• Debugging .NET 2.0 assembly from unmanaged code in VS2010?

  I’ve run into a serious snag trying to debug a .NET 2.0 assembly that is called from unmanaged code in Visual Studio 2010. I maintain a host of components that using COM interop and custom .NET runtime hosting and ever since installing Visual Studio 2010 I’ve been utterly blocked by VS 2010’s inability to apparently debug .NET 2.0 assemblies when launching through unmanaged code. Here’s what I’m actually doing (simplified scenario to demonstrate): I have a .NET 2.0 assembly that is compiled for COM Interop Compile project with .NET 2.0 target and register for COM Interop Set a breakpoint in the .NET component in one of the class methods Instantiate the .NET component via COM interop and call method The result is that the COM call works fine but the debugger never triggers on the breakpoint. If I now take that same assembly and target it at .NET 4.0 without any other changes everything works as expected – the breakpoint set in the assembly project triggers just fine. The easy answer to this problem seems to be “Just switch to .NET 4.0” but unfortunately the application and the way the runtime is actually hosted has a few complications. Specifically the runtime hosting uses .NET 2.0 hosting and apparently the only reliable way to host the .NET 4.0 runtime is to use the new hosting APIs that are provided only with .NET 4.0 (which all by itself is lame, lame, lame as once again the promise of backwards compatibility is broken once again by .NET). So for the moment I need to continue using the .NET 2.0 hosting APIs due to application requirements. I’ve been searching high and low and experimenting back and forth, posted a few questions on the MSDN forums but haven’t gotten any hints on what might be causing the apparent failure of Visual Studio 2010 to debug my .NET 2.0 assembly properly when called from un-managed code. Incidentally debugging .NET 2.0 targeted assemblies works fine when running with a managed startup application – it seems the issue is specific to the unmanaged code starting up. My particular issue is with custom runtime hosting which at first I thought was the problem. But the same issue manifests when using COM Interop against a .NET 2.0 assembly, so the hosting is probably not the issue. • RedirectToAction help: or better suggestion

  Still getting my feet wet with asp.net mvc. I have a working Action and httppost action but I want to replace the "iffy" code with a RedirectToAction call because the code is rather large for what it does. A call using RedirectToAction would clean it up more. Every way I've tried it fails to work for me in that the drop down list fails to have the proper item selected. The code below works fine but calling RedirectToAction the was I have been does not work for me. So how can i rework the code below to use RedirectToAction ? • IIS6 - 301 permanent redirect response accessing an asp.net web site

  I've installed an ASP.NET 2.0 virtual directory application on the default web site in IIS6 (Windows 2003 computer) with a Visual Studio generated web deployment setup. Unfortunately, following a successfull installation, I'm unable to access our web site. I get a permanent redirect from IIS as shown in the log below : 2010-02-25 15:32:41 W3SVC1 127.0.0.1 GET /naweb3 - 80 - 127.0.0.1 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+8.0;+Windows+NT+5.2;+Trident/4.0;+.NET+CLR+1.1.4322;+.NET+CLR+2.0.50727;+.NET+CLR+3.0.04506.30;+.NET+CLR+3.0.4506.2152;+.NET+CLR+3.5.30729) 301 0 0 This is the first time I have this kind of problem. Before I go with completely resetting IIS6 on this machine, I'm wondering what could cause this problem. The virtual directory configuration seems fine to me, no redirection at all at this level.   I've tried wrapping my <system.web> with <location path="." InheritInChildApplications="false"> like this <location path="." InheritInChildApplications="false"> <system.web>...</system.web> </location> But VS 2010 Web Developer Express keeps saying "The 'InheritInChildApplications' attribute is not allowed" and when I run my web app there's an error: "HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid." Config Error Unrecognized attribute 'InheritInChildApplications'. I've seen some smartguys all over the Internet discussing this and how it is working for them but there's much larger number of people here at SO and other places that did not get this to work. • How to throw a SqlException(need for mocking)

  Hi I am trying to test some exceptions in my project and one of the Exceptions I catch is SQlException. Now It seems that you can't go new SqlException() so I am not sure how I can throw a exception especially without somehow calling the database(and since it is unit tests it is usually advised not to call the database since it is slow). So I am using nunit and moq so I am not sure how to fake this. Edit Based on the answers they seem to all be based on ado.net I am using linq to sql. So that stuff is like behind the scenes. • Windows Live Writer plugin with .NET 4

  Has anyone written a plugin for Windows Live Writer that runs against .NET 4? I've read the .NET 4 introduces side-by-side running, so one part of the app can target .NET x and another part can target .NET 4. I thought WLW would be a good starting point to try this as previously it only supported plugins up to .NET 2. But my .NET 4 plugin never shows. Maybe they test dependencies before loading the plugins? Anyone else got this working?

• How do I get Nant to use the 4.0 compiler to target .Net 3.5

  Yes I know that sounds a little bit crazy, but I've got .Net 3.5 deployed in the field and I'd like to use the new 4.0 compiler to target it. There are several new syntactic sugar features in the latest versions of Vb.Net and C# which I would like to use,but I am unable (just yet) to enforce a new version of the .Net framework and CLR on my client base. Before the nay sayers jump in with both feet... I have just successfully used Studio 2010 to compile a 3.5 targeted app which used VB.Net auto properties (A new feature in VB.Net 10) so I know the compilers are capable somehow. So back to my question.... How do I convince Nant to use the 4.0 compiler, but to target .Net 3.5 (CLR 2.0) Update: I am using the csc and vbc tasks and not the Solution task. although I'd settle for an answer on how to do this direct with the compilers at this point.

  I have a View that renders something like this: "Item 1" and "Item 2" are <tr> elements from a table. After the user change "Value 1" or "Value 2" I would like to call a Controller and put the result (some HTML snippet) in the div marked as "Result of...". I have some vague notions of JQuery. I know how to bind to the onchange event of the Select element, and call the $.ajax() function, for example. But I wonder if this can be achieved in a more efficient way in ASP.NET MVC2.

• JsonResult shows up a file download in browser

  I'm trying to use jquery.Ajax to post data to an ASP.NET MVC2 action method that returns a JsonResult. Everything works great except when the response gets back to the browser it is treated as a file download instead of being passed into the success handler. • NDjango throws TypeLoadException

  Hi All, I'm just trying to get started with NDjango but am having issues running a basic test app. When running the page in either debug or release the following exception is thrown: Could not load type 'Microsoft.FSharp.Core.CompilerMessageAttribute' from assembly 'FSharp.Core, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'. This is thrown when the NDjangoHandle is created in the HttpApplication ctor. The fsharp assemblies are definitely all there in the gac (and they seem to be distributed with NDjango too) so I'm a bit confused about this one. Googling this turns up zip. I'm using NDjango 0.9.7.0 for .NET 4.0 in vis studio 2010 Cheers

• IIS 7.0 - Every site suddenly redirecting root request to forms authentication

  Suddenly, IIS 7.0 is redirecting every request for the root of any domain hosted on the box to ~/Account/Logon, which is our Forms Authentication redirect. Additionally, some JavaScript and image requests are being similarly redirected, but not other aspx pages. This is not desirable. Nobody will admit to changing anything. Any ideas? EDIT: It turns out that something has gone wrong with the disk permissions. Can anyone point me to the way things are supposed to be in Windows Server 2008 for a standard ASP.Net installation? The disk permissions are out of whack now.

I am looking to create a confirm password field using asp.net MVC2 that works on the client. All my other client validation is done with MicrosoftMvcValidation.js by just adding the Html.EnableClientValidation(); call. Some of my considerations. Should the confirm password be part of the model object? Using that approach i have created server side validation by creating my own model binder. Are there any projects out there that have done this?

  Environment: ASP.NET web applicaition jQuery, ASP.NET AJAX Currently using ASP.NET Web Services The title says it all. One, how do i create an ASP.NET web service that is asynchronous? I've seen many articles, that show example with IAsyncResult and BeginMyWebServiceMethod and EndMyWebServiceMethod, some using ThreadPool etc. I would just like to know what is the simplest way to make an asynchronous web service method call (ideally without having to implement other classes, if possible). To me it should be as simple as adding an attribute to the method (but I think that is wishful thinking), e.g. public SomeWebService : WebService { [Asynchronous] public static bool SomeCheck() { // code } } I'm open to using WCF if that makes it easier (we converted to ASP.NET 3.5 around Christmas time). Once I have the asynchronous web service created, what is the best way to call it from client-side script? Via jQuery's $ajax or ASP.NET's auto generated class for a web service that is script method?

I also have the following installed on my PC: Microsoft .Net Framework v1.0.3705 Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 Microsoft .Net Framework v4.0.30319 I'm not sure why, but I can't start "Mscorcfg.msc" the usual way (as suggested in the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2bc0cxhc(VS.80).aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2bc0cxhc.aspx URL). I looked for "Mscorcfg.msc" on my PC and found only 1 occurence (in the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder). When I double-click on the .msc file in Windows Explorer, I get the "MMC could not create the snap-in." message. What should I do ? Thanks

• Better performance to Query the DB or Cache small result sets?

  Say I need to populate 4 or 5 dropdowns w/ items from a database. Each drop down will have < 15 items in it. These items almost never change. Now I could query the DB each time the page is accessed or I could grab the values from a custom class that would check to see if they already exist in ASP.Net's cache and only if they don't query the DB to update the cache. It's trivial for me to write but I'm unsure if the performace would be better or not. I think it would be (although not likely anything huge). What do you think?

• Is passing a Command object/Reader to a function a good idea?

  I've been getting some inexplicable errors (running out of connections from the connection pool) with MySql database with .Net 4 (C#). Till now all my attempts at finding a reason for this have been in vain. Now I also have a situation in which a lock on a table is not cleared for a long time even though all I have been doing is read operations from it. My code looks okay (I've put all readers and connections in using blocks). The only anomaly I have is that I've been passing MySqlCommand and MySqlDataReader objects as parameters to functions who work with them. That doesn't seem like a bad idea for me because it avoids some repetition (DRY!). But since I can't find any other explanation I have to suspect that this is causing the problem. What do you think?

• How to handle Foreign key for optional field in .NET

  What is the best way to handle following situation? A dropdown(for master table) is optional in a particular form. But, In database table the field is constrained with foreign key. If user don't select from dropdown then It creates problem because of foreign key. One solution is to create default option in master table and use it in case of blank selection. but in dropdown, we need to handle this to show on top. Is it perfect solution? Is there any other optimized solution for this? Thanks
