• Noob Droid Question regarding random number

  Brand new to droid programming, but would love to learn as much as possible, so I finally got my emulator working correctly, I even got a hello world button to work, I'm attempting to make this button display a random number, I've googled this and came up with this code: Random generator = new Random(); int n = generator.nextInt(n); I fixed the Random function by including some Random java utility. I'm assuming this code above goes in the .java file of the project, so my button code looks as follows (tested and works): PopUpText.makeText(v.getContext(), "Hello World", PopUpText.LENGTH_LONG).show(); I figured I could replace "Hello World" with n to display the number in the box, however the following error is stopping the compile: The local variable n may not have been initialized Any ideas why this is happening? Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

  I have form below which contains a text field and a button. when i start typing it shows hints from my database and on clicking button or hiting enter key it displys search results. ajax technology is used for both hints and search results and it is working well but THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT WORKS ONLY THE FIRST TIME PAGE LOADS OR ONLY AFTER REFRESHING THE PAGE. • How would you implement the "tell don't ask" principle in HAML?

  Here's the thing. I have a button that, depending on the scenario, will behave, look and have different text. Here's how it, roughly, looks like at the moment: - if params[:param_A] && @statement_A %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_B"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') - elsif params[:param_A] %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_A"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') There's also a CSS class both buttons should have IF statement_B is true. So it is a mess. And I recently read about the "Tell, don't ask" principle which I liked very much, so I'd love to apply it here... but I'm not sure how. I know I could make a helper, but I'd like to stay away from them because reasons (I really have some valid reasons to do so, but those are beyond the scope of this question). I can resort to that as a last resource, but would rather find another solution.

• Is it possible to use an input within a <label> field?

  I have a bunch of optional "write-in" values for a survey I'm working on. These are basically a radio button with a textbox within the answer field - the idea being that you would toggle the button and write something into the box. What I'd like to do is have the radio button toggled whenever a user clicks in the text field - this seems like a use-case that makes a lot of sense. Doing this: <input type="radio" id="radiobutton"><label for="radiobutton">Other: <input type="text" id="radiobutton_other"></label> works fine in Chrome (and I am guessing, other WebKit browsers as well), but there are weird selection issues in Firefox, so I'm assuming its a non-standard practice that I should stay away from. Is there a way to replicate this functionality without using JavaScript? I have an onclick function that will work, but we're trying to make our site usable for people who might have NoScript-type stuff running.

• DataBind and Postback

  This is a general how does DataBind work questions... I have a simple page with a GridView that is bound (in the aspx code) to an ObjectDataSource. I can look in the Select() function called by the ObjectDataSource to see that it is called on the initial load and on every post back. I have some logic that happens on post backs that will affect the GridView's data, and I want to call GridView.DataBind() later on in the post back, after I've made some changes. Is there a way to prevent the automatic rebinding that happens on each post back? Does this mean I can't use an ObjectDataSource for this control?

  I'm trying to call a Page Method using a jQuery 'attached' event function, in which I like to use the closure to keep the event target local, as below, but page method calls declare several 'error' functions, and I would like to use one function for all of them.   This is a follow up to my previous question: link text In gridview's column i have a linkbutton and a label under it. I want to hide/unhide label when linkbutton is clicked. I use javascript because i don't want any postbacks.   I have data related as follows: A table of Houses A table of Boxes (with an FK back into Houses) A table of Things_in_boxes (with an FK back to Boxes) A table of Owners (with an FK back into Houses) In a nutshell, a House has many Boxes, and each Box has many Things in it. In addition, each House has many Owners. If I know two Owners (say Peter and Paul), how can I list all the Things that are in the Boxes that are in the Houses owned by these guys? Also, I'd like to master this SQL stuff. Can anyone recommend a good book/resource? (I'm using MySQL). Thanks!

  I have a Table and a Button. Table's cells have controls LiteralControl and CheckBox. I check some fields and then by click on button i remove these fields from database. On event Page_PreRender i clear Table and then fill it with updated data. Then it shows me Table with updated data. But if i check fields of table again and do a click on a button it wont do what i expected. In Page_Load event i see that it dont save properties of controls. Checked CheckBox controls appears as unchecked.

• Can I prevent RequiredFieldValidation from triggering against postbacks from a specific control.

  I have a web form with a number of textbox controls which I've associated RequiredFieldValidator's with. I have a ValidationSummary control on the page to render any incomplete fields when I submit the page. However, I've just had to add an image upload facility to the same page, and have an 'Upload' button which I have posting back to perform the upload. I don't want this upload button to trigger the RequiredFieldValidators for the rest of the page though - I want this upload postback to be ignored as far as the validation goes. What's the best way to stop the RequiredFieldValidator's from firing when I submit this upload button on the page because at the moment, the upload won't occur unless I have first field out all of the other textbox controls on the page.

  I know that when creating buttons, like next and previous, that the code can be somewhat long to get those buttons to function. I had put private fillTextFields boolean = false; but this does not seem to be right... I'm just hoping someone could explain it better. Thanks :)

Any idea where to start? I can't really think of anything besides the naive approach (ie. trying all permutations) which would take too long to be a valid answer. Btw, the language there says c++ and pascal I think, but i don't care what language you use - I mean really all I want is a hint as to the direction I should proceed in, and perhpas a short explanation to go along with it. It feels like I'm missing something obvious... Of course extended speculation is more than welcome, but I just wanted to clarify that I'm not looking for a full solution here :) Short version of the question: You have a binary string N of length 1-100 (in the question they use H's and G's instead of one's and 0's). You must remove all of the digits from it, in the least number of steps possible. In each step you may remove any number of adjacent digits so long as they are the same. That is, in each step you can remove any number of adjacent G's, or any number of adjacent H's, but you can't remove H's and G's in one step. Example: HHHGHHGHH Solution to the example: 1. HHGGHH (remove middle Hs) 2. HHHH (remove middle Gs) 3. Done (remove Hs) -->Would return '3' as the answer. Note that there can also be a limit placed on how large adjacent groups have to be when you remove them. For example it might say '2', and then you can't remove single digits (you'd have to remove pairs or larger groups at a time). Solution I took Mark Harrison's main algorithm, and Paradigm's grouping idea and used them to create the solution below. • best approach to do jsf form validation

  If I have many input controls in a form (There are separate validators for each of these input controls - like required,length and so on ) , there is a command button which submits the form and calls an action method. The requirement is - though the input control values are , say , individually okay - the combination of these values should be okay to process them together after the form submission - Where do i place the code to validate them together? 1) Can i add a custom validator for the command button and validate the combination together? like validate(FacesContext arg0, UIComponent arg1, Object value) but even then I will not have values of the other input controls except for the command button's/component's value right ? 2) can i do the validation of the combination in the action method and add validation messages using FacesMessage ? or do you suggest any other approach?   I'm developing an android app that has a bunch of screens (activities) that are supposed to have "continue" and "back" buttons at the top. Can you tell me the right pattern for implementing this? I've seen some iPhone apps that have this but Android apps usually don't (I think partly because the back button is part of the phone). I found a post online about an Activity class that has "sub activities" which kind of seems like what I want to do, but I'm wondering if there's a simpler solution or pattern for creating flows like this (in which several activities are linked with continue/back buttons).
