  Ok, i have a simple database engine (its a proprietary product written in vb6) for one of my applications... i'd like to create an ODBC driver for it so i can use some of my other applications (which require a database) with my database engine rather than microsoft sql (which they are currently using).... Does anyone have any heads up on how to develop an ODBC driver (preferably in vb6) ... i'v spent the last few hours googling it and havnt had much luck... about the best thing i have found so far is: http://www.datadirect.com/products/openaccess/index.ssp but i dont exactly want to go buying an SDK to write an ODBC driver...   I have a voice application that would be much-improved if there was the ability to use a "trigger word" to start recording audio. I don't need a full speech-text engine, just the ability to reliably/efficiently detect the trigger word. I am wondering if there are any specialized speech engines that support this specific use case, or any libraries/methods to developing such a single-purpose detection engine. Ideally I'd like it to work in noisy environments, but it can be trained for a single user's voice. Pointers to research papers / topics would also be appreciated so I know what to ask for.

  I am programming a simple 2d game engine. I've decided how I'd like the engine to function: it will be composed of objects containing "events" that my main game loop will trigger when appropriate. A little more about the structure: Every GameObject has an updateEvent method. objectList is a list of all the objects that will receive update events. Only objects on this list have their updateEvent method called by the game loop. I’m trying to implement this method in the GameObject class (This specification is what I’d like the method to achieve): /** * This method removes a GameObject from objectList. The GameObject * should immediately stop executing code, that is, absolutely no more * code inside update events will be executed for the removed game object. * If necessary, control should transfer to the game loop. * @param go The GameObject to be removed */ public void remove(GameObject go) So if an object tries to remove itself inside of an update event, control should transfer back to the game engine: public void updateEvent() { //object's update event remove(this); System.out.println("Should never reach here!"); } Here’s what I have so far. It works, but the more I read about using exceptions for flow control the less I like it, so I want to see if there are alternatives. For the removal from the list itself, it is possible for one object to remove one that is farther down on the list. Currently I’m checking a removed flag before executing any code, and at the end of each pass removing the objects to avoid concurrent modification. Is there a better, preferably instant/non-polling way to do this?

• Need MYSQL query for finding lowest score per game player

  I have a game on Facebook called Rails Across Europe. I have a Best Scores page where I show the players with the best 20 scores, which in game terms refers to the lowest winning turn. The problem is that there are a small number of players who play frequently, and their scores dominate the page. I'd like to make the scores page open to more players. So I thought that I could display the single lowest winning turn for each player instead of displaying all of the lowest winning turns for all players. The problem is that the query for this eludes me. So I hope that one of you brilliant StackOverflow folks can help me with this. I have included the relevant MYSQL table schemas below. Here are the the table relationships: player_stats contains statistics for either a game in progress or a completed game. If a game is in progress, winning_turn is zero (which means that games with a winning_turn of zero should not be included in the query). player_stats has a game_player table id reference. game_player contains data describing games currently in progress. game_player has a player table id reference. player contains data describing a person who plays the game. • SQL Database dilemma : Optimize for Querying or Writing?

  I'm working on a personal project (Search engine) and have a bit of a dilemma. At the moment it is optimized for writing data to the search index and significantly slow for search queries. The DTA (Database Engine Tuning Adviser) recommends adding a couple of Indexed views inorder to speed up search queries. But this is to the detriment of writing new data to the DB. It seems I can't have one without the other! This is obviously not a new problem. What is a good strategy for this issue?

  To give a scenario, let us simply assume an engine that loads plug-ins and exposes features in the plug-in. User 1 uploads a plug-in which allows implements Act 1 User 2 uploads a plug-in which allows implements Act 2 A plug-in in this case is .net assembly. Now in this scenario, if we have to store all the assemblies - what would be the best place? Also, the plug-in would require to be versioned so execution can happen of a particular version. Further considering the plug-in engine is installed on multiple machines or on same machine as different instances (similar to sql server). Would a centralized database (sql server 2005) with a table to store all the assembly be a good idea (centralized backup etc.,) (assembly size would be around 500kb to 1MB)

  Hello, I need some help with a MySQL query. I have two tables, one with offers and one with statuses. An offer can has one or more statuses. What I would like to do is get all the offers and their latest status. For each status there's a table field named 'added' which can be used for sorting. I know this can be easily done with two queries, but I need to make it with only one because I also have to apply some filters later in the project.   I have two related tables: Groups and Clients. Clients belongs to Groups so I have a foreign key "group_id" that references the group a client belongs to. I'm changing the Group id from an autoincrement to a UUID. So what I need is to generate a UUID for each Group and update the Clients table at once to reflect the changes and keep the records related. Is there a way to do this with multiple-table update on MySQL? Adding tables definitions for clarification. • MySQL Full-text Search Workaround for innoDB tables

  I'm designing an internal web application that uses MySQL as its backend database. The integrity of the data is crucial, so I am using the innoDB engine for its foreign key constraint features. I want to do a full-text search of one type of records, and that is not supported natively with innoDB tables. I'm not willing to move to MyISAM tables due to their lack of foreign key support and due to the fact that their locking is per table, not per row. Would it be bad practice to create a mirrored table of the records I need to search using the MyISAM engine and use that for the full-text search? This way I'm just searching a copy of the data and if anything happens to that data it's not as big of a deal because it can always be re-created. Or is this an awkward way of doing this that should be avoided? Thanks.

I understand this is a big ask, it would need to match all of these rows together in every combination possible, so it needs the best optimization.   I use the following query: select * from A LEFT JOIN B on ( A.t_id != B.t_id) to get all the records in A that are not in B. The results are fine except when table B is completely empty, but then I do not get any records, even from table A. Later It wont work yet!   I have a search engine that searches albums. For each music album, I have a page. So, the work flow goes like this: People search for music titles The search engine displays a list of albums. People click on an album to go to a details page. I want google to index my front page and the details page. I want the details page to be highly ranked. How can I build a sitemap for this? By the way, I have about 5 million albums (but I want the top 1000 ones to be highly ranked on google)

  Kindly help. Am a beginner in C#. The details of my project work include: Front End: C# Back End: SQL MS Visual Studio 2010 Windows Application Quiz Module Each session contains 20 questions. At the end of the test, the test-engine will evaluate the answers. If the student obtains more than 50% then he can unlock the next module. And his test score is printed using Crystal Reports and saved in teacher's database, against that student's record. Else, if his score is less than 50%, the test-engine will count the no. of attempts to clear the quiz & randomly generate another set of 20 questions from a file (from the teacher's database). It's complicated for me cause am a beginner. Would appreciate some help. Thanks.

• Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do. • Best option for storage clustering

  I'm working on an application that requires a large amount of storage space and I want to handle storage 'in-house' (Much cheaper than, say, S3) so we will have multiple servers (Initially 4) with large amounts of storage (6TB each). The storage will need to be very flexible and configurable, each piece of data should be replicated on at least 2 servers and must be easily readable/writable from ether an API of a UNIX device/file/folder like a normal drive, I don't mind which. We must also be able to easily offload content to our HTTP CDN (Edgecast), it doesn't need to have built in HTTP support but if it doesn't I'm going to have to write something to get the files onto HTTP so they can be pulled by the CDN. I've looked at a lot of solutions including Eucalyptus Walrus OpenStack Object Storage MogileFS and some others which I can't remember All the servers will be running RHEL 6, they have 4x1.5TB drives which will be RAID1'd into a single partition. All the servers have 1GB/s connections between them and 100MB/s connections to the internet with unlimited bandwidth. They have 2x2.66ghz processors. I understand there isn't a single, perfect answer but it would be nice to get some pointers.

  Hi, Complete linux novice here! :) I'm trying to get my brilliant DS209 NAS box to do some transcoding for me of a few AVI videos to a format suitable for my Apply iTouch - yes I could do it with another machine and Handbrake but it would be really useful to offload some of this to the NAS to do overnight. I've managed to install ipkg onto my DS209 NAS box and have played around with installing some packages (binutils, mono, bash etc). I've even managed to install ffmpeg from ipkg and put together the correct command line profile to do the encoding as a .sh file: time ffmpeg -y -i $1 -f mp4 -title $2 -vcodec libx264 -level 21 -s 426×320 -b 512k -bt 512k -bufsize 4M -maxrate 4M -g 250 -coder 0 -threads 0 -acodec libfaac -ac 2 -ab 64k $3 However running this I get a missing dependency on libx264. I've tried building this from the latest source in git, but I get errors during the make process that I just don't understand (way out of my depth). encoder/set.c: In function 'x264_sei_version_write': encoder/set.c:491: error: 'X264_VERSION' undeclared (first use in this function) encoder/set.c:491: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once encoder/set.c:491: error: for each function it appears in.) make: *** [encoder/set.o] Error 1 Can anyone else try building it or give me a pointer as to what I can do to get this going? • Router recommendation to virtualize 800 IPs

  I've recently been looking at getting some new load balancers for our environment as we are expecting to double our client base in the next 12 months. Currently we have 400 public IPS serving 800 clusters ( 2 clusters / IP due to ports ) on Coyote Point Balancers, and distributing connections to 3 web servers serving about 6GBytes outgoing, 2Gbytes in per day. If we double, this would be about 800 IPs, possibly 1600 clusters, and about 6 servers per cluster ( for a total of 9600 so called "real servers" using Barracuda's lingo ). Due to the amount of clusters, most solutions I've looked at ( Coyote, Barracuda, Loadbalancer.org ) seem to be unsure whether they'll be able to handle our planned growth, mostly due to health checks performed on the servers ... which makes total sense when you think of it. So the fine folk at loadbalancer.org recommended that we may be better off offload the 400-800 public IPs, which we require for SSL eCommerce solutions, over to a forward facing router. From that point on, the router could do some mangling to route EXT_IP:443 to INT_IP:INT_PORT which would then allow us to reduce the Load Balancer configuration to 1 or 2 clusters, thus resolving the health check problem. Does this idea make sense to yall ? Or would you have other recommendations to make ? Secondly, what router would you recommend for such an undertaking ? I'd be looking at something that has some form of failover mechanism built in. On a totally unrelated note, I've got to admit that I'm extremely pleased with the responses I got from loadbalancer.org. Their responses to my inquiries were surprisingly helpful ( i.e. I didn't feel as if I was taking to a sales guy trying to push something ). ( No I don't work for them, and sadly nor are they sending me free gear ).
