• Looking for an algorithm in vb.net or c# but I don't know it's name!

  I'll do my best to explain what the algorithm is supposed to do: There's a class 'Recipe'. Each Recipe can include other Recipes but cannot include itself or any other Recipe that includes it. So, a simple example is we have just two Recipes A & B. If A adds B first, then later on B cannot add A because it will cause a loop. A more complicated example is: A,B,C (1) Recipe C Adds B (2) Recipe B Adds A (3) Recipe A attempts to add C, but can't because of the relationship. C - B - A. I can do this myself, I just wondered if this was a standard named algorithm and I could grab the optimal solution. Thanks

• Is there performance to be gained by moving storage allocation local to a member function to its cla

  Suppose I have the following C++ class: class Foo { double bar(double sth); }; double Foo::bar(double sth) { double a,b,c,d,e,f a = b = c = d = e = f = 0; /* do stuff with a..f and sth */ } The function bar() will be called millions of times in a loop. Obviously, each time it's called, the variables a..f have to be allocated. Will I gain any performance by making the variables a..f members of the Foo class and just initializing them at the function's point of entry? On the other hand, the values of a..f will be dereferenced through this-, so I'm wondering if it isn't actually a possible performance degradation. Is there any overhead to accessing a value through a pointer? Thanks!

• C++ String manipulation isn't making sense to me...

  I am trying some of the Stanford SEE courses online to learn some new languages; this particular assignment has to do with removing substrings from strings. What I've got so far is below, but if text = "hello hello" and remove ="el", it gets stuck in a loop, but if i change text to text = "hello hllo", it works, making me think I'm doing something obviously stupid.   Hi all, I'm very new to Java programming language so this is probably dumb question but I have to ask it because I can't figure it out on my own. Here is the deal. I want to create method which extracts certain object type from a list. So the method should receive List as argument, meaning list should contain either Object1 or Object2. I've tried like this : public Object1 extractObject(List<?>){ //some pseudo-code ... loop trough list and check if list item is instance of object one return that instance } The problem with declaring method with List<?> as method argument is that I receive compilation error from eclipse Syntax error on token ">", VariableDeclaratorId expected after this token. How do I set the method signature properly to accept object types either Object1 or Object2 ? Thank you

• Suggestions on how to track tag count for a particular object

  Hi, I'm looking for suggestions on how to track the number of tags associated with a particular object in Rails. I'm using acts_as_taggable_on and it's working fine. What I would like to be able to do is search for all objects that have no tags, preferably through a scope i.e. Object.untagged.all My first thought was to use an after_save callback to update an attribute called "taggings_count" in my model: def update_taggings_count self.taggings_count = self.tag_list.size self.save end Unfortunately, this does the obvious thing of putting me in an infinite loop. I need to use an after_save callback because the tag_list is not updated until the main object is saved. Would appreciate any suggestions as I'm on the verge of rolling my own tagging system. • C++ boost or STL `y += f(x)` type algorithm

  hello. I know I can do this y[i] += f(x[i]) using transform with two input iterators. however it seems somewhat counterintuitive and more complicated than for loop. Is there a more natural way to do so using existing algorithm in boost or Stl. I could not find clean equivalent. here is transform (y = y + a*x): using boost::lambda; transform(y.begin(), y.end(), x.begin(), y.begin(), (_1 + scale*_2); // I thought something may exist: transform2(x.begin(), x.end(), y.begin(), (_2 + scale*_1); // it does not, so no biggie.   Is there a possibility to write a GUI from inside a function? The Problem is: The callback of all GUI-functions work in the global workspace. But functions have their own workspace and can not access variables in the global workspace.   I want to write a function that could check every item in a list is true or false.   hi, so i have a table lets say call it "tbl.items" and there is a column "title" in "tbl.items" i want to loop through each row and for each "title" in "tbl.items" i want to do following: the column has the datatype nvarchar(max) and contains a string... filter the string to remove words like in,out, where etc (stopwords) compare the rest of the string to a predefined list and if there is a match perform some action which involves inserting data in other tables as well.. the problem is im ignotent when it comes to writing T-sql scripts, plz help and guide me how can i achieve this? whether it can be achieved by writing a sql script?? or i have to develope a console application in c# or anyother language?? im using mssql server 2008 thanks in advance

• Excel Spreadsheet - Best way to perform an Oracle Query on a cell

  Hi there, I have an Excel Spreadsheeet. There is a cell containing a concatenated name and surname (don't ask why), for example: Cell A2 BLOGGSJOE On this cell, I would like to run the following SQL and output it to cell A3, A4 and A5 SELECT i.id, i.forename, i.surname FROM individual i WHERE UPPER(REPLACE('" & A2 & "', ' ', '')) = UPPER(REPLACE(i.surname|| i.forename, ' ', '')) AND NVL(i.ind_efface, 'N') = 'N' Any idea how I could perform an oracle query on each cell and return the result? I have enabled an oracle datasource connection in Excel, just not sure what to do now. Is this a stupid approach, and can you recommend a better more proficient way? Thanks muchly! I lack the necessary experience in this type of thing! :-) EDIT: I am aware that I could just write a simple ruby/php/python/whatever script to loop through the excel spreadsheet (or csv file), and then perform the query etc. but i thought there might be a quick way in excel itself.

• Closing any open info windows in google maps api v3

  As the title states, on a given event (for me this happens to be upon opening a new google.maps.InfoWindow I want to be able to close any other currently open info windows. Right now, I can open many at a time..but I want only 1 open at a time. I am creating the info windows dynamically (i.e. I don't know ahead of time how many will be generated), so in the click event of the current info window (which is where I want all the other open ones closed) I don't have a reference to any of the other open info windows on which to call close(). I am wondering how I can achieve this. I am not an experienced JavaScript programmer so I don't know if I need to use reflection or something similar here. Would the best way be just to save all the references in some sort of collection, then loop through the list closing them all? Thanks.

When I just add a new child form and set location it seems to work fine, however when I do many in a loop they all cascade.

The column sums are easy via the 'dims' argument of colSums(): > colSums(a, dims = 1) but I cannot find a way to use rowSums() on the array to achieve the desired result, as it has a different interpretation of 'dims' to that of colSums(). It is simple to compute the desired row sums using: > apply(a, 3, rowSums) [,1] [,2] [1,] 12 12 [2,] 15 15 [3,] 18 18 but that is just hiding the loop. Are there other efficient, truly vectorised, ways of computing the required row sums?

• How can I create a simple message box in Python?

  I'm looking for the same effect as alert() in JavaScript. I wrote a simple web-based interpreter this afternoon using Twisted.web. You basically submit a block of Python code through a form, and the client comes and grabs it and executes it. I want to be able to make a simple popup message, without having to re-write a whole bunch of boilerplate wxPython or TkInter code every time (since the code gets submitted through a form and then disappears). I've tried tkMessageBox: import tkMessageBox tkMessageBox.showinfo(title="Greetings", message="Hello World!") but this opens another window in the background with a tk icon. I don't want this. I was looking for some simple wxPython code but it always required setting up a class and entering an app loop etc. Is there no simple, catch-free way of making a message box in Python?

  Hi, I have a bunch of items – for simplicity reasons – a flat table with unique names seeded via bulk insert: create table #items ( ItemName NVARCHAR(255) ) The database has this structure: create table Statements ( Id INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Version INT not null, FurtherDetails varchar(max) null, ProposalDateTime DATETIME null, UpdateDateTime DATETIME null, ProposerFk INT null, UpdaterFk INT null, primary key (Id) ) create table Item ( StatementFk INT not null, ItemName NVARCHAR(255) null, primary key (StatementFk) ) Here Item is a child of Statement (inheritance). I would like to insert items in #items using a set based approach (avoiding triggers and loops). Can this be achieved with OUTPUT in my scenario. A ‘loop based’ approach is just too slow where I use something like this: insert into Statements (Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk) VALUES (1, null, getdate(), getdate(), @user_id, @user_id) etc. This is a start for the OUTPUT based approach – but I am not sure whether this would work in my case as ItemName is only inserted into Item: insert into Statements ( Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk ) output inserted.Id ... ???
