  • Reasons NOT to use JSF [closed]

    I am new to StackExchange, but I figured you would be able to help me. We're crating a new Java Enterprise application, replacing an legacy JSP solution. Due to many many changes, the UI and parts of the business logic will completely be rethought and reimplemented. Our first thought was JSF, as it is the standard in Java EE. At first I had a good impression. But now I am trying to implement a functional prototype, and have some really serious concerns about using it. First of all, it creates the worst, most cluttered invalid pseudo-HTML/CSS/JS mix I've ever seen. It violates every single rule I learned in web-development. Furthermore it throws together, what never should be so tightly coupled: Layout, Design, Logic and Communication with the server. I don't see how I would be able to extend this output comfortably, whether styling with CSS, adding UI candy (like configurable hot-keys, drag-and-drop widgets) or whatever. Secondly, it is way too complicated. Its complexity is outstanding. If you ask me, it's a poor abstraction of basic web technologies, crippled and useless in the end. What benefits do I have? None, if you think about. Hundreds of components? I see ten-thousands of HTML/CSS snippets, ten-thousands of JavaScript snippets and thousands of jQuery plug-ins in addition. It solves really many problems - we wouldn't have if we wouldn't use JSF. Or the front-controller pattern at all. And Lastly, I think we will have to start over in, say 2 years. I don't see how I can implement all of our first GUI mock-up (Besides; we have no JSF Expert in our team). Maybe we could hack it together somehow. And then there will be more. I'm sure we could hack our hack. But at some point, we'll be stuck. Due to everything above the service tier is in control of JSF. And we will have to start over. My suggestion would be to implement a REST api, using JAX-RS. Then create a HTML5/Javascript client with client side MVC. (or some flavor of MVC..) By the way; we will need the REST api anyway, as we are developing a partial Android front-end, too. I doubt, that JSF is the best solution nowadays. As the Internet is evolving, I really don't see why we should use this 'rake'. Now, what are pros/cons? How can I emphasize my point to not use JSF? What are strong points to use JSF over my suggestion?

  • Android daemon process

    Is it possible (without violating any licenses) to write a native C/C++ application on top of the Android OS and make it run as a daemon process? There are already several daemon process' running which one can see with the 'ps' command, the legal part concerns me the most. And also the lack of documentation on how to exactly do this. For the writing part, I guess one could use basic Linux programming concepts, since Android supports at least to some level the standard Posix API. To make it run as the phone boots, some modifications is of course required in init as well. I have no plans to have this app in the Android Market, so installing it manually to the phone is not a problem. As long as it does not require re-compiling the whole OS or kernel. I really appreciate all info on this topic, since there's isn't much available. Thanks.

  • Resulting .exe from PyInstaller with wxPython crashing

    I'm trying to compile a very simple wxPython script into an executable by using PyInstaller on Windows Vista. The Python script is nothing but a Hello World in wxPython. I'm trying to get that up and running as a Windows executable before I add any of the features that the program needs to have. But I'm already stuck. I've jumped through some loops in regards to MSVCR90.DLL, MSVCP90.DLL and MSVCPM90.DLL, which I ended up copying from my Visual Studio installation (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\x86\Microsoft.VC90.CRT). As according to the instructions for PyInstaller, I run: Command: Configure.py Output: I: computing EXE_dependencies I: Finding TCL/TK... I: could not find TCL/TK I: testing for Zlib... I: ...     Is there any POSIX signals that I could utilize in my perl program to create event-driven programming? Currently I have multi-process program that is able to cross communicate but my parent thread is only able to listen to listen at one child at a time. foreach (@threads) { sysread(${$_}{'read'}, my $line, 100); chomp($line); print "Parent hears: $line\n"; } The problem is that the parent sits in a continual wait state until it receives it a signal from the first child before it can continue on. I am relying on 'pipe' for my intercommunication.     I'd like to try writing my own minimal NT subsystem on Windows 7 for purely educational purposes -- something like a bare-bones equivalent of the posix.exe in Microsoft's Subsystem for Unix-based Applications. But I can't seem to find any public documentation on this topic. What API does a subsystem need to implement? How does it get registered with Windows? How does the subsystem image need to be built (what flags need to be set in the PE header, etc.)? I'd most like to find a book or web site with an overview of the entire subject, or even the source code for a "hello world" NT subsystem that someone else has written. But anything at all would be appreciated if you can point me in the right direction here...

  • In linux, is there a way to set a default permission for newly created files and directories under a

    I have a bunch of long-running scripts and applications that are storing output results in a directory shared amongst a few users. I would like a way to make sure that every file and directory created under this shared directory automatically had u=rwxg=rwxo=r permissions. I know that I could use umask 006 at the head off my various scripts, but I don't like that approach as many users write their own scripts and may forget to set the umask themselves. I really just want the filesystem to set newly created files and directories with a certain permission if it is in a certain folder. Is this at all possible? Update: I think it can be done with POSIX ACLs, using the Default ACL functionality, but it's all a bit over my head at the moment. If anybody can explain how to use Default ACLs it would probably answer this question nicely.

    I'm trying to capture artwork from a pict file and embed into a track on iTunes using python appscript. I did something like this: imFile = open('/Users/kartikaiyer/temp.pict','r') data = imFile.read() it = app('iTunes') sel = it.current_track.get() sel.artworks[0].data_.set(data[513:]) I get an error OSERROR: -1731 MESSAGE: Unknown object Similar applescript code looks like this: tell application "iTunes" set the_artwork to read (POSIX file "/Users/kartikaiyer/temp.pict") from 513 as picture set data of artwork 1 of current track to the_artwork end tell I tried using ASTranslate but it never instantiates 'the_artwork' and then throws an error when there is a reference to the_artwork. Can anyone help. I'm new to appscript and python in general.

  • strerror_r returns trash when I manually set errno during testing

    During testing I have a mock object which sets errno = ETIMEDOUT; The object I'm testing sees the error and calls strerror_r to get back an error string: if (ret) { if (ret == EAI_SYSTEM) { char err[128]; strerror_r(errno, err, 128); err_string.assign(err); } else { err_string.assign(gai_strerror(ret)); } return ret; } I don't understand why strerror_r is returning trash. I even tried calling strerror_r(ETIMEDOUT, err, 128) directly and still got trash. I must be missing something. It seems I'm getting the gnu version of the function not the posix one, but that shouldn't make any difference in this case.

  • Win32 select/poll/eof/ANYTHING!?!?!

    Using the standard Win32 file I/O API's (CreateFile/ReadFile/etc), I'm trying to wait for a file to become readable, or for an exception to occur on the file. If Windows had any decent POSIX support, I could just do: select(file_count, files_waiting_for_read, NULL, files_waiting_for_excpt, NULL, NULL); And select will return when there's anything interesting on some of the files. Windows doesn't support select or poll. Fine. I figured I could take the file and do something like: while(eof(file_descriptor)) { Sleep(100); } The above loop would exit when more data is available to be read. But nope, Windows doesn't have an equivalent of eof() either! I could possibly call ReadFile() on the file, and determine if it's at the eof that way. But, then I'd have to handle the reading at that point in time -- I'm hoping to simply be able to figure out that a file is readable, without actually reading it. What are my options?

  • Is it safe to catch an access violation in this scenario?

    I've read a lot, including here on SO that suggests this is a very bad idea in general and that the only thing you can do safely is exit the program. I'm not sure that this is true. This is for a pooling memory allocator that hands off large allocations to malloc. During pool_free() a pointer needs to be checked it it belongs to a pool or was allocated with malloc. By rounding the address down to the nearest 1MB boundary, I get a pointer to the beginning of a block of memory in the pool, or undefined if malloc was used. In the first case I can easily verify that the block of memory belongs to the pool, but, if it does not I will either fail this verification, or I will get an access violation (note that this is a read-only process). Could I not catch this with SEH (Windows) or handle the signal (POSIX) and simply treat it as a failed verification? (i.e. this is only possible if malloc was used, so pass the ptr to free())

    So a FILE stream can have both input and output buffers. You can adjust the output stream using setvbuf (I am unaware of any method to play with the input buffer size and behavior). Also, by default the buffer is BUFSIZ (not sure if this is a POSIX or C thing). It is very clear what this means for stdin/stdout/stderr, but what are the defaults for newly opened files? Are they buffered for both input and output? Or perhaps just one? If it is buffered, does output default to block or line mode?

  • Could Grand Central Dispatch (`libdispatch`) ever be made available on Windows?

    I’m looking into multithreading, and GCD seems like a much better option than manually writing a solution using pthread.h and pthreads-win32. However, although it looks like libdispatch is either working on, or soon going to be working on, most newer POSIX-compatible systems… I have to ask, what about Windows?     I am trying to make a class initializable from an initialization_list in a class constructor's constructor's initialization list. It works for a std::map, but not for my custom class.   • Could Grand Central Dispatch (`libdispatch`) ever be available on Windows?

    I’m looking into multithreading, and GCD seems like a much better option than manually writing a solution using pthread.h and pthreads-win32. However, although it looks like libdispatch is either working on, or soon going to be working on, most newer POSIX-compatible systems… I have to ask, what about Windows? What are the chances of libdispatch being ported to Windows? What are the barriers preventing that from happening? If it came down to it, what would I need to do to preform that portage?
