• Is there such a thing as a virtual COM port receipt printer?

  I'm debugging some code that writes directly to a COM port in order to print receipts on a receipt printer. The printer model is something like an Epsom TM-88. Instead of printing reams of thermal paper while debugging this code, it would be nice if I could use some kind of virtual printer. Like PDFCreator or FinePrint, but with a virtual COM port instead of a virtual windows printer. Does anyone know of such a thing? Edit: The code sends control characters to get bold text and other formatting. I'd like to see this in the output if possible.

For example, suppose we execute the query: SELECT Id FROM Opportunity WHERE CloseDate = THIS_FISCAL_QUARTER where, according to our company's fiscal settings, THIS_FISCAL_QUARTER runs from Jan 1 to Mar 31. Does the range for THIS_FISCAL_QUARTER use... the user's time zone? • Is there a COM object that just implements IUnknown I can use?

  For an asynchronous Windows API, I can provide an IUnknown state parameter to associate calls to the API with calls from the callback. It's my understanding that COM guarantees that two IUnknown pointers to the same object will be of the same value. Thus, if I only want to associate API calls with callbacks, IUnknown should be all I need, by comparing the values of the pointers. Is there a stock implementation of IUnknown I can use? Of course it would be trivial to implement myself, but for such a base component of COM, I'm wondering if Windows or ATL provides one I should use instead. Thanks, --Matt

• Deploying 32 and 64 bit COM objects on 64 bit machine from one VS setup project MSI.

  I have a Shell Namespace Extension C++ COM DLL that must have both a 32 bit and 64 bit version installed on a 64 bit machine, because when 32 bit applications perform a file- open the dialog that is presented is a 32 bit shell. The problem is that both my 32 bit and 64 bit COM objects have the same progid and the VS setup project will throw an error when including two files with the same progid. How do I get around this issue if I want to maintain the same code for both 32 and 64 bit? Currently I just have two different MSI's (32 and 64) and they both must be ran on the 64 bit machine.

• Can an out-of-process COM object determine its parent process?

  From an out-of-process COM object (LocalServer32) can I determine the client process that requested the creation of the object? - to be specific I need to get hold of the client processes command line. This question arrises because (due to poor standardisation, implementation and support) the potential 3rd party clients of the object have a variety of idiosyncracies which the object needs to workaround. To do this the object needs to be able to identify its current client. Extending the interface of the COM object so that the client can identify itself is unfortunately not possible ... or to be more precise the interface can be extended but I won't be able to get the clients to call the extension.

• How do I request a single random row from a force.com database in SOQL?

  Total row-count is in the range 10k-100k rows. Can I use RAND() on force.com? Unfortunately although all the rows have a unique numeric identifier, there are many gaps, and I'd often want to select a random row from a filtered subset anyway. I suspect there's no particularly efficient way to do this, but is it possible at all? Ultimately all I want to do is to extract one row from a table (or a subset based on specific filter criteria) at random. If force.com doesn't let me select a random row, then can I query the rows to select from, and assign sequential IDs to all the rows, say 1-1,035, and then select a random number in that range locally, say 349, and then get row 349?

  I have a Postfix email setup. It's handle a few domains (i.e. I have them in my mynetworks in my main.cf). I have a normal unix account and use that to log in, and get my mail. My personal email account is of the form user@personal.com. I have a new domain new.com, and I want to forward info@new.com to user@personal.com, however I don't want to forward info@personal.com. Someone has suggested just forwarding all 'info' to 'user', and then using procmail on my user@ account to remove the info@personal.com The server is Ubuntu.

  I remember sometime ago, I uninstall an application called starfield, but probably I didn't do a clean uninstall. Now in Console, I always see a annoying message: com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4441]) Exited with exit code: 1 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4442]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Starfield/BackupService/offSyncService", ...): No such file or directory I know it could be something wrong with my installation, how can I do a clean uninstall now, or just fix this issue, I don't want to see this message from my console any more. • OpenWRT based gateway with dnsmasq and internal server with bind

  I have router based on OpenWRT which has dnsmasq 2.59. Inside my local area network I have a NS server bind. This server has internal and external views for a couple of my domains. My router forwards port 53 TCP and UDP from outside IP (router WAN) to this server. For the external clients everything works fine. In order to organize the internal view, I decided to add the exception to /etc/dnsmasq.conf server=/mydomain1.com/192.168.1.1 server=/mydomain2.com/192.168.1.1 server=/mydomain3.com/192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1 - IP address of the NS server) According to dnsmasq manstrong text: More specific domains take precendence over less specific domains, so: --server=/google.com/1.2.3.4 --server=/www.google.com/2.3.4.5 will send queries for *.google.com to 1.2.3.4, except *www.google.com, which will go to 2.3.4.5 this domain name with all the sub-domains is supposed to be forward to my NS server. • What's the meaning of logging in as "[email protected]:something"

  My Windows 2008 R2 machine is joined to a domain. In the logon screen, if I type in "[email protected]:something" as the username, I can still logon properly, what's the meaning of ":something" appended at the end? I can even see the current user is displayed as "[email protected]:something" in the switch user screen. Is it a feature in Windows? Or is it just a bug? If it is a feature, what's the difference between logging in as "username@mydomain.com" and logging in as "[email protected]:something"? Note that I tried different combinations like "mydomain\username:something" and "mydomain.com:something\username". None of them work except "[email protected]:something".

  In my network, I've some Ubuntu machines which need to download files from nl.archive.ubuntu.com. Since it's quite a waste of time to download everything multiple times, I've setup a squid proxy for caching the data. Another use for this proxy was rewriting requests for archive.ubuntu.com or *.archive.ubuntu.com to nl.archive.ubuntu.com because this mirror is faster than the US mirrors. This has worked quite well, but after a recent install of my caching machine, the configuration was lost. I remember having a separate perl program for handling this rewrite. How do I setup such a squid proxy which rewrites the host *.example.com to www.example.com and cache the result of the latter?

There are multiple ways to resolve this error. Readers has contributed various methods. Few of them even have supplied the answer why this error is showing up. NULL are very important part of the database and if one of the column has NULL the result can be totally different than the one expected. SQL SERVER – T-SQL Scripts to Find Maximum between Two Numbers I modified script provided by friend to find greatest number between two number. My script has small bug in it. However, lots of readers have suggested better scripts. Madhivanan has written blog post on the subject over here. SQL SERVER – BI Quiz Hint – Performance Tuning Cubes – Hints This quiz is hosted on my friend Jacob‘s site. I have written many hints how one can tune cubes. Now one can take part here and win exciting prizes. SQL SERVER – Solution – Generating Zero Without using Any Numbers in T-SQL Madhivanan has asked very interesting question on his blog about How to Generate Zero without using Any Numbers in T-SQL. He has demonstrated various methods how one can generate Zero. I asked the same question on blog and got many interesting answers which I have shared. SQL SERVER – Solution – Puzzle – Statistics are not Updated but are Created Once I have to accept that this was most difficult puzzle. In this puzzle I have asked even though settings are correct, why statistics of the tables are not getting updated. In this puzzle one is tested with various concepts 1) Indexes, 2) Statistics, 3) database settings etc. There are multiple ways of solving this puzzles. It was interesting as many took interest but only few got it right. SQL SERVER – Question to You – When to use Function and When to use Stored Procedure This is rather straight forward question and not the typical puzzle. The answers from readers are great however, still there is chance of more detailed answers. SQL SERVER – Selecting Domain from Email Address I wrote on selecting domains from email addresses. Madhivanan makes puzzle out of a simple question. He wrote a follow-up post over here. In his post he writes various way how one can find email addresses from list of domains.
