How to copy a floppy boot disk?

I have a floppy boot disk and I would like to copy it to preserve it, as a backup. If I have two floppy drives, A and B, how can I copy the disk? Assuming one has two floppy drives Can I simply insert the floppy disk in one of the drives and then an empty floppy disk in the other and issue a simple command like this one. A:\>copy . b: Will this only copy the contents of the current directory and none of the files in subdirectories? Do I have to explicitly specify the option to copy everything? Also, what about the boot information? That won't get copied, right? If one has only one floppy drive... How do you copy a floppy disk if you only have one floppy drive? Do you in fact have to copy its contents to the local hard drive C and then copy that to an empty floppy disk using the same floppy drive? A:\>copy . c:\floppydisk A:\> A:\>c: C:\> C:\>copy floppydisk a: C:\> I'm guessing I will need some type of disk image tool to really copy everything on a bootable floppy disk. Something like the dd command on Linux perhaps? Am I right?

Hungry hungry BIOS: why do I have less than 4 GiB of memory?

But I can't use all of it: ?: cat /proc/meminfo | head -n 1 MemTotal: 3913452 kB Somehow, somewhere, I lost 274 MiB. Where did 6% of my memory go? Now I know the address ranges in DMI are incorrect, because the ACPI memory map reports usable ranges well beyond the ending address of the second memory module: ?: dmesg | grep -E "BIOS-e820: .* usable" [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000000000000-0x000000000009e7ff] usable [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000000100000-0x00000000dee7bfff] usable [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000100000000-0x0000000117ffffff] usable I get pretty much the same info from /proc/iomem (except for the 4 kiB hole 0x000-0xFFF), which also shows that the kernel only accounts for less than 8 MiB. I guess 0x00000000-0x7FFFFFFF is indeed mapped to the first memory module, and 0x80000000-0xDFFFFFFF to part of the second memory module (a bunch of ACPI NVS things live between 0xDEE7C000 and 0xDEF30FFF, and the remaining 16-something MiB of that range are just 'reserved'). I guess the highest 0x18000000 bytes of the second memory module are mapped above the 4 GiB mark. But even then, there are two problems: 128 MiB (0x08000000 bytes, living somewhere between 0xE0000000 and 0xFFFFFFFF) are still completely unaccounted for. To note, my graphics card is on PCI-Express and (allegedly) has 1 GiB dedicated memory, so that shouldn't be the culprit. Did the BIOS screw up in moving the memory, leaving it partially shadowed by MMIO? Even with this mediocre explanation, I only 'found' 128 MiB. But /proc/meminfo is reporting a much larger deficit; where's the other 146 MiB? How does Linux count MemTotal?

Linux Has Become Very Slow Dealing With Large Data

Last year I bought a computer, for around $1,800, so it is relatively high-end. When I first got it I was particularly pleased at how quick it dealt with large MySQL queries, imports and exports. But somewhere along the way something has gone wrong and I am not sure how to diagnose the problem. Any job that involves processing large amounts of data, e.g. gzipping file c. 1GB+, UPDATEs on large MySQL tables etc. have become very slow. I just performed an intensive alter statement on a 240,000,000 row table on a remote server, which is lower spec. This took about 10 minutes. However, performing the same query on a 167,000,000 row table on my computer went fine until it hit 860MB. Now it is only writing about 1MB every 15 seconds. Does anyone have any advice as to debugging what the issue is? I am using LinuxMint (based on Ubuntu 12.04.) The home partition is encrypted, which really slows down gzip. I have noticed the swap is barely used, but am not sure if that is because there is more than enough RAM. The filesystem is ext4. The MySQL server is on a separate hard drive, but it was fine when I first installed it. Other than the above issues, there are no other problems with it. I am going to install a fresh Ubuntu on the 4th hard drive to see if that is any different.

Logging won't stop on log file after renaming/moving it.... how do I stop it?

Just discovered that logrotate is not rotating our firewall log. So it's up to 12G in size. I need to split up the file into smaller chunks and start manually rotating them so I can get things back on track. However before I start splitting the firewall up, I need to stop the firewall from logging to the current firewall log file and force it to start logging to a new empty file. This way I'm not trying to split up or rotate a log file that is still constantly growing. I tried to simply do this: mv firewall firewall.old touch firewall I expected to see the new empty firewall file to start growing in size, but no... the firewall.old is still be logged to. Then I tried to start/stop iptables. No change. firewall.old is still the log file. I tried to move it to another directory. That didn't help. I tried to stop iptables, then change the filename and create a new firewall file and then start iptables again, but no change. How do I stop the logging on this file and force it to start logging on a new file?

Linux SFTP and many local user accounts, limits with mount --bind?

I am in the process of building a solution to handle many developers (possibly hundreds) to work on their files via sftp, each one Jailed in their home directory. For our particular needs, we have a samba mount point that contains all of the users home directories. I have started developing the following solution and hit some walls: - I have configured a Ubuntu Lucid Server as sftp server. - In order to jail the user in their home directory (without allowing them the browse a directory up and seeing all the other users folders) I am using mount --bind and not a symbolic link (also some ftp clients don't really work with sym links). - The user accounts are local unix user accounts on the sftp server (not using a directory service or anything) that have an empty home folder created on the local machine, then I use mount --bind to bind the empty folder to the actual users home directory on the samba share. With this solution I am hitting a couple of problems, in the case of a server reboot, all the mount --binds are lost because they are not written in fstab. Then I have read somewhere that the maximum amount of entries in fstab are 400 (which does not really help us). I have thought of a solution of writing something that stores the mounts in a text file as a backup and on server reboot, run the script that re mounts. I am just really unsure about this whole process and was wondering if anyone has any insight on possibly a better solution for SFTP? (not FTP)

Compare cells in two different spreadsheets and extract data from one an place it in the other if match found

I need to find a way to compare two spreadsheets and if there is a match on specific cells, pull data from one sheet to another. Say the two spreadsheets contain a value that identifies a piece of equipment: spreadsheet 1 spreadsheet 2 Server Server Serial # 123abc 123abc 123-xx-456 There are of course many, many records/rows in each sheet. I need to look at the first cell in the server column of sheet 1 and then search a range of cells in the sever column of sheet 2 for a match. If there is a match, I need to pull the serial # value from the cell in the matching row an put it into the serial # cell of the matching row in sheet 1 (all of the "serial #" cells in sheet 1 are presently empty.) If that description explaination is too convoluted I can explain by answering any questions you may have. My deadline for this task is Noon tomorrow, 30 Aug 2012. Yes, I got the task today at noon.... I am not an Excel user and just get thrust into it on occassion... Any help would be a huge assist.

where are the default ulimit values set? (linux, centos)

I have two CentOS (5) servers with nearly identical specs. When I login and do: ulimit -u on one machine, I get unlimited and on the other, 77824 When I run a cron like * * * * * ulimit -u > ulimit.txt I get the same results (unlimited, 77824). I am trying to determine where these are set so that I can alter them. They are not set in any of my profiles (.bashrc, /etc/profile, etc .. these wouldn't affect cron anyway) nor in /etc/security/limits.conf (which is empty). I have scoured google and even gone so far as to do grep -Ir 77824 / but nothing has turned up so far. I don't understand how these machines could have come preset with different limits. I am actually wondering not for these machines, but for a different (CentOS 6) machine which has a limit of 1024, which is far too small. I need to run cron jobs with a higher limit and the only way I know how to set that is in the cron job itself. That's ok, but I'd rather set it system wide so it's not as hacky. Thanks for any help. This seems like it should be easy (NOT) EDIT -- SOLVED Ok, I figured this out. It seems to be an issue either with CentOS 6 or perhaps my machine configuration. On the CentOS 5 configuration, I can set in /etc/security/limits.conf: * - nproc unlimited and that would effectively update the accounts and cron limits. However, this does not work in my CentOS 6 box. Instead, I must do: myname1 - nproc unlimited myname2 - nproc unlimited ... And things work as expected. Maybe the UID specification works to, but the wildcard (*) definitely DOES NOT here. Oddly, wildcards DO work for the 'nofile' limit. I still would love to know where the default values are actually coming from, because by default, this file is empty and I couldn't see why I had different defaults for the two CentOS boxes, which had identical hardware and were from the same provider.

Memory Usage by Mapped Files (Win7 64Bit)

When copying files from/to my external USB3 HDD memory usage in Win7 goes up to 100% and remains there. I'm not sure whether this is a problem caused by faulty drivers or not, but I already have the current version of them (Etron USB3 controller on a Gigabyte 990fxa board).. Using RAMMap it becomes obvious that the files, that are to be copied, are mapped into memory. Clicking on Empty > Empty System Working Set seems to temporarily fix the problem (without causing any trouble with the file copy process), but it needs to be done every few seconds. Is there any way to schedule this operation to happen ever 10 or so seconds on its own? What underlying system command is RAMMap using? Or, alternatively, is there any way to limit how much RAM mapped files may use in Windows 7? I know mapped files would usually be removed from memory if other programs need the memmory, but while memmory usage is at 100% the system starts freezing up for half a second or so everytime I click anything .. thus the automatic removal of unused memory contents seems to be failing here.

Multiple Components in a JTree Node Renderer & Node Editor

I am attempting to create a JTree where a node has several components: a JPanel that holds a JCheckBox, followed by a JLabel, then a JComboBox. I have attached the code at the bottom if one wishes to run it. Fortunately the JTree correctly renders the components. However when I click on the JComboBox, the node disappears; if I click on the JCheckBox, it works fine. It seems that I am doing something wrong with how the TreeCellEditor is being set up. How could I resolve this issue? Am I going beyond the capabilities of JTree? Here's a quick overview of the code I have posted below. The class EntityListDialog merely creates the user interface. It is not useful to understand it other than the createTree method. Node is the data structure that holds information about each node in the JTree. All Nodes have a name, but samples may be null or an empty array. This should be evident by looking at EntityListDialog's createTree method. The name is used as the text of the JCheckBox. If samples is non-empty, it is used as the contents of the JCheckBox. NodeWithSamplesRenderer renders Nodes whose samples are non-empty. It creates the complicated user interface with the JPanel consisting of the JCheckBox and the JComboBox. NodeWithoutSamplesRenderer creates just a JCheckBox when samples is empty. RendererDispatcher decides whether to use a NodeWithSamplesRenderer or a NodeWithoutSamplesRenderer. This entirely depends on whether Node has a non-empty samples member or not. It essentially functions as a means for the NodeWith*SamplesRenderer to plug into the JTree. Simple Self Join Query Bad Performance

Could anyone advice on how do I improve the performance of the following query. Note, the problem seems to be caused by where clause. Memory leak involving jQuery Ajax requests

I have a webpage that's leaking memory in both IE8 and Firefox; the memory usage displayed in the Windows Process Explorer just keeps growing over time. The following page requests the "unplanned.json" url, which is a static file that never changes (though I do set my Cache-control HTTP header to no-cache to make sure that the Ajax request always goes through). When it gets the results, it clears out an HTML table, loops over the json array it got back from the server, and dynamically adds a row to an HTML table for each entry in the array. Then it waits 2 seconds and repeats this process. So you can't give it a query like `$("#content tbody tr")` and expect it to remove all of the elements you've specified. Any element that you remove with it must have an `id` attribute. So if I want to remove my `tbody`, then I must assign an `id` to my `tbody` tag or else it will give an error. It removes the element itself and all of its descendants, so if you simply want to empty that element then you'll have to re-create it afterwards (or modify the plugin to empty instead of remove). So here's my page above modified to use Toran's plugin. For the sake of simplicity I didn't apply any of the general performance advice offered by Peter. Converting a WPFToolkit DataGrid from 1D list to 2D matrix

Hello - I am wondering if anyone has attempted the following or has an idea as to how to do it. I have a WPFToolkit DataGrid which is bound to an ObservableCollection of items. As such, the DataGrid is shown with as many rows in the ObservableCollection, and as many columns as I have defined in for the DataGrid. That all is good. What I now need is to provide another view of the same data, only, instead, the DataGrid is shown with as many cells in the ObservableCollection. So let's say, my ObservableCollection has 100 items in it. The original scenario showed the DataGrid with 100 rows and 1 column. In the modified scenario, I need to show it with 10 rows and 10 columns, where each cell shows the value that was in the original representation. In other words, I need to transform my 1D ObservableCollection to a 2D ObservableCollection and display it in the DataGrid. I know how to do that programmatically in the code behind, but can it be done in XAML? Let me simplify the problem a little, in case anybody can have a crack at this. The XAML below does the following: * Defines an XmlDataProvider just for dummy data * Creates a DataGrid with 10 columns o each column is a DataGridTemplateColumn using the same CellTemplate * The CellTemplate is a simple TextBlock bound to an XML element If you run the XAML below, you will find that the DataGrid ends up with 5 rows, one for each book, and 10 columns that have identical content (all showing the book titles). However, what I am trying to accomplish, albeit with a different data set, is that in this case, I would end up with one row, with each book title appearing in a single cell in row 1, occupying cells 0-4, and nothing in cells 5-9. Then, if I added more data and had 12 books in my XML data source, I would get row 1 completely filled (cells covering the first 10 titles) and row 2 would get the first 2 cells filled. UITableView not displaying parsed data

I have a UITableView which is setup in Interface Builder and connected properly to its class in Xcode. I also have a "Importer" Class which downloads and parses an RSS feed and stores the information in an NSMutableArray. However I have verified the parsing is working properly (using breakpoints and NSlog) but no data is showing in the UITable View. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? I'm almost out of them. It's based on the XML performance Apple example. I am currently documenting all of Perl 5's operators (see the perlopref GitHub project) and I have decided to include Perl 5's pseudo-operators as well. To me, a pseudo-operator in Perl is anything that looks like an operator, but is really more than one operator or a some other piece of syntax. I have documented the four I am familiar with already: ()= the countof operator =()= the goatse/countof operator ~~ the scalar context operator }{ the Eskimo-kiss operator What other names exist for these pseudo-operators, and do you know of any pseudo-operators I have missed? =head1 Pseudo-operators There are idioms in Perl 5 that appear to be operators, but are really a combination of several operators or pieces of syntax. These pseudo-operators have the precedence of the constituent parts. =head2 ()= X =head3 Description This pseudo-operator is the list assignment operator (aka the countof operator). It is made up of two items C<()>, and C<=>. In scalar context it returns the number of items in the list X. In list context it returns an empty list. It is useful when you have something that returns a list and you want to know the number of items in that list and don't care about the list's contents. It is needed because the comma operator returns the last item in the sequence rather than the number of items in the sequence when it is placed in scalar context. It works because the assignment operator returns the number of items available to be assigned when its left hand side has list context. With the addition of the Smart match operator, this pseudo-operator is even more confusing. It is made up of an closing brace and an opening brace. It is used when using C<perl> as a command-line program with the C<-n> or C<-p> options. It has the effect of running X inside of the loop created by C<-n> or C<-p> and running Y at the end of the program. It works because the closing brace closes the loop created by C<-n> or C<-p> and the opening brace creates a new bare block that is closed by the loop's original ending. You can see this behavior by using the L<B::Deparse> module. Here is the command C<perl -ne 'print $_;'> deparsed: LINE: while (defined($_ = <ARGV>)) { print $_; } Notice how the original code was wrapped with the C<while> loop. I have a tabbed navigation wizard, for which the first section needs to be validated before proceeding to the next tab. The validation should trigger when the user hits the "next" button. If you go back to directory root and click on the link to the file the grid table is displayed, if you hit 'refresh' button -- the script runs but the table is not injected. Secondly, although the table HTML is injected in IE, it does not display it. I tried adding nbsp's to make sure its not ignored -- to no avail. Any suggestions on improving code or help with the issues is appreciated. Thanks!

I am trying to create a login page that will send the user to a different index.php page based on their login credentials. For example, should a user with the "IT Technician" role log in, they will be sent to "index.php", and if a user with the "Student" role log in, they will be sent to the "student/index.php" page.
