• Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011. • Optimising bare-metal hypervisor installation

  what is the best way to install a bare metal hypervisor (i.e. to host multiple VM's)? I spoke to a friend and he is using a HP server to host all his VMs with VMware ESXi, but he installed the VMWARE esxi software on a flash card. He can then use his full hard disk capacity from each drive for the VMs. Is this a pretty standard setup when configuring a bare-metal hypervisor? How do you guys do it, and what is best?

  We are at the beginning of the process to get multilingual versions of a website. We will be using subfolders working off the core domain (eg mydomain.com/fr/), set the geotargeting at webmaster tools and set hreflang attribute. I would really appreciate your help with a couple of questions. 1/Portuguese: we will have a Portuguese language version of the site. Our intention is to use this to cover users in both Portugal AND Brazil. ie, we are not going to do separate folders mydomain.com/pt/ and mydomain.com/br/ Can I use 2 hreflang attributes for this language version to tell Google it covers Brazil AND Portugal? What country code to use for this subfolder? 2/Switzerland Does anyone have best practice advice how to do this? One one hand, the subfolder should be mydomain.com/ch/ but as Switzerland covers 2 language possibilities (French AND German) - what to do? thanks

  I'm having a bad .htaccess day! I want a user to be able to type the URL mysite.com/about instead of mysite.com/about.html On .htaccess file I have: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /$1.html [NC,L] But this simply does not work? I will add though that if i try this further inside the site e.g. mysite.com/pages/contact Works perfectly whether I have the above code in the .htaccess or not What am I doing wrong?

  I am running MATLAB R2013b. Under Unity, the built-in editor of MATLAB shows empty tooltips, as seen here: http://imgur.com/4VSq6i8 Under xfce the tooltips are showing up just fine. My system: Ubuntu 14.04, Intel i7 4770K. The question has already been posted somewhere else (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/21915939/matlab-code-analyzer-produces-empty-tooltips, http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/116987-empty-tooltips-in-code-analyzer ), but I think this is a Unity-specific problem.   In my setup there exist user1, ..., userN@example.com. Mail for example.com is handled by Exchange 2010 and all the users user Outlook 2010. There also exists a Standard Distribution list named office@example.com. Is it possible to have some of the users being able to send email with office@example.com as the sender address? Can the sender's GECOS be different too when this happens so that the recipient sees "Offices of Example.com" instead of "User Name X"? Sometimes the secretaries need to send stuff as "the office" and not as theirselves ...

• External USB HD with -optional- mains?

  Hi, I'm Christmas-present-buying, and I'd appreciate recommendations for a USB HD with an optional mains power input. I've hunted, but can't find all the information I want (partially due to sketchy product specifications). Background: This is for a digital TV which I do not own, and so I'd like to get it correct first time. The TV has a USB port to allow recording straight to disk, but the manuals don't say how much power can be drawn through the USB port. The manual's instructions state, possibly generically, to plug the drive in before connecting to the TV. Ideally I'd like a small (2.5"?) drive which can draw power over USB, with an mains power input if it turns out the USB port on the TV doesn't offer enough juice. The ideal is to use one cable, two max. A powered USB hub would introduce too much clutter. I've spotted that the LaCie Petit drives have what appears to be an additional power input, but I'm not even sure from the specs what that is. And the device doesn't ship with a mains adapter. Suggestions?

• Legal Web Fonts & Licensing

  So I'm a little confused in regards to legality of using fonts for web. Often from designers I get a PSD file and it uses a special font, and the font is supplied. However attempting to convert the font using: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface/generator Ends up with a message saying it's blocked by Adobe. Not only that sometimes if the font can be converted, it often looks like crap when viewed in a browser. I assume that the generator is primarily for people to convert their own fonts, but if you purchase the use of a font then you can only use it for Web if the terms allows you to? The fonts used in PSD's are often Adobe Fonts, I can't find anything that suggests I can convert those and use them on the web. So I'm wondering if anyone knows the legal rights around using Photoshop supplied fonts on the web? In addition I'm wondering what resources are available (free/paid) that provide fonts that can be used on the web. • What Ranking Factors Are Used For International Search?

  Google.com vs Google.ca vs Google.co.uk (etc) all rank their results differently. The intention is to return more locally-relevant content. What factors, other than the ones below, are used to determine local relevancy? I already know the TLD (.com, .ca, etc) and likely the server IP address is used but there has to be more as this would not explain some search results I noticed this week. Particularly, I see a US-based site ranking #3 for some keywords on Google.com, ranking #5 on Google.ca and not ranking within the first pages on Google.co.uk. On Google.com it outranks a Australian site which outranks it on Google.ca. The site itself is relevant for all English-speaking locations and it being outranked by sites from different regions on different Google TLDs (but not ones from the same region as the TLD).

  I run a blog under mywebsite.com/blog. This is a self-hosted MovableType installation. Now I want to get rid of the blog installation and use a hosted (Wordpress.com) solution instead. The blog is only a minor part of my website, but before making this change I want to make sure that I don't loose SEO value. What is the best option to make this change? Bonus question: how big is the SEO-impact of a subdirectory (mywebsite.com/news) to the PageRank of the main domain (mywebsite.com)?

• Original sender is not correctly identified when spam is forwarded

  I have a forwarding rule with Postfix that forwards all messages to my main email address. When a spam message is sent to one of my emails, it is forwarded but the sender is shown as being the forwarding domain, not the spammer's domain. Real example: mywebsite.com is hosted on Linode. [email protected] sends an email to info@mywebsite.com the mail is forwarded to myemail@anotherwebsite.com my email hosting (anotherwebsite.com) sees it's spam and sends a message to abuse@linode.com and Linode reports a TOS violation. I have modified my postfix settings so I now use RBL, but if a message goes through, it may happen again. How can I prevent this to happen again? Is there some settings to change on Postfix so the original sender is correctly identified? Thanks Stephan

  In my personal opinion I believe the waterfall method is one of the worst methodologies to use when developing larger systems because it leaves is no room for mistakes. As the name implies the waterfall methodology does not allow  for projects to go back up stream to recover from design errors, missing and/or limited requirements. In addition, hidden bugs are not usually found until the testing phase. This can prove to be very costly and time consuming to the developer and the client. According to NCycles.com, the waterfall methodology structures a project into separate stages with defined deliverables from each phase. • Mount exFAT partition in virtual guest machine

  I have a real Ubuntu 12.10 installation being virtualized under a Windows 8 host, by using the VBoxManage.exe internalcommands createrawvmdk method. I'm trying to mount an exFAT partition into the virtualized machine (which is the partition of shared work files), but even though I have fuse-exfat installed, and the partition is perfectly mountable while booting entirely into Ubuntu, I can't mount it while virtualizing it. 1- If I make a full vmdk image of the HDD, including all partitions, Ubuntu 12.10 "sees" the partition, and trying to mount it throws this error: Image: http://i.stack.imgur.com/AyUSn.png 2- If I make a machine with only the linux partitions, + the exFAT partition. • Move site to new domain divided by language across subdomains

  I managed to find a nice domain for a fairly fledgling site of mine that actually hasn't been parked by scumbag squatters. Given the upcoming move I'm thinking I'd take the opportunity to split the content across subdomains according to language, much like wikipedia for example: current: www.old-domain.com/en/subject # English www.old-domain.com/subjecto # Spanish (default so not locale in url) proposed en.new-domain.com/subject es.new-domain.com/subjecto The advantage of doing this is a fairly competitive keyword such that I may wish to put a copy of my application on a Spanish slice in order to gain a few serp's. Also pure vanity. Google's webmaster tools allows me to move to the new domain and I can add the root domain and the subdomains but forward to only one. I'll 301 from the old domain appropriately but is there anything I should know about webmaster tools in this respect where effectively I'm moving to two addresses? (Feel free to dissuade me from doing this if it's a bad idea in comments.)

• New way of integrating Openfeint in Cocos2d-x 0.12.0

  I am trying to implement OpenFeint for Android in my cocos2d-x project. My approach so far has been creating a button that calls a static java method in class Bridge using jnihelper functions (jnihelper only accepts statics). Bridge has one singleton attribute of type OFAndroid, that is the class dynamically calling the Openfeint Api methods, and every method in the bridge just forwards it to the OFAndroid object. What I am trying to do now is to initialize the openfeint libraries in the main java class that is the one calling the static C++ libraries. My problem right now is that the initializing function void com.openfeint.api.OpenFeint.initialize(Context ctx, OpenFeintSettings settings, OpenFeintDelegate delegate) is not accepting the context parameter that I am giving him, which is a "this" reference to the main class. Main class extends from Cocos2dxActivity but I don't have any other that extends from Application. Any suggestions on fixing it or how to improve the architecture? EDIT: I am trying a new solution. Make the bridge class into an Application child, is called from Main object, initializes OpenFeint when created and it can call the OpenFeint functions instead of needing an additional class.   I've created a kickstart script to install CentOS 5.5 (32bit) in a fully automated way. The DNS/DHCP setup correctly gives the system the right hostname in both the forward and reverse lookups. dig node4.mydomain.com. +short 10.10.10.64 dig -x 10.10.10.64 +short node4.mydomain.com. In the state the installed system is right after the installation completed is as follows: cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes GATEWAY=10.10.10.1 HOSTNAME=node4.mydomain.com echo ${HOSTNAME} node4.mydomain.com cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.10.10.64 node4 My problem is that this automatically generated hosts file is slightly different from the way I want it (or better: the way Hadoop wants it). The last line should look like this: 10.10.10.64 node4.mydomain.com node4 What do I modify where to fix this? Thanks.
