• How to model my database when using entity framework 4?

  Trying to wrap my head around the best approach in modelling a database when we are using Entity Framework 4 as the ORM layer. We are going to use asp.net mvc 2 for the application. Is it worth trying to model using the class diagram modeller that comes with Visual Studio 2010 where you graphically configure your models into the EDMX file and then generate out the database structure? I have run into a bunch of non trivial issues and for complex many to many mappings or multi primary key entities the answer is not that obvious even after poking around a while with the tools. I figure its easy at this point to give up and start modelling the DB using real, working DB modelling tools and then try to generate out the EDMX from the database, rather than trying to do the model first approach.

• Possible Performance Considerations using Linq to SQL Repositories

  I have an ASP.NET MVC application that uses Linq to SQL repositories for all interactions with the database. To deal with data security, I do trimming to filter data to only those items to which the user has access. This occurs in several places: Data in list views Links in a menu bar A treeview on the left hand side containing links to content Role-based security A special security attribute, inheriting from AuthorizeAttribute, that implements content-based authorization on every controller method. Each of these places instantiates a repository, which opens a Linq to Sql DataContext and accesses the database. So, by my count, each request for a page access opens at least six separate Linq to SQL DataContexts. Should I be concerned about this from a performance perspective, and if so, what can be done to mitigate it?

• Does MVC replace traditional manually created UI, BLL, DAL ?

  I'm use to creating the UI, BLL, DAL by hand (some times i've used LINQ-SQL or SubSonic for the DAL). I've done several small projects using MVC since it's release. On these projects i've still continued to write a BLL and DAL by hand and then incorporate those into the MVC's models/controllers. Looking to optimize my time on projects this seems like over kill and a potential waste of time. My question is: Would it be acceptable to roll a DAL such as SubSonic and directly use it in the Models/Controllers of my MVC web app? Now the models & controllers would act as the BLL. I just see this as a major time savor to not have to worry about another tier. (Agree ? "Please state way" : "Make argument")

• How do I get property injection working in Ninject for a ValidationAttribute in MVC?

  I have a validation attribute set up where I need to hit the database to accomplish the validation. I tried setting up property injection the same way I do elsewhere in the project but it's not working. What step am I missing? public class ApplicationIDValidAttribute : ValidationAttribute { [Inject] protected IRepository<MyType> MyRepo; public override bool IsValid(object value) { if (value == null) return true; int id; if (!Int32.TryParse(value.ToString(), out id)) return false; // MyRepo is null here and is never injected var obj= MyRepo.LoadById(id); return (obj!= null); } One other thing to point out, I have the Ninject kernel set up to inject non-public properties, so I don't think that is the problem. • Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the prefered method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

• Classic ASP and MVC side-by-side, different projects?

  I've tried asking this in a few different ways, but let's give it another shot (as I've yet to receive an answer and this is driving me nuts!) I have a very large classic ASP 3.0 application (~350K lines) that I want to start migrating to ASP.NET MVC. I'd like to keep the old ASP files in a separate project from the MVC stuff. Ideas on how to debug these? Should I just dump the files in the same folder and create two different projects ( a WAP and an MVC app) that reference the relevant files and folders required by each? This should work, but does anyone have a better idea? I need the ability to migrate small parts of the application individually as this will probably take a year or two to complete.

• How to configure IIS to serve my 404 response with my custom content?

  This question is related to this, hopefully better phrased. I would like to serve a custom 404 page from ASP.NET MVC. I have the route handler and all the infrastructure set up to ensure that nonexistent routes are handled by a single action: public ActionResult Handle404() { Response.StatusCode = 404; return View("NotFound"); } Problem: IIS serves back its own content (some predefined message) when I set Response.StatusCode to 404 before returning the content. On the VS development web server, this works as intended - the status code of the HTTP response is 404 while my content (the NotFound view) is served. I believe that when the IIS processing pipeline sees that the application returns 404, it simply replaces the whole response with its own. What setting in IIS affects this behavior? I do not have access to the IIS installation so I can not investigate this - however, I can ask the hosting provider to tweak the configuration for me if I know what exactly needs to be changed.

• Can you specify if aspnet_compiler.exe creates a debug or release build?

  I wish to compile my asp.net MVC application using aspnet_compiler.exe from the comandline to speed up cold startup. I'm wondering how it determines if it should do a release or debug build. Is it always release? Does it depend on what the web.config file says when you run aspnet_compiler.exe? What happens to an application that's been compiled w/ aspnet_compiler.exe if someone changed the bug attribute in the web.config file after it has been published? Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated.

• IIS not serving up .dat files.

  Hi all, I have a ASP MVC web application that uses a plugin to load images and points for a 3d application. When debugging with the the Visual Studio development server the images and the points are served up great... http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s19/littleniv/Debugging/local.png Second image: same url but iis.png When running in IIS 7 though the .Dat point files do not serve and produce a 404. I've noticed the caching is marked as private in fiddler, but i don't know what this means. Can anyone help? Cheers, Stu

• Best way to perform authentication on every request

  Hello. In my asp.net mvc 2 app, I'm wondering about the best way to implement this: For every incoming request I need to perform custom authorization before allowing the file to be served. (This is based on headers and contents of the querystring. If you're familiar with how Amazon S3 does rest authentication - exactly that). I'd like to do this in the most perfomant way possible, which probably means as light a touch as possible, with IIS doing as much of the actual work as possible. The service will need to handle GET requests, as well as writing new files coming in via POST/PUT requests. The requests are for an abitrary file, so it could be: GET http://storage.foo.com/bla/egg/foo18/something.bin POST http://storage.foo.com/else.txt Right now I've half implemented it using an IHttpHandler which handles all routes (with routes.RouteExistingFiles = true), but not sure if that's the best, or if I should be hooking into the lifecycle somewhere else?   Hi, I am doing performance tweaking of a simple app that uses MVC on IIS 7.5. I have a StopWatch starting up in Application_BeginRequest and I take a snapshot at Controller.OnActionExecuting. So I measure the time spend in the entire IIS pipeline: from request receipt to the moment execution finally gets to my controller. I obtain 700 microseconds on my 3GHz quad-core (project compiled Release x64), and I wonder where the bottleneck is, especially hearing some people say that one can get up to 8000 page loads per second with MVC. How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?

  Hey... its XMAS Eve and something is bugging me... yes, I have work on my mind even when I am on holiday. The vast amount of frameworks available for PHP now use MVC. Even ASP.net has its own MVC module. I can see the attraction of MVC, I really can and I use it frequently. The only downside that I can see is that you have to fire up the whole system to execute a page request. Depending on your task this can be a little wasteful. So the question. In a professional environment is this the only way to use PHP nowadays or are their other design methods which have alternative benefits?

  Hi guys, Just a general question really. I have taken on the management of an application written in C# MVC that uses the asp.net membership api. With this a user can register, change their password, etc. My application consists of two areas, administrator and user. This adminstrator's area has lots of custom admin functionality relating to the application, however has no functionality utilizing the membership api. I want to be able to use the membership api for user management functions such as resetting a password of a user who has forgotten theirs, lock users out, etc. Are there any resources or articles out there that delve into this aspect of using the membership api? Any help would be appreciated :) thanks

  As of right now, I am still shaky on classes, so I don't want to use any classes for my site. I'm still practicing with classes. But how can I implement the MVC idea without classes? Would this work for a MVC? index.php (the view) index_controller.php index_model.php Is this right for what a MVC should be? View: show html, css, forms Controller: get $_POST from forms and any data from the user, get info from db Model: do all the functions, insert/delete in db, etc Basically separate the HTML/css for the view, all the data collecting for the controller, and the logic for the model. And just connect them all using require_once.

Same thing on olx.com - location and number of items for each category. Now imagine I have tables: [products] (Id, Name, CategoryId, LocationId) [Categories] (Id,Name) [Location] (Id, Name) My question how can I do the same, cause count things even with caching looks expensive?   Hi, Is it possible to access a parent class from within an attribute. For example I would like to create a DropDownListAttribute which can be applied to a property of a viewmodel class in MVC and then create a drop down list from an editor template. I am following a similar line as Kazi Manzur Rashid here. He adds the collection of categories into viewdata and retrieves them using the key supplied to the attribute. I would like to do something like the below, public ExampleDropDownViewModel { public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Categories {get;set;} [DropDownList("Categories")] public int CategoryID { get;set; } } The attribute takes the name of the property containing the collection to bind to. I can't figure out how to access a property on the parent class of the attribute. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks

  in my asp.net MVC project i have an database connection with connectionstring: Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=dbname;Integrated Security=True All users can execute Stored Procedures on that connection and i want to log those users. so after each execution I store "User.Identity.Name" to another database. This work great on my development machine but after deployment, to access the site i have to go through a VPN-connention and then remote desktop to the same server that the IIS is running on and use a web-browser there. Then i get User.Identity.Name: "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE". i would expect it to be the credentials i entered in remote desktop that have access to the database. any idea how i can get this to work? iis6 authentication: "windows authentication: enabled" web.config:

• The Purpose of a Service Layer and ASP.NET MVC 2

  In an effort to understand MVC 2 and attempt to get my company to adopt it as a viable platform for future development, I have been doing a lot of reading lately. Having worked with ASP.NET pretty exclusively for the past few years, I had some catching up to do. Currently, I understand the repository pattern, models, controllers, data annotations, etc. But there is one thing that is keeping me from completely understanding enough to start work on a reference application. The first is the Service Layer Pattern. I have read many blog posts and questions here on Stack Overflow, but I still don't completely understand the purpose of this pattern. I watched the entire video series at MVCCentral on the Golf Tracker Application and also looked at the demo code he posted and it looks to me like the service layer is just another wrapper around the repository pattern that doesn't perform any work at all. I also read this post: http://www.asp.net/Learn/mvc/tutorial-38-cs.aspx and it seemed to somewhat answer my question, however, if you are using data annotations to perform your validation, this seems unnecessary. I have looked for demonstrations, posts, etc. but I can't seem to find anything that simply explains the pattern and gives me compelling evidence to use it. Can someone please provide me with a 2nd grade (ok, maybe 5th grade) reason to use this pattern, what I would lose if I don't, and what I gain if I do?a

  Hi Is it possible to have to make a html for helper in asp.net mvc 2.0 have a default value of "empty string" Like if I do this Html.TextBoxFor( u => u.ProductName) would render to <input id ="ProductName" name="ProdcutName" type="text" value="Jim" /> Now I don't want the textbox to display jim. I want it to display nothing. <input id ="ProductName" name="ProdcutName" type="text" value="" /> I tried to do this Html.TextBoxFor( u => u.ProductName, new { @value = " "}) but that seems to do nothing. So how can I do this. I hope you can do something like this otherwise I think these new helpers have a great flaw since now I need to use like javascript to remove them since I hardly ever want a default value in the textbox especially when I have a label right beside the textbox saying what it is.

• CSS file not getting downloaded in Visual Studio 2008 SP?

  Hi guys, This might sound a little wierd, but all of a sudden the CSS and Javascript files referenced in my master page are not being downloaded while the page is being rendered. I am working on a ASP.NET MVC project and things were all fine like half an hour ago! Here is what I have in head section of the master page, <link href="/Content/MyCSS.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script src="/Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> I can see the CSS class intellisense while designing pages. But in the page source I do not see these files being added. I can see the css being applied in the VS designer. I have tried restarting VS, restarting my machine too. Anyone else faced this situation before. I might go crazy now.
