  • Java - encrypt / decrypt user name and password from a configuration file

    We are busy developing a Java web service for a client. There are two possible choices: Store the encrypted user name / password on the web service client. Read from a config. file on the client side, decrypt and send. Store the encrypted user name / password on the web server. Read from a config. file on the web server, decrypt and use in the web service. The user name / password is used by the web service to access a third-party application. The client already has classes that provide this functionality but this approach involves sending the user name / password in the clear (albeit within the intranet). They would prefer storing the info. within the web service but don't really want to pay for something they already have. (Security is not a big consideration because it's only within their intranet). So we need something quick and easy in Java. Any recommendations? The server is Tomkat 5.5. The web service is Axis2. What encrypt / decrypt package should we use? What about a key store? What configuration mechanism should we use? Will this be easy to deploy?

I was wondering how could I pass a value to a Java Method using ANT. Non of these classes have Main methods and will not have any main. Due to this I was unable to use it as a java system properties.   • Why does the Java Collections Framework offer two different ways to sort?

    If I have a list of elements I would like to sort, Java offers two ways to go about this. For example, lets say I have a list of Movie objects and I’d like to sort them by title. One way I could do this is by calling the one-argument version of the static java.util.Collections.sort( ) method with my movie list as the single argument. So I would call Collections.sort(myMovieList). In order for this to work, the Movie class would have to be declared to implement the java.lang.Comparable interface, and the required method compareTo( ) would have to be implemented inside this class. Another way to sort is by calling the two-argument version of the static java.util.Collections.sort( ) method with the movie list and a java.util.Comparator object as it’s arguments. I would call Collections.sort(myMovieList, titleComparator). In this case, the Movie class wouldn’t implement the Comparable interface. Instead, inside the main class that builds and maintains the movie list itself, I would create an inner class that implements the java.util.Comparator interface, and implement the one required method compare( ). Then I'd create an instance of this class and call the two-argument version of sort( ). The benefit of this second method is you can create an unlimited number of these inner class Comparators, so you can sort a list of objects in different ways. In the example above, you could have another Comparator to sort by the year a movie was made, for example. My question is, why bother to learn both ways to sort in Java, when the two-argument version of Collections.sort( ) does everything the first one-argument version does, but with the added benefit of being able to sort the list’s elements based on several different criteria? It would be one less thing to have to keep in your mind while coding. You’d have one basic mechanism of sorting lists in Java to know.

    So I have a Tree<E> class where E is the datatype held and organized by the tree. I'd like to iterate through the Tree like this, or in a way similar to this: 1. Tree<String> tree=new Tree<String>(); 2. ...add some nodes... 3. for (String s : tree) 4. System.out.println(s); It gives me an error on line 3 though. Incompatible types required: java.lang.String found: java.lang.Object The following works fine and as expected though, performing a proper in-order traversal of the tree and printing each node out as it should: for (TreeIterator<String> i = tree.iterator(); i.hasNext(); ) System.out.println(i.next()); Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Do you need to see more of the code?

    I've ran through several examples over the web, and found that every single time I need something from the DB, I should write the following code: try { // Step 1: Load the JDBC driver. "); System.err.println(e.getMessage()); } It's very annoying to put up this code every time I want something from the DB, so the question is - is there a way to only once connect entirely all my app to the DB somehow at the very start point, avoiding copy-pasting mentioned code, and then be able to do everything I want with DB? I've quickly looked through NetBeans's Project menu, but didn't find any clue on how to configurate a persistent connection to a selected DB. If it's important, i'm writing a purely desktop app, i.e. using Java EE. Also, it's worth mentioning that I'm a kinda beginner in Java.

    This is not a pure java question and can also be related to HTML I've written a java servlet that queries a database table and shows the result as a html table. The user can also ask to receive the result as an Excel sheet. Im creating the Excel sheet by printing the same html table, but with the content-type of "application/vnd.ms-excel". The Excel file is created fine. The problem is that the tables may contain non-english data so I want to use a UTF-8 encoding. PrintWriter out = response.getWriter(); response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel:ISO-8859-1"); //response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel:UTF-8"); response.setHeader("cache-control", "no-cache"); response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=file.xls"); out.print(src); out.flush(); The non-english characters appear as garbage (áéíóú) Also I tried converting to bytes from String byte[] arrByte = src.getBytes("ISO-8859-1"); String result = new String(arrByte, "UTF-8"); But I Still getting garbage, What can I do?.   • Help with java executors: wait for task termination.

    I need to submit a number of task and then wait for them until all results are available. Each of them adds a String to a Vector (that is synchronized by default). Then I need to start a new task for each result in the Vector but I need to do this only when all the previous tasks have stopped doing their job. I want to use Java Executor, in particular I tried using Executors.newFixedThreadPool(100) in order to use a fixed number of thread (I have a variable number of task that can be 10 or 500) but I'm new with executors and I don't know how to wait for task termination. This is something like a pseudocode of what my program needs to do: EecutorService e = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(100); while(true){ /*do something*/ for(...){ <start task> } <wait for all task termination> for each String in result{ <start task> } <wait for all task termination> } I can't do a e.shutdown because I'm in a while(true) and I need to reuse the executorService... Can you help me? Can you suggest me a guide/book about java executors??

I did some tests executing the code of my "show" method from a QMetaObject::invokeMethod stuff using Qt::QueuedConnection but nothing works properly.   • Java hangs when trying to close a ProcessBuilder OutputStream

    I have the following Java code to start a ProcessBuilder, open an OutputStream, have the process write a string to an OutputStream, and then close the OutputStream. The whole thing hangs indefinitely when I try to close the OutputStream. This only happens on Windows, never on Mac or Linux. Some of the related questions seem to be close to the same problem I'm having, but I haven't been able to figure out how to apply the answers to my problem, as I am a relative newbie with Java. Here is the code. You can see I have put in a lot of println statements to try to isolate the problem. We tried to avoid those pitfalls in the code but it likely we still have unknown mistakes left in our code.   • java applet stops running on exceptions

    I've developed a simple applet that imports an image from the clipboard. When i run the class file from NetBeans, everything works fine. But when i try to run it as an applet ... it gives me lots of errors in the java console and does not run ... - The applet is signed - There is a static method in one class, called getImageFromClipboard(). When the applet runs, it calls this method. - getImageFromClipboard() method has a try-catch block and suppresses all errors. It simply returns either a BufferedImage or null. - When applet runs, it does some visual adjustments before calling getImageFromClipboard() Now the scenario is as follows: the class from netbeans runs, fails to import the image and adjusts the interface accordingly (displays an error in a label) But when i run it in a browser, java console is filled with errors and nothing after the getImageFromClipboard() line works. Although the applet itself loads and does everything it's supposed do do before importing the image. So why am i getting errors if i accept the certificate and all of the possible errors are in try-catch blocks? None of this code should throw any exceptions. Any ideas why this is happening? Or do you need to see the errors to tell? UPDATE I've managed to find out the problem myself. The class that i'm using is not in the jar file :( How do i add it in? I'm using "add jar folder" in netbeans on the libraries package to import it but it does not seem to get copied to the jar.

    We are working to reduce the latency and increase the performance of a process written in Java that consumes data (xml strings) from a socket via the readLine() method of the BufferedReader class. The data is delimited by the end of line separater (\n), and each line can be of a variable length (6KBits - 32KBits). Our code looks like: Socket sock = connection; InputStream in = sock.getInputStream(); BufferedReader inputReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in)); ... do { String input = inputReader.readLine(); // Executor call to parse the input thread in a seperate thread }while(true) So I have a couple of questions: Will the inputReader.readLine() method return as soon as it hits the \n character or will it wait till the buffer is full? Is there a faster of picking up data from the socket than using a BufferedReader? What happens when the size of the input string is smaller than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? What happens when the size of the input string is bigger than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? I am getting to grips (slowly) with Java's IO libraries, so any pointers are much appreciated.     Hi guys, I want to read XML data using XPath in Java, so for the information I have gathered I am not able to parse XML according to my requirement. here is what I want to do: Get XML file from online via its URL, then use XPath to parse it, I want to create two methods in it.   • Running commands over ssh with Java

    Scenerio: I'd like to run commands on remote machines from a Java program over ssh (I am using OpenSSH on my development machine). I'd also like to make the ssh connection by passing the password rather than setting up keys as I would with 'expect'. Problem: When trying to do the 'expect' like password login the Process that is created with ProcessBuilder cannot seem to see the password prompt. When running regular non-ssh commands (e.g 'ls') I can get the streams and interact with them just fine. I am combining standard error and standard out into one stream with redirectErrorStream(true); so I am not missing it in standard error...When I run ssh with the '-v' option, I see all of the logging in the stream but I do not see the prompt. This is my first time trying to use ProcessBuilder for something like this. I know it would be easier to use Python, Perl or good ol' expect but my boss wants to utilize what we are trying to get back (remote log files and running scripts) within an existing Java program so I am kind of stuck.   • how do I get eclipse to use a different compiler version for Java?

    It seems like this should be a simple task, with the options in the Preferences menu for different JREs and the ability to set different compiler and build paths per project. However, it also seems to simply not work. For example, I have my JAVA_HOME set to a jre for Java 1.6. It's still not clear to me how Eclipse uses this, but it appears to be defaulting to this and not taking the project overrides. I have also installed Java 1.5, and added a JRE for this in eclipse in the Java-Installed JREs section. In my project, I've set the compiler compliance level to 1.5. In the build path for the project, I've added the System Library for the Java 1.5 JRE. However, I'm getting compile errors for a class that implements PreparedStatement for not implementing abstract methods that only exist in Java 1.6 PreparedStatement. Specifically, the methods setAsciiStream(int, InputStream, long) and setAsciiStream(int, InputStream) Strangely enough, it worked when we were compiling it against Java 1.4, which it was originally written for. We added the JREs for Java 1.4 and referenced that system library in the project, and set the project's compiler level to 1.4, and it works fine. But when I do the same changes to try to point to Java 1.5, it instead uses 1.6. Any ideas why?

    I create a simple webapp using tomcat 6, spring 2.5.6 and maven. The problem is when I boot up tomcat, I am getting the following errors: SEVERE: StandardWrapper.Throwable java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/springframework/ui/ModelMap ... Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.springframework.ui.ModelMap The ModelMap class does exist in spring-2.5.6.jar and spring-context-2.5.6.jar, I also have some other spring jars. All of them are being deployed to tomcat correctly, when I check the application WEB-INF (deployed to tomcat) I found all those jars there! I have only one @Controller that has a @RequestMapping("/home.htm") showForm(ModelMap model) method.   • Getting a lightweight installation of java eclipse.

    Having dealt with yet another stupid eclipse problem, I want to try to get the lightest, most minimal eclipse installation as possible. To be clear, I use eclipse for two things: - Editing Java - Debugging Java Everything else I do through emacs/zsh (editing jsp/xml/js, file management, svn check-in, etc). I have not found any aspect of working in eclipse to do these tasks to be efficient or even reliable, so I do not want plug-ins that relate to it. From the eclipse.org site, this is the lightest install of eclipse that they have, and I don't want any of those things (bugzilla, mylyn, cvs, xml_ui), and have actually had problems with each of them even though I do not use them. So what is the minimal build I can get that will: 1) Ignore svn metadata 2) Includes the full-featured editor (intellisense and type-finding) 3) Includes the full-featured debugger (standard eclipse/jdk) Does not have any extra plug-ins, platforms, or "integrations" with other platforms, specifically, I don't want to deal with plug-ins relating to: Maven, JSP Validation, Javascript editing or validation, CVS or SVN, Mylyn, Spring or Hibernate "natures", app servers like a bundled tomcat/glassfish/etc, J2EE tools, or anything of the like. I do primarily spring/hibernate/web-mvc apps, and have never dealt with an eclipse plug-in that handles any of it gracefully, I can work effectively with my own toolset, but eclipse extensions do nothing but get in the way. I have worked with plain eclipse up to Ganymede, MyEclipse (up to 7.5), and the latest version of Spring-SourceTools, and find that they are all saddled with buggy useless plug-ins (though the combination is always different). Switching to netbeans/intellij is not an option, and my teammates work with svn-controlled .class/.project files, so it pretty much has to be eclipse. Does anyone have any good advice on how I can save a few grey hairs?
