  • How does one modify the thread scheduling behavior when using Threading Building Blocks (TBB)?

    - by J Teller
Does anyone know how to modify the thread scheduling (specifically affinity) when using TBB? Doing a high level analysis on a simple parallel-for application, it seems like TBB is specifying the underlying threads' affinity in a way that reduces performance. Specifically, the cores I'm running on have hyper-threading enabled, and it looks like TBB is affinitizing threads to the same core even if there is a different core left completely unloaded. FWIW, I realize it's likely that TBB is doing the "right thing" and that changing the threads' affinity will only reduce performance. I'd just like to experiment with it to see if that's really the case.

  • PHP APC - Why is loading cached array op codes slow?

    - by Aaron Kreider
I'm using APC to reduce my loading time for my PHP files. My files load very fast, except for one file where I define more than 100 arrays. This 270 kb file takes 200 ms to load. The rest of the files are full of objects, methods, and functions. I'm wondering: does OP code caching not work as well for arrays? My APC cache should be big enough to handle all of my classes. Currently 40% of my cache is free. My hit rate is 99%. apc.shm_size=32 M apc.max_file_size = 1M apc.shm_segments= 1 APC 3.1.6 I'm using PHP 5.2, Apache 2, and Windows Vista.

  • AES acceleration for Java

    - by chris_l
I want to encrypt/decrypt lots of small (2-10kB) pieces of data. The performance is ok for now: On a Core2Duo, I get about 90 MBytes/s AES256 (when using 2 threads). But I may need to improve that in the future - or at least reduce the impact on the CPU. Is it possible to use dedicated AES encryption hardware with Java (using JCE, or maybe a different API)? Would Java take advantage of special CPU features (SSE5?!), if I get a better CPU? Or are there faster JCE providers? (I tried SunJCE and BouncyCastle - no big difference.) Other possiblilities?

  • Changing tabs in android

    - by Pavel
Hi guys. Can someone please tell me how to change tab by clicking on element INSIDE the tab? I already tried it with global data. The code looks like this: public class Tabs extends TabActivity { int tabNumber = 0; private TabHost tabHost; int returnedTabNumber = 0; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); Resources res = getResources(); // Resource object to get Drawables tabHost = getTabHost(); // The activity TabHost TabHost.TabSpec spec; // Resusable TabSpec for each tab Intent intent; // Reusable Intent for each tab // Create an Intent to launch an Activity for the tab (to be reused) intent = new Intent().setClass(this, Tribocracy.class); // Initialize a TabSpec for each tab and add it to the TabHost spec = tabHost.newTabSpec("map").setIndicator("Map", res.getDrawable(R.drawable.ic_tab_artists)) .setContent(intent); tabHost.addTab(spec); // Do the same for the other tabs intent = new Intent().setClass(this, Areas.class); spec = tabHost.newTabSpec("areas").setIndicator("Areas", res.getDrawable(R.drawable.ic_tab_albums)) .setContent(intent); tabHost.addTab(spec); // Do the same for the other tabs intent = new Intent().setClass(this, Settings.class); spec = tabHost.newTabSpec("settings").setIndicator("Settings", res.getDrawable(R.drawable.ic_tab_albums)) .setContent(intent); tabHost.addTab(spec); tabHost.setCurrentTab(tabNumber); } protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); GlobalData globalData = ((GlobalData)getApplicationContext()); returnedTabNumber = globalData.getTabNumber(); tabHost.setCurrentTab(returnedTabNumber); } } The global adapter looks like this: public class GlobalData extends Application { //---------------------------------------------------- private int Point1; //define the vars here private int Point2; //define the vars here private int Point3; //define the vars here private int Point4; //define the vars here private int Point5; //define the vars here private int Point6; //define the vars here private int tabNumber; public int getTabNumber() //getter of the value { return tabNumber; } public int setTabNumber(int number) //setter of the value { tabNumber = number; return tabNumber; } } Now when I'm trying to change tab in my ListActivity tab by clicking on one of the items it doesn't do anything and stays on the ListActivity tab. Perhaps I shouldn't use onResume() here. Basically I want to go to first tab when I click on one of the items in the list. Please help!

  • jquery buttons icons for dialog

    - by khinester
    I have this code: $(function() { var mainButtons = [ {text: "Invite" , 'class': 'invite-button' , click: function() { // get list of members alert('Invite was clicked...'); } } // end Invite button , {text: "Options" , 'class': 'options-button' , click: function() { alert('Options...'); } } // end Options button ] // end mainButtons , commentButtons = [ {text: "Clear" , 'class': 'clear-button' , click: function() { $('#comment').val('').focus().select(); } } // end Clear button , {text: "Post comment" , 'class': 'post-comment-button' , click: function() { alert('send comment...'); } } // end Post comment ] // end commentButtons $( "#form" ).dialog({ autoOpen: false , height: 465 , width: 700 , modal: true , position: ['center', 35] , buttons: mainButtons }); $( "#user-form" ) .button() .click(function() { $(this).effect("transfer",{ to: $("#form") }, 1500); $( "#form" ).dialog( "open" ); $( ".invite-button" ).button({ icons: {primary:'ui-icon-person',secondary:'ui-icon-triangle-1-s'} }); $( ".options-button" ).button({ icons: {primary:'ui-icon-gear'} }); }); // Add comment... $("#comment, .comment").click(function(){ $('#comment').focus().select(); $("#form").dialog({buttons: commentButtons}); $( ".post-comment-button" ).button({ icons: {primary:'ui-icon-comment'} }); $( ".clear-button" ).button({ icons: {primary:'ui-icon-refresh'} }); }); //Add comment // Bind back the Invite, Options buttons $(".files, .email, .event, .map").click(function(){ $("#form").dialog({buttons: mainButtons}); $( ".invite-button" ).button({ icons: {primary:'ui-icon-person',secondary:'ui-icon-triangle-1-s'} }); $( ".options-button" ).button({ icons: {primary:'ui-icon-gear'} }); }); // Tabs $( "#tabs" ).tabs(); $( ".tabs-bottom .ui-tabs-nav, .ui-tabs-nav > *" ) .removeClass( "ui-widget-header" ) .addClass( "ui-corner-bottom" ); }); ? What is the right way to add the button icons? As in my code I had to add it two times, once: $( "#user-form" ) .button() .click(function() { $(this).effect("transfer",{ to: $("#form") }, 1500); $( "#form" ).dialog( "open" ); ... and $(".files, .email, .event, .map").click(function(){ ... Could this code be improved further? I don't seem to be able to get the "transfer" effect to work correctly in a modal. I added: , close: function() { $(this).effect("transfer",{ to: $("#user-form") }, 1500); } to the $( "#form" ).dialog({ How would you go about in getting the "transfer" to work nicely when you open and close the dialog box?

    - by anandhinaveen
Hello, I am using richfaces dropDownMenu component which contains a set of rich menuItems. When the menu items are displayed, a extra space is displayed before the lablel for each of the menu item. But I have a requirement of not displaying the space before the labels and to change the color. I used the css to reduce the space: .rich-menu-item-icon img { width: 0px; } .rich-menu-group-icon img { width: 0px; } but, i need to change the color in that place.

  • how to refactor user-permission system?

    - by John
Sorry for lengthy question. I can't tell if this should be a programming question or a project management question. Any advice will help. I inherited a reasonably large web project (1 year old) from a solo freelancer who architected it then abandoned it. The project was a mess, but I cleaned up what I could, and now the system is more maintainable. I need suggestions on how to extend the user-permission system. As it is now, the database has a t_user table with the column t_user.membership_type. Currently, there are 4 membership types with the following properties: 3 of the membership types are almost functionally the same, except for the different monthly fees each must pay 1 of the membership type is a "fake-user" type which has limited access ( different business logic also applies) With regards to the fake-user type, if you look in the system's business logic files, you will see a lot of hard-coded IF statements that do something like if (fake-user) { // do something } else { // a paid member of type 1,2 or 3 // proceed normally } My client asked me to add 3 more membership types to the system, each of them with unique features to be implemented this month, and substantive "to-be-determined" features next month. My first reaction is that I need to refactor the user-permission system. But it concerns me that I don't have enough information on the "to-be-determined" membership type features for next month. Refactoring the user-permission system will take a substantive amount of time. I don't want to refactor something and throw it out the following month. I get substantive feature requests on a monthly basis that come out of the blue. There is no project road map. I've asked my client to provide me with a roadmap of what they intend to do with the new membership types, but their answer is along the lines of "We just want to do [feature here] this month. We'll think of something new next month." So questions that come to mind are: 1) Is it dangerous for me to refactor the user permission system not knowing what membership type features exist beyond a month from now? 2) Should I refactor the user permission system regardless? Or just continue adding IF statements as needed in all my controller files? Or can you recommend a different approach to user permission systems? Maybe role-based ? 3) Should this project have a road map? For a 1 year old project like mine, how far into the future should this roadmap project? 4) Any general advice on the best way to add 3 new membership types?

  • How to implement table-per-concrete-type strategy using entity framework

    - by SDReyes
Hello Guys! I'm mapping a set of tables that share a common set of fields: So as you can see I'm using a table-per-concrete-type strategy to map the inheritance. But... I have not could to relate them to an abstract type containing these common properties. It's possible to do it using EF? BONUS: The only non documented Entity Data Model Mapping Scenario is Table-per-concrete-type inheritance http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc716779.aspx : P

  • Hibernate and default values

    - by Schildmeijer
Is it possible to use annotations to map a default value for a column? eg. I have a column named 'date' which is supposed to be '0000-00-00 00:00:00' if not date is explicitly given. I know I can add this to the ctor of the Entity. But then the default behavior will no be present in my database backend. (eg. Default column in mysql)

  • foreign key constraints on primary key columns - issues ?

    - by zzzeek
What are the pros/cons from a performance/indexing/data management perspective of creating a one-to-one relationship between tables using the primary key on the child as foreign key, versus a pure surrogate primary key on the child? The first approach seems to reduce redundancy and nicely constrains the one-to-one implicitly, while the second approach seems to be favored by DBAs, even though it creates a second index: create table parent ( id integer primary key, data varchar(50) ) create table child ( id integer primary key references parent(id), data varchar(50) ) pure surrogate key: create table parent ( id integer primary key, data varchar(50) ) create table child ( id integer primary key, parent_id integer unique references parent(id), data varchar(50) ) the platforms of interest here are Postgresql, Microsoft SQL Server.

  • How to create javascript object from form elements using jQuery

    - by ob
    I'd like to be able to create a javascript object from my html form and am wondering if there's a good way to do this using jquery. I guess what i'm looking for is something similar to $.serialize, but which would result in a map instead of a string. <form> <input type="text" name="foo1" value="bar1" /> <input type="text" name="foo2" value="bar2" /> </form> desired result: { foo1:"bar1", foo2:"bar2" }

  • Uploadify and Image Compression

    - by Ilya Biryukov
Hi, I am using Uploadify on one of my client's web sites to allow them to upload a large amount of pictures at once to their photo gallery. I am seeing issues lately. They seem to upload large photographs (3 MB and above). I am wondering, is it possible to compress (reduce their size) on the client side, instead of doing it on the server (just like facebook does it). I know I could easily do it on the server, but I am working on another project right now, where I am expecting a large flow of photo uploads. It would require significant amount of CPU time to process them all. So I thought, I'd ask about the client side processing. Thanks.

  • Tile Collision Question

    - by Alu
Hey guys, I'm working on tile collision. Currently, I just draw the tile map the normal way (two for loops) and there is no scrolling. Right now, to check if my player is over a tile, I use tileX = (int)person1v.X / 16; tileY = (int)person1v.Y / 16; However, I want to detect collision before I hit the tile so it could act as a wall. How do I detect collision before even making the move?

  • Script Speed vs Memory Usage

    - by Doug Neiner
I am working on an image generation script in PHP and have gotten it working two ways. One way is slow but uses a limited amount of memory, the second is much faster, but uses 6x the memory . There is no leakage in either script (as far as I can tell). In a limited benchmark, here is how they performed: -------------------------------------------- METHOD | TOTAL TIME | PEAK MEMORY | IMAGES -------------------------------------------- One | 65.626 | 540,036 | 200 Two | 20.207 | 3,269,600 | 200 -------------------------------------------- And here is the average of the previous numbers (if you don't want to do your own math): -------------------------------------------- METHOD | TOTAL TIME | PEAK MEMORY | IMAGES -------------------------------------------- One | 0.328 | 540,036 | 1 Two | 0.101 | 3,269,600 | 1 -------------------------------------------- Which method should I use and why? I anticipate this being used by a high volume of users, with each user making 10-20 requests to this script during a normal visit. I am leaning toward the faster method because though it uses more memory, it is for a 1/3 of the time and would reduce the number of concurrent requests.

  • Google App Engine Database Index

    - by fjsj
I need to store a undirected graph in a Google App Engine database. For optimization purposes, I am thinking to use database indexes. Using Google App Engine, is there any way to define the columns of a database table to create its index? I will need some optimization, since my app uses this stored undirected graph on a content-based filtering for item recommendation. Also, the recommender algorithm updates the weights of some graph's edges. If it is not possible to use database indexes, please suggest another method to reduce query time for the graph table. I believe my algorithm does more data retrieval operations from graph table than write operations. PS: I am using Python.

  • Optimizing a fluid grid layout

    - by user1815176
I recently just added a grid layout, but I can't figure out how to make my links work. The grid that I used is the 1140 one at http://cssgrid.net/. I studied the source code of that website, and tried to make my page like theirs, but when I put everything in it made mine worse, and the grid didn't even work. This is how my website is supposed to look http://spencedesign.netau.net/singaporehome.html and this is how it does http://spencedesign.netau.net/home.html And when you reduce the size, it doesn't look like it's supposed to. When you minimize it I want the pictures(links) to be two per row, then one per row depending on how small the page is. I also want the quote to turn into different rows when it is too small for it. But I can't figure out how to make the page look normal regularly let alone make it look good with a smaller browser. Thanks!
