  • What can you do in C without "std" includes? Are they part of "C," or just libraries?

    I apologize if this is a subjective or repeated question. It's sort of awkward to search for, so I wasn't sure what terms to include. What I'd like to know is what the basic foundation tools/functions are in C when you don't include standard libraries like stdio and stdlib. What could I do if there's no printf(), fopen(), etc? Also, are those libraries technically part of the "C" language, or are they just very useful and effectively essential libraries?

    I have 3 tables: Foos, Bars and FooBarConfirmations I want to have a in-memory list of FooBarConfirmations by their hash: FooID BarID Hash 1 1 1_1 2 1 2_1 1 2 1_2 2 2 2_2 What would be the best Class to use to store this type of structure in-memory, so that I can quickly check to see if a combination exists like so: list.Contains("1_2"); I can do this with Dictionary<string,anything>, but it "feels" wrong. HashSet looks like the right tool for the job, but does it use some form of hashing algorithm in the background to do the lookups efficiently?

  • Why doesn't Java warn about a == "something"?

    This might sound stupid, but why doesn't the Java compiler warn about the expression in the following if statement: String a = "something"; if(a == "something"){ System.out.println("a is equal to something"); }else{ System.out.println("a is not equal to something"); } I realize why the expression is untrue, but AFAIK, a can never be equal to the String literal "something". The compiler should realize this and at least warn me that I'm an idiot who is coding way to late at night.

  • How would one go about adding (minor) syntactic sugars to Java?

    Suppose I want to add minor syntactic sugars to Java. Just little things like adding regex pattern literals, or perhaps base-2 literals, or multiline strings, etc. Nothing major grammatically (at least for now). How would one go about doing this? Do I need to extend the bytecode compiler? (Is that possible?) Can I write Eclipse plugins to do simple source code transforms before feeding it to the standard Java compiler?

    I've read the essay Surviving the Release Version. Under the "Aliasing bugs" clause it says: You can get tighter code if you tell the compiler that it can assume no aliasing.... I've also read Aliasing (computing). What exactly is a variable alias? I understand it means using a pointer to a variable is an alias, but, how/why does it affect badly, or in other words - why telling the compiler that it can assume no aliasing would get me a "tighter code"

I am using TI DSPs and the compiler is something different than cc; I'd like to have one "environment file" that defines where the compiler is, and what the default flags are, and then be able to use this for several projects.   • Self Modifying Python? How can I redirect all print statements within a function without touching sys.stdout?

    I have a situation where I am attempting to port some big, complex python routines to a threaded environment. I want to be able to, on a per-call basis, redirect the output from the function's print statement somewhere else (a logging.Logger to be specific). I really don't want to modify the source for the code I am compiling, because I need to maintain backwards compatibility with other software that calls these modules (which is single threaded, and captures output by simply grabbing everything written to sys.stdout). I know the best option is to do some rewriting, but I really don't have a choice here. Edit - Alternatively, is there any way I can override the local definition of print to point to a different function? I could then define the local print = system print unless overwritten by a kwarg, and would only involve modify a few lines at the beginning of each routine.

  • Performance of vector::size() : is it as fast as reading a variable?

    I have do an extensive calculation on a big vector of integers. The vector size is not changed during the calculation. The size of the vector is frequently accessed by the code. What is faster in general: using the vector::size() function or using helper constant vectorSize storing the size of the vector? I know that compilers usually able to inline the size() function when setting the proper compiler flags, however, making a function inline is something that a compiler may do but can not be forced.

  • Error installing pkgconfig via macports

    I installed Macports 1.8.2 from a DMG. That seemed to install fine. I ran sudo port selfupdate to make sure my ports tree was current. I then tried to install bindfs as I want to mount some directories in my OS X file system (like you can do with mount --bind in linux). pkgconfig and macfuse are two dependencies of bindfs.     I would like my Xbox (Xbmc) to access my Windows 7 shares without having Guest accounts enabled and without using my Administrator account login details. I have tried making it an account called Xbox and this works fine but the Xbox account appears on the login page for Windows. Is there a way to create an account that is purely for accessing shares without it appearing as a user account????

    I downloaded Azureus (a bittorrent client) for Debian Linux, and I notice that Azureus got my firewall (a Verizon wireless base station) to open a TCP and UDP port forwarding for it, without my having to do anything. My base station is password protected, and I'm alarmed at the idea that any random application can open ports without my knowing about it. Can somebody explain to me what is going on and how it is possible that Azureus can create this port-forwarding rule without any authentication?

The feature of FTPDrive that is useful for me is accesing files from an FTP as local files without pre-downloading so that I can preview and watch movies from a local FTP server without waiting for a full movie to get downloaded first. Do you know of any software which allows accessing files over FTP without pre-downloading? Thanks!
