• Ubuntu 12.04 can't boot after installing with software RAID 1

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu with software RAID on my server and there is obviously something that I don't understand about the process. This is the guide that I followed: https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/serverguide/advanced-installation.html I have two identical 1 TB disks in my server. I went through the initial install process and manually set up my partitions. On each disk I set up: (1) 100 MB partition for EFI boot (I didn't originally have this but added it based on a forum post I found after my original install failed to boot, I ended up with EFIboot since that was what the 'guided partitioning' decided to do) (1) 970 MB partition for / (1) 30 MB partition for swap I then created new RAID 1 disks combining the two partitions, one from each disk, such that each partition is mirrored. I then configured their usage as stated above. After saving the configuration I said yes to boot in a degraded state. The rest of the setup went normally, no errors of any kind. I saw GRUB being installed and again no errors. However, after rebooting the server I get the dreaded 'Insert boot media' and nothing happens. I loaded up the recovery disk and the mdadm configuration looks correct. md0 is my EFIBoot partition md1 is my \ partition using ext4 md2 is my swap partition Running file -s /dev/md0 doesn't indicate that GRUB is there and so I attempted to reinstall GRUB using the recovery disk. I selected the md0 disk and it appeared to install just fine. Running file -s /dev/md1 shows the error needs journal recovery, I'm not sure if that's related or not or how to fix that. Rebooting gives me the same problem, no boot media found. I've searched around the internet but can't figure out what to do next or more importantly how to troubleshoot what exactly is going wrong. • Low 'Burst Rate' from SATA drive in HDTune?

  I recently upgraded my laptop's v slow hard drive to a seagate momentus 7200. Everything is working fine, but I'm a bit confused by these benchmark results: The burst rate is significantly less than the Maximim transfer rate, and not much higher than the normal minimum (if you ignore the spikes). What's going on here? On the HDtune website it defines Burst Rate as: ...the highest speed (in megabytes per second) at which data can be transferred from the drive interface (IDE or SCSI for example) to the operating system. Which begs some questions... e.g. if this is the highest, then how did the bechmarking tool record the 103MB/sec maximum? And if this really is the true maximum, then where is the bottleneck? The laptops SATA interface is on an Intel 82801GBM southbridge controller. When I check in hardware manager, I see that it's driver is iaStor.sys from 2005. Maybe that's the issue? I'll look for a newever version, but any insights would be appreciated. Thanks UPDATE: Acorting to this page on the HDTune website... An important parameter of the test is the Burst Rate. This value should always be higher than the maximum transfer rate. A lower value is usually an indication of a configuration problem. So what might be the configuration problem?

• FDE / SSD - partition and leave some unencrypted?

  Just bought a used beast of a desktop pc. The system drive is setup as a Raid 0 SSD (Intel 510 SSD Drives) with 128 each. I will probably not have to many programs beyond office and maybe Adobe CS if I spring for it, I will be keeping big data on a regular hdd. My question is about setting up TrueCrypt with my configuration. I have not previously done full disk encryption, but I feel that its probably a good idea. I have done some speed tests using file containers on the hdd and the sdd with truecrypt. While there is a huge hit with the SSDs and Truecrypt, it still outperforms the hdd on its own by a good margin, so I think i will be okay for my needs with truecrypt. I have seen in a few places that they recommend partitioning the drive and leavign some of the SSD not inside truecrypt, does this really make a difference? If so, how much should I leave? Will there be any issue in the Raid0 configuration? I am not really concerned about all the wear leveling issue, rather loose data and be secure, but since I don't need all that space neccesarily, I would like to optimize my setup for security and speed.

• Passenger and ServerAlias not cooperating

  I have a ruby application that runs on a server with multiple IP addresses and mutliple vhosts. Here is the configuration of the problematic virtual host: <VirtualHost 10.0.0.10:80> ServerName realname.example.com ServerAlias alias.example.com DocumentRoot /var/www/sites/example/current/public <Directory /var/www/sites/example/current/public> AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/example_error_log CustomLog /var/log/httpd/example_access_log common RailsEnv production RackEnv production </VirtualHost> When I pull up realname.example.com the Ruby on Rails application works correctly. On the other hand alias.example.com just gives me Not Found: / I'm fairly certain the correct vhost is getting used because alias.example.com produces a 404 in the correct log file. I've tried adding logging to the Passenger config and it seems to indicate that Passenger is getting the request. Note: I can't redirect alias.example.com to realname.example.com. realname is accessed using a CDN, whereas alias is directly accessed. Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working? I've been banging my head for days and I've got a similar configuration in QA that works as expected.

• Things to consider when building a continuous integration server?

  I'm new to continuous integration, but immediately realize its value, and I want to get one set up right away. I have played with TeamCity and have it working in a VM great. Now, I don't want to spend money on another system, so I was planning on just doing the VM again on a faster machine (i.e. my dev system). There are a few questions that come to mind with this: Hard disk allocation - how big should it be? Sure, 60GB seems like more than enough, but people also used to think that we'd never need more than 64KB of RAM Backups - is it even important to back up the integration server? Sure, I guess it's nice so that one doesn't have to go through the entire configuration process again, but I would think that's about it. I could snapshot my VM every time I do a configuration change, and then do a backup of applications only (ignore the buildAgent stuff). Migration - if I want to go away from a VM on my dev system, to a new server, which maybe even runs Windows Server 2003, is it easy enough? Perhaps this is a particular point best suited for StackOverflow.

• Static DHCP binding

  Good time of day, SF people. I have created a manual DHCP binding entry on a Cisco router so that a client would always get leased to it. The clients wants to get the same address on both of his dual-boot linux systems. He tries to get an IP address leased and he succeeds on one of the dual-boot operating systems. When he reboots to another one he gets a lease for a completely different one. I don't get it. The MAC addresses are the same (we checked in ifconfig, so what could be happening here? Why is the router confused? Or is it something else? Also, how can I check DHCP server IP address who I have got an IP address from (on Linux)? Configuration on Cisco: ip dhcp pool MANUAL_BINDING0001 host 192.168.0.64 255.255.255.0 hardware-address dead.beef.1337 dns-server 192.168.8.11 default-router 192.168.0.254 domain-name verynicedomainigothere.cn PS. • Two mouse, one left handed and another right handed. At the same time

  I would like to have two mouse connected to my computer, and have one mouse left-handed, another right-handed. And not needing to change any settings for using any of them. I've googled for this and did not find some information, but nothing helpful. Somebody suggested to have 2 accounts, some other suggested a short-cut that changes mouse buttons over. I did not like any of that. And I remember, I saw somebody using their laptop with right-handed touch-pad and left-handed mouse. At the same time. Both of my mouse are plain vanilla USB, with no drivers, tried finding drivers for any of the mouse did not get me anywhere. This is how mouse configuration looks like: There is no option for different mouse to be configured different. I think I need to install some mouse drivers/software that allow different configuration. Is there anything like this availble?? Many thanks in advance! p.s. Using Windows 7 Pro, one mouse is Fujitsu, another Sandsrom.

• How can I get Solr listening on 0.0.0.0 instead of just localhost?

  I'm trying to get Solr to listen on 0.0.0.0 instead of just localhost, and it doesn't seem to be picking up the configuration options. • Using Monit to monitor Resque

  I'm trying to use resque as a job runner for Rails. I've tried this config, and many other ways of demonizing the rescue task (because running rake resque:work leaves the terminal tied to that command). Unfortunately, their example configuration doesn't work for me. Does the configuration look correct? Or is there another way to turn the process into a daemon? • Jabber client for windows 7

  I am looking for a jabber client with some specific functions. I have spent 1½ day looking for one and it is getting tiresome. Clients that I have been using, that have what I need, but I am not interesting for a reason in are: Pidgin, does not show complete messages in their popups. Miranda IM, I have a constant disconnect issue that does not seem to be resolved in my case. What I need are: Popups A popup that shows broadcasts to users. A popup that show when my username is typed in a conference chat. I need to be able to view the full message in the popup. No configuration of a theme to make this enabled, or if there is a working theme for it already. Preferable placement is on the top right of the screen. Able to 'popup' when running full screen applications, much like games. Conferences Easy access to bookmarked conferences. I do not want to go through submenus to rejoin a disconnected or closed conference. If I close the conference window I want to be connected to the conference until I exit the client. Tabbed interface. Configuration Sober configurations, options are great but there is a limit and the above needs to be availble in the options in a understandable manner. What I wish for: MSN Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Facebook Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Conferences/chats Not needed! Eyecandy is always nice.

• Can't connect to wi-fi hotspot in Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm new to Ubuntu. I'm having a wireless network problem in Ubuntu 11.10. I made a hotspot using Connectify from a computer which is running Windows 7. I can access it in Windows 7 but not in Ubuntu 11.10. Every time I access it,I get a message "disconnected". I'm using msi fx 400 notebook with Intel Centrino wireless -N 1000 wireless card. • oracle access on vmware fusion

  Hello, I'm running snow leopard and I'm doing some development that requires some network knowledge. I've installed vmware fusion 3.0 and I've set up a virtual machine with windows 2003 server. I need to mimic the exact configuration of another server in the network, so I really need to run the versions I'll be mentioning here. Besides, I set up two network configurations on the VM: one NAT config (so that I can have internet access) and one host-only config (because I need to use another server's mac adress and my local area network might have a problem with it) From the installation of windows 2003, I then installed oracle 10.2.0.1. During the installation I received a warning about the primary ip-address of the system being dhcp assigned, but I ignored it (maybe it was a mistake)... Now, from experience, unless the DHCP assigned address changes, I should be able to access the guest system's database from the host system, so I went to safari and tried to access the oracle em. As it turns out, because my computer is on a company network, the company's DNS doesn't know about the virtual machine, unless of course I switch to a bridged network config. However, I don't want to do that because I don't to mix up the domains. So I guess the question is, how can I define my own dns or router, or whatever it is that I need to define so that whenever I try the guest system's ip address form the host, it will use the vmnet1 or vmnet8 interface define by vmware and bypass the dns configuration of my local area network. I'd also like to know what to do incase I want to change ip addresses on the guest machine without having oracle go haywire (I've noticed a few folders on the structure which are specific for the very first IP Address)... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• where are the default ulimit values set? (linux, centos)

  I have two CentOS (5) servers with nearly identical specs. When I login and do: ulimit -u on one machine, I get unlimited and on the other, 77824 When I run a cron like * * * * * ulimit -u > ulimit.txt I get the same results (unlimited, 77824). I am trying to determine where these are set so that I can alter them. They are not set in any of my profiles (.bashrc, /etc/profile, etc .. these wouldn't affect cron anyway) nor in /etc/security/limits.conf (which is empty). I have scoured google and even gone so far as to do grep -Ir 77824 / but nothing has turned up so far. I don't understand how these machines could have come preset with different limits. I am actually wondering not for these machines, but for a different (CentOS 6) machine which has a limit of 1024, which is far too small. I need to run cron jobs with a higher limit and the only way I know how to set that is in the cron job itself. That's ok, but I'd rather set it system wide so it's not as hacky. Thanks for any help. This seems like it should be easy (NOT) EDIT -- SOLVED Ok, I figured this out. It seems to be an issue either with CentOS 6 or perhaps my machine configuration. On the CentOS 5 configuration, I can set in /etc/security/limits.conf: * - nproc unlimited and that would effectively update the accounts and cron limits. However, this does not work in my CentOS 6 box. Instead, I must do: myname1 - nproc unlimited myname2 - nproc unlimited ... And things work as expected. Maybe the UID specification works to, but the wildcard (*) definitely DOES NOT here. Oddly, wildcards DO work for the 'nofile' limit. I still would love to know where the default values are actually coming from, because by default, this file is empty and I couldn't see why I had different defaults for the two CentOS boxes, which had identical hardware and were from the same provider.

• Looking for VCS wrapper that tracks system files changing across the whole *nix OS and sends diffs through email

  I need some software that looks after custom directories across the whole OS (i.e. /etc) and alerting me if someone edit something file inside. Additionally, this tool must automatically commit and push changes into backup server, so I can easily determine when specific change in specific file was made. I'm using cvsbackup right now but I want to create or found something more modern. I think using git as VCS is a great idea. I could have local repository and easily revert changes in my configuration files. Furthermore, pushing changes to the remote repository would helps me to recover my configuration files when the server is fault. It doesn't seems difficult to write some wrapper around the git but there are a lot of problems. For example, I need to track custom directories: /usr/local/nginx/ and /etc/. So the destination point for my git repository is /. I don't need to track the other directories so I must to write overwhelming .gitignore rule: * !.gitignore !/etc/ !etc/* !/usr /usr/* !/usr/local /usr/local/* !/usr/local/nginx !/usr/local/nginx/* It's very daunting and prone to error. So it's maybe a good idea to create intermediate file that wrapper reads and converts to .gitignore format. Additionally, I don't want to keep my .git folder in / partition so I need to set appropriate GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE variables for git. Is there any ready to use tools for implementation this task? I don't found any but I don't believe that no one needs this feature.

• Problems deploying MVC2 - Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.UrlParameter'

  Hi Everyone, I have problems deploying MVC2 application to my hosting. It shows the following error: Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.UrlParameter' from assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'. It looks like it does not understand the new "optional URL parameters" feature of MVC2. This is just a simple test application I created with "New Project" wizard in VWD 2008. It works ok localy both in IIS and Visual Studio web servers. MVC1 web sites are working ok on the hosting server. I've contacted the hosting support and they installed MVC2 but the problem still exists. The web site is working in ASP.NET 2.0 integrated pipeline mode. Does anyone know why it is happening? Thank you!

  I'm fumbling my way through a basic installation of TFS 2010... I see that the TFS_Configuration and Tfs_DefaultCollection databases were successfully created on my local machine. The installation seemed to go smoothly, but it looks like I need to configure a Team Project Collect before I can start using it. Yet, the wizard seems unable to locate the appropriate database that I expected should have been created during the setup process. The server name defaulted properly to the name of the local machine. Did I miss a step somewhere?

  Hi All! I have a really, really long form (about 300 fields) that I broke down into different sections using this slick jQuery plugin Form Wizard. If you group your form into different fieldsets, the FormWizard will automagically display one section at a time, with a Next hyperlink to take you to the next section: <a id="step0Next" class="next" href="#">Next ></a> My question is this: Using the jQuery Validation plugin, how can I validate each fieldset when a user clicks Next, and so forth, instead of using the Submit button. Put differently, how can I change the trigger event from Submit to six different hyperlinks for six separate sections? Thanks for helping this newb out.

  I have set up references to 2 web services in a separate assembly TestProj.Core. I reference this Project in a Web Application Project called TestProj.Web. When I setup the references in TestProj.Core the wizard gave me an app.config and through an application settings section into it. How do I get these settings to my web app? Copy and paste these into web.config? "Always Copy" the app.config out to the bin directory? Any good articles on mutiple configs?

  Hi All, i am new to the web development environment, having came from a unix/c environment. i've been recently asked to create a web app, which i thought would require postgresql, java/j2ee, and javascript for the client interface. as i had wanted a nicer gui, i've been reading up on extjs, which looks really nice to me. a colleague mentioned that the time needed time needed to learn all these various pieces is time consuming, and Jdeveloper seems to provide most of what we'd need (i was shown a demo, which appears to be able to generate some nice web interfaces). what are the pros and cons with the different approaches ? some i can think of: - jdeveloper is an integrated ide, which creates UI easily, tightly integrated with database. (pro) - jdeveloper will be heavier? (con) - wizard generated code may be harder to refactor ? I tried dgv.BeginEdit(true), but it doesn't work. The EditMode works fine if I used wizard to bind datasources to the dgv, but I need to execute my own customized queries and be able to update them directly.

• creating a Grails application in IntelliJ IDEA 9.0.x fails to prompt for "create-app"

  When I create a Grails application in IntelliJ 9 on Snow Leopard I am not prompted to create an application. IntelliJ finished the wizard and creates an empty project that is not a Grails application. I have tried two different Apple computers (MacBook Pro and Mac Pro) it does not work on either. The same steps on a Linux system results in a prompt to "create-app" and a Grails application. I have already tried the steps in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/470882/intellij-idea-setup-on-os-x Is there a specific place that Grails needs to be installed? Has anyone else seen this behavior? Thanks
