• Possible to exclude a column from `*` ?

  Is it possible to exclude a column from a select * from table statement with SQL Server? I have a need for this and this is my only option other than parsing a raw SQL string to get out the required field names (I really don't want to do that). Just to be bold. When the query is made I do not have access to the list of fields needed from the table but I do know which field I do not need. This is part of a complex multi-part query. Surely there must be some way even if it's "hackish" such as using table variables or views

• Continue Drupal processing after page send.

  I need to do some additional processing after a Drupal page has been sent. I know I could fire a background shell command, but I need the current Drupal execution context to be maintained. I've spent a lot of time looking, but I can't find any documentation in this regard. This is surprising because it must surely be a common requirement. The only real idea I have is to fire up Drupal (again) via a shell command (exec, etc) and supply it with a pseudo path which would invoke the continued processing. But this seems unnecessarily complex/wasteful. Any pointers greatly appreciated, tks.

  So far I have: int SimplifyText(char chars[], int length) { //To lower for(int i=0; i<length; i++) { chars[i] = tolower(chars[i]); } This function simplifies the text in the first argument which is an array containing the number of characters as given in the second argument The requirements are: tolower all remove all non-alpha characters replace multiple whitespace by one blank. Any leading whitespace at the beginning of the array should be removed completely. The resulting number of characters should be returned as the value of the function. And the annoying part: Another array cannot appear in the function Cannot use strings, only char arrays. Cannot using G++'s extension for setting an array size using a variable. Oh and can't use regex :) I'm stuck with this, any help would be great. :)

  I am trying to understand how sscanf() works. I ran some examples from this page: http://docs.roxen.com/pike/7.0/tutorial/strings/sscanf.xml and they don't work on my platform. I can't understand why. For instance: "sscanf("4711bar", "%d%s", a, b);" makes the program exit with an error... Here is one of the examples that work: "sscanf("foo", "f%s", a);". Does anybody know why? Do they work on your platforms? Thank you. • What are the disadvantages of using a StringBuilder?

  I know that StringBuilder is more efficient than a normal string when processing code which modifies the string value a lot because although strings act like value types, they are actually reference, which makes them immutable so every time we change it, we need to create a new reference in memory. My question is that, why doesn't .NET just use stringBuilder by default? There must be some disadvantages of it over just using String. Can anyone tell me what they are? The only thing I can think of is perhaps it is a heavier object and it takes more time to instantiate so if you aren't changing the string too much, this would override the benefits of StringBuilder

  First off, the title is very generic because there are just tons of ways of how to possibly solve this. However, I'm looking for a clean and neat way. Situation: I have two equal object files foo.o and foo-pi.o, the latter of which is position-independent (compiled with -fPIC). Both depend on foo.h and bar.h. Problem: How do I, without code duplication, declare dependency of all foo*.o to bar.h? Solutions so far: $(shell bash -c 'echo -ne foo{-pi,}.o'}: bar.h $(addsuffix .o, $(addprefix fo, o-pi o)): bar.h The first solution is not portable on systems that don't support bash, the second is a dirty solution since I could not figure out how to use empty strings in addprefix.

In the code below, if I replace "$TBL_NAME" with the actual table name it works.   I have a table of items (let's call it WIDGET) that each have their own eight-digit barcode numbers stored in a VARCHAR field (let's call it BARCODE; the table's primary key is in a separate integer field ID). My problem is that some personnel have omitted the leading zeros instead of entering the entire number while others have not. All new data is being entered with all eight digits present, but I would like to update all the existing records (several hundred in all) to eight digits for the sake of consistency. 1 → 00000001 234 → 00000234 5678 → 00005678 00009012 → 00009012 I know FrontBase supports all of SQL-92, but SQL-92 has no function specifically for left-padding strings. I already came up with a solution, but I am posting this question to see if anyone can think of a better way of doing this than I did.

  I have the following XML: Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 While this XSL does what is expected (output the attr of the first picture): It seems to be not possible to do the same inside the variable declaration using xsl:copy-of: Curious: If I just select "$FirstPicture" instead of "$FirstPicture/@attr" in the second example, it outputs the text node of Picture 1 as expected... Before you all suggest me to rewrite the code: This is just a simplified test, my real aim is to use a named template to select a node into the variable FirstPicture and reuse it for further selections. I hope someone could help me to understand the behavior or could suggest me a proper way to select a node with code which could be easily reused (the decission which node is the first one is complex in my real application). This means only those characters are allowed in each value. After spending a lot of time trying to understand the regex, I can't find a way to achieve this.   Recently I've bumped into the following C++ code: if (a) { f(); } else if (b) { f(); } else if (c) { f(); } Where a, b and c are all different conditions, and they are not very short. I tried to change the code to: if (a || b || c) { f(); } But the author opposed saying that my change will decrease readability of the code. I had two arguments: 1) You should not increase readability by replacing one branching statement with three (though I really doubt that it's possible to make code more readable by using else if instead of ||). 2) It's not the fastest code, and no compiler will optimize this. But my arguments did not convince him. What would you tell a programmer writing such a code? Do you think complex condition is an excuse for using else if instead of OR?

  Does anyone know of an Eclipse plugin that can give me some stats about my behavior/usage of the Eclipse IDE? There are quite a few things I would like to know: How often/when do I invoke the "Build All" command (through Ctrl+B) How often does compilation fail/succeed (+ number of errors/warnings) How often do I hit Backspace? (I do that way to often; If pressing that key would give a nasty sound I would in time learn to type correctly in the first place) How many characters/lines of code that I typed do I delete (possibly quite immediately) How (effective/efficient/...) is my Mouse/Keyboard/IDE usage? (Kinda like measuring APM in StarCraft; this could be fun) If there is no such Eclipse plugin around, how complex and time consuming would It be to write a plugin that can accomplish the above?

• Memory is leaked only in some machines.

  We've got a situation where our application is leaking memory while doing some periodic action. The test scenario is composed of a series of processes across two relatively complex WPF windows. The weird thing about the situation is that memory only gets leaked on SOME machines, while others, having exactly the same hardware, can be working for really long times (repeating the process every minute) having their memory almost unchanged (once the GC gets rid of used memory, etc). This is .NET + WPF. Any ideas about where to start looking? What can cause leaks in only some machines? (we're talking about a 30 machine test scenario). I have few experience with WPF, could the graphic card had anything to do with it?

  Hello, I am writing a backend application which needs to be able to send multiple SQL commands to a MySQL server. MySQL = 5.x support multiple statements, but unfortunately we are interfacing with MySQL 4.x. I am trying to find a way (hint: regex) to split SQL statements by their semicolon, but it should ignore semicolons in single and double quotes strings. http://www.dev-explorer.com/articles/multiple-mysql-queries has a very nice regex to do that, but doesn't support double quotes. I'd be happy to hear your suggestions.
