  • My Rails app is returning HTTP 500 for all its URLs, but nothing shows up in the log file. How can I

    I have a Rails app that is running on a production server with Apache and Phusion Passenger. The app works fine locally when using Mongrel, but whenever I try to load a URL on the production server, it returns HTTP 500. I know the server is working properly, because I can get the static elements of the application (e.g., JavaScript files, stylesheets, images) just fine. I've also checked the Passenger status and it is loading the app (it must be, since the app's 500 Internal Server Error page is returned, not just the default Apache one). Also, when I load the app via script/console production and do something like app.get("/"), 500 is also returned. The problem is that there is nothing in the log files to indicate the problem. production.log is empty. The Apache error logs show no problems with Apache, either. I'm stumped as to what's going on and I'm not sure how to diagnose the problem. I know I may have been a bit vague, but can anyone give a suggestion on what the problem may be? Or at least a way I can go about diagnosing it?

    Hi, I'm a Delphi developer on the Windows platform, recently read the PHP tutorial at W3CSchools, it looks interesting. We all know scripting languages are very good at web site development, but I also want to utilize it to improve my productivity or get some tedious tasks done quickly, maybe some quick-and-dirty string/file processing? How do you usually do with scripting languages apart from software development? And we need a responsive, decent IDE/editor in order to gain productivity when writing scripts for this purpose? However, I need to ensure a couple other things happen. @ab.auction.bid_count needs to be incremented by one. @ab.user.bid_count needs to be incremented by one @ab.auction.current_winner_id needs to be set to @ab.user_id That is, the User and the Auction associated with the AuctionBid need values updated as well in order for the AuctionBid#save to return true.

  • How do I change JAVASCRIPT_DEFAULT_SOURCES for my application?

    When you call javascript_include_tag :defaults you usually get: prototype.js, effects.js, dragdrop.js, and controls.js. These are stored in a constant in ActionView::Helpers::AssetTagHelper called 'JAVASCRIPT_DEFAULT_SOURCES`. My application uses jQuery, so I want to replace the Prototype references with something more useful. I added an initializer with these lines, based on the source code from jRails: ActionView::Helpers::AssetTagHelper::JAVASCRIPT_DEFAULT_SOURCES = %w{ jquery-1.4.min jquery-ui jquery.cookie } ActionView::Helpers::AssetTagHelper::reset_javascript_include_default But when I do this, I get: warning: already initialized constant JAVASCRIPT_DEFAULT_SOURCES during startup. What's the correct way of changing this value? In the source code it checks for the constant before setting it, but apparently that happens before it runs the initializer scripts. The Rails 3.0 release will provide much greater flexibility with choice of JS libraries, so I guess this is a problem with an expiration date.

  • Limit a user to view only associated records in rails

    I have an application with three Models (Profile - SubModel - SubSubModel) chained together with has many relationships. I am trying to limit a user, after logging in, to only retrieving records that are associated with their Profile. I am very new to rails and this is what I had been trying in the Profile model has_many :submodels, :conditions => {:profile_id => self.id} but this is returning an empty data set when calling with Profile.find_by_id(1).submodels, how else could I achieve what I am trying to do. Or should I handle this in the controller or view instead, I thought it sounded well suited for the model to handle this.

  • SQL housekeeping tasks on Herkoku

    Hi, I'm not sure how to do this... I have a database which contains a messages and categories tables. The categories table has a field which has a count of the number of messages related to it. Sometimes however I need to deactivate (active = 0) a message, at the moment this doesn't then update the category table... I will implement this is in the end but for the time I would just like to run a script perhaps daily that goes through all the categories, counts up the messages and updates the field.     Hi there! I'd like to i18n a text that looks like this: Already signed up? Log in! Note that there is a link on the text. On this example it points to google - in reality it will point to my app's log_in_path. I've found two ways of doing this, but none of them looks "right". The first way I know involves having this my en.yml: log_in_message: "Already signed up? <a href='{{url}}'>Log in!</a>" And in my view: <p> <%= t('log_in_message', :url => login_path) %> </p> This works, but having the <a href=...</a> part on the en.yml doesn't look very clean to me. The other option I know is using localized views - login.en.html.erb, and login.es.html.erb. This also doesn't feel right since the only different line would be the aforementioned one; the rest of the view (~30 lines) would be repeated for all views. It would not be very DRY. I guess I could use "localized partials" but that seems too cumberstone; I think I prefer the first option to having so many tiny view files. So my question is: is there a "proper" way to implement this?

  • Should I stop redirecting after successful POST or PUT requests?

    It seems common in the Rails community, at least, to respond to successful POST, PUT or DELETE requests by redirecting instead of returning success. For instance, if I PUT a legal change to my user profile, the idiomatic response would be a 302 Redirect to the profile page. Isn't this wrong? Shouldn't we be returning 200 OK from the request? Or a 201 Created, in the case of a POST request? Either of those, in the HTTP/1.1 Status Definitions are allowed to (or required to) include a response, anyway. I guess I'm wondering, before I go and "fix" my application, whether there is there a darn good reason why the community has gone the way of redirects instead of successful responses.

  • Why did mislav-will_paginate start adding so much garbage to urls between rails 2.3.2 and 2.3.5?

    I've used will_paginate in a number of projects now, but when I moved one of them to Rails 2.3.5, clicking on any of the pagination links (page number, next, prev, etc.,) went from getting nice URLs like this: http://foo.com/user/1/date/2005_01_31/phone/555-6161 to this: http://foo.com/?options[]=user&options[]=date&options[]=2005_01_31&options[]=phone&options[]=555-6161 I have a route that looks like this that is probably the source of the 'options' keyword: map.connect '/browse/*options', :controller=>'assets', :action=>'browse' It's enough of an annoyance that I'm willing to roll a paginator to get around this if there isn't a way to get back to where I was before. Is there a way to get will_paginate to turn array-style routes into sane urls again? Thanks.

    Hello I have a rails application where I have to subtract 2 time stamps and display the result on the webpage I have used the following sql statement and I am getting the results. select (julianday(resolutions.created_at)-julianday(tickets.created_at))*24 from tickets,resolutions the value of tickets.created_at is 2010-04-05 18:59:02 which is a time stamp and value of resolutions.created_at is 2010-04-08 08:10:33 Now where do I put this sql so that I can be seen in my webpage. I tired it in the views page with the following but nothing showed up: <% @sql = "select (julianday(resolutions.created_at)-julianday(tickets.created_at))*24 from tickets,resolutions" %> <% @t=(ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute(@sql)) %> So how do I display it on my webpage? when I perform the above I get the output printed on the webpage as 061.1919444389641(julianday(resolutions.created_at)-julianday(tickets.created_at))*2461.1919444389641 only 61.1919444389641 is supposed to be printed but the query statement is also getting printed.

  • Git push won't do anything (Everything up-to-date)

    I'm trying to update a git repository on github. I made a bunch of changes, added them, committed then attempted to do a git push. The response tells me that everything is up to date, but clearly it's not. git remote show origin responds with the repository I'd expect. Why is git telling me the repository is up to date when there are local commits that aren't visible on the repository?   • How do I add the Disqus comment system to a Rails application in a similar fashion to Wordpress?

    In Wordpress, the Disqus plugin allows you to choose to subscribe to a post via RSS or via email. Is there a pluign similar to the Wordpress plugin for Rails. Norman's Disqus plugin just uses the Disqus site to make it work. I was hoping to have things more stored locally. For an example of what I mean, take a look at this blog entry. I already know that since Rails (this application in particular) is using Authlogic (plus Facebook Connect), that Disqus cannot be too tightly coupled with the Authentication system. Has anyone ever done this or figured out a way to do this?

  • Good way to handle inline-edit form using Rails and jQuery

    I have a list of items, being displayed in a series of DIVs. When someone clicks on an "edit" link, I want to replace the div with a form that will let them edit the contents of that item in a nice way. I'm trying to think of the ideal way to handle this. Do I create a hidden edit form for every item in the list, and hook the edit link to reveal it, like this: <div> <a href="#">edit</a> Item One <div id="edit_1202" class="editform">Edit form goes here</div> </div> <div> <a href="#">edit</a> Item Two <div id="edit_2318" class="editform">Edit form goes here</div> </div> Or is there a better way to fetch the data and insert the form's HTML into the right spot? Remember, I'm using jQuery, so I can't use the prototype helpers. Thanks!

  • Unable to reverse seemingly simple rails migration - getting "altered_table.column may not be NULL"

    I have a table 'invoices' in my development database (sqlite3) populated with a small amount of test data. I wanted to add a column 'invoice_number' to it and set up a migration like so: class AddInvoiceNumberColumnToInvoices < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up add_column :invoices, :invoice_number, :integer end def self.down remove_column :invoices, :invoice_number end end I ran rake db:migrate and it seemed to migrate just fine. However, when I tried to access this column through ActiveRecord it didn't seem to be there. I decided to undo this migration and try again (not sure what I was going to try but I thought I'd start by undoing it) with rake db:migrate VERSION='whatever_the_migration_before_this_one_was_called'. This failed with the error message == AddInvoiceNumberColumnToInvoices: reverting =============================== -- remove_column(:invoices, :invoice_number) rake aborted! An error has occurred, this and all later migrations canceled: altered_invoices.invoice_number may not be NULL I can't find any documentation of this error. Is anyone able to explain what I have done wrong, and more importantly how I can fix this?

  • Is it possible to do AJAX calls in a liquid template?

    I'm looking at the liquid templating language for Rails apps: http://wiki.github.com/tobi/liquid/ I'd like my users to also be able to make AJAX calls (just like the ones in rails for periodically_call_remote, observe_field, etc). Is this possible? Assuming the rails helpers can be added as filters, how will the user be able to modify what gets returned by the AJAX call? They cannot modify an rjs file on the server or anything like that. I suppose the AJAX call could return JSON (instead of rendered html) and then the javascript could use that to render something. But I'm having a little trouble envisioning how it would work exactly. If anyone can point me to an example of this or clarify it'd be much appreciated. Thanks!

    I would like to do something like this config.default_host = 'www.subdomain.example.com' in some of my configuration files, so that object_url helpers produce link beginning with http://www.subdomain.example.com I have tried to search the docs but I did not find anytnig exept ActionMailer docs and http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/Rails/Configuration.html which is not usefull for me, because I do not know in which pat to look.   • Weird Facebooker Plugin & Pushion Passenger ModRails Production Error

    I have an application (Rails 2.3.5) that I'm deploying to production Linux/Apache server using the latest Phushion Passenger/Apache Module 2.2.11 version. After deploying my original application, it returns a 500 error with no logging to production log. So I created a minimal test rails application, with some active record calls to the database to print out a list of objects to the home controller/my index page. I also cleared out all plugins. That works fine in the production environment. Then I one by one introduced each plugin that I'm using one at a time. Every plugin works fine EXCEPT facebooker. Every time I load the facebooker plugin into my app/vendor/plugins directory (via script git etc) my test application break (500 error - no error logging). Everytime I remove the facebooker plugin my test application works. Has anyone seen this before/ have any solutions? I saw this solution but didn't see it in the facebooker code.
