Best platform for android and ios game?

Ok, this has been asked before, but not recently, and most of the answers were just 'buy a mac'. So we're a couple guys who've been making small flash games, and now we want to go mobile, and there seem to be lots of options. Does anyone here have experience with one or more of these platforms to tell us the pros and cons of each? Corona AIR 3 Rhodes Could someone with experience compare and contrast these to each other and native development? We want to cast the widest net with the least re-work so we'd like to target just Android and iPhone, and we'd like it to be an actual app in the market instead of just a mobile website. We have experience in Actionscript, Javascript, and C#.

C# on ubuntu 12.04

Is C# a good choice for ubuntu programming? E.g unity, or applications that will run on ubuntu? Am I doing good wanting to learn C# when I'm determined to stick with ubuntu and develop on it or for it? If not, can you give me reasons why? And which languages would be better than c# for ubuntu development? I already know c, c++, java(basics), php, mysql, python(basics). I like to learn new stuff, but stuff that worth my time. Does C# worth my time? If c# worth my time, here's what I have done and what I need: I installed all mono packages I could find on the ubuntu standard repositories. Now I want a good tutorial to get me started. I'm a complete noob with c# so a basic tutorial and how to compile run under ubuntu 12.04 would be great.

Performance impact of not implementing relationships at the database level?

Let's imagine a data model with customers and invoices. There is a 1 to n relationship between a customer and its invoices. We uses an ORM (like Hibernate). One can explicitely implement the 1-n relationship (using JPA for example) or not. If not, then one must do a bit more work to fetch invoices. However, it is much easier to maintain, improve and develop the data model of applications where relationships between objects are not explicitely implemented in the database. My question is, has anyone noticed a significant performance impact when not implementing the relationships in the database?

YouTube fullscreen not displaying

For some reason YouTube videos in my website do not get the fullscreen button, even if I added the parameter allowFullScreen set to true both in the object and embed tag. The allowFullScreen param is there, but the button won't show. Which would a game development company prefer; UDK experience or C++ game projects?

Which would a game development company prefer? A developer with experience in UDK engine ? or, a developer with projects made entirely in c++ with a graphics engine like Ogre3D? I think that a coder can demonstrate better his abilities with games made in c++, because it requires a knowledge deeper in many fields. However, currently there is a lot of companies that develop his games with UDK. Now I don't know if is better specialize in a game engine like UDK.

Continue with Java for pc or go to android? [on hold]

so I have been learning java from Deitel's learn java 9th edition. I am up to GUI's and a have a pretty good grasp on OOP etc. I want to go straight to the mobile app development scene, I believe I will learn a fair bit there on using API's, and other tools to develop apps. I am not sure weather I should carry on with PC coding (GUI's etc etc) or skip it all and go direct to learning the Android SDK. So, should I carry on, learn about sockets, writing and reading files, GUI's for PC etc or get a book and jump into android? Thanks a lot guys.

Custom .NET apps and clustering

So for a clustered environment - how would this work with your apps? what about your own custom .NET apps? Would there be a special way to develop them? I know that you can say create a simple Hello world app, and cluster that but they wouldnt be something you could see interms of the UI or anything, so they would effectively need to be developed as a Windows Service perhaps or even as a standard Console app which runs and not wait for user input but you wouldnt see any output from it (unless you redirect output to somewhere else) What im getting at here is... for those who have experience or developed a cluster application in .NET, how did you do it and what are the things to be aware of? For example we have the cloud service - fundamentally its built on clustering - if there is an outage, another node takes place and service is resumed as normal but we dont really see much of that downtime.

Language-independent sources on 2D collision detection [on hold]

While making a Pong clone with a friend, we had to implement some 2D collision detection. For research purposes, my friend dug up a book called "AdvancED Game Design with Flash" by Rex Van Der Spuy. This book was clearly targeted at implementing 2D collision detection in ActionScript, and I also have some problems with how the concepts are presented, e.g. presenting one method as better than another, without explaining that decision. Can anyone recommend some good material on 2D collision detection? I'd prefer it if it kept the implementation details as language-independent as possible, e.g. by implementing the concepts in pseudo-code. Language-specific materials are not completely unwelcome though, though I'd prefer those to be in either Java, C#, F# or Python or similar languages, as those are the ones I'm most familiar with. :-) Lastly, is there perhaps widely known and used book on collision detection that most people should know about, like a 'the book on 2D collision detection'?

Having trouble's understanding NIF model file format?

I'm attempting too develop a 3rd party application to make it easy to import 3d model part's into my mod for skyrim the plan was to have a fileviewer and preview window of the nif model but since , I don't know what the NIF file format actually is or where to get the vertex data from it or the hole nine yards of parsing a text file in detail I'm at a lost what to do. I'm very good at C++ but not at this super over complicated file formats , id much prefer .obj over the nif file format specification here -- http://niftools.sourceforge.net/doc/nif/index.html If someone could help me in understanding the file format in a natural and simple way and the exact parsing needed to create the 3D Model in the frustum and a explanation on how you figured that out would be happy to know. Where to go from here, how to improve / learn more

I finished University around 4 years ago double degree in Software Eng/Comp Sci. Got my first job at a startup in my final year, was with them for 2.5 years then started my own business. So far everything is going great, lots of clients and stead work etc, but coming right out of uni and into a start up I never had any form or senior software engineer guiding my work or suggesting improvements etc... Whats the best way for me to improve & learn more? Books? MS Exams? Other? I develop in C#, ASP.NET/MVC. Update The problem isn't really with releasing products, I've released quite a few which are up and running with customers happy. It's more with quality of code, best practices, how do I know something I am code is correct, it may work but there may be ways of coding it much more efficiently or by adhering to some kind of standard Cheers for any responses! Best way to create neon glow line effect in AS3?

What's the best way to create a neon glow line effect in Flash AS3? Say similar to what's going on in the game gravitron360 on the xbox 360? Would it be a good idea to create movieclips with plain lines drawn in them and then apply a glow filter to them? or perhaps just apply the glow filter to the entire movieclip layer the movieclips are on? or just draw them manually and create a glow effect by converting the lines to fills and then softening edges? (wouldn't blend as well but would be the fastest CPU wise?) Thanks for any help

Error after installing Lubuntu 14.04 through liveUSB

A friend asked me to install ubuntu on his toshiba NB 200 netbook to replace windows xp. I formatted the flash drive, ran an nb5sum check on the iso and after running netbootin , I checked the drive for errors. No problems so far. During the installation, while everything seemed normal, the installation regularly paused until I pressed a button or moved the mouse. After restarting, it doesn't boot and it starts a shell showing : "General error mounting filesystems A maintenance shell will now be started CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system " Any ideas? Any help is appreciated!

Finding a publisher for Windows Phone Marketplace - I'm from an unsupported country

Hello,I'd like to develop apps for Windows Phone 7,but I can't register at AppHub,because my country (Slovakia) is not supported. A guy from Microsoft said that I need to find someone under whom I'd publish those apps. Where would I find somebody who'd be willing to register there and basically act as my publisher? I'm risking that he'd take my app earnings and disappear if it's not an honest person. What would the "publisher" risk by signing his name under my apps? Or are any of you willing to do it?

Becoming an expert vs boredom [closed]

I am a college student, and I love to program, period. I code all kinds of things in different kinds of languages. Although I enjoy programming, I have an extremely hard time sticking to one project for a long time. I attribute this shortcoming to my high level of curiosity, exploring different technologies, languages, libraries, etc. What would be best? Should I settle down more and spend time on becoming an expert in one or two programming fields, or should I be more of a jack of all trades, trying out all kinds of new technologies, languages, programming methods, etc.? I'm guessing that somewhere in the middle would be best. I'm always amazed at how many developers are able to create one or two projects, and develop on them for years. What techniques do you guys employ to help you stay focused on a project?

How are USB ports related to the computer power, and why would they cause my computer to freeze?

I have an issue with my new Toshiba laptop. Whenever I plug in an external USB device, if the laptop is not plugged in to the wall, the laptop freezes. However, nothing happens if the laptop is plugged in to the wall. When I say the laptop freezes, I mean it really freezes. The only way to recover is to hard reboot. My question is, what could be causing this? Could it be the extra power drain from the sub devices that causes this (even the simplest flash drives cause a freeze)? Please help me out, it's very annoying. Thanks

I found the basic difference between appmobi and phonegap is appMobi offers a complete cloud-based development system that includes a the XDK development tool. ie It's possible to develop Apple apps without owning a Mac using appMobi. I want to know Is there any differences between apk/ipa created using Appmobi and apk/ipa created using PhoneGap? Is there any difference in native features that can be used ? Also other differences between these two.

How can I format my active hard drive to NTFS?

Believe it or not, I'm not too happy with Ubuntu. Well, let me rephrase that. I like it, but the only thing I don't like about it is that it's too much of a hassle to get a game to work. I'm trying to install Windows 7 with a 4GB flash drive, but my error that comes up is that my hard drive I'm trying to install on is in ext4. I need to format it to read NTFS. I can't seem to find any topics on how to format an active hard drive. I found a topic that explains how to move Ubuntu to a new drive, but it's a bit confusing to me. Please help! (Please don't disregard this topic just because I want to go back to windows)

I can't find good books about Windows Operating System Programming Topic Examples; Explaining Windows 7 (or even 8) registry. Which registry entry turn on/off "showing desktop icons" Or, What is Windows registry defrag?, How can you defrag registry?, How can you optimize windows startup for( Windows 7 ) etc. I googled my questions, find msdn-some stackoverflow topics etc. But I can't find a book about low-level explaining current windows 7 operating system... How could your company's learning/development department best serve you?

I'll preface my question with a disclaimer - I am not an engineer, I'm just someone who works with them full-time, in a learning and development capacity. Given that, one of the comments I get regularly from the engineers I'm tasked with developing is that they feel that they're having solutions (both technical and non-technical) for development "pushed" at them vs. anyone from my field consulting with them to determine what they really need. So my question is - if you could give your company a list of the top 3-5 things they could do - in a classroom, or elsewhere - to develop meaningful skills that would help you be a better engineer, a better employee, and one more likely to STAY with the company for the long haul, what would make the cut and why? Does e-commerce platform matter for branding

The place I work is now looking into developing a new e-commerce site on the Magento platform. Magento will fill all of our needs. I was just wondering if it is in anyway unprofessional doing it this way (Impression is something we are really worried about), will people who visit the site look at our business different knowing we used Magento or any other e-commerce platform. There are ways to find out. I use Chrome Sniffer to find out what platforms are used to develop each site, there are other tools available for different browsers. Bottom-line: Will an e-commerce platform affect the trust in my brand?
