Most awkward/misleading method in Java Base API ?

I was recently trying to convert a string literal into a boolean, when the method "boolean Boolean.getBoolean(String name)" popped out of the auto-complete window. There was also another method ("boolean Boolean.parseBoolean(String s)") appearing right after, which lead me to search to find out what were the differences between these two, as they both seemed to do the same. It turns out that what Boolean.getBoolean(String name) really does is to check if there exists a System property (!) of the given name and if its value is true. I think this is very misleading, as I'm definitely not expecting that a method of Boolean is actually making a call to System.getProperty, and just by looking at the method signature, it sure looks (at least to me) like it should be used to parse a String as a boolean. Sure, the javadoc states it clearly, but I still think the method has a misleading name and is not in the right place. Other primitive type wrappers, such as Integer also have a similar method. Also, it doesn't seem to be a very useful method to belong in the base API, as I think it's not very common to have something like -Darg=true. Maybe it's a good question for a Java position interview: "What is the output of Boolean.getBoolean("true")?". I believe a more appropriate place for those methods would be in the System class, e.g., getPropertyAsBoolean; but again, I still think it's unnecessary to have these methods in the base API. It'd make sense to have these in something like the Properties class, where it's very common to do this kind of type conversions. What do you think of all this ? Also, if there's another "awkward" method that you're aware of, please post it. N.B. I know I can use Boolean.valueOf or Boolean.parseBoolean to convert a string literal into a boolean, but I'm just looking to discuss the API design.

C/C++ macro/template blackmagic to generate unique name.

Macros are fine. Templates are fine. Pretty much whatever it works is fine. The example is OpenGL; but the technique is C++ specific and relies on no knowledge of OpenGL. Precise problem: I want an expression E; where I do not have to specify a unique name; such that a constructor is called where E is defined, and a destructor is called where the block E is in ends. For example, consider: class GlTranslate { GLTranslate(float x, float y, float z); { glPushMatrix(); glTranslatef(x, y, z); } ~GlTranslate() { glPopMatrix(); } }; Manual solution: { GlTranslate foo(1.0, 0.0, 0.0); // I had ti give it a name ..... } // auto popmatrix Now, I have this not only for glTranslate, but lots of other PushAttrib/PopAttrib calls too. I would prefer not to have to come up with a unique name for each var. Is there some trick involving macros templates ... or something else that will automatically create a variable who's constructor is called at point of definition; and destructor called at end of block? Hi, i m starting a new project that would basically take input from user and save them to database among about 30 screens, and i would like to find a framework that will allow the maximum number of these features out of the box : .net c#. windows form. unit testing continuous integration logging screens with lists, combo boxes, text boxes, add, delete, save, cancel that are easy to update when you add a property to your classes or a field to your database. auto completion on controls to help user find its way use of an orm like nhibernate easy multithreading and display of wait screens for user easy undo redo tabbed child windows search forms ability to grant access to some functionnalities according to user profiles mvp/mvvm or whatever design patterns either some code generation from database to c# classe or generation of database schema from c# classes some kind of database versioning / upgrade to easily update database when i release patches to application once in production automatic control resizing code metrics analysis some code generator i can use against my entities that would generate some rough form i can rearrange after code documentation generator ... At this point i have 3 options : Build from scratch on top of clr :( Find functionnalities among several open source framework and use them as a stack for infrastucture Find a "software factory" I know its lot but i really would like to use existing code to build upon so i can focus on business rules. What open source tools would u use to achieve these ?

Display: table-cell problems in chrome

NHibernate + Cannot insert the value NULL into...

I've got a MS-SQL database with a table created with this code CREATE TABLE [dbo].[portfoliomanager]( [idPortfolioManager] [int] NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY, [name] [varchar](45) NULL ) so that idPortfolioManager is my primary key and also auto-incrementing. Now on my Windows WPF application I'm using NHibernate to help with adding/updating/removing/etc. data from the database. Here is the class that should be connecting to the portfoliomanager table namespace PortfolioManager { [Class(Table="portfoliomanager",NameType=typeof(PortfolioManagerClass))] public class PortfolioManagerClass { [Id(Name = "idPortfolioManager")] [Generator(1, Class = "identity")] public virtual int idPortfolioManager { get; set; } [NHibernate.Mapping.Attributes.Property(Name = "name")] public virtual string name { get; set; } public PortfolioManagerClass() { } } } and some short code to try and insert something PortfolioManagerClass portfolio = new PortfolioManagerClass(); Portfolio.name = "Brad's Portfolios"; The problem is, when I try running this, I get this error: {System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'idPortfolioManager', table 'PortfolioManagementSystem.dbo.portfoliomanager'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. The statement has been terminated... with an outer exception of {"could not insert: [PortfolioManager.PortfolioManagerClass][SQL: INSERT INTO portfoliomanager (name) VALUES (?); select SCOPE_IDENTITY()]"} I'm hoping this is the last error I'll have to solve with NHibernate just to get it to do something, it's been a long process. Just as a note, I've also tried setting Class="native" and unsaved-value="0" with the same error. Thanks! Edit: Ok removing the 1, from Generator actually allows the program to run (not sure why that was even in the samples I was looking at) but it actually doesn't get added to the database. I logged in to the server and ran the sql server profiler tool and I never see the connection coming through or the SQL its trying to run, but NHibernate isn't throwing an error anymore. Starting to think it would be easier to just write SQL statements myself :(

Reduce white space between lines of text

I am creating a webpage (first time) and i'm following as much of the CSS rules and tags as I can. However, I ran into a problem with white space. I've underlined the first line of text but now the second line seems to have drifted below. I have a scenario, i need to send click events to an independent application. How can i do it using Windows Messaging or any other technique. So not fit for my need. Then i use. Getting the full-name of the current user, returns an empty string (C#/C++)

I try to get the full-name of the current log-in user (Fullname, not username). The following code C#, C++ works fine but on XP computers not connected to the Net, I get empty string as result if I run it ~20 minutes after login (It runs OK whithin the first ~20 minutes after login) A Win32 API (GetUserNameEx) is used rather that PrincipalContext since it PrincipalContext may takes up to 15 seconds when working offline. Prototyping Qt/C++ in Python

I want to write a C++ application with Qt, but build a prototype first using Python and then gradually replace the Python code with C++. Is this the right approach, and what tools (bindings, binding generators, IDE) should I use? Ideally, everything should be available in the Ubuntu repositories so I wouldn't have to worry about incompatible or old versions and have everything set up with a simple aptitude install. Is there any comprehensive documentation about this process or do I have to learn every single component, and if yes, which ones? Right now I have multiple choices to make: Qt Creator, because of the nice auto completion and Qt integration. Eclipse, as it offers support for both C++ and Python. Eric (haven't used it yet) Vim PySide as it's working with CMake and Boost.Python, so theoretically it will make replacing python code easier. PyQt as it's more widely used (more support) and is available as a Debian package. Edit: As I will have to deploy the program to various computers, the C++-solution would require 1-5 files (the program and some library files if I'm linking it statically), using Python I'd have to build PyQt/PySide/SIP/whatever on every platform and explain how to install Python and everything else.

Compile for mixed platform (32, 64) and reference a 32 or 64 bit DLL resolved at runtime

Using VS2010 under windows 32 or 64 bit. Our C# app calls a 3rd party DLL (managed) that interfaces to an unmanaged DLL. The 3rd party DLL API appears identical in 32 or 64 bit although underneath it links to a 32 or 64 bit unmanaged DLL. We want our C# app to run on either 32 or 64 bit OS, ideally it will auto detect the OS and load the appropriate 32rd party DLL - via a simple factory class which tests the Enviroment. So the neatest solution would be a runtime folder containing: OurApp.exe 3rdParty32.DLL 3rdPartyUnmanaged32.DLL 3rdParty64.DLL 3rdPartyUnmanaged64.DLL However, the interface for the managed 3rdParty 32 and 64 dll is identical so both cannot be referenced within the same VS2010 project: when adding the second the warning triangle is shown and it does not get referenced. Is my only answer to create two extra library DLL projects to reference the 3rdParty 32 and 64 Dlls? So I would end up with this project arrangement: Project 1: Builds OurApp.exe, dynamically creates an object for project2 or project3. Project 2: Builds OurApp32.DLL which references 3rdParty32.dll Project 3: Builds OurApp64.DLL which references 3rdParty64.dll

Fixing merge conflicts?

I have two remote branches, "grape" and "master". I'm currently on "grape". Now I switch to "master": git checkout master Now I want to pull all changes from "grape" into "master" - is this the way to do it?: git merge origin grape It's my understanding that git will then pull all the current state of the remote branch "grape" into my local copy of "master". It will try to auto-merge for me. If there are conflicts, the files in conflict will have some conflict text actually injected into the file. I then have to go into those files, and delete the chunk I don't want (essentially telling git how to merge these files). For each file in conflict, do I add and commit the changes again?: git add problemfile1.txt git commit -m "Fixed merge conflict." git add problemfile2.txt git commit -m "Fixed another merge conflict." ... after I've fixed all the merge conflicts like above, do I just push to "master" again to finish up the process?: git push origin master or is there something else we need to do when we get into this conflict state? Why pseudo-elements :before and :after appear in front of my DIV element and not behind?

I have a DIV element with this given class: .slideshow { background: white; width: 700px; height: 300px; padding:10px; margin: 0 auto; position: relative; box-shadow: 0px 0px 5px grey, 0px 10px 20px rgba(0,0,0,.1) inset; } I define those two pseudo-elements (:before and :after): .slideshow:before, .slideshow:after { content: " "; background: green; width: 50%; height: 50%; position: absolute; z-index: -10; } My problem is that those two pseudo-elements appear in front of my DIV and not behind. Is there any specific reason for this behaviour? Here is an example: EXAMPLE The Javascript part is a bit messy but i'm still working on it. Also I've noticed that if I delete all the JS part I don't have anymore this problem, but I don't think there is anything in the code that should modify the slideshow DIV SOLVED: The problem is in the javascript part where I have: $('.slideshow').css('-webkit-transform', 'rotate(0deg)'); Removing this line solved the problem. I guess that pseudo-elements :before and :after are not compatible with the property transform.

Hi, I want to save(export) contents of MyView, which extends TextView, into a bitmap. I followed the code: [this][1]. It works fine when the size of the text is small. But when there are lots of texts, and some of the content is out of the screen, what I got is only what showed in the screen. Responsive logo (image replacement) in html5boilerplate

I'm using the responsive version of html5 boilerplate via initializr.com. My site uses a custom logo so i added the .ir class to h1 .ir { background-color: transparent; border: 0; overflow: hidden; *text-indent: -9999px; } like this <h1 class="title ir">h1.title</h1> The documentation says Add the .ir class to any element you are applying image-replacement to. When replacing an element's content with an image, make sure to also set a specific background-image: url(pathtoimage.png);, width, and height so that your replacement image appears. So I added to the code these lines .ir { background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/yYnyJ.jpg); background-size: 100% auto; width:450px; height:450px } The problem are the specific width and height. PHP class_exists always returns true

I have a PHP class that needs some pre-defined globals before the file is included: File: includes/Product.inc.php if (class_exists('Product')) { return; } // This class requires some predefined globals if ( !isset($gLogger) || !isset($db) || !isset($glob) ) { return; } class Product { ... } The above is included in other PHP files that need to use Product using require_once. Anyone who wants to use Product must however ensure those globals are available, at least that's the idea. I recently debugged an issue in a function within the Product class which was caused because $gLogger was null. The code requiring the above Product.inc.php had not bothered to create the $gLogger. So The question is how was this class ever included if $gLogger was null? I tried to debug the code (xdebug in NetBeans), put a breakpoint at the start of Product.inc.php to find out and every time it came to the if (class_exists('Product')) clause it would simply step in and return thus never getting to the global checks. So how was it ever included the first time? This is PHP 5.1+ running under MAMP (Apache/MySQL). I don't have any auto loaders defined.

I am trying to avoid hard-coding coordinates if it is at all possible. Perhaps this is silly, and if so, that's a perfectly acceptable answer. I've run into this many times when working with custom UI. The most recent example is that I'm trying to replace the UINavigationItem plain-text title with a custom view. I want that view to fill the superview, but in addition, I want a UIActivityIndicatorView on the right side, inset about 2 pixels and centered vertically. The auto-resizing mask hasn't had a chance to do its thing yet, but I very much want those values so that I can compute the relative positions of other sub-views (here, the activity indicator). Is this possible without being ugly?

Problem inserting Pygames on a wxPython panel using Boa Constructor

Hello, im new in Python so im hoping to to get some help to figure out what is going wrong. Im trying to run a Pygames from within wxPython panel (made on Boa Constructor). To do that i followed the instructions on the http://wiki.wxpython.org/IntegratingPyGame but still it isn't working. JSP getParameter problem

I have a form, if the timer reach the form will auto redirect to the Servlet to update database. How to send data from an opened window back to its opener in WPF.

In WPF I have one window opening a second window that allows some data selections to occur on. Once the selections have been made I then want to submit/close the second/sub window and have the data pushed back to the opening/parent window. I can push data into the sub window from the parent via public properties, but have not worked out how to get it back the other way. Can anyone help please? If further selections are made on the email list, when the op clicks the done/submit/close button it pushes the new selection list back into the relevant TextBox on the first/parent window. Thanks

How can I concisely copy multiple SQL rows, with minor modifications?

I'm copying a subset of some data, so that the copy will be independently modifiable in future. One of my SQL statements looks something like this (I've changed table and column names): INSERT Product( ProductRangeID, Name, Weight, Price, Color, And, So, On ) SELECT @newrangeid AS ProductRangeID, Name, Weight, Price, Color, And, So, On FROM Product WHERE ProductRangeID = @oldrangeid and Color = 'Blue' That is, we're launching a new product range which initially just consists of all the blue items in some specified current range, under new SKUs. In future we may change the "blue-range" versions of the products independently of the old ones. I'm pretty new at SQL: is there something clever I should do to avoid listing all those columns, or at least avoid listing them twice? I can live with the current code, but I'd rather not have to come back and modify it if new columns are added to Product. In its current form it would just silently fail to copy the new column if I forget to do that, which should show up in testing but isn't great. I am copying every column except for the ProductRangeID (which I modify), the ProductID (incrementing primary key) and two DateCreated and timestamp columns (which take their auto-generated values for the new row). Btw, I suspect I should probably have a separate join table between ProductID and ProductRangeID. I didn't define the tables. This is in a T-SQL stored procedure on SQL Server 2008, if that makes any difference.
