  I have a parent master table that is generic enough to hold the common information of the children. Since the children were substantially different, we created separate tables for them. So I have something like this: tblMaster -------- MasterID int Name varchar(50) --Common to all children and there are a bunch of fields like this ChildType int -- Type of Child either ChildOne or ChildTwo ChildID int -- need to store ChildOneID or ChildTwoID depending on type of Child, so that i can refer to children tblChild1 -------- ChildOneID int IDENTITY tblChild2 --------- ChildTwoID int IDENTITY Should I have a ChildID in the master that is either ChildOneID or ChildTwoID based on the ChildType column? I have a number of children and I have simplified it for this question. The other way is to add ChildOneID and ChildTwoID as columns in the master, but since i have a number of columns, I will have a lot of null columns EDIT: Any help is appreciated

• Problem with events and ParseControl

  I'm adding a control (linkbutton) dynamically using ParseControl and it's fine except when I specify an event handler. If I use: Dim c As Control = ParseControl("<asp:LinkButton id=""btnHide"" runat=""server"" text=""Hide"" OnClick="btnHide_Click" />") it correctly adds the control to the page but the click event doesn't fire. If instead I find the control in the controls collection and manually wire up the event it works fine. I've tried loading in both Page_Init and Page_Load and it's the same thing either way. Any ideas?

• Does javascript event handling occur inside or outside the program flow?

  This question is related to Javascript event handling and flow control, but it is one step beyond. The question that remains unanswered is: when an event is fired and control is returned to the browser, could the browser decide to handle other events first (fired by other scripts or user action) (A), or will it always handle my event directly (B)? The question is important, because in case (B) you can rely on the fact that nothing has been changed between firing the event and the event handler, while (A) gives no guarantees whatsoever. My first guess is (B), how else could stopPropagation() and preventDefault() work? But giving it a second thought, it is no hard evidence.

• Resolving Assemblies, the fuzzy way

  Here's the setup: A pure DotNET class library is loaded by an unmanaged desktop application. The Class Library acts as a plugin. This plugin loads little baby plugins of its own (all DotNET Class Libraries), and it does so by reading the dll into memory as a byte-stream, then Assembly asm = Assembly.Load(COFF_Image); The problem arises when those little baby plugins have references to other dlls. Since they are loaded via the memory rather than directly from the disk, the framework often cannot find these referenced assemblies and is thus incapable of loading them. I can add an AssemblyResolver handler to my project and I can see these referenced assemblies drop past. I have a reasonably good idea about where to find these referenced assemblies on the disk, but how can I make sure that the Assmebly I load is the correct one? In short, how do I reliably go from the System.ResolveEventArgs.Name field to a dll file path, presuming I have a list of all the folders where this dll could be hiding)?

• .NET TreeView causes application to crash when trying to check Parent node

  I have a TreeView with check boxes, and when a user checks a child node, I want to go up the tree and check each parent. However, for some reason my application blows up whenever I touch the parent node. For the nodes in my tree, I've extended TreeNode to create my own objects with some data that I need to store in them, but I still reference them as TreeNodes when checking/unchecking. I have a set of collection classes off a generic base of List. These classes have public constructors but contain only static methods that return collections. MessageBox(g_hMainhWnd, buffer, "Oops!", MB_OK | MB_ICONERROR); ShellExecute(0, "open", "http://intranet/crash_handler.php", NULL, "", SW_SHOWNORMAL); For a little context, this code is called inside our own exception handler, which was registered with SetUnhandledExceptionFilter() Most of the time, I see the message box, and then it launches a web browser. • NoClassDefFoundError with new eclipse bundle

  I am informed by a customer that they are receiving an error. On the report they filed it is continuosly coming up with NoClassDefFoundError. It appears none of my other customers are having this issue. I'm not having this issue running the app on my Motorola Droid Maxx. The customer is running the app on a rooted Droid Bionic. Everything was working fine on my version at 2.3 but when I updated it to 2.4, this issue arose. I also replaced my computer with a new and now I am running windows 8 and installed the adt bundle. The only change I made to the file in question in changing a -90 to -85. Below is the code...I have also included below the code the error report. • Manipulating individual rows of a datagrid

  Hey, recently I started working on a webpage that has a datagrid. I understand how to add datasources and that sort of thing, or at least I am starting to get it. But my question is about manipulating individual rows or cells. Is that only possible during the databind event handler, that is the only place I have been able to do it so far. I am sure there is a more abstract way of doing the things I want to do, but there are times where I just want to say Datagrid.add(row). I mean, if the datagrid is made up of a certain object type, can I make a new object of that type and just chuck it on the end? I am still new to this stuff, so perhaps what I want to do would defeat the purpose of this added abstraction, but figured I would ask around. Thanks for any advice, tips, or tricks people feel like sharing. Edit: for clarification I am using c#, entity framework, asp.net, and an SQL database.

  Hello, guys! Very important question: Please, look at my project (300Kb). I can`t use MFC/ATL, pure C++ only. I have COM library (niapi.dll), but no sources/headers available, dll only. There is class for connecting to server (NiApi::SrvrSession), class has login event handler (NiApi::SrvrSession::OnLogin). I used #import "NiApi.dll" to generate wrappers/information, then ISrvrSessionPtr session(L"NiApi.SrvrSession"); to create object, then trying session->put_OnLogin(); to assign events, but there is no one put_On or such member. niapi.tlh have _ISrvrSessionEvents struct inside, but it have no relations with SrvrSession. I need to use events from NiApi::SrvrSession for handling connection status. Please help or my boss kill me! (sorry for broken english, I read better than speak;)

  I have a asp.net app that I want to disable the buttons as soon as they are clicked in order to prevent multiple submissions. I'd like to use jquery for this as the site already liberally uses it anyway. What I've tried is: $(document).ready(function () { $("#aspnetForm").submit(function () { $('input[type=submit]', $(this)).attr("disabled", "disabled"); }) }); The above will disable the button, and the page submits, but the asp.net button on click handler is never called. Simply removing the above and the buttons work as normal. Is there a better way?

• handling activity destruction in multithreaded android app

  Hi, I have a multithreded app where background threads are used to load data over network or from disk/db. Every once in a while user will perform some action e.g. fetch news over network, which will spawn a background AsyncTask, but for some reason user will quit the app (press back button so that activity gets destroyed). In most such scenarios, I make appropriate checks in the background thread after it returns from n/w i/o, so that it won't crash by accessing members of the activity that is destroyed by now. However some corner cases are left where crashes happen, because the background thread would access some member of activity that is now null. Do other Android developers have some generic/recommended framework to handle such scenarios? These are the times when I wish android would have guaranteed termination of all threads when activity destroys (in the same way that regular linux process cleans up when it's quit)... but I guess Android devs had good reasons for not exposing process lifetimes through the api.

• Determining whether a file is a duplicate

  Is there a reliable way to determine whether or not two files are the same? For example, two files with the same size and type may or may not be the same binarilly (yeah, I know it's not really a word). I assume that comparing one or two checksums of the files will help, but I wonder: How reliable are checksums at determining whether two files are different; what are the chances of two different files having the same checksum? Would reliability increase by applying additional checksum comparisons? Which checksum algorithm(s) would be the most efficient and/or reliable? Any ideas, suggestions or thoughts are appreciated! P.S. The code for this is being written in Java running on a nix system, but generic or platform agnostic input is most helpful.

  I am looking at several projects, all with roughly the same fucntionality. Some instruments collect some data (or control some functionality). They commmunicate by Internet (Etehrnet/wifi/GPRS/sasatellite) with a databse server which stores the measurements and provides a browser based means of qeurying the data, prodcuing reports, etc (and possibly also allows control of the remote equipment). Can anyone recommend a good book describing an approach to developing such a software architecture, keeping it generic, which tools, languages. test methods, etc to use? (note to self: ask a similar question about possible existing frameworks)

I want these elements to change color whenever the mouse cursor hovers over them, so I implemented hoverEnterEvent (and hoverLeaveEvent): void MyGraphicsItem::hoverEnterEvent(QGraphicsSceneHoverEvent* event) { update (boundingRect()); } However, this event handler code is never executed. Parameter name: value and it is right. How can I transform the result to IList<LookupApplication>? Thanks
