Starting out with OpenGL when most tutorials are out of date

I'm sure there are already a bunch of questions like this asked, but the constant updating of the OpenGL library throws them all away, and in a month or two, the answers here will be worthless again. I am ready to start programming in OpenGL using C++. I've got a working compiler (DevCpp; do NOT ask me to switch to VC++, and don't ask me why). Now I'm just looking for a solid tutorial on how to program with OpenGL. My assistant found the tutorial provided by NeHe Productions, but as I've come to find out, it's WAY OUT OF DATE! (although I did pull together a basic window to support an OpenGL canvas) Then I went online, and found the OpenGL SuperBible, which apparently uses freeglut? But what I'd like to know is whether or not SuperBible 5th edition is up to date any longer. The suggestion to freeglut I found said the latest version was 2.6.0 but now it's 2.8.0! Is the OpenGL SuperBible still a good, and fairly up-to-date place to start? Is there a better place to go to learn OpenGL? Am I allowed to simply store freeglut in the DevCpp include directory (maybe in GL), or is there some important procedure? Are there any comments or suggestions that I didn't think to ask since I'm only just beginning? @dreta cleared some things up for me, so now I have a better idea of what to ask: I think I'd like to start out with OpenGL using a wrapper library instead of directly accessing OpenGL.I just think that, for a beginner, it would be easier for me to program and get good results, while I don't yet have to understand all the grimy details (as @stephelton mentioned). The problem is, I can't find any library that doesn't have undefined references to no longer supported functions. Freeglut sounds operational, but it still uses GLU.Does anyone know what I can do?Also, I tried compiling the first SuperBible's source, but I got errors since GLAPI is not being defined as a type, the error originating in the GLU library. I'd like to use the SuperBible, but I don't know how to fix this.

Tip: Keeping the ADF Mobile PDF Guide up to date

This is a little tip for customers using Oracle's ADF Mobile. If you're like me, it's possible you don't rely on the online HTML version of the Mobile Developer's Guide for ADF, but rather download a PDF version of the file to use locally (look to the "PDF" link to the top right of the guide). For me the convenience of the PDF is it's faster, I can search the whole document easily, I can split read the document across two pages on my home monitor, if I lose my internet connection the document is still available, and it's easy to read on my iPad (especially on long haul flights to the US across the Pacific where there is no internet connection!). The trigger point for me to download the Oracle PDF documentation has always been on a new point release of JDeveloper. However in the case of ADF Mobile, as an extension to JDeveloper it is releasing at a much faster and independent schedule to JDeveloper and this includes updates to the documentation. As such the 11.1.2.4.0 ADF Mobile PDF guide you have locally might be out of date and you should take the opportunity to download the latest version. This is also particularly important for ADF Mobile as not only are many new features being added for each release and included in the new documentation, but the guide is under rapid improvement to clarify much of what has been written to date. Our documentation teams are super responsive to suggestions on how to improve the guides and this often shows per point release. How do you tell you've the latest guide? Look to the document part number which right now is "E24475-03". This is a unique ID per release for the document, the first part being the document number, and the part after the dash the revision number. If the website document number has a higher revision number, time to download a new up to date PDF. Struggling running ASP MVC2 on IIS6.0

Hi I could use a little Help using MVC2 on an IIS6.0 Its an MVC2 RC2 [.NET 3.5]. I followed the famous Haacked Tutorial, created a virtual folder, created a Default.aspx Website for my Project, put everything to my virtual folder. The routing is modified, using wildcard mapping [anyway its not running without, too], according to the Tutorial. I also checked, that all Webservices are running [asp.net 2 / asp.net 4 / active server pages]. The routing is working fine on my development machine, even checked it using Haacks routing debugger ... [http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/13/url-routing-debugger.aspx] Seems fine so far, but I get only 404 - not found errors. Is there something I might be missing ? Disable Razors default .cshtml handler in a ASP.NET Web Application

Does anyone know how to disable the .cshtml extension completely from an ASP.NET Web Application? In essence I want to hijack the .cshtml extension and provide my own implementation based on a RazorEngine host, although when I try to access the page.cshtml directly it appears to be running under an existing WebPages razor host that I'm trying to disable. Note: it looks like its executing .cshtml pages under the System.Web.WebPages.Razor context as the Microsoft.Data Database is initialized. I don't even have any Mvc or WebPages dlls referenced, just System.Web.dll and a local copy of System.Web.Razor with RazorEngine.dll I've created a new ASP.NET Web .NET 4.0 Application and have tried to clear all buildProviders and handlers as seen below: <system.web> <httpModules> <clear/> </httpModules> <compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0"> <buildProviders> <clear/> </buildProviders> </compilation> <httpHandlers> <clear/> <add path="*" type="MyHandler" verb="*"/> </httpHandlers> </system.web> <system.webServer> <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"> <clear/> </modules> <handlers> <clear/> <add path="*" name="MyHandler" type="MyHandler" verb="*" preCondition="integratedMode" resourceType="Unspecified" allowPathInfo="true" /> </handlers> </system.webServer> Although even with this, when I visit any page.cshtml page it still bypasses My wildcard handler and tries to execute the page itself. Precompile asp.net webpart dll

Hi, I have built a few custom webparts for WSS 3 using the Visual Studio 2010 Web application template. When I compile the application, Visual Studio creates the assembly file in the bin directory which I copy over later to the production server (another machine) with WSS 3. The compiled webpart dll is copied into the bin folder inside the virtual directory of WSS. I would like to precompile the webpart / dll using the aspnet_precompiler on my development machine to reduce the delay when the page is first requested. I have used the following command to precompile the entire Web Application: aspnet_precompile -v / -p PATH_TO_WEB_APPLICATION C:\WebApp -errorstack The compilation runs fine without any errors and I end up with a couple of .compiled files and also a Web_App_xxxxx.dll file inside the C:\WebApp\bin folder. From here onwards I am a bit lost how to proceed. Could you give me an advise to which folder I need to copy the compiled files on the production server? Do they need to go into the bin folder on the server or better inside the temporary asp.net folder %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\versionNumber\Temporary ASP.NET Files folder? Can I precompile the Web application on a development machine without the IIS metabase? Cheers, Mathias

TDD - testing business rules/validation in ASP.NET MVC

Hi, I am using the sharp architecture so I can easily use mocks etc. in my unit tests and/or during TDD. I have quite complicated business rules and would like to test them at the controller level. I am just wondering how other people do this? For me validation tests business rules at three levels: (1) Property level (e.g. property is required) (2) Intra property level (e.g. start date < end date) (3) Persistence level (e.g. name is unique, parent cannot be child of child) My validation framework also assigns errors to properties. I am just wondering what other people do? Do you write a test for each business rule and check whether the correct error message is assigned to the correct property (i.e. looking at the ASP.MVC ModelState)? I hope my question makes sense. First of all, I'm still working in classic ASP (vbScript) with an MS Access Database. And, yes I know its archaic, but I'm still hopeful I can do this! So now to my problem: Take the following table as an example: PROJECTS ContactName StartDate EndDate Complete Mitch 2009-02-13 2011-04-23 No Eric 2006-10-01 2008-11-15 Yes Mike 2007-05-04 2009-03-30 Yes Kyle 2009-03-07 2012-07-08 No Using ASP (with VBScript), and an MS Access Database as the backend, I’d like to be able to sort this table with the following logic: I would like to sort this table by date, however, depending on whether a given project is complete or not I would like it to use either the “StartDate” or “EndDate” as the reference for a particular row. So to break it down further, this is what I’m hoping to achieve: For PROJECTS where Complete = “Yes”, reference “EndDate” for the purpose of sorting. For PROJECTS where Complete = “No”, reference “StartDate” for the purpose of sorting. So, if I were to sort the above table following these rules, the output would be: PROJECTS ContactName StartDate EndDate Complete 1 Eric 2006-10-01 2008-11-15* Yes 2 Mitch 2009-02-13* 2011-04-23 No 3 Kyle 2009-03-07* 2012-07-08 No 4 Mike 2007-05-04 2009-03-30* Yes *I’ve put a star next to the date that should be used for the sort in the table above. Classic ASP to WCF using the Service Moniker

I am trying to consume a WCF logging service from classic ASP without deploy a Com wrapper. I found a method of doing so here. Here is the vb script, simplified. Failed to do mex retrieval:Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: net.pipe://localhost/Services/Logging/LoggingManager/Mex.. Only when running through ASP does it fail, a sample VBS file on the same machine using the same code works fine. I think it may be permission related, but don't know where to begin. Anyone have any ideas? EDIT - let me clarify that the WCF host is a windows service running as NETWORK SERVICE. If this belongs on server fault, a moderator can move it. I have an account there as well.

My code is to update a record if it already exists in database else insert as a new record. Exception Handling in ASP.NET MVC and Ajax - [HandleException] filter

All, I'm learning MVC and using it for a business app (MVC 1.0). I'm really struggling to get my head around exception handling. I've spent a lot of time on the web but not found anything along the lines of what I'm after. We currently use a filter attribute that implements IExceptionFilter. We decorate a base controller class with this so all server side exceptions are nicely routed to an exception page that displays the error and performs logging. I've started to use AJAX calls that return JSON data but when the server side implementation throws an error, the filter is fired but the page does not redirect to the Error page - it just stays on the page that called the AJAX method. Is there any way to force the redirect on the server (e.g. a ASP.NET Server.Transfer or redirect?) I've read that I must return a JSON object (wrapping the .NET Exception) and then redirect on the client, but then I can't guarantee the client will redirect... but then (although I'm probably doing something wrong) the server attempts to redirect but then gets an unauthorised exception (the base controller is secured but the Exception controller is not as it does not inherit from this) Has anybody please got a simple example (.NET and jQuery code). Google Web Toolkit or Microsoft Technology (Silverlight, ASP.NET)

We have a large code base in MFC and VB. A few applications are in .NET. All these applications interoperate with each other on the user's machine and also connect with Unix servers via sockets. Recently we have started discussing a re-write of our applications and possibility of moving a lot of these desktop applications to web (they would run in intranet). A straight forward way is rewritting them in one of the .NET technologies. But a suggestion about using Google Web tookit has popped up and the argument is that it would help creating applications that would run in a browser on both desktop and mobile devices. One of the key problem that I see is that GWT is a large abstraction over Javascript. This will require the team to learn GWT, Javascript, IDEs etc as their experience has been primarily Microsoft technologies and not Java. It would be easier for them to learn .NET technologies instead of GWT. I do not have a depth of GWT and its drawback pittfalls and do not know about a parallel Microsoft Technology that I should investigate. So I would appreciate if people here can share their views or experiences using GWT or equivalent Microsoft technology.

Multi-threaded .NET application blocks during file I/O when protected by Themida

As the title says I have a .NET application that is the GUI which uses multiple threads to perform separate file I/O and notice that the threads occasionally block when the application is protected by Themida. One thread is devoted to reading from serial COM port and another thread is devoted to copying files. What I experience is occasionally when the file copy thread encounters a network delay, it will block the other thread that is reading from the serial port. In addition to slow network (which can be transient), I can cause the problem to happen more frequently by making a PathFileExists call to a bad path e.g. PathFileExists("\\\\BadPath\\file.txt"); The COM port reading function will block during the call to ReadFile. This only happens when the application is protected by Themida. I have tried under WinXP, Win7, and Server 2012. In a streamlined test project, if I replace the .NET application with a MFC unmanaged application and still utilize the same threads I see no issue even when protected with Themida. I have contacted Oreans support and here is their response: The way that a .NET application is protected is very different from a native application. To protect a .NET application, we need to hook most of the file access APIs in order to "cheat" the .NET Framework that the application is protected. I guess that those special hooks (on CreateFile, ReadFile...) are delaying a bit the execution in your application and the problem appears. We did a test making those hooks as light as possible (with minimum code on them) but the problem still appeared in your application. The rest of software protectors that we tried (like Enigma, Molebox...) also use a similar hooking approach as it's the only way to make the .NET packed file to work. If those hooks are not present, the .NET Framework will abort execution as it will see that the original file was tampered (due to all Microsoft checks on .NET files) Those hooks are not present in a native application, that's why it should be working fine on your native application. Oreans support tried other software protectors such as Enigma Protector, Engima VirtualBox, and Molebox and all exhibit the exact same problem. What I have found as a work around is to separate out the file copy logic (where the file exists call is being made) to be performed in a completely separate process. I have experimented with converting the thread functions from unmanaged C++ to VB.NET equivalents (PathFileExists - System.IO.File.Exists and CreateFile/ReadFile - System.IO.Ports.SerialPort.Open/Read) and still see the same serial port read blocked when the file check or copy call is delayed. I have also tried setting the ReadFile to work asynchronously but that had no effect. I believe I am dealing with some low-level windows layer that no matter the language it exhibits a block on a shared resource -- and only when the application is executing under a single .NET process protected by Themida which evidently installs some hooks to allow .NET execution. At this time converting the entire application away from .NET is not an option. Nor is separating out the file copy logic to a separate task. I am wondering if anyone else has more knowledge of how a file operation can block another thread reading from a system port. When running the themida protected exe, you can see when the FileThread counter pauses (executing the File.Exists call) while the ReadThread counter also pauses. When running non-protected visual studio output exe, the ReadThread counter does not pause which is how we expect it to function. Thanks!

Dynamically created controls and the ASP.NET page lifecycle

I'm working on an ASP.NET project in which the vast majority of the forms are generated dynamically at run time (form definitions are stored in a DB for customizability). Therefore, I have to dynamically create and add my controls to the Page every time OnLoad fires, regardless of IsPostBack. This has been working just fine and .NET takes care of managing ViewState for these controls. protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { base.OnLoad(e); RenderDynamicControls() } private void RenderDynamicControls(){ //1. call service layer to retrieve form definition //2. create and add controls to page container } I have a new requirement in which if a user clicks on a given button (this button is created at design time) the page should be re-rendered in a slightly different way. So in addition to the code that executes in OnLoad (i.e. RenderDynamicControls()), I have this code: protected void MyButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { RenderDynamicControlsALittleDifferently() } private void RenderDynamicControlsALittleDifferently() (){ //1. clear all controls from the page container added in RenderDynamicControls() //2. call service layer to retrieve form definition //3. create and add controls to page container } My question is, is this really the only way to accomplish what I'm after? It seems beyond hacky to effectively render the form twice simply to respond to a button click. I gather from my research that this is simply how the page-lifecycle works in ASP.NET: Namely, that OnLoad must fire on every Postback before child events are invoked. Still, it's worthwhile to check with the SO community before having to drink the kool-aid. On a related note, once I get this feature completed, I'm planning on throwing an UpdatePanel on the page to perform the page updates via Ajax. Any code/advice that make that transition easier would be much appreciated. Thanks

ASP.NET Webforms site using HTTPCookie with 100 year timeout times out after 20 minutes

I have a site that is using Forms Auth. The client does not want the site session to expire at all for users. This solution was working for a while on our servers - now it's back. The problem doesn't occur on my local dev box running Cassini in VS2008. Any ideas on how to fix this?

FOSS ASP.Net Session Replication Solution?

I've been searching (with little success) for a free/opensource session clustering and replication solution for asp.net. I've run across the usual suspects (indexus sharedcache, memcached), however, each has some limitations. Indexus - Very immature, stubbed session interface implementation. Its otherwise a great caching solution, though. Memcached - Little replication/failover support without going to a db backend. Several SF.Net projects - All aborted in the early stages... nothing that appears to have any traction, and one which seems to have gone all commercial. Microsoft Velocity - Not OSS, but seems nice. Unfortunately, I didn't see where CTP1 supported failover, and there is no clear roadmap for this one. I fear that this one could fall off into the ether like many other MS dev projects. I am fairly used to the Java world where it is kind of taken for granted that many solutions to problems such as this will be available from the FOSS world. Are there any suitable alternatives available on the .Net world?
