• Using Asset Groups

  I got a question about putting assets in groups: "I'm planning on installing some agents manually on existing systems, and I want to have them put in a specific asset group once they're discovered. I don't see any way to tell the install script to put the asset in a group. How can I add the assets to a group, either through the UI or the CLI?" There are a few ways. In the CLI, you can use groups mode, and use this command to add an asset to a group: attach -n| --gear <asset name> -g| --group <group> You can also use -U| --uuid <UUID> to specify the asset if you have multiple assets with the same name. In the UI, you have a couple of options. You can select an asset and click Add Asset to Group to add it to a group you select. Alternatively, if you're trying to make a group for assets with a specific characteristic, you can specify rules that will automatically add assets to a group based on that characteristic.

• Transient VO : Powerful J2EE Design Pattern

  We had a use-case wherein, the communication has to happen between regions residing under differenet taskfows. Essentially, they had a common set of parameters to be used. Initially, we resorted to the  use of pageFlowScope variables, but they are tightly coupled with the individual task flows. So, how the communication has to happen..?Some of the alternatives that we brainstormed into are - 1.usage of adf contextual event - This is a powerful feature indeed for such use-cases, but there is a considerable cost involved with it. So, before resorting to it, you have to make sure that you have good enough reason to use it.It actually does a server roundtrip and also the issue of an event and listening part to it is also something which requires your attention !!2.Use a transientVO with shared data control scope - with shared data control scope, the transient VO rows would be persistent across the task flows in your application. All you have to do is to create the attributes in the transientVO(prefereably with the same names - for the ease of conversion) and create some utility methods in VOImpl for creating row, updating row and deleting a row. You also have to make sure that the vo row is initialized per http request( this you can do in a bookmark method of your index.jspx - residing in adfc-config.xml), else the ui fields binded to the transient vo attributes won't render in UI.Hope, this helps and this should be a common use-case across apps.

• Can't configure Bluetooth drivers for mac mini 4,1

  upon following the instructions on thread for mac mini leading to me to a thread for a fix for BlueTooth, i follow the instructions (even they are for other Mac's) i get it to fire up and combined with hcitool i managed to connect my apple track pad and keyboard... how ever upon reboot im back to bluetooth telling me there are no drivers nothing works, yet all the files are still there? • CQRS without using others patterns

  I would like to explain CQRS to my team of developers. I just can't figure out how to explain it in the simplest way so they can implement the pattern rapidly without any others frameworks. I've read a lot of resources including video and articles but I don't find how to implement CQRS without using others patterns like a service Bus, event sourcing pattern, domain driven design. I know the purpose of these pattern but for the first step, I don't want them to think CQRS and theses patterns must be tied together. My first idea is to say that CQRS is about separating the read part and the write part. The read part is composed only of the UI project, and DAL project. Then the write part is composed of a typical multilayer architecture: UI/BLL/DAL. Then, does CQRS say we must also have two datastore ? What about the notion of commands which reveal the user's intention, is it also something part of CQRS or DDD ? Basically, how to implement CQRS without using others patterns. I concede it's also not that clear in my mind because I've used to work with NCQRS/DDD/Event Sourcing/ServiceBus in my personal project. Thanks

  Im new to the game-dev world and I have a tendancy to over-simplify my code, and sometimes this costs me alot fo memory. Im using a custom TimerTask that looks like this: public class Task extends TimerTask { private MainGamePanel panel; public Task(MainGamePanel panel) { this.panel=panel; } /** * When the timer executes, this code is run. */ public void run() { panel.createEnemies(); } } this task calls this method from my view: public void createEnemies() { Bitmap bmp = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.female); if(enemyCounter < 24){ enemies.add(new Enemy(bmp, this)); } enemyCounter++; } Since I call this in the onCreate-method instead of in my views contructor (because My enemies need to get width and height of view). Im wondering if this will work when I have multiple levels in game (start a new intent). • Is shipping a Clojure desktop app realistic?

  I'm currently shipping a desktop Java application. It is a plain old Java 5 Java / Swing app and so far everything worked nicely. Java 5 was targetted because some users were on OS X version / computers that shall never have Java 6 (we may lift this limitation soon and switch to a newer Java and simply abandoning my users stuck with Java 5). I'm quickly getting up to speed with Clojure but I haven't really done lots of Clojure-to-Java and Java-to-Clojure yet and I was wondering if it was realistic to ship a Clojure desktop application instead of a Java application? The application I'm shipping is currently about 12 MB with all the .jar so adding Clojure doesn't seen to be too much of an issue. My plan would be to have Clojure call Java APIs: my application is already divided in several independent jars. If I understand correctly calling Clojure from Java is harder than calling Java code from Clojure which is why I'd basically rewrite all the UI (part of the UI, mixing Swing components and self-made BufferedImages needs to be rewritten anyway due to the rise of retina display), and do all the 'wiring' from Clojure. So that's the problem I'm facing: is it realistic to ship a Clojure desktop app? (it certainly doesn't seem to be very widespread but then shipping plain Java desktop apps ain't that common either and I'm doing it anyway) Technically, what would need to be done? (compared to shipping a Java app)

  Hello, I'm Sophia. I have an interest in self-learning either Python, or Ruby. The primary reason for my interest is to make my life more stable by having freelance work = $. It seems that programming offers a way for me to escape my condition of poverty (I'm on the edge of homelessness right now) while at the same time making it possible for me to go to uni. I intend on being a math/philosophy major. I have messed with Python a little bit in the past, but it didn't click super well. The people who say I should choose Python say as much because it is considered a good first language/teaching language, and that it is general-purpose. The people who say I should choose Ruby point out that I'm a very right-brained thinker, and having multiple ways to do something will make it much easier for me to write good code. So, basically, I'm starting this thread as a dialog with people who know more than I do, as an attempt to make the decision. :-) I've thought about asking this in stackoverflow, but they're much more strict about closing threads than here, and I'm sort of worried my thread will be closed. :/ TL;DR Python or Ruby for freelance work opportunities ($) as a first language? Additional question (if anyone cares to answer): I have a personal feeling that if I devote myself to learning, I'd be worth hiring for a project in about 8 weeks of work. I base this on a conservative estimate of my intellectual capacities, as well as possessing motivation to improve my life. Is my estimate necessarily inaccurate? random tidbit: I'm in Portland, OR I'll answer questions that are asked of me, if I can help the accuracy and insight contained within the dialog.

• Bluetooth headset A2DP works, HSP/HFP not (no sound/no mic)

  My Philips SBH9001 headset pairs fine using Ubuntu 12.04. In the audio settings it's properly detected as A2DP device and as HSP/HFP device. Hardware: Thinkpad X230, Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, Kernel 3.6.0-030600rc3-generic (build from Ubuntu mainline repo), Bluetooth device is USB-Id 0a5c:21e6 from Broadcom, Headset is a Philips SBH9001. Note: Kernel 3.6 rc3 is used because of a fix for audio on the dockingstation that is not in any previous branches. Playing audio in A2DP works just fine out of the box, but when switching the headset to HSP/HSP mode there is no sound nor does the microphone work. • Libgdx actor bounds are wrong

  The Actor's boundaries are not centered at the ButtonText but I used the setBounds() method. The higher the Y position is, the less centered is the boundary. The weird thing is that i only created and added to the Stage one button but the screen shows two. When i click the top button, the bottom one is the one highlighted.   One cool feature of the Windows Phone emulator is that it allows you to select pictures from your app (using the PhotoChooserTask) without having to try your app on a physical device.   Hello, I'm exploring some technologies and JSP with JSF 2.0 and Primefaces seems really cool. I'm new to all of these, but I'm a fast learner. I wondering if I can create the web app I want withh JSP/JSF/Primefaces or should I be looking to different technologies? If I should, which ones do you recommend? Here's a basic description of the app: Users log in with their username and password (maybe I can somehow incorporate google OPENID)? With a really nice UI, they will be presented a large list of questions specific to a certain category, for example, JSP. When they click on any of these questions, a little input opens up below it to allow the user to put in a link. If the link they enter has the same question on that webpage the URL points to, they will be awarded one point. This question then disappears and gets added to a different page that has a list of all correctly linked questions. On the right side of the screen, there will be a leaderboard with the usernames of the people with the top ten points. Is this possible with JSP/JSF/Primefaces, or should I be looking elsewhere for a different web technology? The idea is relatively simple - to be able to compile links to external websites for specific questions. I know I can build the UI easily with Primefaces. What I'm not sure is if JSP/JSF gives the ability to parse HTML at a certain URL to see if it contains words. I can do this with python easily by using urllib. Any help would be appreciated!!! What would be more helpful than a "Yes" or "No" answer would be links to where I can see sample code of external HTML parsing. Your input is truly appreciated! Thanks!

  Here's the problem I'm facing: Quote From Project Manager: Hey Sugar, I'm assigning you the task of developing a framework that could be used for many different iOS applications. Here are the requirements: It should be able to detect the thickness of the thumb or fingers being used to manipulate the UI. With this information, all elements of the UI should be arranged & sized automatically. For a larger thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the center of the screen. For a smaller thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the corners of the screen. For a larger thumb, all fonts should be smaller. (We're assuming an adult in this case.) For a smaller thumb, all fonts should be larger. (We're assuming a younger person in this case.) Summary: This framework is required for creating user-friendly user interfaces programmatically. The framework should be developed in such a way that we can use for as many projects as needed, so it must also be very developer-friendly. I am the developer given this task, so my questions are as follows: How can I explain that these requirements are a little ridiculous? How can I explain that it would be better to concentrate on developing actual projects? How can I explain that even if this were possible, I wouldn't recommended developing such a thing? How do I say NO to this project politely, gently, and respectfully? How can I explain that even for a developer with 3 years of experience, this might not be possible?

• Are there any "best practices" on cross-device development?

  Developing for smartphones in the way the industry is currently doing is relatively new. Of course, there has been enterprise-level mobile development for several decades. The platforms have changed, however. Think of: from stylus-input to touch-input (different screen res, different control layout etc.) new ways of handling multi-tasking on mobile platforms (e.g. WP7's "tombstoning") The way these platforms work aren't totally new (iPhone has been around for quite awhile now for example), but at the moment when developing a functionally equal application for both desktop and smartphone it comes down to developing two applications from ground up. Especially with the birth of Windows Phone with the .NET-platform on board and using Silverlight as UI-language, it's becoming appealing to promote the re-use of (parts of the UI). Still, it's fairly obvious that the needs of an application on a smartphone (or tablet) are very different compared to the needs of a desktop application. An (almost) one-on-one conversion will therefore be impossible. My question: are there "best practices", pitfalls etc. documented about developing "cross-device" applications (for example, developing an app for both the desktop and the smartphone/tablet)? I've been looking at weblogs, scientific papers and more for a week or so, but what I've found so far is only about "migratory interfaces".

• Building a Redundant / Distrubuted Application

  This is more of a "point me in the right direction" question. I (and my team of 3) have built a hosted web app that queues and routes customer chat requests to available customer service agents (It does other things as well, but this is enough background to illustrate the issue). The basic dev architecture today is: a single page ajax web UI (ASP.NET MVC) with floating chat windows (think Gmail) a backend Windows service to queue and route the chat requests this service also logs the chats, calculates service levels, etc a Comet server product that routes data between the web frontend and the backend Windows service this also helps us detect which Agents are still connected (online) And our hardware architecture today is: 2 servers to host the web UI portion of the application a load balancer to route requests to the 2 different web app servers a third server to host the SQL Server DB and the backend Windows service responsible for queuing / delivering chats So as it stands today, one of the web app servers could go down and we would be ok. However, if something would happen to the SQL Server / Windows Service server we would be boned. My question - how can I make this backend Windows service logic be able to be spread across multiple machines (distributed)? The Windows service is written to accept requests from the Comet server, check for available Agents, and route the chat to those agents. How can I make this more distributed? How can I make it so that I can distribute the work of the backend Windows service can be spread across multiple machines for redundancy and uptime purposes? Will I need to re-write it with distributed computing in mind? I should also note that I am hosting all of this on Rackspace Cloud instances - so maybe it is something I should be less concerned about? Thanks in advance for any help!

• Do you know the minimum builds to create on any branch?

  You should always have three builds on your team project. These should be setup and tested using an empty solution before you write any code at all. Figure: Three builds named in the format [TeamProject].[AreaPath]_[Branch].[Gate|CI|Nightly] for every branch.   These builds should use the same XAML build workflow; however you may set them up to run a different set of tests depending on the time it takes to run a full build. Gate – Only needs to run the smallest set of tests, but should run most if not all of the Unit Test. This is run before developers are allowed to check-in CI – This should run all Unit Tests and all of the automated UI tests. It is run after a developer check-in. Nightly – The Nightly build should run all of the Unit Tests, all of the Automated UI tests and all of the Load and Performance tests. The nightly build is time consuming and will run but once a night. Packaging of your Product for testing the next day may be done at this stage as well. Figure: You can control what tests are run and what data is collected while they are running. Note: We do not run all the tests every time because of the time consuming nature of running some tests, but ALL tests should be run overnight.   I'm trying to make my OpenGL Haskell program gamma correct by making appropriate use of sRGB framebuffers and textures, but I'm running into issues making the default framebuffer sRGB. On the other hand, on my laptop (Windows 7 64-bit with an Intel graphics chip), the program prints 0 (huh?) and I get an sRGB default framebuffer by default whether I request one or not! And on both machines, if I manually create a non-default framebuffer bound to an sRGB texture, the program correctly prints 35904, a.k.a. gl_SRGB. Why am I getting different results on different hardware? Am I doing something wrong? How can I get an sRGB framebuffer consistently on all hardware and target OSes?
