• Using Selenium IDE with random values

- by Toby Hede
Is it possible to create Selenium tests using the Firefox plugin that use randomly generated values to help do regression tests? The full story: I would like to help my clients do acceptance testing by providing them with a suite of tests that use some smarts to create random (or at least pseudo-random) values for the database. One of the issues with my Selenium IDE tests at the moment is that they have predefined values - which makes some types of testing problematic.

• SlidingDrawer handle design issue

- by bali182
I would like to create a SlidingDrawer, which has a handle like this: Until now i tought my solution was ok, which was: 1.) I created a 9 patch: As you can see, the center part is not strechable, only the two sides (and the height, if needed). On most of the phones i got the desired result, shown above. 2.) Put it in this layout (just pseudo-code): <SlidingDrawer (fullscreen)> <Button as handle (full width, backround the 9patch)/> <LinearLayout as content /> </SlidingDrawer> However, i tested the app on my friend's new Galaxy S3, and the result was something like this: The part, which should be centered, was completely off one side. And i have no idea, why and it bugs me since then. My Question: Is this the prefered way (9 patch with full width) to acomplish the look i want? If not, could someone suggest me a better solution?

• How do I send an email from my webpage?

- by Jordan S
I am not a web developer but I do have a lot of programming experience in C# and Windows forms programming. On our company webpage my boss wants me to put in a textbox where visitors can submit a comment and press a submit button and that comment will be sent to an email address. Right now, our website uses just plain old html, no php or javascript or anything like that. I am wondering what is the simplest way to accomplish what I need? Can someone point me in the right direction? The website is hosted on an Apache server so I won't be able to use aspx.

• Facebook-like invitation page for my categorization service

- by ming yeow
Hi folks, i am working on a categorization service. I want the experience to behave similarly to Facebook's invite/tagging function Does anyone have any experience implementing this? This includes: autocompleting based on list below if auto-complete does not turn up anything, give chance to do something else with that data Would be super happy to hear any experiences, plugins that might be useful in helping me build this out

• Segmentation fault on certain inputs and not others

- by Brandon Schwandt
Heres a function I wrote that has some debugging elements in it already. When i enter either a "y" or a "Y" as the input I get a segmentation fault during runtime. When I enter any other value the code runs. The seg fault kicks out after it scans and gives me the response but before the "scan worked" line is output. DOn't know why it would act like this only on these values. If anyone needs the function call I have that as well. query_user(char *response [10]) { printf("response after query call before clear=%s\n",response); strcpy(response,""); printf("response after clearing before scan=%s\n",response); printf("Enter another person into the line? y or n\n"); scanf("%s", response); printf("response after scan=%s\n",response); printf("scan worked"); } main() { char response [10]; strcpy(response,"y"); printf("response=%s\n",response); printf("When finished with program type \"done\" to exit\n"); while (strcmp(response,"done") != 0) { printf("response after while loop and before query call=%s\n",response); query_user(&response); } } output on error: response after query call before clear=y response after clearing before scan= Enter another person into the line? y or n y response after scan=y Segmentation Fault (core dumped) output on non-error: response after query call before clear=y response after clearing before scan= Enter another person into the line? y or n n response after scan=n scan worked Cycle number 0 (program continues to run outside this function)

• My image does not load on a jQuery fade in effect even though the div loads.

- by Konstantin
jQuery(document).ready(function() { if (useMSIE){ pngfixALL(); }; jQuery(div).show(data_fadeInEffect, 500);return false; // jQuery(div).animate({opacity:1}, 500, 'linear'); }); This is what I have for a fade in effect. When using animate(), the image in the div tag fades in fine. However, when I use show(), the div loads because I can click in that area, but the image itself doesn't load. Why is this happening? I have another area of the code where I click on an 'x' in the image and it fades out using hide(). This works fine.

• Moving Function With Arguments To RequireJS

- by Jazimov
I'm not only relatively new to JavaScript but also to RequireJS (coming from string C# background). Currently on my web page I have a number of JavaScript functions. Each one takes two arguments. Imagine that they look like this: functionA(x1, y1) { ... } functionB(x2, y2) { ... } functionC(x3, y3) { ... } Currently, these functions exist in a tag on my HTML page and I simply call each as needed. My functions have dependencies on KnockoutJS, jQuery, and some other JS libraries. I currently have Script tags that synchronously load those external .js dependencies. But I want to use RequireJS so that they're loaded asynchronously, as needed. To do this, I plan to move all three functions above into an external .js file (a type of AMD "module") called MyFunctions.js. That file will have a define() call (to RequireJS's define function) that will look something like this: define(["knockout", "jquery", ...], function("ko","jquery", ...) {???} ); My question is how to "wrap" my functionA, functionB, and functionC functions where the ??? is above so that I can use those functions on my page as needed. For example, in the onclick event handler for a button on my HTML page, I would want to call functionA and pass two it two arguments; same for functionB and functionC. I don't fully understand how to expose those functions when they're wrapped in a define that itself is located in an external .js file. I know that define assures that my listed libraries are loaded asynchronously before the callback function is called, but after that's done I don't understand how the web page's script tags would use my functions. Would I need to use require to ensure they're available, such as: require(["myfunctions"],function({not sure what to put here})] I think I understand the basics of RequireJS but I don't understand how to wrap my functions so that they're in external .js files, don't pollute the global namespace, and yet can still be called from the main page so that arguments can be passed to them. I imagine they're are many ways to do this but in reviewing the RequireJS docs and some videos out there, I can't say I understand how... Thank you for any help.

• UI Design Tips and Tutorials for Android

- by Omega
Does anyone have any good pointers on designing the UI for an android application and some good practises? Obviously I'm aware of the basic principles involved with designing the layout in XML. Also, that you have a stack of activities. But I'm interested in some approaches to creating the interfaces and also how to design an application around those intentions.

• Reasons to store users' data in LDAP instead of RDBMS

- by Ancymon
It is often said that using LDAP is a good way to store data about users. That's beacause users' "directory" is hierarchical and it changes rarely. But in my opinion that doesn't exclude using RDBMS. What might be reasons to use LDAP? I guess that storing multi-valued fields or adding custom fields in LDAP might be easier but it can be done in database too (unless you have many records)

• How do you calculate the offset to the client area in WPF?

- by chris
I want to position a modal dialog (progress window) at the top right corner of the parent window client area. This code will put it in the corner of the non-client area, but how do I calculate the offset to the client area? this.Owner=owner; this.Left=owner.Left+owner.ActualWidth-Width; this.Top=owner.Top; Edit: I found this 'solution' that works for normal windows: this.Left=owner.Left+owner.ActualWidth-Width-SystemParameters.ResizeFrameVerticalBorderWidth; this.Top=owner.Top+SystemParameters.ResizeFrameHorizontalBorderHeight+SystemParameters.WindowCaptionHeight; This would however fail for windows that have customized borders. EDIT: The code should work regardless of the systems DPI setting (e.g. 120 instead of 96).

• Android: how to make two TextViews placed in different lines if there is no enough space in one line

- by bluebyte
I'am trying to organize two TextViews to behave like that: So, if there is enough space for both TextViews in line, android should place them in line. If there is no enough space, the second TextView must be placed on a next line with right alignment. <LinearLayout android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal" > <TextView android:id="@+id/takeoffCity" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" style="@style/flightItem" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/landingCity" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" style="@style/flightItem" /> </LinearLayout>

• Recommendation for tool/framework that follows the naked objects pattern?

- by Marcus Munzert
I am searching for a tool/framework that follows the naked objects pattern and is written in Java. I know about tools like for instance JMatter, Naked Objects and Domain Object Explorer. That's not exactly what I am searching for, though. Open source would be great, but doesn't need to be. My intention is to use that tool/framework for the purpose of model-driven software development to do the modeling part. Ideally, such a tool/framework would provide the option to use JPA to store/load objects.

• How do I find out what android system icons mean?

- by The Trav
Ok, so I've got an andoid phone with a bunch of icons up the top, looks like app notifications go on the left, system icons go on the right. Most of the system icons seem reasonably intuitive, service, 3g, wireless etc. I've recently gotten a new one that looks like a phone being tilted / shaken and have absolutely no idea what it means. Is there a reference site where I can look this thing up?

• Looking for MSSQL Table Design Sanity Check for Profile Tables with Dynamic Columns.

- by Code Sherpa
I just want a general sanity check regarding database design. We are building a web system that has both Teachers and Students. Both have accounts in the system. Both have profiles in the system. My question is about the table design of those Profile tables. The Teacher profile is pretty static regarding the metadata associated with it. Each teacher has a set number of fields that exposes information about that individual (schools, degrees, etc). The students, however, are a different case. We are using a windows service to pull varying data about the students from an endless stream of excel spreadsheets. The data gets moved into our database and then the fields appear in association with the student's profile. Accordingly, each and every student may have very different fields in their profile. I originally started with the concept of three tables: Accounts ---------- AccountID TeacherProfiles ---------- TeacherProfileID AccountID SecondarySchool University YearsTeaching Etc... StudentProfiles ---------- StudentProfileID AccountID Header Value The StudentProfiles table would hold the name of the column headers from the excel spreadsheets and the associated values. I have since evolved the design a little to treat Profiles more generically per the attached ERD image. The Teacher and Student "Headers" are stored in a table called "ProfileAttributeTypes" and responses (either from the excel document or via input fields on the web form) are put in a ProfileAttributes table. This way both Student and Teacher profiles can be associated with a dynamic flow of profile fields. The "Permissions" table tells us whether we are dealing with a Student or a Teacher. Since this system is likely to grow quickly, I want to make sure the foundation is solid. Can you please provide feedback about this design and let me know if it seems sound or if you could see problems it might create and, if so, what might be a better approach? Thanks in advance.

• Focus stealing is evil.

- by lunixbochs
A quick Google search for solutions to Focus Stealing in Windows reveals two main result categories: People suggesting incomplete solutions involving the ForegroundLockTimeout registry entry (or TweakUI, which I believe simply changes the aforementioned registry entry), which isn't very effective. Incessant hordes of Windows users complaining about it. It's particularly annoying in two common scenarios: Something triggers a program to popup a dialog window in the background while a fullscreen app is focused, causing the fullscreen app to minimize. A window steals focus while you are typing, stealing all of your keystrokes. If you happen to press Space, Enter, or trigger a keyboard shortcut (like Y for Yes), it can cause completely undesirable outcomes. What creative solutions can be applied to fix this problem for either or both of these scenarios?

• Automatically converting an A* into a B*

- by Xavier Nodet
Hi, Suppose I'm given a class A. I would like to wrap pointers to it into a small class B, some kind of smart pointer, with the constraint that a B* is automatically converted to an A* so that I don't need to rewrite the code that already uses A*. I would therefore want to modify B so that the following compiles... struct A { void foo() {} }; template <class K> struct B { B(K* k) : _k(k) {} //operator K*() {return _k;} //K* operator->() {return _k;} private: K* _k; }; void doSomething(A*) {} void test() { A a; A* pointer_to_a (&a); B b (pointer_to_a); //b->foo(); // I don't need those two... //doSomething(b); B* pointer_to_b (&b); pointer_to_b->foo(); // 'foo' : is not a member of 'B<K>' doSomething(pointer_to_b); // 'doSomething' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'B<K> *' to 'A *' } Note that B inheriting from A is not an option (instances of A are created in factories out of my control)... Is it possible? Thanks.

• jquery ui dialog open multiple dialog boxes using the same class on the button and the content div

- by MichaelAntoni
Hello there, i want to open multiple dialog boxes by using the same class on both the button and the content div. The below works but only for the first time. jQuery('.helpDialog').hide(); jQuery('.helpButton').click(function() { jQuery(this).next('.helpDialog').dialog({ autoOpen: true, title: 'Help', width: 500, height: 300, position: [180,10], draggable: true, resizable: false, modal: false }); return false; }); we know the reason for this http://blog.nemikor.com/2009/04/08/basic-usage-of-the-jquery-ui-dialog/ "the second call is ignored because the dialog has already been instantiated on that element." But when i fix that problem by trying the code below, the dialog box no longer opens. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance jQuery('.helpDialog').hide(); jQuery(function() { jQuery('.helpDialog').dialog({ autoOpen: false, modal: true, title: 'Info', width: 600, height: 400, position: [200,0], draggable: false }); }); jQuery('.helpButton').click(function() { jQuery(this).next('.helpDialog').dialog('open'); return false; });
