  Hi I downloaded the plugin from http://github.com/techweenie/restful-authentication.git Then I run rails generate plugin authenticated user session This is the result I got: create vendor/plugins/authenticated create vendor/plugins/authenticated/MIT-LICENSE create vendor/plugins/authenticated/README create vendor/plugins/authenticated/Rakefile create vendor/plugins/authenticated/init.rb create vendor/plugins/authenticated/install.rb create vendor/plugins/authenticated/uninstall.rb create vendor/plugins/authenticated/lib create vendor/plugins/authenticated/lib/authenticated.rb invoke test_unit inside vendor/plugins/authenticated create test create test/authenticated_test.rb create test/test_helper.rb Then I tried to do rake db:migrate But I got error that says rake tasks in restful-authentication/tasks/auth.rake are deprecated. Use lib/tasks instead. I am new to rails, tried looking online but things seem to be outdated. Please help!

  I'm trying to implement Ryan's Railscast #197 in a system with Questions, Answers, and (multiple choice) Options. http://railscasts.com/episodes/197-nested-model-form-part-2. I have successfully implemented the nesting among these forms/partials. The simpler 'check box' way to delete records works properly. The problem occurs when I try to add/delete records. • Compass, Haml alongside Sass installation took over ERB, need to reverse

  Hi all, I've been trying out Compass for a few days now, and just now I ran into some strange problem: The past few days, as usual, whenever I use my textmate shortcut to create a partial if not already created, that partial will be created in .erb format, but then just now, a few minutes ago, I have no idea what I have done, when I tried to create a new partial, it is prompting me to create one that ends with .haml. when I didn't create that and manually created a .erb partial with all the code that was suppose to go in there, I tried to load the page that uses that partial, it says the partial is missing. That kind of tells me now Rails is looking for Haml templates instead of erb templates. That means all my other partials are useless. And indeed they have become!!! I don't know how this happened. It was working fine with ERB just minutes ago, and suddenly Haml took over and demand all partials be written in it. So my question: Can I keep both Haml and Erb in one Rails application and use mostly erb except for Sass/compass related files? Where in Rails does it state what templating format (erb | haml) it should use? Thanks!

• Can I ensure all tests contain an assertion in test/unit?

  With test/unit, and minitest, is it possible to fail any test that doesn't contain an assertion, or would monkey-patching be required (for example, checking if the assertion count increased after each test was executed)? Background: I shouldn't write unit tests without assertions - at a minimum, I should use assert_nothing_raised if I'm smoke testing to indicate that I'm smoke testing. Usually I write tests that fail first, but I'm writing some regression tests. Alternatively, I could supply an incorrect expected value to see if the test is comparing the expected and actual value.

  Hi, I have 2 models, Assessments and Questions. Assessments have many questions. • Rails flash hash violation of MVC?

  I know Rails' flash hash is nothing new, but I keep running into the same problem with it. Controllers should be for business logic and db queries, not formatting strings for display to the user. But the flash hash is always set in the controller. This means that I need to hack and work around Rails to use Helpers that I made to format strings for the flash hash. Is this just a pragmatic compromise to MVC or am I missing something here? How do you deal with this problem? Or do you not even see it as one?

• Action Controller: Exception - ID not found

  Hi Everyone, I am slowly getting the hang of Rails and thanks to a few people I now have a basic grasp of the database relations and associations etc. You can see my previous questions here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2714621/rails-database-relationships I have setup my applications models with all of the necessary has_one and has_many :through etc. but when I go to add a kase and choose from a company from the drop down list - it doesnt seem to be assigning the company ID to the kase. • newbie: Rails on remote Apache server not displaying index.html.erb

  I played around with Rails on my laptop (running Linux + Apache + MySQL) and had no trouble getting the Getting Started with Rails tutorial to work locally. Now I'm trying the same thing at work on a remote Mac OS X + Apache server, and things aren't quite so rosy. I typed rails blog -d mysql to create a directory called blog in /Library/WebServer/Documents/mydirectory. The trouble is, if I go to server.com/mydirectory/public, I get the public/index.html in my browser. But, I don't get this file if I go to server.com/mydirectory/. Instead, I get a 403 error. Also, when I: script/generate controller home index to create: app/views/home/index.html.erb I am unable to view this file, whether I go to server.com/mydirectory/home/index, or if I add a new line (map.root :controller => "home") to config/routes.rb and go to server.com/mydirectory. Am I missing something really obvious about Apache and Rails?

• Determine if count of related model > 0

  I have a model called Stem. I need a 'thumbs up' feature, so I have created a second model called Thumb, which consists of stem_id and user_id. I'm also using the restful authentication plugin for user credentials. I have the 'thumbs up' button working, which adds a row to the thumbs table fine, but I'd like to be able to check if the currently logged in user has already given a thumbs up to this particular stem. I tried adding this to the Stem model: def thumbed Thumb.count_by_sql ["SELECT COUNT(*) FROM thumbs WHERE user_id = ? AND stem_id = ?", current_user.id, self.id ] end The problem here is that the stem model has no access to the current_user variable the the controllers have. Is there a way I can get access to this property, or alternatively, is there another way I could go about checking this? I was hoping to get this as a property in the model because the stems are passed over to a Flex app using RubyAMF. Thanks!

• Should frontend and backend handled by different controllers?

  In my previous learning projects I always used a single controller, but know I wonder if that is good practice or even always possible. In all RESTful Rails tutorials the controllers have a show, an edit and an index view. If an authorized user is logged on, the edit view becomes available and the index view shows additional data manipulation controls, like a delete button or a link to the edit view. Now I have a Rails application which falls exactly into this pattern, but the index view is not reusable: The normal user sees a flashy index page with lots of pictures, complex layout, no Javascript requirement, ... The Admin user index has a completly different minimalistic design, jQuery table and lots of additional data, ... Now I'm not sure how to handle this case. I can think of the following: Single controller, single view: The view is split into two large blocks/partials using an if statement. Single controller, two views: index and index_admin. Two different controllers: BookController and BookAdminController None of this solutions seems perfect, but for now I'm inclined to use the 3rd option. What's the preferred way to do this?

  Two questions: How can I import a file from a web address, without a form? Example: Organisation.import(:from = 'http://wufoo.com/report.csv') How can I use xml builder without pulling from the db? More Info My company uses wufoo for web forms. The data from wufoo is exported as csv files. To get the data into my company's cms, it needs to be formatted as xml. I don't need to store any of the data, aside from the url to the csv file. I thought this might work well as a simple rails app.

All the books mentioned in the other questions are creating some depot application or etc using scaffold and then explaining things. I believe in the thing that creating big depot is worthless when you are not getting anything. All of my frnds are suggesting me to go for this pragmatic book. look i understand the book is good but i m not getting the proper things. I got the logic cause i m good in php doctrine. asp.net c c++ so i m getting the things but i m not feeling confident. I want to have a another book. Can anybody suggest me some other books. I m saying this cause it really feels good when u create a simple form and insert the values in db and u can retreive those values and MOST IMP you can explain the whole logic of the that small form application instaed of that colorfull Depot application in which things are done with scaffold and u r not getting the thing and u are confused abt the real picture.

  I am using search logic to filter results on company listing page. The user is able to specify any number of parameters using a variety of named URLs. For example: /location/mexico /sector/technology /sector/financial/location/argentina Results in the following respectively: params[:location] == 'mexico' params[:sector] == 'technology' params[:sector] == 'financial' and params[:location] == 'argentina' I am now trying to cleanup or 'DRY' my model code. Currently I have: def self.search(params) ... if params[:location] results = results.location_permalink_equals params[:location] if results results = Company.location_permalink_equals params[:location] unless results end if params[:sector] results = results.location_permalink_equals params[:sector] if results results = Company.location_permalink_equals params[:sector] unless results end ... end I don't like repeating the searchs. • Performing AJAX calls on the "new" controller

  In my rails app, I want to have a sortable list as part of an object creation. The best practice suggested Railscast adds the acts_as_list plugin and then initiates AJAX calls to update item position. However, AJAX calls won't work on an unsaved model, which is the situation with new. One solution would be to save the model immediately on new and redirect to edit. This would have a nice side effect of persisting any change so the user could resume work should he be interrupted. However, this solution adds the unwanted complexity of saving an invalid model, compromising rails' validation processes. Is there any better way to allow AJAX + validations without going into too much work?

  Ciao a tutti, nella Rails app che sto realizzando, l'utente ha la possibilita' di inserire un post (campo memo) con all'interno una URL. Ad esempio: "bla bla bla bla www.blabla.com bla bla bla ..." Nel mostrare tale post vorrei che www.blabla.com diventasse un link cliccabile (come avviene in twitter). Ovviamente deve essere fatto un parsing della url, immagino usando le espressioni regolari. • Solution for social network + marketplace with multiple sellers?

What is the best technology solution for that? I was thinking of going Rails route, using CommunityEngine and ActiveMerchant. • Passing parameters to custom RESTful routes in Rails (using :collection)

  I am trying to add a custom route to my RESTful routes using the :collection param on map.resources like so: map.resources :products, :collection => { :tagged => :get } The tagged action takes in a :tag parameter. I am able to link to the URL route using: tagged_products_path(:tag => tag.name). My issue with this is that the URL that this generates: /products/tagged?tag=electronic I would like the tag to be in the URL and not the tag, like so: /products/tagged/electronic Of course this can be accomplished by a separate named route, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something and there is a way to do this with the :collection hash.
