  • Will New Horizons have to bailout?

    - by TATWORTH
At http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/news_center/news/20121016.php, there is an interesting post about the challenge facing the New Horizons as to whether to allow the spacecraft to remain on the current trajectory which will take it between Pluto and the orbit of Charon, the closest in known moon of Pluto. Given that the current round-trip light time is 6 hrs 53 minutes, a decision to go for a bail-out fly-past must be taken some 10 days in advance of the actual fly-past.

  • Wubi installation: I get os freezes which make me have to hard reboot

    - by user54774
Wubi installation has been going a success for me, but one problem is that I get freezes, My Mouse works I can move it round but I can't click or right click. Sometimes my keyboard works and so I can shutdown safely using commands, but other times the keyboard doesn't work. One example of this is when I was running minecraft and youtube. and to off the laptop the only way was to hard reboot. Does anyone have a solution to this?

  • Is there a known algorithm for scheduling tournament matchups?

    - by barfoon
Just wondering if there is a tournament scheduling algorithm already out there that I could use or even adapt slightly. Here are my requirements: A variable number of opponents belonging to a variable number of teams/clubs each must be paired with an opponent Two opponents cannot be from the same club If there are an odd number of players, 1 of them randomly is selected to get a bye Any algorithms related to this sort of requirement set would be appreciated. EDIT: I only need to run this a maximum of one time, creating matchups for the first 'round' of the tournament.

  • How to tune down the Hyperic built-in postgresql database for a small setup

    - by Svish
We are testing out Hyperic 4.5.1 in a quite small environment for now. Currently there are just 1-5 agents and there probably won't be any more than 10-15. When I run ps ax there are 20(!) postgres processes running. For a small setup like this, that can't be necessary, can it? I'm a software developer and don't have much experience with setting up servers and such though, so don't really know. Either way, what settings are appropriate for a small Hyperic setup like this? Current, default and untouched configuration file, hqdb/data/postgresql.conf: # ----------------------------- # PostgreSQL configuration file # ----------------------------- # # This file consists of lines of the form: # # name = value # # (The '=' is optional.) White space may be used. Comments are introduced # with '#' anywhere on a line. The complete list of option names and # allowed values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation. The # commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values. # # Please note that re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it # to the default value, unless you restart the server. # # Any option can also be given as a command line switch to the server, # e.g., 'postgres -c log_connections=on'. Some options can be changed at # run-time with the 'SET' SQL command. # # This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a # SIGHUP. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the # server for the changes to take effect, or use "pg_ctl reload". Some # settings, which are marked below, require a server shutdown and restart # to take effect. # # Memory units: kB = kilobytes MB = megabytes GB = gigabytes # Time units: ms = milliseconds s = seconds min = minutes h = hours d = days #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # FILE LOCATIONS #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # The default values of these variables are driven from the -D command line # switch or PGDATA environment variable, represented here as ConfigDir. #data_directory = 'ConfigDir' # use data in another directory # (change requires restart) #hba_file = 'ConfigDir/pg_hba.conf' # host-based authentication file # (change requires restart) #ident_file = 'ConfigDir/pg_ident.conf' # ident configuration file # (change requires restart) # If external_pid_file is not explicitly set, no extra PID file is written. #external_pid_file = '(none)' # write an extra PID file # (change requires restart) #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # CONNECTIONS AND AUTHENTICATION #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # - Connection Settings - #listen_addresses = 'localhost' # what IP address(es) to listen on; # comma-separated list of addresses; # defaults to 'localhost', '*' = all # (change requires restart) port = 9432 # (change requires restart) max_connections = 100 # (change requires restart) # Note: increasing max_connections costs ~400 bytes of shared memory per # connection slot, plus lock space (see max_locks_per_transaction). • Windows 7 machine, can't connect remotely until after ping

    - by rjohnston
I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium) machine that doubles as a media centre and subversion server. There's a couple of problems with this setup, when connecting to the server from an XP (SP3) machine: Firstly, the machine won't respond to it's machine name until after it's IP address has been pinged. Here's an example: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping damascus Ping request could not find host damascus. Please check the name and try again. C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping 192.168.1.17 Pinging 192.168.1.17 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.17: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128 ... Ping statistics for 192.168.1.17: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 2ms, Average = 1ms C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping damascus Pinging damascus [192.168.1.17] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.17: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 .... Ping statistics for 192.168.1.17: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms C:\Documents and Settings\Rob> Likewise, subversion commands with either the machine name or IP address will fail until the machine's IP address is pinged. Occasionally, the machine won't respond to pings on it's IP address, it'll just come back with "Request timed out". The svn server is VisualSVN, if that helps... Any ideas?

  • MySQL config for 2GB ram

  • Windows 7 VM log on lockout

    - by AKa
My Windows 7 XP Mode virtual machine has just locked me out of password log on. Two years of use and it never required I use a password on wake up, I never asked for that. Suddenly yesterday, password required! I located password and used it successfully a couple of times, but now even that is not good enough! Perhaps (unfairly) because I tried to get to the bottom of the new phenomenon and removed the password from the user accounts? Permissions are still set to ok for all users. I have been all the way through the settings I can access with the VM file hibernated, and have deleted the previously saved log on info, which always previously worked automatically as charged. Now when I attempt to log on it asks me for credentials, seems like progress, but when I offer them, and check the "remember my credentials" box, I still get the splash screen "The system could not log you on. [reminder about caps...]" !! Round and round. Back up and restore point versions of the VM toss me back into the same log on loop. There are no other machines on any network, I am the administrator and sole user. It must be specifically about the log on, a speck of dust corruption ... is there a way around this? I tried creating a new VM but the black inner box gets stuck at one point requesting I insert a boot disc. Thanks for input, AKa

  • How to set android lock screen image

    - by robintw
Hi, I'm just getting started with android programming, and want to see if there is a way to programmatically set the lock screen image. I've found various ways of setting the wallpaper in the API, but I can't seem to find the equivalent ways of setting the lock screen image. I've seen various posts saying that customising the lock screen by adding widgets or bits of applications is not possible, but surely there must be a way to set the image programmatically? Cheers, Robin

  • Redirect to a web server depending on location with nginx

    - by fceruti
Im working on a web site that has to be reachable from many countries under the same domain. Id like to know how can I receive a request with nginx (or any other static file server), and send it to different web servers depending on IP's location. I mean, what is the point on having multiple db machines on country A and B, if the server that serves you the page is chosen by round robin. Maybe theres another solution to my problem, and I would be very happy if someone can explain it to me.
