i must be missing something because i can't get it working... Any examples out there?   Hi, Im wondering about speed optimization in PHP. I have a series of files that are requested every page load. On average there are 20 files. Each file must be read an parsed if they have changed. And this is excluding that standard files required for a web page (HTML, CSS, images, etc). EG - client requests page - server outputs html, css, images - server outputs dynamic content (20+/- files combined and minified). What would be the best way to serve these files as fast as possible?

  Is the html tag safe to use in terms of browser support? Or should I generate a root path with PHP which i then add like this <a href="<?=BASE?>somepage.html">somepage</a> which makes up a absolute url. using the base tag like this <base href="<?=BASE?>" /> I am then able to use links like this <a href="somepage.html">somepage</a> now I am fully aware that it would be much easier to just do this without using the base tag: <a href="/somepage.html">somepage</a> but how do I test locally then with a base url of http://localhost/testsite/ ???
