  • How to create a new background process in a KSH "while read" loop?

    - by yael
The following test script has a problem. When I add the line (sleep 5 ) & in the script then the "while read" loop does not read all lines from the file, but only prints the first line. But when I remove the ( sleep 5 ) & from the script, then the script prints all lines as defined in the file. Why the ( sleep 5 ) & causes this? And how to solve the problem? I want to create a new process (for which the sleep is just an example) in the while loop: $ more test #!/bin/ksh while read -r line ; do echo Read a line: echo $line ( sleep 5 )& RESULT=$! echo Started background sleep with process id $RESULT sleep 1 echo Slept for a second kill $RESULT echo Killed background sleep with process id $RESULT done < file echo Completed On my Linux, when using the following contents of file: $ more file 123 aaa 234 bbb 556 ccc ...running ./test just gives me: Read a line: 123 aaa Started background sleep with process id 4181 Slept for a second Killed background sleep with process id 4181 Completed

  • powershell run java process problem

    - by Limited Atonement
Dear Sirs, I'm trying to run a java process via Powershell in Windows XP. Here's the command: java.exe -cp .;./common.jar -Dcontext=atest1 -Dresourcepath=. DW_Install So, the classpath is . and .\common.jar (I think java takes the wrong slashes, right?) There are two environment variables, one "atest1" the other "." and the class to execute main on is DW_Install (in the default package). This command works in cmd.exe, but doesn't is PS. What's going on? What is PS doing while parsing this command that CMD doesn't do (or vice versa)? Aaron

  • Scanning php uploads in tmp directory with clamdscan fails

    - by Nikola
I can't seem to get this thing to work, some permission problem maybe, but i can't even run clamdscan normally form console with root the result is always Permission denied. for example i create a file test.txt (eicar file) in /tmp and execute "clandscan /tmp/test.txt" in console logged in as root and i get "/tmp/test.txt: Access denied. ERROR ". The clamd demon is running with user clamav could that be the reason? Now i want to scan the same file (/tmp/test.txt) via php , so i run (i have chowned the file to apache:apache ) $cmd="clamdscan /tmp/test.txt"; exec($cmd,$a,$b); i get error 127 i try with the full path of the command /usr/bin/clamdscan i get error 126 (command is found but is not executable), this means that apache doesn't have the permission to execute /usr/bin/clamdscan ? what could be the problem?

  • Scheduling VMWare ESXi 4.1 VM Restart

    - by Robin Day
We had a virtual machine running on a VMWare Server host on Windows Server 2003. The machine is set up with non persistent disks. We had a windows task schedule set up that ran a batch file to reset the machine each week so that it returned to it's original state. The batch file that we had running was: "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\vmware-cmd" "C:\Virtual Machines\VirtualMachineName\VirtualMachineName.vmx" stop hard "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\vmware-cmd" "C:\Virtual Machines\VirtualMachineName\VirtualMachineName1.vmx" start We have since migrated this machine to the free version of ESXi 4.1. Can anyone let me know if and how it is possible to schedule such a restart?

  • Fixing a typo in machine name

    - by justSteve
When i installed windows i had a typo in the machine name that i corrected from the system's 'Computer Name/Domain Changes' - the workstation is a member of a workgroup not a domain. From everything i can see the renamed machine name is correct. Shift gears.... I'm importing SQL logins from my remote server to this, my development workstation and have used the script presented here - a script that generates a CREATE statement for each login found. While I was preparing to run this script's output (from the remote box) i needed to change the domain name from the remote to my local's name - so i ran the same script locally (in order to see what SQL things my domain name is. SQL has the original machine name - the one with the typo. However, the scripts are tossing errors if i try to create logins with that identifier. CREATE LOGIN [Setve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] But works correctly if i use the updated machine name: CREATE LOGIN [Steve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] So the problem is: do i have a problem i need to solve? Somewhere, deep in the guts of SQL Server, it has record of a Domain name that does not exist. Should i find and fix that discrepancy? thx

  • Powershell if statement not working - help!

    - by Dmart
    I have a batch file that takes a computer name as its argument and will install Java JRE on it remotely. Now, Im trying to run this Powershell script to repeatedly call the batch file and install Java on any system that it finds without the latest version. It seems to run error-free, but the statements inside the if code block never seem to run - even when the if conditional test evaluates to true. Can anyone look at this script and point out what I'm possibly missing? I'm using the Quest AD cmdlets, and BSOnPosh module. Thank you. get-qadcomputer -sizelimit 0 -name mypc* -searchroot 'OU=MyComputers,DC=MyDomain,DC=lcl'| test-host -property name |ForEach-Object -process { $targnm = $_.name $tststr=reg query "\\$targnm\HKLM\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment" /v Java6FamilyVersion if(-not ($tststr | select-string -SimpleMatch '1.6.0_20')) { $mssg="Updating to JRE 6u20 on $targnm" Out-Host $mssg Out-File -filepath c:\install_jre_log.txt -inputobject $mssg -Append cmd /c \\server\apps\java\installjreremote.cmd $targnm } else { $mssg ="JRE 6u20 found on $targnm" Out-Host $mssg Out-File -filepath c:\install_jre_log.txt -inputobject $mssg -Append } }

  • Safari on Mac OS X lasts beyond Empty Cache

    - by Mitch
So, I broke a website with some server changes oops. I roll back the changes I made, hit cmd-R, and oh noes, it is still broken. But I relax thinking, there must be something held in safari's cache so I press the handy 'Empty Cache' button. Hit cmd-R for refresh it is still broken. I'm really worried that I've done it and broken something bigtime. But first decide to check on a hand win xp computer, and voila it works. So the question is how do you "really" clear the cache w/o restart safari, I have many browser windows open a restart every time I make a server side change will ruin me. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Ubuntu 10.04 User Interface errors

    - by user306668
Hi Guys Using Ubuntu 10.04 Beta on a Sony Vaio laptop (slightly old PCG-4n7M). It was working wonderfully until this morning. After updating and upgrading the login screen images gave broken image icons, then on logging in UI was replaced with just the cmd shell. All menus are gone. I have tried to reconfigure xserver-xorg and that doesn't work. Reinstalling doesn't either. I have tried a number of other attempts. What is weird is that I can launch graphical applications from the cmd line. such as firefox or google-chrome. and they work but the UI is simplified or broken (no resizing, closing, minimizing). I am a bit lost on how to fix this error. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know

  • GPO - Setting not applied, although policy is applied

    - by Kenny Bones
This is rather strange. In our domain we have several terminal servers and this morning a user reported that no drives are mapped when he logs on to the terminal server. So, I checked Group Policy Results and compare two users. Both users have the exact same policies applied. But for this particular user, the Script section under User Configuration - Policies - Windows Settings is just not there. For the other user, which this is working fine for, it says under the Script section that Winning GPO is Terminal2008, which is the GPO that contains the script section. And the Terminal2008 GPO is applied to both users. Also, the loopback processing is set to Replace. What could be the cause for this? I've never seen this particular issue before. I mean, both users are in the same OU, they log on to the same terminal server and the same policies are applied to both. They do not however have the exact same group memberships, but should that matter? It's not stated that the script should be run only if the user is a member of a certain group either. Not sure if that could be done through that specific setting either. All I know is, the very same policies are applied to both users, in the same OU and the same computer. Meaning, the same policies should be applied? Edit: I just ran Group Policy Results on one of the other terminal servers, which are also in the same OU, and the Scripts section is there! This means that this particular user don't get this setting when he's logged onto this particular server. What could be the cause of this?

  • windows 2008 R2 TS printer security - can't take owership

    - by Ian
I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Terminal server role installed. I'm seeing a problem with an ordinary user who is member of local printer operators group on the server. If the user opens a cmd window using ‘run as administrator’ they can run printmanager.msc without needing to enter their password again. In printmanager they can change the ownership of redirected (easy print) printers without problems. If, from the same cmd window, they use subinacl to try and change the onwership of the queue to themselves they get access denied: >subinacl.exe /printer "_#MyPrinter (2 redirected)" /setowner="MyDom\MyUsr" Elapsed Time: 00 00:00:00 Done: 1, Modified 0, Failed 1, Syntax errors 0 Last Done : _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) Last Failed: _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) - OpenPrinter Error : 5 Access denied so, same context, same action but one works and one doesn't. Any ideas for this odd behaviour? I'm using subinacl x86 on an x64 server as I can't find anything more up to date. I've tried with icacls and others but couldn't get them to do anything with printers.

  • how to master in Windows administration [closed]

    - by Mateusz
what is, in your opinion, best way to become real Windows, advanced administrator? Of course it's possible to obtain MS Certificates, but they're rather very expensive. Almost two years of everyday working on Linux machine, teach me, that it's very important to read system logs. Anyway, I assume that it's enough - I think that you must be familiar with almost any hive in you registry and each trick in Windows CMD and VBS- although it's high time for PowerShell, still on many maschines, you have only an opprotunity of using CMD by default (and their owners are reluctant to install anything else). How I can accomplish this task? Which groups follows (superUser - it' obligatory), which articles read?

  • How do you set up CRON?

    - by user1723760
I have never used CRON before but I want to use CRON in order to be able to perform schedule jobs for a php script. The php script is called "inactivesession.php" and in the php script is this code: <?php include('connect.php'); $createDate = mktime(0,0,0,10,25,date("Y")); $selectedDate = date('d-m-Y', ($createDate)); $sql = "UPDATE Session SET Active = ? WHERE DATE_FORMAT(SessionDate,'%Y-%m-%d' ) <= ?"; $update = $mysqli->prepare($sql); $update->bind_param("is", 0, $selectedDate); $update->execute(); ?> Wht I want to do is that when the above date is reached (25th Oct), I want the php script to perform the UPDATE statement above. But my question is that how do I use CRON in order to do this? The server I am using is the university's server known as helios, does CRON need to be set up in helios, (do I have to call the admin for this) or is it something else which uses CRON. I have never used CRON before so can you explain to me how CRON can be set up for the example above with the server I am using? Thanks UPDATE: Hi, I think the name of the OS is actually helios but I am not sure, I have a wikipedia page on this: here. I will read the crontab wikipedia page and see what I can find, but what my question is that is CRON already set up, do I just go right ahead and use CRON or do I need to set it up first?

  • How to make quicksilver remember custom trigger

    - by corroded
I am trying to make a custom trigger for my shell/apple script file to run so I can just launch my dev environment at the push of a button. So basically: I have a shell script(and some apple script included) in ~ named start_server.sh which does 3 things: start up solr server start up memcached start up script/server I have a saved quicksilver command(.qs) that opens up start_server.sh(so start_server.sh, then the action is "Run in Terminal") I created a custom trigger that calls this saved qs command. I did that then tested it and it works. I then tried to double check it so I quit quicksilver and when I checked the triggers it just said: "Open (null)" as the action. I set the trigger again and when i restarted QS the same thing happened again. I don't know why but my old custom trigger to open terminal has worked since forever so why doesn't this one work? Here's a screenie of the triggers after I restart QS: http://grab.by/4XWW If you have any other suggestion on how to make a "push button" start for my server then please do so :) Thanks! As an added note, I have already tried the steps on this thread but to no avail: http://groups.google.com/group/blacktree-quicksilver/browse_thread/thread/7b65ecf6625f8989

  • Why does MOVE command in DOS treat wildcard patterns oddly in this case?

    - by Adisak
I am using the "move" command with a wildcard pattern in the CMD prompt under Windows 7. In my source directory, I have the following files: movie1.avi movie1.avi_metadata movie2.avi movie2.avi_metadata If I type the command move source\*.avi dest it will move all four files even though I would expect it to only move the two *.avi files and not the *.avi_metadata files. As expected, move source\*.a dest and move source\*.av dest don't move any files. However when the length of the extension for the wildcard pattern is 3 characters, it will move all extensions that begin with those first three characters. Is this a bug in the "move" command or expected behavior and is it documented anywhere? Edit: John Watts notes that this is probably do to "short" filenames. Is it possible then to make commands in the CMD interpreter only operate on long filenames and to ignore short filenames?

  • VMware - Broadcom 1000Gbps NIC does not link at 100Mbps to a Cisco switch port

    - by Spirit
Today we've stumbled on a very awkward situation with our VMWare Server. The server is with ESX 3.5 that has a 1Gbps NIC. We bought a brand new managed Cisco Linksys switch with 10/100Mbps interface ports but when we plugged the cable in one of the ports the link simply does not wanted to activate :S... Does anyone with more VMware experience have ever had similar problem? From what I know is that 1Gbps NICs are backwards compatible with 100Mbps switches. This is what we've tryed so far but with no success: Tryed: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004089 Tryed to modify the /etc/modules.conf folowing the guide from this article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=813 After the changes I have restarted the networking services using # service network restart, # service mgmt-vmware restart and # service vmware-vpxa restart It seems that no matter how many times, or whatever approach/method (GUI or Shell) we try to change the speed and duplex of the network adapter and to force it to 100mbps it only accepts 1Gbps .. I am starting to go nuts :@

  • Determine from where is "sh" being run under apache www-data user using using PF or NETSTAT

    - by Eugene van der Merwe
    I am working with a compromised Ubuntu 8.04 Plesk 9.5.4 server. It seems that a script on the server is continuously doing reverse lookups to random IPs on the Internet. I first spotted it during by using top and then noticed flashes of this coming up continuously: sh -c host -W 1 '198.204.241.10' I wrote a this script to interrogate ps every 1 second to see how frequently this script happens: #!/bin/bash while : do ps -ef | egrep -i "sh -c host" sleep 1 done The results are that this script runs often, every few seconds: www-data 17762 8332 1 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '59.58.139.134' www-data 17772 8332 1 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '59.58.139.134' www-data 17879 17869 0 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '198.204.241.10' www-data 17879 17869 1 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '198.204.241.10' www-data 17879 17869 0 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '198.204.241.10' root 18031 17756 0 10:07 pts/2 00:00:00 egrep -i sh -c host www-data 18078 16704 0 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '59.58.139.134' www-data 18125 17996 0 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '91.124.51.65' root 18131 17756 0 10:07 pts/2 00:00:00 egrep -i sh -c host www-data 18137 17869 0 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '198.204.241.10' www-data 18137 17869 1 10:07 ? 00:00:00 sh -c host -W 1 '198.204.241.10' My theory is if I can see who is launching the sh process or form where it's launched I can isolate the problem further. Can somebody please guide me using netstat or ps to identify from where sh is being run? I might get many suggestions that the OS is out of date and so the Plesk, but please bear in mind there are some very concrete reasons why this server is running legacy software. My question is aimed at a advanced Linux systems administrators who have in depth experience with security compromises and using netstat and ps to get to the bottom of it.

  • How do I run multiple commands on one line in Powershell?

In cmd prompt, you can run two commands on one line like so: ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew When I run this command in PowerShell, I get: Ampersand not allowed. The & operator is reserved for future use Does PowerShell have an operator that allows me to quickly produce the equivalent of & in cmd prompt? Any method of running two commands in one line will do. I know that I can make a script, but I'm looking for something a little more off the cuff.

  • printer assignments for windows xp workstations within an active directory environment

    - by another_netadmin
I'm using the following script to handle removing any old networked printers from machines and then assigning the propper ones and making one of them the default. This script is assigned to the OU the workstations reside in and uses group policy loopback so all users that login will get the appropriate printers mapped for them. I tried to use the new Printer Manager as part of W2K3 R2 but when assigning the default this way I get an error that the printer doesn't exist so I'm back to using the script. One flaw that I'm noticing is that it won't remove any printers that happen to be mapped from an RDP session (we don't see this everywhere but there are a few locations). Is there any way to enumerate all RDP printers and remove them similar to how I'm enumerating and removing networked printers? ' ' Printers.vbs - Windows Logon Script. • Mounting fuse sshfs fails when invoked by Cron on FreeBSD 9.0

    - by Tal
I have a remote server filesystem that I'm attempting to mount locally on a FreeBSD 9 machine via FUSE sshfs, and Cron for a backup routine. I have ssh keys between the boxes setup to allow for passwordless login as the root user on the local machine. Cron is set to run the following script (in Root's crontab): #!/bin/sh echo "Mounting Share" /usr/local/bin/sshfs -C -o reconnect -o idmap=user -o workaround=all <remote user>@<remote domain>.com: /mnt/remote_server As root, I can run this script on the command line without issue, and without being asked for a password the share mounts successfully. Yet, when run by Cron the script fails. The path to sshfs is identical to the value of which sshfs Here is the email root receives from the Cron Daemon: X-Cron-Env: <SHELL=/bin/sh> X-Cron-Env: <HOME=/root> X-Cron-Env: <PATH=/usr/bin:/bin> X-Cron-Env: <LOGNAME=root> X-Cron-Env: <USER=root> Mounting Share fuse: failed to exec mount program: No such file or directory fuse: failed to mount file system: No such file or directory I'm stumped as to why I'm receiving No such file or directory in this instance. It further seems odd given that the paths appear to be correct. I've also attempted to compare the output of env on the shell with env inserted into the script. I don't see any environment variables that should cause this trouble. At bootup, FUSE reports its version as: fuse4bsd: version 0.3.9-pre1, FUSE ABI 7.8 Help me ServerFault wizards, you're my only hope!

  • How to add a writable folder to the PHP document root on linux

    - by Ron Whites
We are building an example bash script for our PHP TestCoverage Tool use on Linux. The development environment is Ubuntu 12.04_1 but we intend to have the linux example work across as many linux versions as possible without modification. The example linux script requires a variable be set to the PHP Document Root path and by default uses a small PHP example source to show the user how our GUI and text report shows the covered and uncovered PHP code areas. The linux script is also intended to be easily alterable by the user to automate the TestCoverage display of users PHP code. The problem we are having with Ubuntu 12.04 (any linux?) is that the PHP Apache2 document root is defined in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default as /var/www and /var/www is defaulted with "drwxr-xr-x" read only access. So in order to add our own folder as /var/www/SDTestCoverage we must change /var/www to "drwxrwxrwx" read-write access. So it seems our script (at least on Ubuntu) will need to ... 1. acquire and save the /var/www permissions then do .. 2. sudo chmod 777 /var/www (to make writable) 3. mkdir -p /var/www/SDTestCoverage (create our folder under the document root) 4. sudo chmod 777 /var/www/SDTestCoverage (make our subfolder writable) 5. and finally restore /var/www permissions Thanks and our Questions are .. 1. Is this the standard way (using Ubuntu) one adds a writable folder under the PHP Document Root? 2. Is this the most general purpose way one adds a writable folder under the PHP Document Root on other versions of Linux?

  • New to server admin, Diagnosing Memory and CPU issues on DV

    - by G Thompson
Sorry for my ignorance and lack of knowledge. I'm a PHP/Front-end developer just now venturing into very minor server management/diagnostics. I have a Media Temple DV account. I have 2 sites that run a PHP script through a subscription service to an API. Basically API hits site with said script. Script runs, gathers data from api, saves data to SQL database. I noticed that these sites seemed to causing memory overages on my server (not sure why). So I temporarily disabled them. The memory overage alerts stopped but my CPU still sits really high, like at 115% and above. I'm trying to diagnos this with tutorials and resources but just can't seem to find a solution. I'll attach screenshots(screenshots are without the PHP scripts I assume are responsible for the memory issues) I'm assuming are important to the diagnosis, but if anyone can point me in the right direction to start A. figuring out if and why the PHP script may be causing memory overages and B. Why my CPU is always over 100%. Thanks guys! Links to screen shots... can't post with low points. http://i.stack.imgur.com/A64k4.png http://i.stack.imgur.com/qm1rV.png

    - by cwd
There is a pretty awesome applescript called "Open Terminal Here" ( http://www.entropy.ch/software/applescript/ ) which you can add to your finder's toolbar and click when you want to launch a terminal console which is set to that directory. Sometimes I need to be root, and so I end up starting terminal, doing something like sudo -i and then I have to change back to the previous directory because the sudo command is landing me in /var/root. I'm using sudo -i because I like it to load things like aliases / the bash profile. The script is applescript, and here's the important part of how it works: ... set cmd to "cd " & quoted form of the_path & " && echo $'\\ec'" ... tell application "Terminal" activate do script with command cmd How do I get this to load as root?
