  • How to install new system (with new applications) without removing /home

    - by Innuendo
I'd like to update to 11.04 from 10.10 (but I don't like upgrading system, I prefer full reinstalling) I'd like to install whole new system, but I want to keep my /home folders (Music, Movies, Documents and so on). If I keep /home while installing - this will keep all my program settings too (but I have lots of trash there too, and 'd like to clean it too). Can I delete all .folders in /home and then reinstall system (keeping old /home) ?

  • Introduction to Agile Development

    - by Grant Fritchey
Even though my current job is a little weird, I still consider myself to be a DBA. I didn’t start that way in IT. I came through support and into development. I loved development. There was a constant struggle to attempt to improve your code, your understanding, and, most importantly, the process of development itself. Development can be slow and tedious. Left alone, developers can simply disappear to build a project and not come back for two years, at which time they deliver it. But, maybe that software isn’t what you wanted, or it’s no longer needed, or who knows what. So developers are constantly attempting to improve their processes in order to deliver more relavent software quicker (something DBAs could learn about). I really admire it. One of the many processes that has come out of that constant striving is known as Agile. As the name implies, Agile development attempts to come up with a quick, fast turning, business aware, well, for want of a word, agile, process that is more responsive to the needs of the business. There are tons and tons of books and blogs and videos on the subject that can get you going. But, Agile isn’t easy (note, Easy is not part of the name). Agile processes can be hard. I’ve worked on multiple agile teams, some successful, some not. The two principal differences between the teams were their discipline and their knowledge of the process. Discipline, that comes from within. But knowledge, ah, well there I can help. Red Gate is bringing a series of free instructional events to the United States in a few weeks time focused primarily on SQL Server (click here right now to register while there’s still space). We’re also offering some .NET instruction too. That’s a full day, free, with top experts in the business. But, the next day, there’s a full day session introducing Agile. You can go to this and learn how to do Agile. Develop that knowledge that will enable you to successfully use the Agile process. Go to this web site to check it out. No, this event is not free, but not everything can be. And it’s not just for developers. DBAs, you need to learn this stuff too. Management could also benefit from understanding these processes (because you guys can help to enforce discipline). It’s really for everyone involved in the development process.

  • How to change screen resolution for installation

    - by Embercastle
I am trying to install Unity on an old computer with a 1.7 ghz cpu but the installation windows only show the top quarter of the window (so unable to see or select all the prompts in the window). I have tired going to system settings, but because I cannot see all of windows, I cannot change system settings to make the resolution smaller. Is there any way to change the resolution so that I can see the full window so that I can complete the installation?

  • How do I render from one render target to another?

    - by Chaotikmind
    I have two render targets: a fake backbuffer; a special render target where I do all my rendering. a light render target; where I render my light fx. I'm sure I'm rendering correctly on both. The problem arises when I overlay the light render target onto the fake backbuffer by drawing a quad covering it: DxEngine.DrawSprite(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, (float)DxEngine.GetWidth(), (float)DxEngine.GetHeight(), 0xFFFFFFFF, LightSurface->GetTexture()); Regardless of what's in the light target, nothing is rendered onto the other target. I tried clearing the light target with full-white or full-black, but still get nothing. Fake backbuffer created with Direct3dDev->CreateTexture(Width, Height, 1, D3DUSAGE_RENDERTARGET, D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8, D3DPOOL_DEFAULT, &Texture, nullptr); Light render target created with Direct3dDev->CreateTexture(Width, Height, 1, D3DUSAGE_RENDERTARGET, D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8, D3DPOOL_DEFAULT, &Texture, nullptr); I also tried to create both with D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8, again without difference. Both targets have the same width and height. Only the fixed pipeline is used DirectX setup for rendering : Direct3dDev->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_MINFILTER, D3DTEXF_LINEAR ); Direct3dDev->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_MAGFILTER, D3DTEXF_LINEAR ); Direct3dDev->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_MIPFILTER, D3DTEXF_NONE ); Direct3dDev->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_ADDRESSU, D3DTADDRESS_WRAP ); Direct3dDev->SetSamplerState(0, D3DSAMP_ADDRESSV, D3DTADDRESS_WRAP ); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_CULLMODE, D3DCULL_NONE); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_LIGHTING, false); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ZENABLE, D3DZB_TRUE); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ZWRITEENABLE,D3DZB_TRUE); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ZFUNC,D3DCMP_LESSEQUAL); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ALPHABLENDENABLE, true ); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ALPHAREF, 0x00000000ul); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ALPHATESTENABLE, true); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ALPHAFUNC,D3DCMP_GREATER); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_SRCBLEND, D3DBLEND_SRCALPHA ); Direct3dDev->SetRenderState(D3DRS_DESTBLEND, D3DBLEND_INVSRCALPHA ); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_COLORARG1, D3DTA_TEXTURE); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_COLORARG2, D3DTA_DIFFUSE); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_COLOROP, D3DTOP_MODULATE); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_ALPHAARG1, D3DTA_TEXTURE); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_ALPHAARG2, D3DTA_DIFFUSE); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_ALPHAOP, D3DTOP_MODULATE); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_RESULTARG, D3DTA_CURRENT); Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(0, D3DTSS_TEXCOORDINDEX, D3DTSS_TCI_PASSTHRU); //ensure the first stage is not used for now Direct3dDev->SetTextureStageState(1, D3DTSS_COLOROP, D3DTOP_DISABLE); How can I do this right?

  • How can I implement a matchmaker?

    - by csiz
I'm making a multiplayer game, where players are separated in to rooms that would ideally have about 20 players. So I need a few pointers on an algorithm to distribute the players in to these rooms. A few more constraints: When a players gets in to a room, he should stay there until he decides to exit (the room itself changes levels) There may be more room servers, every server should create more rooms until near full capacity There's a central server that manages all the room servers, and directs the players towards their room

  • Ubuntu Screenshot Window Class

    - by Weylin Schreck
I would like to know the class for the "thing" that pops up when you take a screen shot using the default screen capture utility in Ubuntu 12.04. When I do a full screen capture it lags a lot because of particular animation I use to open things like drop down menus. Therefore I’d like to disable that only. If someone could provide me with the window "class=" or however I would disable the animation there it would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I install Ubuntu on my Nexus 7 while being able to recover from an Nandroid backup?

    - by MagicFab
I use CyanogenMod and ClockWork Recovery on my Nexus 7. How can my existing full nandroid backup be used to restore my device after installing Ubuntu? The instructions assume "recovery" would mean re-flashing the vanilla image, at factory, data-wiped condition. It would be useful to provide a .zip that can be flashed via Clockwork (or other) recovery usin ROM Manager or booting into recovery and back to whatever Nandroid backup there is - much as any other ROM is provided/used.

Here we need to handle with JSON serialization techniques.

  • Backlinks for nonexisting page

    - by Michal
I've bought domain, which was previously used by somebody back in 2007. Now I've realized that internet is full of backlinks that point to non-existing parts (pages) under my website-domain (for example to mypage.com/whatever, where whatever is not present on my website, so 404 error shows). I want to ask, are these links counted by google (for pagerank) and other search engines, or not. So do I have to redirect these links to existing pages in order to be counted?

  • ADF Real World Developers Guide Book Review

    - by Grant Ronald
I'm half way through my review of "Oracle ADF Real World Developer's Guide" by Jobinesh Purushothaman - unfortunately some work deadlines de-railed me from having completed my review by now but here goes.  First thing, Jobinesh works in the Oracle Product Management team with me, so is a colleague. That declaration aside, its clear that this is someone who has done the "real world" side of ADF development and that comes out in the book. In this book he addresses both the newbies and the experience developers alike.  He introduces the ADF building blocks like entity objects and view obejcts, but also goes into some of the nitty gritty details as well.  There is a pro and con to this approach; having only just learned about an entity or view object, you might then be blown away by some of the lower details of coding or lifecycle.  In that respect, you might consider this a book which you could read 3 or 4 times; maybe skipping some elements in the first read but on the next read you have a better grounding to learn the more advanced topics. One of the key issues he addresses is breaking down what happens behind the scenes.  At first, this may not seem important since you trust the framework to do everything for you - but having an understanding of what goes on is essential as you move through development.  For example, page 58 he explains the full lifecycle of what happens when you execute a query.  I think this is a great feature of his book. You see this elsewhere, for example he explains the full lifecycle of what goes on when a page is accessed : which files are involved, the JSF lifecycle etc. He also sprinkes the book with some best practices and advice which go beyond the standard features of ADF and really hits the mark in terms of "real world" advice. So in summary, this is a great ADF book, well written and covering a mass of information.  If you are brand new to ADF its still valid given it does start with the basics.  But you might want to read the book 2 or 3 times, skipping the advanced stuff on the first read.  For those who have some basics already then its going to be an awesome way to cement your knowledge and take it to the next levels.  And for the ADF experts, you are still going to pick up some great ADF nuggets.  Advice: every ADF developer should have one!
