• Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 SSIS are oversized

  In this case i'm old style and loved 'my fathers DTS' from SQL 2000. Most of the cases i have to import a flatfile into a table. In a second step i use some procedures (with the new MERGE-Statement) to process the imported content. For Export, i define a export-table and populate it with a store proc (containing a MERGE-Statement) and in a second step the content will be exported to a flat file. In some cases there is no flat file because there is annother sql-server or in rare cases an ODBC-Connection to a sybase or similar. What do you think? When it comes to complex ETL-Stuff the SSIS may be the right tool...but i haven't seen such a case yet.

• Is Classic ADO still viable for a mixed managed/unmanaged App?

  We have a complex architecture with much logic in unmanaged code that needs database access. Currently this is via ODBC drivers and MFC classes and we're considering the issues of migrating our abstraction layer to use ADO or ADO.Net. In the latter case we'd have to be pushing database logic back up into the .Net layer. I'm trying to decide if the pain of invoking the database via .Net callbacks is offset by the improvements in ADO.Net. The Wikipedia comparison was interesting although I'm not sure I believe all the points in the comparison table (eg: does ADO.Net always use XML to pass data?). A 2005 comparison shows ADO.Net performing dramatically faster. Microsoft's guide to ADO.Net for ADO programmers suggests we will gain much from going to ADO.Net especially the way that data is available in native (.Net) types rather than solely through OLEAutomation's Variant.

Similar to this string[,] array = new string[,] { {"a", "b"}, {"c", "d"}, {"e", "f"}, {"g", "h"} } Doing List<string[]> list = new List<string[]>(); list.Add(new string[2] {"a", "b"}); list.Add(new string[2] {"c", "d"}); list.Add(new string[2] {"e", "f"}); list.Add(new string[2] {"g", "h"}); list.ToArray(); gives me string[][] but not string[,] array. Just curious, is there some trick to build dynamically string[,] array somehow?

• Removing Duplicates in an array in C

  The question is a little complex. The problem here is to get rid of duplicates and save the unique elements of array into another array with their original sequence. For example : If the input is entered b a c a d t The result should be : b a c d t in the exact state that the input entered. So, for sorting the array then checking couldn't work since I lost the original sequence. I was advised to use array of indices but I don't know how to do. So what is your advise to do that?

We are cautioned about not testing the framework, or the database. Good UI design does not lend itself to non-human testing. UI interaction in general is excluded in MVC frameworks. In many apps what is left?. 37signals talks about extensive unit testing, but in an app like Basecamp or Backpack, what exactly are the types of things being tested through appropriate unit tests? What would 100% code coverage mean in that scenario?

  I have a C++ client/server application where the client and server are my executable. Each time a connection is made between the client and server, I generate a new encryption key for that session and I wish to transmit this session key and encrypt this session key using a static key that is built into both the client and server. However, running strings on my executable reveals the static key. How can I hide the embedded static key in my client and server application so that they are not easily extracted and thus allowing someone to decode my session key.

  I've written an application in C++ that takes a complex binary file format and translates it into human-readable text. Having edited the text you can recompile it back into the binary file format. This would be more useful if the application's internal object model was scriptable. On Windows I'd expose the objects using COM or .Net but I want this to work on Linux. I could embed a scripting language but that's a fair bit of work, and limits users to the scripting language I choose. Ideally, I'm looking for some way of exposing a scriptable DOM from my application that is: Widely support in scripting languages (without writing language-specific wrappers) Cross-platform (but Linux support is most important) In-process (but this isn't essential)

• Simple Serialization Faster Than JSON? (in Ruby)

  I have an application written in ruby (that runs in the JRuby VM). When profiling it, I realized that it spends a lot (actually almost all of) its time converting some hashes into JSON. These hashes have keys of symbols, values of other similar hashes, arrays, strings, and numbers. Is there a serialization method that is suitable for such an input, and would typically run faster than JSON? It would preferable if it is has a Java or JRuby-compatible gem, too. I am currently using the jruby-json gem, which is the fastest JSON implementation in JRuby (as I am told), so the move will most likely be to a different serialization method rather than just a different library.   I want to remove all special characters from a string. Allowed characters are A-Z (uppercase or lowercase), numbers (0-9), underscore (_), or the dot sign (.).   I am trying to implement WordPress into quite a large site with a complex page structure and struggling to get normal pages to work (not created through the admin) The pages are created, but when I link to them, nothing happens... The desired url - www.website.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/page.php The actual url- www.website.com/wp-content/themes/themename/dir1/dir2/dir3/page.php The problem with linking to the latter is that it breaks the WordPress functions I don't want to have to give every page a template, then add it through the admin, it is too much work. I only need 2 pages to contain dynamic content. Am I being silly? I am really confused.

• Passing an object as a parameter to a windows service

  Is there some way to pass an object to a windows service? I know the method myServiceController.Star(string[] arg) but i need to pass a more complex object than a string array. Actually, i don't need the object to be passed as a parameter, what i really needs is that the service can use an object created in a windows forms application. I've tried using System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer.Serialize method to convert the object into a Json but i couldn't because the object contains a circular reference. I also tried using pointers, but i couldn't becouse it is a managed type object. Any idea what can i do?

• Do you know of a good program for editing/translating resource (.rc) files?

  I'm building a C++/MFC program in a multilingual environment. I have one main (national) language and three international languages. Every time I add a feature to the program I have to keep the international languages up-to-date with the national one. The resource editor in Visual Studio is not very helpful because I frequently end up leaving a string, dialog box, etc., untranslated. I wonder if you guys know of a program that can edit resource (.rc) files and Build a file that includes only the strings to be translated and their respective IDs and accepts the same (or similar) file in another language (this would be helpful since usually the translation is done by someone else), or Handle the translations itself, allowing to view the same string in different languages at the same time.

• Stealing the contents of another application's tree view

  I have an application with a very large TreeView control in Java. I want to get the contents of the tree control in a list (just strings not a JList) of XPath-like elements of leaves only. Here's an example root |-Item1 |-Item1.1 |-Item1.1.1 (leaf) |-Item1.2 (leaf) |-Item2 |-Item2.1 (leaf) Would output: /Item1/Item1.1/Item1.1.1 /Item1/Item1.2 /Item2/Item2.1 I don't have any source code or anything handy like that. Is there I tool I can use to dig into the Window item itself and pull out this data? I don't mind if there are a few post-processing steps because typing it in by hand is my only other option.

  Hi all, for a data warehouse project I need to know about some best practices regarding custom report viewer filters/parameters. Usually I use the standard parameter feature for reports, like multiple select boxes, check boxes, text boxes etc.. But for the current project some reports require more complex report parameters. E.g. a user wants to analyze some measures. For that the user needs to set a filter on a specific address. There are over 100.000 address to choose from, so he has to have the ability to search for an address (full text). Since such features cannot be done with the standard parameters, I will have to create custom params within a ASPX page which are then passed to the report viewer control. So my question is: Are there any best practices on how to create custom parameters? Did anyone had similar problems, if so, how did you solve it?

• Sql Server XML-type column duplicate entry detection

  In Sql Server I am using an XML type column to store a message. I do not want to store duplicate messages. I only will have a few messages per user. I am currently querying the table for these messages, converting the XML to string in my C# code. I then compare the strings with what I am about to insert. Unfortunately, Sql Server pretty-prints the data in the XML typed fields. What you store into the database is not necessarily exactly the same string as what you get back out later. It is functionally equivalent, but may have white space removed, etc. Is there an efficient way to compare an XML string that I am considering inserting with those that are already in the database? As an aside, if I detect a duplicate I need to delete the older message then insert the replacement.

Example #typedef string* pstring; const pstring parr; Here confusion arises whether const'ness is for pointer or the content. Now based on what thumb rule do can we start resolving the above interpretation of the pstring?.   I will start a new C++ project (it may have some C components as well) soon and I am looking for a modern, industrial-strength (i.e. non-beta) build system. The software will be created by several developers in 3-5 years and will run on Linux (Mac OS X and Windows might be supported later). I am looking for something that has better comprehensibility, ease-of-use and maintainability than e.g. make but is still powerful enough to handle a complex project. Open source software is preferred. I started looking into Boost.Build, CMake, Maven and SCons so far and liked features and concepts of all of those, but I'm lacking the experience to make a decision for a large project.

• Query filter design for string field

  A field in my table can have arbitrary strings. On the UI, there is a drop down having options like All, Value1, Value2 And the results were filtered by the selected option value. So far this is easy and adding new filters to the UI is not a problem. Needs no changes in my stored procedure. Now I want to have an "Others" option here as well, which will return rows not having the column value as Value1 or Value2. Apparently this will require a "not in" operator in my query, and will make maintenance difficult, as the list of values is likely to change Any suggestions, design tips?

• Is there a good collection library for C-language?

  We have to maintain and even develop C-code of our legacy system. Is there good collection library that would support Java/C# (new versions) style collections. Hashtable, HashSet, etc. Of course without objects, but with structs. The HashTable key limitations to "strings" and ints is not a problem. It wouldn't be bad if it's free even for commercial use. I'm back to C from C# and I must say i'm depressed using our own libraries and the language in general. We're using VS2005 and MS C-compiler if that has nothing to do with anything. • Implementing a "flag as spam/offensive" system

  I am looking for a community moderated way of managing/eliminating spam and offensive content. Functionality similar to StackOverflow and many other sites seems like a good way to go. Although I'm sure this could greatly vary based on specific needs, I am curious about the backend mechanism/algorithm --that is, has anyone had success using something like "3 strikes and you're out" -- the flagged post is automatically closed/deleted after 3 reports by users with the required credentials. Would something like this likely be effective or would it require a more complex solution to ensure honesty and effectiveness. Any thoughts / experiences would be great
