• Do you know how to move the Team Foundation Server cache

  There are a number of reasons why you may want to change the folder that you store the TFS Cache. It can take up “some” amount of room so moving it to another drive can be beneficial. This is the source control Cache that TFS uses to cache data from the database. Moving the Cache is pretty easy and should allow you to organise your server space a little more efficiently. You may also get a performance improvement (although small) by putting it on another drive.. Create a new directory to store the Cache. e.g. “d:\TfsCache\” Give the local TFS WPG group full control of the directory Figure: You need to use the App Tier service WPG In the application tier web.config (~\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config) add the following setting (to the appSettings section). <appsettings> ... <add value="D:\" key="dataDirectory" /> ... </appsettings> The app pool will automatically recycle and Team Web Access will start using the new location.  If you then download a file (not via a proxy) a folder with a GUID should be created immediately in the folder from #1.  If the folder doesn’t appear, then you probably don’t have permissions set up properly.

• Is there a smarter Find files utility for Windows 8 than Windows key + F?

  Is there any utility for Windows 8 that will basically do the same thing the old "Find" dialog in Explorer did? Often times (many times a day) I need to find a particular file, and I don't know the name of it or where it is, but I can remember a phrase in it, and approximately when it was written, e.g., it has the phrase "Duckbilled Platypus" in it and was written sometime in the last week. The Find Files functionality in Windows 8 is lame by comparison; I know there are probably geeky ways to jump through hoops and do it, but I don't want to have to write GREP expressions, I want something easy like the old functionality...

• How to procedurally (create) grow an artistic (2D) tree in real-time (L-System?).

  Recently I programmed an L-system module, It got me interested further. I am a Plants vs Zombies junkie as well, really liked the concept of Tree of Wisdom. Would love to create similar procedural art just for fun and learn more. Question: How should I approach the process of creating an artistic tree (2d perhaps with fixed camera/perspective) dynamically? Ideally I would like to start with a plant (only a stem with a leaf) and grow it dynamically using some influence (input/user action) over its structure. These influences may result in different type of branching, curves in branches, its spread, location of fruits, color of flowers, etc. Want it to be really full of life/spirit. :) Plants vs Zombies: Tree of wisdom It would be great to dynamically grow a similar tree, but with lot more variation and animations happening. My Background: Student / Programmer, have used few game engines (Ogre3d, cocos2d, unity). Haven't really programmed directly using openGL, trying to fix that :). I am ready to spend considerable time, Please let me know about the APIs? and how would an expert like you would take on this problem? Why 2D? I think it's easier to solve the problem only considering 2 dimensions. • The best way to learn how to extend Orchard

  We do have tutorials on the Orchard site, but we can't cover all topics, and recently I've found myself more and more responding to forum questions by pointing people to an existing module that was solving a similar problem to the one the question was about. I really like this way of learning by example and from the expertise of others. This is one of the reasons why we decided that modules would by default come in source code form that we compile dynamically. it makes them easy to understand and easier to modify for your own purposes. Hackability FTW! But how do you crack open a module and look at what's inside? You can do it in two different ways. First, you can just install the module from the gallery, directly from your Orchard instance's admin panel. Once you've done that, you can just look into your Modules directory under the web site. There is now a subfolder with the name of the new module that contains a csproj that you can open in Visual Studio or add to your Orchard solution. Second, you can simply download the package (it's NuGet) and rename it to a .zip extension. NuGet being based on Zip, this will open just fine in Windows Explorer: What you want to dig into is the Content/Modules/[NameOfTheModule] folder, which is where the actual code is. • How to handle Real Time Data from a database perspective?

  I have an idea in mind, but it still confuses me the database area. Imagine that I want to show real time data, and using one of the latest browser technologies (web sockets - even using older browsers) it is very easy to show to all observables (user browser) what everyone is doing. Remy Sharp has an example about the simplicity about this. But I still don't get the database part, how would I feed, let's imagine (using Remy game Tron) that I want to save the path for each connected user in a database and if a client wants to see what is going on with a 5 sec delay, he will see that, not only the 5 sec until that moment but the continuation in time ... how can I query a DB like that? SELECT x, y FROM run WHERE time >= DATEADD(second, -5, rundate); is not the recommended path right? and pulling this x in x time ... this is not real data feed correct? If can someone help me understand the Database point of view, I would greatly appreciate.

• Want to tap into a niche market. Do I create new site or bolt on to existing site?

  Hi, After a lot of heard work and a few years of perseverance, I'm seeing regular sales on my website which have been steadily growing over the past year. However, the entrepreneur in me wants tap into a niche market which I've become very interested in. It's possible to bolt on this niche onto my existing site as an additional category, without it looking too out of place; my new category of products would also benefit from the ranking my current site gets. The kind of people who would purchase these new niche products, however, are very particular and obsessive about detail. So, for example, many Vegetarians would not eat in KFC even if they were to introduce a new range of Veggie burgers. So, I thought it best to create a new website and since my existing site was created using an 'old-school' shopping cart and there are many more up-to-date, feature-rich, ones available now, I wanted to use a different shopping cart system. My dilemma is that I already have 2 websites (1 b2c and another b2b site) and maintaining a 2nd b2c site would end up vastly increasing my workload and I fear that I would not be able to pay adequate attention to all the sites. Moreover, the additional customer service work (e.g. answering emails from many separate email accounts) could end up being too confusing and difficult to maintain. The easy answer would be to take on an employee, but I'm just not earning enough to justify this yet. If anyone has any tips or experience they'd like to share, which could help me answer this question, I'd be highly grateful.

  Our small business currently has 3 wireless access points around the building, each with their own SSID. Security is done with WEP (ick) and MAC address filtering (double ick). We are trying to reconfigure the setup, with these goals: wifi roaming between the access points user-based authentication that isn't as annoying as MAC address filtering. 1) The entire building is hardwired with ethernet, so I assume it should be easy to set up the routers to act as one big network, but I can't figure out how. Can someone point me in the right direction? The routers are consumer-grade linksys routers, is it possible to do this without getting new hardware? 2) For security, we will probably upgrade to WPA2, and I'm thinking of using the Enterprise version so that users can log in with a username, instead of having a single key (so if an employee leaves or something, their access can be removed). We have several on-site Windows servers, can one of them be set up as a RADIUS server, or is that best left to a dedicated machine (again, using existing hardware is good).

• Installing Office 2010 without through group policy without an msi

  I have been breaking my head for several days now trying to install Microsoft office 2010 through group policy. Unfortunately Microsoft decided it would be fun to release office without an MSI and so I either 1) need to create an msi for it or 2) need to install it through a logon script that would run the setup.exe from a network location. Any advise would be greatlly appreciated. I tried to create a script but even though I double click it and it runs properly, it does not seem to kick in when users log in or when the machine is turned on. Also is there an easy way to create an msi? thanks! -Ri

• What's the best practice to do SOA exception handling?

  Here's some interesting debate going on between me and my colleague when coming to handle SOA exceptions: On one side, I support what Juval Lowy said in Programming WCF Services 3rd Edition: As stated at the beginning of this chapter, it is a common illusion that clients care about errors or have anything meaningful to do when they occur. Any attempt to bake such capabilities into the client creates an inordinate degree of coupling between the client and the object, raising serious design questions. How could the client possibly know more about the error than the service, unless it is tightly coupled to it? What if the error originated several layers below the service—should the client be coupled to those lowlevel layers? Should the client try the call again? How often and how frequently? Should the client inform the user of the error? Is there a user? By having all service exceptions be indistinguishable from one another, WCF decouples the client from the service. The less the client knows about what happened on the service side, the more decoupled the interaction will be. On the other side, here's what my colleague suggest: I believe it’s simply incorrect, as it does not align with best practices in building a service oriented architecture and it ignores the general idea that there are problems that users are able to recover from, such as not keying a value correctly. If we considered only systems exceptions, perhaps this idea holds, but systems exceptions are only part of the exception domain. User recoverable exceptions are the other part of the domain and are likely to happen on a regular basis. I believe the correct way to build a service oriented architecture is to map user recoverable situations to checked exceptions, then to marshall each checked exception back to the client as a unique exception that client application programmers are able to handle appropriately. Marshall all runtime exceptions back to the client as a system exception, along with the stack trace so that it is easy to troubleshoot the root cause. I'd like to know what you think about this? • Exchange ActiveSync does not work for one user

  One particular user in our system is unable to connect to Exchange ActiveSync via her iPhone. When I try to connect using my own credentials on her iPhone it works (everything begins syncing), but when I input her credentials, the Settings app verifies the credentials are correct but nothing syncs. For example, if I open Mail, no items are shown. When I attempt to force a sync, it says "Cannot connect to server." In Exchange 2010 Management Console the user is no different than the others. Exchange ActiveSync is set as "Enable" in Mailbox Features. EDIT: Alternatively, if there is some easy way to create a new useraccount/mailbox and copy all of the contents of the old one over, I bet it would work, and that would be fine as well. She is a Mac user so we do not have to worry about her Active Directory account.

• Which converting format of Calibre will keep a MOBI ebook's formatting together?

  I've got a MOBI/Kindle book and I want to convert it to a format that's easy to markup, make notes etc. but when I try to convert to TXT or PDF the result is awful. Are any of the other formats in Calibre's conversion options easily opened on any computer; any of the other formats offered by Calibre fare better after a MOBI conversion? On a side note, are there other programs that will convert a MOBI book better than Calibre? One that will keep the formatting... Win 7. IE 9.

• Upgrading Fedora on Amazon to 12 but getting libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing

  I am upgrading to Fedora 12 on a Amazon EC2 using help here: http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/894/fedora-12-bootable-root-ebs-on-ec2/ I managed to do a 64 bit instance OK, however facing some problems with a standard one. On the final bit of the install from 11 to 12 I am getting an error: Error: Missing Dependency: libcrypto.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: libssl.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) This is referenced in the comments from the link above but all it says is: Q: Apache failed, or libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing A: These versions are mssing the symlinks they require. Easy fix, go symlink them to the newest versions in /lib However I am afraid I don't know how to do this. If it is any help I tried running the command locate libssl.so and got: /lib/libssl.so.0.9.8b /lib/libssl.so.6

• KISS principle applied to programming language design?

  KISS ("keep it simple stupid", see e.g. here) is an important principle in software development, even though it apparently originated in engineering. Citing from the wikipedia article: The principle is best exemplified by the story of Johnson handing a team of design engineers a handful of tools, with the challenge that the jet aircraft they were designing must be repairable by an average mechanic in the field under combat conditions with only these tools. Hence, the 'stupid' refers to the relationship between the way things break and the sophistication available to fix them. If I wanted to apply this to the field of software development I would replace "jet aircraft" with "piece of software", "average mechanic" with "average developer" and "under combat conditions" with "under the expected software development / maintenance conditions" (deadlines, time constraints, meetings / interruptions, available tools, and so on). So it is a commonly accepted idea that one should try to keep a piece of software simple stupid so that it easy to work on it later. But can the KISS principle be applied also to programming language design? Do you know of any programming languages that have been designed specifically with this principle in mind, i.e. to "allow an average programmer under average working conditions to write and maintain as much code as possible with the least cognitive effort"? If you cite any specific language it would be great if you could add a link to some document in which this intent is clearly expressed by the language designers. In any case, I would be interested to learn about the designers' (documented) intentions rather than your personal opinion about a particular programming language.

• Sprite Sheets in PyGame?

  So, I've been doing some googling, and haven't found a good solution to my problem. My problem is that I'm using PyGame, and I want to use a Sprite Sheet for my player. This is all well and good, and it would be too, if I wasn't using a Sprite Sheet strip. Basically, if you don't understand, I have a strip of 32x32 'frames'. These frames are all in an image, along side each other. So, I have 3 frames in 1 image. I'd like to be able to use them as my sprite sheet, and not have to crop them up. I have used an awesome, popular and easy-to-use game framework for Lua called LÖVE. LÖVE has these things called "Quads". They are similar to texture regions in LibGDX, if you know what they are. Basically, quads allow you to get parts of an image. You define how large a quad is, and you define parts of an image that way, or 'regions' of an image. I would like to do something similar to this in PyGame, and use a "for" loop to go through the entire image width and height and mark each 32x32 area (or whatever the user defines as their desired frame width and height) and store that in a list or something for use later on. I'd define an animation speed and stuff, but that's for later on. I've been looking around on the web, and I can't find anything that will do this. I found 1 script on the PyGame website, but it crashed PyGame when I tried to run it. I tried for hours trying to fix it, but no luck. So, is there a way to do this? Is there a way to get regions of an image? Am I going about this the wrong way? Is there a simpler way to do this? Thanks! :-)

• Eris Update to 2.1 &ndash; No Problems

  I updated my Eris to Android’s 2.1 OS last night and everything went pretty well. I had wanted to update the phone mainly for two reasons. The first was to have the Navigation feature of the Google Maps application and to make YouTube work again. YouTube used to work on the phone and then stopped a few weeks ago. But before I started I looked around various forums and blogs to see what doom and gloom folks were talking about the update. Based on what I read and some common sense I used the following steps: Made sure there was a good charge on the phone. Connected to our WiFi (the download is about 77 megs, not very 3G friendly). Checked that the contacts were synced with the GMail account. As a precaution I copied off any music and pictures from the SD card to my laptop. Started the update process and waited for the download and installation to complete. It took maybe 30 minutes to do everything. After the update I re-synced the contacts and tested out the phone (it does make calls after all). I did need to download the text to speech application to get the Maps Navigation to work but that was easy enough since the application prompted me to download it. • Compressing 2D level data

  So, I'm developing a 2D, tile based game and a map maker thingy - all in Java. The problem is that recently I've been having some memory issues when about 4 maps are loaded. Each one of these maps are composed of 128x128 tiles and have 4 layers (for details and stuff). I already spent a good amount of time searching for solutions and the best thing I found was run-length enconding (RLE). It seems easy enough to use with static data, but is there a way to use it with data that is constantly changing, without a big drop in performance? In my maps, supposing I'm compressing the columns, I would have 128 rows, each with some amount of data (hopefully less than it would be without RLE). Whenever I change a tile, that whole row would have to be checked and I'm affraid that would slow down too much the production (and I'm in a somewhat tight schedule). Well, worst case scenario I work on each map individually, and save them using RLE, but it would be really nice if I could avoind that. EDIT: What I'm currently using to store the data for the tiles is a 2D array of HashMaps that use the layer as key and store the id of the tile in that position - like this: private HashMap< Integer, Integer [][]

• Changing the RSS and Dynamic Views layout when using Blogger as a Podcast index

  I'm trying to set up a podcast service at present. This is just a 'spare time' task - so I wanted a quick, easy way to do it. To get this working: I've ripped (with owner permission) some YouTube content across to MP3 and hosted this content on Azure Blob Storage. I've posted blog posts - with linked mp3 content - inside a Blogger website. I've registered the RSS feed with iTunes This all seems to be working OK - http://dotnetmobilepodcast.blogspot.co.uk/ However, when it comes to a couple of final touches, then I'm hitting problems. RSS I would like to add iTunes metadata to the RSS feed. However, I can't find any way to do this inside the Blogger system. To workaround this I've tried using FeedBurner with its StreamCast plugin. However, the output from FeedBurner doesn't seem to be accepted by iTunes - e.g. http://feeds.feedburner.com/MobileAppCSharpPodcasts leads to this very unhelpful 11111 message: Is there any other way I can get this iTunes metadata content into the Blogger RSS feed - e.g. maybe an alternative service or a Yahoo! Pipe? Showing the MP3 files in the Blog I'm trying to work out how to automatically display the linked enclosures inside the blog posts - do the blogger Dynamic Views don't seem to have any way of doing this? I've found the HTML in those views very difficult to follow. If necessary I can workaround this using manual entries into each blog post... but I'd prefer to do this programatically if I can.

• Country specific content vs global content

  I have a global product presentation website myproduct.com For certain countries I also own the country domain: myproduct.co.uk, myproduct.com.au, myproduct.es, myproduct.de, etc. The presentation website is translated in multiple languages and I set up redirects: myproduct.es will redirect to myproduct.com/es/, myproduct.de will redirect to myproduct.com/de/, etc. . The content so far is the same, just translated in different languages. The advantages are that it's easy to keep the content aligned - everything is managed from one centralized dashboard (I'm using Wordpress with qtranslate). Now I'm running into trouble as for different countries I want localized content - for UK I want to run different promotions and use a different reseller than for .com.au so I would like that users coming from myproduct.co.uk see something different than those coming from myproduct.com.au (and not be redirected to myproduct.com as they are right now). How can I achieve this? I could duplicate the whole main website and modify only certain parts but then I would have a lot of duplicate content (e.g. info about how the product works) and I would have pages that are likely to change (FAQ page) that I would have to keep updated over all websites. I can duplicate only partially the main website: on the localized website I would have only the pages that are different and then all other links would point to the .com site. This would solve the duplication problem but would cause confusion for the user as you would navigate from .co.uk to .com without noticing and then wonder how to get back. Other, better option?

• Is it worth running nessus as well as OpenVAS?

  Apparently OpenVAS originated as a fork of Nessus. It is very easy to install and use OpenVAS because it's, well, open. However, am I kidding myself if I just use that instead of Nessus? Should I be using both, or if I use Nessus then is OpenVAS surplus to requirements? To break it down into non-subjective sub-questions: * Is openvas a superset or subset of nessus? * Is one updated more often than the other? * Does one have a bigger vulnerability database than the other? * ...or are there other qualitative differences that I may be missing?

• VNC grey screen and start on boot 12.04

  I have 12.04 LTS installed and I am trying to get VNC to work. I want to be able to connect to existing sessions, and have it start on boot. I followed this guide and have left a comment to try and fix my problems but no dice. I have also tried all solutions I have found on google, including the one here, but I could not get it to work (I am missing something easy I am sure). When I connect to the VNC session I get a grey screen with three checkboxes: Accept clipboard from viewers Send clipboard to viewers Send primary selection to viewers Here is my xstartup: #!/bin/sh # Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop: unset SESSION_MANAGER # exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc gnome-session -session=gnome-classic & [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey vncconfig -iconic & #x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" & #x-window-manager & I have also edited my to include: /usr/bin/vncserver -geometry 1024x768 It does not start on boot, but when I run the command it starts, but I get the grey screen.
