    Given the following module, module Foo def bar :baz end end def send_to_foo(method) # ...? end send_to_foo(:bar) # => :baz What code should go in send_to_foo to make the last line work as expected? (send_to_foo is obviously not how I would implement this; it just makes clearer what I'm looking for.) I expected Foo.send(:bar) to work at first, but it makes sense that it doesn't. It would if the method were defined as def self.bar, but that's no fun.

  • What is best strategy to handle exceptions & errors in Rails?

    Hello. I was wondering if people would share their best practices / strategies on handling exceptions & errors. Now I'm not asking when to throw an exception ( it has been throroughly answered here: SO: When to throw and Exception) . And I'm not using this for my application flow - but there are legitimate exceptions that happen all the time. For example the most popular one would be ActiveRecordNotFound. What would be the best way to handle it? The DRY way? Right now I'm doing a lot of checking within my controller so if Post.find(5) returns Nil - I check for that and throw a flash message. However while this is very granular - it's a bit cumbersome in a sense that I need to check for exceptions like that in every controller, while most of them are essentially the same and have to do with record not found or related records not found - such as either Post.find(5) not found or if you are trying to display comments related to post that doesn't exist, that would throw an exception (something like Post.find(5).comments[0].created_at) I know you can do something like this in ApplicationController and overwrite it later in a particular controller/method to get more granular support, however would that be a proper way to do it? class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base rescue_from ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid do |exception| render :action => (exception.record.new_record? ? :new : :edit) end end

While inspecting the link, it displays the following: onclick="jQuery('#bulk_action').val('bulk_add_to_categories'); jQuery('#bulk_form').submit(); return false;" But when I click on it I get this error. I need to do something like this I need to have an separate UI for all the products that have came from that bulk action, and then put them into the selected categories, but I am not able to do that. Can anyone help me on this? Any help would be great. I have seen lot of tutorial and read the rails admin github page but I was not able to find anything helpful. Please guide me.

    Good day, I have been using Rails/Mysql for the past while but I have been hearing about Cassandra, MongoDB, CouchDB and other document-store DB/Non-relational databases. I'm planning to explore them later as they might be better alternative for scalability. I'm planning to start an application soon. Will it make a different with Rails design if I move from relational to non-relational database? I know Rails migrations are database-agnostic but wasn't sure if moving to non-relational will make difference with design or not.

    i am trying to simulate a session using factory girl/shoulda (it worked with fixtures but i am having problems with using factories). i have following factories (user login and email both have 'unique' validations): Factory.define :user do |u| u.login 'quentin' u.email '[email protected]' end Factory.define :session_user, :class => Session do |u| u.association :user, :factory => :user u.session_id 'session_user' end and here's the test class MessagesControllerTest < ActionController::TestCase context "normal user" do setup do @request.session[:user_id]=Factory(:user).id @request.session[:session_id]=Factory(:session_user).session_id end should "be able to access new message creation" do get :new assert_response :success end end end but when i run "rake test:functionals", i get this test result 1) Error: test: normal user should be able to access new message creation. (MessagesControllerTest): ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid: Validation failed: Account name already exists!, Email already exists! which means that record already exists in db when i am referring to it in test setup. is there something i don't understand here? does factory girl create all factories in db on startup? rails 2.3.5/shoulda/factory girl

I have a web layout of a for that looks something like this <html> <head> </head> <body> <div id="posts"> <div id="post1" class="post" > <!--stuff 1--> </div> <div id="post2" class="post" > <!--stuff 1--> </div> <!-- 96 more posts --> <div id="post99" class="post" > <!--stuff 1--> </div> </div> </body> </html> I would like to be able to load and render the page with a blank , and then have a function called when the page is loaded which goes in and load up the posts and updates the page dynamically. In Rails, I tried using "link_to_remote" to update with all of the elements. I also tweaked the posts controller to render the collection of posts if it was an ajax request (request.xhr?). It worked fine and very fast. However the update of the blank div is triggered by clicking the link. I would like the same action to happen when the page is loaded so that I don't have to put in a link. Is there a Rails Ajax helper or RJS function or something in Rails that I could use to trigger the loading of the "posts" after the page has loaded and rendered (without the posts)? (If putsch comes to shove, I will just copy the generated JS code from the link_to_remote call and have it called from the onload handler on the body).

  • fastercsv parsing to int or other into ActiveRecord

    I'm currently importing a CSV into an activerecord element but can't choose to parse the elements as say ints or decimals on a case by case basis using fastercsv. I can either choose to parse everything as an int or the other, or all as strings. I need to parse some columns as ints, some as decimals and some as strings. Otherwise, is there a way after I've parsed everything as strings to convert and update individual elements in the activerecord to the new form? Say parse values in as strings then convert certain values to ints, others to decs, etc?

I did that and lots of errors came out like in console just typing Post.all would show "undefined method `retrieve_connection' for nil:NilClass". Any ideas?   • LinkedIn API returning extra/incorrect login prompt

    I have a Rails application running the omniauth-linkedin gem and linkedin gem (essentialy an API wrapper). When a user logs in, they receive a primary login prompt that displays to them the correct scopes (FULL PROFILE and EMAIL ADDRESS), as below: However, after they log in, they get another login prompt that should not come up, and that ignores the initial scope request. It tells them that LinkedIN is only requesting their PROFILE OVERVIEW, which is incorrect: The problem must lie in my auth_controller, and I think it has do to with the url that is created in one of the authentication stages (definitely right after the user enters their LinkedIn authentication credentials).     I'm trying to write some tests (RSpec) against the AppEngine and its datastore. I've tried to load the environment and tests via: appcfg.rb run -S spec app/tests/ And I end up with the following error: spec:19: undefined method `bin_path' for Gem:Module (NoMethodError) I can run non-appengine specs just fine by running: spec app/tests/ Any suggestions on how to get RSpec up and running with JRuby and Google App Engine would be greatly appreciated.     I need to grab the records for same day of the week for the preceeding X days of the week. There must be a better way to do it than this: Transaction.find_by_sql "select * from transactions where EXTRACT(DOW from date) = 1 and organisation_id = 4 order by date desc limit 7" It gets me what I need but is Postgres specific and not very "Rails-y". Date is a timestamp. Anyone got suggestions?

  • Rails form submission

    Hi Everyone, I have a simple form to enter details of a new case (kase), it's working well and clicking submit stores the information and takes the user to the show.html.erb page. However, I wanted to move part of the form to the sidebar - to make things a little easier to see and use for the user, however, when I moved the section to the sidebar - anything entered during either a creation or edit within those sidebar fields is ignored.     I have a YML file containing fixtures for a Rails model (Comment) which looks like this (pardon the formatting): comment_a: id: 1 text: 'foo' visible: false comment_b: id: 2 text: 'bar' visible: true comment_c: id: 3 text: 'baz' visible: true I know that I can select an individual Comment fixture like so: comments(:comment_a) In one of my acceptance tests, I want to find all the Comments which have visible = true. How do I select a set of Comments that meet certain criteria so I can iterate over them afterwards?

    I'm attempting to display multiple records, with each record displaying its own selection box. I would like to submit this form and pass a hash, having the Add.id function as the key of the hash, and the selection box option pass as the information in the hash.
