• How to prioritize tasks when you have multiple programming projects running in parallel?

  Say you have 5 customers, you develop 2 or 3 different projects for each. Each project has Xi tasks. Each project takes from 2 to 10 man weeks. Given that there are few resources, it is desired to minimize the management overhead. Two questions in this scenario: What tools would you use to prioritize the tasks and track their completion, while tending to minimize the overhead? What criteria would you take into consideration to determine which task to assign to the next available resource given that the primary objective is to increase throughput (more projects finished per time unit, this objective conflicts with starting one project and finishing it and then moving on to the next)? • How to deal with readers requesting free advice / support on my blog? [closed]

  I have a handful of popular articles on my blog (nothing huge), and they attract the occasional developer who wants help implementing some code grabbed from my blog. Now I'm getting people who haven't made any attempt to learn the code, email me their code, and expect me to trace it through for them. I'm sure anyone with a half-popular blog gets similar requests. What's the best way to deal with this scenario? I want to put together a boilerplate response including these points: How far have you gone with this on your own? (is it any benefit for anyone if I say they are being imposing) I'm happy to help with any problems you find in my code Point them to other forms of help such as stackoverflow, diagnostic tools relevant to the topic.

• How to redirect a international domain to a subfolder on the English site without hurting Google rankings?

  I have two sites: www.example.de www.main.com www.main.com is English version of www.example.de which is in German. I want to keep only www.main.com. For the English version I will keep www.main.com, but for German I want to move it to www.main.com/de. I am wondering what would be best solution for old www.example.de: Redirect everything from www.example.de to www.main.com/de using 301 redirect? Redirect everything from www.example.de towww.main.com/de/page-url-of-old-size.html? So each link actually get own address. Is that necessary or will Google realize where the page belongs on new site even if I redirect everything to home page? Any other solution, maybe just set in Google webmaster tools the new domain or anything like that?

  We've been examining a number of different SEO tools recently. Several of these tell us that some of our page title's, urls and meta descriptions are too long. We've also been told that some of our pages have too many links on them. I guess our first question is - is any of that feedback true! Can URL's etc actually be too long and if so how much does this affect ranking? Secondly can you have too many links on a page and if so, how many is too many? Thanks in advance...

• "// ..." comments at end of code block after } - good or bad?

  I've often seen such comments be used: function foo() { ... } // foo while (...) { ... } // while if (...) { ... } // if and sometimes even as far as if (condition) { ... } // if (condition) I've never understood this practice and thus never applied it. If your code is so long that you need to know what this ending } is then perhaps you should consider splitting it up into separate functions. Also, most developers tools are able to jump to the matching bracket. And finally the last is, for me, a clear violation to the DRY principle; if you change the condition you would have to remember to change the comment as well (or else it could get messy for the maintainer, or even for you). So why do people use this? Should we use it, or is it bad practice?

• Google search preview shows content not on the website

  My website google search entry is messed up. In the preview in google search results, I get things like cracks, serials, random ip addresses. I scanned all files and my computer for viruses and malware and could not find anything. I also tried to download and reupload all content from a friend's computer and still that content persists. I also scanned the source code of all files, but the content does not appear in any file. Google also does not detect any malware on the website, as seen in their webmaster tools. I have searched using the same keywords in other search engines such as bing and yahoo and the search results there are fine. I am quite clueless as to what the causes would be for this and what would be a possible remedy.

• What things to take into consideration when refactoring code?

  Code refactoring is a "disciplined technique for restructuring an existing body of code, altering its internal structure without changing its external behavior" Could anyone explain this definition? I find it kind of blurry. Which is the best technique to do it? Are these the only ones? Which are the obstacles one would meet when refactoring code? What to take into consideration when switching between IDEs? Do tools which help refactoring exist? If yes, which one would you recommend using? Any references to links where I can find out more on this subject or to books that have been written are welcomed. The questions above are for any programming language, but specific examples are appreciated. Anything that would clarify this for me is.

• Where is EasUS coming from?

  I have downloaded the Universal USB Installer and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop as described on your site. I installed it to a 16Gb USB stick including the format option. Now when I try to boot from the stick into Ubuntu I get a couple of lines of script then a screen with EasUS Todo Backup with Backup. Recovery, Clone and Tools options, but no sign of Ubuntu starting. Where is the start Ubuntu option please? I can find no reference to EaseUS on your help pages.

• How to add SMS text messaging functionality to my website?

  I want to add the ability to send reminders to people via email and SMS for specific events that they have signed up for on a web application that I am building. The email part is not difficult, but I am wondering where to find a good solution for sending SMS messages. It would also be a plus if this solution allowed two-way SMS communication with my web application so that people would be able to reply with a CONFIRM or CANCEL type of a message. Has anyone implemented something like this? Does anyone know of good tools out there? In this website I want users to register and also participate in something like a browser game, where every user may receive some questions which they have to answer. For each question they successfully answered, they receive points and the number of collected points will decide on which rank they are.   My website was ranking on page one for "walking shoes reviews" in broad and exact. It has disappeared in the rankings for broad and yet still ranks in exact match. No indication in the Webmaster tools of anything wrong yet Google analytics shows no more activity. his occurred sometime after Panda and Penguin. Not sure which because I didn't check closely for a while, this is a fun site for me. I walk for the enjoyment and health benefits so I built this site.

• Benefits of TOGAF or similar?

  I can read the website blurb and be impressed by the alleged benefits, but I haven't worked anywhere or with anyone who followed the TOGAF (or any alternative) architecture framework. Our organisation has declared itself dedicated to moving from what is currently a fairly shambolic design & development model towards something approaching a modern structured process. Things like TOGAF have been mentioned as helping achieve a world-class enterprise development environment (!) but I'm convinced that no-one here really understands the real-world benefits that wholesale adoption might bring and, perhaps more importantly, the effort/pain required to achieve the same. Do you have experience in using TOGAF or similar to wrestle control in an organisation? Do you think that use of the framework brought any benefit? • wine: x development files not found

  I downloaded the wine-1.4-rc5.tar.bz2. I ran the tools/wineinstall in terminal. After some time I get this error. checking for X... no configure: error: X development files not found. Wine will be built without X support, which probably isn't what you want. You will need to install development packages of Xlib/Xfree86 at the very least. Use the --without-x option if you really want this. Configure failed, aborting install. I am using Ubuntu 10.04. The installation won't finish. Can I fix this and make wine install ?

  The place I work is now looking into developing a new e-commerce site on the Magento platform. Magento will fill all of our needs. I was just wondering if it is in anyway unprofessional doing it this way (Impression is something we are really worried about), will people who visit the site look at our business different knowing we used Magento or any other e-commerce platform. There are ways to find out. I use Chrome Sniffer to find out what platforms are used to develop each site, there are other tools available for different browsers.
