  • Developing a project which is an implementation of an open standard/protocol

    Hi, A lot of interesting code/projects are implementations of protocols, eg SNMP. How are projects like these, which depend on implementing a certain format, developed? Is the process something like get the guidelines of the protocol and then implement code which follows it. For example, XML-RPC is about transmitting XML docs between client/server, so the documentation on this protocol must outline the structure of the XML documents and then the way the transportation between client and server works, so the coder will implement this sort of functionality (xml doc construction, networking between the client and server). Projects I am thinking of (not to develop) are C# libraries which can interpret .PSDs, make VHDs, etc. So if I was to develop a C# app to implement .AI files (Illustrator files), what would be the steps I would look at (such as contacting Adobe, etc)? Is this the way such projects are developed?

  • storing huge amount of records into classic asp cache object is SLOW

    we have some nasty legacy asp that is performing like a dog and i narrowed it down to because we are trying to store 15K+ records into the application cache object. but that's not the killer. before it stores it, it converts the ADO stream to XML then stores it. this conversion of the huge record set to XML spikes the CPU and causes all kinds of havoc on users when it's happening. and unfortunately we do this XML conversion to read the cache a lot, causing site wide performance problems. i don't have the resources to convert everything to .net. so that's out. but i need to obviously use caching, but int his case the caching is hurting instead of helping. is there a more effecient way to store this data instead of doing this xml conversion to/from every time we read/update the cache?

  • Why do browsers encode special characters differently with ajax requests?

    I have a web application that reads the values of a few input fields (alphanumeric) and constructs a very simple xml that is passes to the server, using jQuery's $.ajax() method. The template for that xml is: <request> <session>[some-string]</session> <space>[some-string]</space> <plot>[some-string]</plot> ... </request> Sending such requests to the server when the inputs contain Finnish diacritical characters (such as ä or ö) raises a problem in terms of character encoding with different browsers. For instance, if I add the word Käyttötarkoitus" in one of the inputs, here's how Chrome and Firefox send EXACTLY the same request to the server: Chrome: <request> <session>{string-hidden}</session> <space>2080874</space> <plot>Käyttötarkoitus</plot> ... </request> FF 12.0: <request> <session>{string-hidden}</session> <space>2080874</space> <plot>Käyttötarkoitus</plot> ... </request> And here is the code fragment that I use to send the requests: $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: url, dataType: 'xml;charset=UTF-8', data: xml, success: function(xml) { // }, error: function(jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) { // } }); Why do I get different encodings and how do I get rid of this difference?     I am trying to remove a file from a dependency jar that I am including in my war file in maven. I am deploying the war to JBoss 5.1 and the jar in question contains a persistence.xml file that I don't want. Here's what is going on: my-webapp.war | `-- WEB-INF | `-- lib | `-- dependency.jar | `-- META-INF | `-- persistence.xml When I am building my war, I want to remove persistence.xml Any one have any idea if this can be done easily?

  • Serialising and Deserialising Requests and Responses exactly as WCF does

    I need to deserialise SOAP request XML to .Net request object and to serialise .Net response object to SOAP response XML. I need this to work exactly as WCF does, using the same XML element local names and namespace URIs. The .Net request and response classes were generated from WSDL using SVCUTIL. I have looked at XmlSerializer class, which does most of it, but doesn't take notice of certain WCF-specific custom attributes, like MessageBodyMemberAttribute. I also looked at DataContractSerializer, but that had exceedingly strange ideas about what element names and namespaces to use. Finally, I tried XmlSerializer with an XmlTypeMapping generated by a SoapReflectionImporter; this didn't seem to use any namespaces at all. I rather suspect that I need to be using one of the above techniques, but with some additional subtlety, of which I am unaware. But perhaps there is an entirely different approach? All suggestions welcome.

  • Where should I define Enums?

    Hi: I'm setting up a new app, with a Repository layer/assembly, a Services layer/assembly, and a UI assembly. So I end up with namespaces such as: App.UI App.Biz.Services App.Data.Repositories And then I have enums for the args that are used by all 3 layers. Only place that makes sense is to put them in the Cross cutting assembly. (define them in Data layer too low, as UI should have no direct ref to them, defined in Services, too high for Repository layer, which shouldn't be referencing upwards). But...which namespace in Common? Namespaces should mostly be used to define concerns, rather than Type... I've always used something like: namespace App.Common.Enums {...} but it's always felt a bit of a hack that works for me, but not well in a large org where everybody is generating Enums, and if we put them all in Enums folder it's going to make the code folder harder to understand later. Any suggestions?

    I use Ruby on Rails 3 and I have 2 applications (APP1 and APP2) working on two subdomains: app1.domain.local app2.domain.local and I am tryng to run two consecutive HTTP GET requests from APP1 to APP2 like this: Code in APP1 (request): response1 = Net::HTTP.get( URI.parse("http://app2.domain.local?test=first&id=1") ) response2 = Net::HTTP.get( URI.parse("http://app2.domain.local/test=second&id=1") ) Code in APP2 (response): respond_to do |format| if <model_name>.find(params[:id]).<field_name> == "first" <model_name>.find(params[:id]).update_attribute ( <field_name>, <field_value> ) format.xml { render :xml => <model_name>.find(params[:id]).<field_name> } elsif <model_name>.find(params[:id]).<field_name> == "second" format.xml { render :xml => <model_name>.find(params[:id]).<field_name> } end end After the first request I get the correct XML (response1 is what I expect), but on the second it isn't (response2 isn't what I expect). Doing some tests I found that the second time that <model_name>.find(params[:id]).<field_name> run (for the elsif statements) it returns always a blank value so that the code in the elseif statement is never run. Is it possible that the problem is related on caching <model_name>.find(params[:id]).<field_name>? P.S.: I read about eTag and Conditional GET, but I am not sure that I must use that approach. I would like to keep all simple.

I am trying to connect to the a database resource I have in my context.xml file.In gwt 1.5 I had set up root.xml in tomcat-conf-gwt-localhost. I have no idea where to set up the resource in GWT 2.0. I tried placing my context.xml file in war-META-INF with no luck. Anyone have an idea where to place the context.xml file to be able to use a jndi database resource in GWT 2.0? Thanks in advanced

    Hi, I'm trying to create a custom Android control to emulate a LinearLayout with a fancier display. Basically, I want the exact behaviour of a LinearLayout, but also borders, a background, ... I could do it all in XML (works great) but since I have dozens of occurences in my app it's getting hard to maintain. I thought it would be nicer to have something like this: /* Main.xml */ <MyFancyLayout> <TextView /> <ImageView /> </MyfancyLayout> My problem is, I don't want to have to re-write LinearLayout, so is there a way to only change its appearance?   • How is the syntax for stl iterators implemented?

    I've been working on writing a library in my spare time to familiarize myself more with c++ and singular value decomposition. I've been working on writing an Iterator class and I'm entirely capable of writing the functionality and I have already for my own currently MatrixIterator class. I'm guessing that it involves namespaces because: vector<int>::iterator Would appear to be an iterator from the namespace vector, but namespaces are another topic which I'm not familiar with. Mainly I'm asking what would it involve to implement an iterator such that it could be referenced in a similar way to the stl iterators. I'm also aware that I could use boost.iterators or something similar to save myself a lot of work, but I'm more interested in learning all of the details that go into something like this.

    Hi, I have an XML file. My application requires manipulation into that XML file. I will be writing the values into the XML value. I also have interface to display the read contents of the file. The user might add values into that XML (through an interface). Without closing the application he may decide to display the File contents also. Now the problem is, after i write the XML contents into the file, when i view the file through the interface , the values are not getting updated. After i close the application and open it the updated values are available.I am using the following code to achieve this. For writing QXmlStreamWriter and for reading QDomDocument, QDomNodeList. After i complete the writing, I flush and close the file too. lFile.flush(); lFile.close(); After reading also i closed the file. Can someone tell me what am doing wrong??

    This question gets asked periodically, but I've long felt that existing Java logging frameworks were overcomplicated and over-engineered, and I want to see what's new. I have a more critical issue on my current project as we've standardized on JSON as our human-readable data encoding, and most logging frameworks I've seen require XML. I would really rather avoid using JSON for 95% of my apps configuration, and XML for the rest just because of the logging framework (truth be told, I hate XML used for anything other than text markup, its original intended purpose). Are there any hot new Java logging frameworks that are actively maintained, reasonably powerful, have a maven repo, can be reconfigured without restarting your app, and don't tie you to XML?

  • full-text property change on column

    Hello, i'm trying to modify a property of a column (in sql server 2008 r2) which is of xml data type. I want set (Is full-text indexed) to yes, but after I do this and try to save changes, i get an error: 'Abc' table - Unable to modify table. Column: B is not full-text searchable. Column B is not the column I'm modyfing, but it's content is based on the modified xml column (it takes a value from one element in xml). Weird thing is that column B is full-text indexed (in table designer). Any ideas why i cannot apply changes to the xml column?
