    Hey 'FLow. I have a technical challenge for you regarding an algorithm. Lets say I have this list of days and prices: List<ReservationPrice> prices = new List<ReservationPrice>(); prices.Add(new ReservationPrice { NumberOfDays = 1, Price = 1000 }); prices.Add(new ReservationPrice { NumberOfDays = 2, Price = 1200 }); prices.Add(new ReservationPrice { NumberOfDays = 3, Price = 2500 }); prices.Add(new ReservationPrice { NumberOfDays = 4, Price = 3100 }); prices.Add(new ReservationPrice { NumberOfDays = 7, Price = 4000 }); What I would like to able to do now is: give me the best price from the list based on a number of days. So if ask for 3 days the best price from the list is from child one (1000) and two (1200), but there are of course different combinations you would have to try out at first. How would an algorithm that found the best price from this list look like ? Thank you!

  • Why does a function that takes IEnumerable<interface> not accept IEnumerable<class>?

    Say, for instance, I have a class: public class MyFoo : IMyBar { ... } Then, I would want to use the following code: List<MyFoo> classList = new List<MyFoo>(); classList.Add(new MyFoo(1)); classList.Add(new MyFoo(2)); classList.Add(new MyFoo(3)); List<IMyBar> interfaceList = new List<IMyBar>(classList); But this produces the error: `Argument '1': cannot convert from 'IEnumerable<MyFoo>' to 'IEnumerable<IMyBar>' Why is this? Since MyFoo implements IMyBar, one would expect that an IEnumerable of MyFoo could be treated as an IEnumerable of IMyBar. A mundane real-world example being producing a list of cars, and then being told that it wasn't a list of vehicles. It's only a minor annoyance, but if anyone can shed some light on this, I would be much obliged.

    I thought that compiled queries would perform the same query translation as DataContext. Yet I'm getting a run-time error when I try to use a query with a .Contains method call.     I have some dylibs to load from python with ctypes. I can load libbass.dylib without problem, but I can't load the self-compiled libmp3lame.dylib. Here is the error I get. OSError: dlopen(libmp3lame.dylib, 6): no suitable image found. Did find: libmp3lame.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture Then, I inspect the file type of those libs. Here is the result of libbass.dylib: libbass.dylib: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures libbass.dylib (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 libbass.dylib (for architecture ppc): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc And here is the self-compiled one: libmp3lame.dylib: Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared library x86_64 I did compile the lame library with the install instructions: ./configure make make install I'm new to mac system, here comes the problem: how to build the libmp3lame.dylib so that it supports different architecture I want?   • How should I change my Graph structure (very slow insertion)?

    Hi, This program I'm doing is about a social network, which means there are users and their profiles. The profiles structure is UserProfile. Now, there are various possible Graph implementations and I don't think I'm using the best one. I have a Graph structure and inside, there's a pointer to a linked list of type Vertex. Each Vertex element has a value, a pointer to the next Vertex and a pointer to a linked list of type Edge. Each Edge element has a value (so I can define weights and whatever it's needed), a pointer to the next Edge and a pointer to the Vertex owner. I have a 2 sample files with data to process (in CSV style) and insert into the Graph. The first one is the user data (one user per line); the second one is the user relations (for the graph). The first file is quickly inserted into the graph cause I always insert at the head and there's like ~18000 users. The second file takes ages but I still insert the edges at the head. The file has about ~520000 lines of user relations and takes between 13-15mins to insert into the Graph. I made a quick test and reading the data is pretty quickly, instantaneously really. The problem is in the insertion. This problem exists because I have a Graph implemented with linked lists for the vertices. Every time I need to insert a relation, I need to lookup for 2 vertices, so I can link them together. This is the problem... Doing this for ~520000 relations, takes a while. How should I solve this? Solution 1) Some people recommended me to implement the Graph (the vertices part) as an array instead of a linked list. This way I have direct access to every vertex and the insertion is probably going to drop considerably. But, I don't like the idea of allocating an array with [18000] elements. How practically is this? My sample data has ~18000, but what if I need much less or much more? The linked list approach has that flexibility, I can have whatever size I want as long as there's memory for it. But the array doesn't, how am I going to handle such situation? What are your suggestions? Using linked lists is good for space complexity but bad for time complexity. And using an array is good for time complexity but bad for space complexity. Any thoughts about this solution? Solution 2) This project also demands that I have some sort of data structures that allows quick lookup based on a name index and an ID index. For this I decided to use Hash Tables. My tables are implemented with separate chaining as collision resolution and when a load factor of 0.70 is reach, I normally recreate the table. I base the next table size on this http://planetmath.org/encyclopedia/GoodHashTablePrimes.html. Currently, both Hash Tables hold a pointer to the UserProfile instead of duplication the user profile itself. That would be stupid, changing data would require 3 changes and it's really dumb to do it that way. So I just save the pointer to the UserProfile. The same user profile pointer is also saved as value in each Graph Vertex. So, I have 3 data structures, one Graph and two Hash Tables and every single one of them point to the same exact UserProfile. The Graph structure will serve the purpose of finding the shortest path and stuff like that while the Hash Tables serve as quick index by name and ID. What I'm thinking to solve my Graph problem is to, instead of having the Hash Tables value point to the UserProfile, I point it to the corresponding Vertex. It's still a pointer, no more and no less space is used, I just change what I point to. Like this, I can easily and quickly lookup for each Vertex I need and link them together. This will insert the ~520000 relations pretty quickly. I thought of this solution because I already have the Hash Tables and I need to have them, then, why not take advantage of them for indexing the Graph vertices instead of the user profile? It's basically the same thing, I can still access the UserProfile pretty quickly, just go to the Vertex and then to the UserProfile. But, do you see any cons on this second solution against the first one? Or only pros that overpower the pros and cons on the first solution? Other Solution) If you have any other solution, I'm all ears. But please explain the pros and cons of that solution over the previous 2. I really don't have much time to be wasting with this right now, I need to move on with this project, so, if I'm doing to do such a change, I need to understand exactly what to change and if that's really the way to go. Hopefully no one fell asleep reading this and closed the browser, sorry for the big testament. But I really need to decide what to do about this and I really need to make a change. P.S: When answering my proposed solutions, please enumerate them as I did so I know exactly what are you talking about and don't confuse my self more than I already am.

    I went to an interview today where I was asked to serialize a binary tree. I implemented an array-based approach where the children of node i (numbering in level-order traversal) were at the 2*i index for the left child and 2*i + 1 for the right child. The interviewer seemed more or less pleased, but I'm wondering what serialize means exactly? Does it specifically pertain to flattening the tree for writing to disk, or would serializing a tree also include just turning the tree into a linked list, say. Also, how would we go about flattening the tree into a (doubly) linked list, and then reconstructing it? Can you recreate the exact structure of the tree from the linked list? Thank you/

However the Ocaml compiler/interpreter forces me to use alpha list all the time. So is it wrong to say that, when a function accepts a list as a parameter, the type of that list must always be alpha? Thanks EDIT: the reason why it's inconvenient for me to use alpha lists is because i can't compare the head of the alpha list with an integer value due to type-matching complaints

  • Should I trust Redis for data integrity?

    In my current project, I have PostgreSQL as my master DB, and Redis as kind of a slave, e.g., when some user adds another as a friend, first the relationship will be stored in PostgreSQL and then a friend list in Redis will be updated. When some user's friend list is requested, it will be pulled out of Redis instead of PostgreSQL. The question is: when I update the friend list in Redis, should I get a fresh copy outof PostgreSQL, and replace the old list in Redis with the new one or should I keep the old list and simply SADD the userid into the list? The latter is of course best for performance, but intuitively the former does a better job in keep the data integrity? And if something like Celery is used, is the second method worth the risk?

I've never encountered production code that I would consider to be deliberately malicious and evil, so I'm quite curious to see what others have found. The most dangerous code I have ever seen was a stored procedure two linked-servers away from our core production database server. The stored procedure accepted any NVARCHAR(8000) parameter and executed the parameter on the target production server via an double-jump sp_executeSQL command. That is to say, the sp_executeSQL command executed another sp_executeSQL command in order to jump two linked servers. Oh, and the linked server account had sysadmin rights on the target production server.

  • Reading and writing C++ vector to a file

    For some graphics work I need to read in a large amount of data as quickly as possible and would ideally like to directly read and write the data structures to disk. Basically I have a load of 3d models in various file formats which take too long to load so I want to write them out in their "prepared" format as a cache that will load much faster on subsequent runs of the program. Is it safe to do it like this? My worries are around directly reading into the data of the vector? I've removed error checking, hard coded 4 as the size of the int and so on so that i can give a short working example, I know it's bad code, my question really is if it is safe in c++ to read a whole array of structures directly into a vector like this? I believe it to be so, but c++ has so many traps and undefined behavour when you start going low level and dealing directly with raw memory like this.     I'm adding a facebook comment widget to a website. I'm placing this widget in a file that is included on everypage. The navigation is relatively linked so it switches back and forth from http and https. But for some reason the comment widget only shows up if both the src linked file and webpage is secure or both the src linked file and webpage is NOT secure. The widget does not display of the src file is secure and the webpage is not secure. So...     Good day. I'm developing a Windows application and working with Windows Forms; .Net 2.0. I have an issue databinding a generic List of Car Rental Companies to a DataGridView when that list contains (one of its properties) anoother generic List of Car Makes. I also have a UserControl that I need to bind to this [inner] generic list ... Class CarRentalCompany contains: string Name, string Location, List CarMakes Class CarMake contains: string Name, bool isFord, bool isChevy, bool isOther The UserControl has a label for CarMake.Name and 3 checkboxes for each of the booleans of the class. HOw do I make this user control bindable for the class? In my form, I have a DataGridView binded to the CarRentalCompany object. The list CarMakes could be 0 or more items and I can add these as necessary. How do I establish the binding of CarRentalCompanies properly so CarMakes will bind accordingly??   • Wordpress - Plugin - Administration - ?

    Hi, I'm building a Wordpress plugin and I added a menu page which serves for management of "Vendor" entities that are kinda similar to the existing User entities. I have a list page similar to Users List, with Edit button for every record and when I click on the "Edit" button I should be taken to the "Edit Vendor" (which does not have its submenu item in the admin menu) page for that vendor. Everything is stored in the "plugins/wp_vendors" folder. Question: What URL should I use for opening that Edit page? How should a slug be registered for the Edit Vendor page? PS. Vendor List is added to the admin menu with add_menu_page('Vendors', 'Vendors', 8, 'C:\wordpress\wp-content\plugins\wp-vendors\vendors-list.php'); And I can open the List page with http://localhost/wp-admin/admin.php?page=wp-vendors/vendors-list.php Can anyone help me on this?
