    I'm trying to find a better way to get the next or previous record from a table. Let's say I have a blog or news table: CREATE TABLE news ( news_id INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT, news_datestamp DATETIME NOT NULL, news_author VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, news_title VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, news_text MEDIUMTEXT NOT NULL ); Now on the frontend I want navigation buttons for the next or previous records, if i'm sorting by news_id, I can do something rather simple like: SELECT MIN(news_id) AS next_news_id FROM news WHERE news_id > '$old_news_id' LIMIT 1 SELECT MAX(news_id) AS prev_news_id FROM news WHERE news_id < '$old_news_id' LIMIT 1 But the news can be sorted by any field, and I don't necessarily know which field is sorted on, so this won't work if the user sorts on news_author for example. I've resorted to the rather ugly and inefficient method of sorting the entire table and looping through all records until I find the record I need. $res = mysql_query("SELECT news_id FROM news ORDER BY `$sort_column` $sort_way"); $found = $prev = $next = 0; while(list($id) = mysql_fetch_row($res)) { if($found) { $next = $id; break; } if($id == $old_news_id) { $found = true; continue; } $prev = $id; } There's got to be a better way.

  • Performance - User defined query / filter to search data

    What is the best way to design a system where users can create their own criterias to search data ? By "design" i mean, data storage, data access layer and search structure. We will actually refactor an existing application which is written in C# and ASP .NET and we don't want to change the infrastructure. Our main issue is performance and we use MSSQL and DevExpress to build queries. Some queries run in 4-5 minutes and all the columns included in the queries have indexes. When i check queries, i see that DevExpress builds too many "exists" clauses and i'm not happy with that because i have doubts that some of these queries skip some indexes. What may be the alternatives to DevExpress? NHibernate or Entity Framework? Can we build dynamic criteria system and store these to database in both of them ? And also do we need any alternative storage like a lucene index or OLAP database?

    Given a classes Foo, Bar which have hibernate mappings to tables Foo, A, B and C public class Foo { Integer aid; Integer bid; Integer cid; ...; } public class Bar { A a; B b; C c; ...; } I build a List fooList of an arbitrary size and I would like to use hibernate to fetch List where the resulting list will look something like this: Bar[1] = [X1,Y2,ZA,...] Bar[2] = [X1,Y2,ZB,...] Bar[3] = [X1,Y2,ZC,...] Bar[4] = [X1,Y3,ZD,...] Bar[5] = [X2,Y4,ZE,...] Bar[6] = [X2,Y4,ZF,...] Bar[7] = [X2,Y5,ZG,...] Bar[8] = ... Where each Xi, Yi and Zi represents a unique object.     I have a QuerySet that I wish to pass to a generic view for pagination: links = Link.objects.annotate(votes=Count('vote')).order_by('-created')[:300] This is my "hot" page which lists my 300 latest submissions (10 pages of 30 links each). I want to now sort this QuerySet by an algorithm that HackerNews uses: (p - 1) / (t + 2)^1.5 p = votes minus submitter's initial vote t = age of submission in hours Now because applying this algorithm over the entire database would be pretty costly I am content with just the last 300 submissions. My site is unlikely to be the next digg/reddit so while scalability is a plus it is required. My question is now how do I iterate over my QuerySet and sort it by the above algorithm?     I have 2 SQL 2005 servers SRV1 and SRV2. SRV2 is the linked server on SRV1. I run a storep proc with params on SRV2 and it is completed immediately. But when I run the same proc through the linked server on SRV1, for example EXEC [SRV1].DB_TEST.dbo.p_sample_proc it takes about 8-10 minutes to complete. After restarting SRV2 the problem is gone. But some time later it returns. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Here always the type Act has ID 1, Eng has ID 2 and Prj has ID 3. The type ACT parent is always NUll, type Eng parent is Act and type Prj parent is Eng Now I have table called Detail.I am writing a SP to insert Detail Table data to the Summary table. I am passing the id as parameter: I am having problem with the parent. How do I get that? I can always say when ID is 1 then parent is Null but when ID is 2 then parent is name of ID 1 similarly when ID is 3 then parent is name of ID2. How do I get that? Can anyone help me with this:
