• DNS: forward part of a managed domain to one host, but sub domain services to another (Google Apps)

  I was going to post this as a comment against DNS: Forward domain to another host, but I don't seem able to do that. I'm in a similar situation. I have a DNS registered/managed by enom, except with the slight twist that the domain was originally registered with enom through a Google Apps account creation. The domain currently supports a Google Apps site/account. I now want to direct the bare primary domain and www entries to a hosting provider for the website component, but leave the Google Apps setup intact for its services such as calendar, mail etc. For now, I'm leaving the domain managed by enom. Also note that when I registered my account with the hosting provider, I gave the same domain name as the existing domain (e.g. example.com), so at their end I'm working with the same domain name in cpanel, etc. In my case, the existing enom DNS entries don't have an A record for the www.example.com, or the bare example.com domain. Instead, there are 4 x @ records with the Google Apps IP Address, 2 x TXT records with what I assume are Google Apps site verification strings/tokens, and a bunch of CNAME records for the various features of Google Apps (mail, calendar, docs, sites, etc). So, my questions: How do I point the www.example.com and example.com DNS entries at enom to my web site hosting provider, while leaving the domain managed by enom, and the Google Apps services working as they are now (with the obvious exception of Google Sites)? How do I setup the example.com mail-related DNS records (MX, etc) at the web site hosting provider, so that outbound email to [email protected] gets correctly sent to the google apps mail account, and doesn't get trapped inside the pseudo domain within the hosting providers servers?

• How does the PPA fit into the scenario of publishing an application to the Ubuntu Software Center?

  I've been going through docs for the past couple of hours but I haven't understood what the PPA is? I have a cross-platform Java application that I'd like to publish to the Ubuntu Software Center. My application is open-source and I'm using Github. Apparently, publishing applications to the store isn't as simple as uploading a deb package - am I right? I need to create an account on Launchpad and put all my code there. I don't intend to move from Git to Bzr merely for the sake of publishing to the app store but luckily, one is able to set up source-code mirroring from Github to Launchpad. Since my application is still very premature, it'll have updates fairly often. When I build my application on my machine, do I simply go my Ubuntu App Developer page and upload the new DEB package or do they build my application from source? What exactly is the PPA for? I don't think I'll need too many of the Launchpad features so I'd like to stick to Github if possible. (Publishing for Ubuntu really isn't trivial. I can see why there are so many developers out there who haven't published their applications to the Ubuntu Software Center. Publishing an Android applications has been the easiest so far.)

  It was time to create a new site. I figured VS 2010 is out so I should write it using MVC and Entity Framework. I have been very happy with MVC. My boss has had me making an administration web site in MVC2 but using 2008. I think one of the greatest features of MVC is you get to work with root of the app. It is kind of like being an iron worker; you get to work with the metal, mold it from scratch. Getting my articles out of my database and onto web pages was by far easier with MVC than it was with regular ASP.NET. This code is what I use to post the article to that page. It's pretty straightforward. The link in the menu is passes the id which is simply the url to the page. Here is one features of asp.net 4.0 that I am going to explain. As a web developer we all know about session. Without the use of session any database driven web application is incomplete. As we all know unlike windows form web forms are state less so when user interacts with web application we need to maintain state amongst web pages and we are using session for maintaining state between web pages for each users. ASP.NET is also provide same kind of session state functionalities. ASP.Net Session state identify request coming for same user and same browser for specific session time out interval and its preserves values in session for that specific time intervals and that’s help us in maintaining state amongst web pages for a specific user. ASP.NET Session state allows us to store session in three way 1. IncProc 2. Session State Service 3. SQL Server. In SQL Server mode it will store session in SQL Server tables instead of storing it in Server Memory. ASP.NET 4.0 provides a new property called Compression Enabled that means when we store values in serialized form in SQL Server with GZip Compression and that results in better performance.   Alberto Ferrari wrote an interesting article about DIVIDE performance in DAX. This new function has been introduced in SQL Server Analysis Services 2012 SP1, so it is available also in Excel 2013 (which still doesn’t have other features/fixes introduced by following Cumulative Updates…). The idea that instead of writing: IF ( Sales[Quantity] <> 0, Sales[Amount] / Sales[Quantity], BLANK () ) you can write: DIVIDE ( Sales[Amount], Sales[Quantity] ) There is a third optional argument in DIVIDE that defines the result in case the denominator (second argument) is zero, and by default its value is BLANK, so I omitted the third argument in my example. Using DIVIDE is very important, especially when you use a measure in MDX (for example in an Excel PivotTable) because it raise the chance that the non empty evaluation for the result is evaluated in bulk mode instead of cell-by-cell. However, from a DAX point of view, you might find it’s better to use the standard division operator removing the IF statement. I suggest you to read Alberto’s article, because you will find that an expression applying a filter using FILTER is faster than using CALCULATE, which is against any rule of thumb you might have read until now! Again, this is not always true, and depends on many conditions – trying to simplify, we might say that for a simple calculation, the query plan generated by FILTER could be more efficient – but, as usual, it depends, and 90% of the times using FILTER instead of CALCULATE produces slower performance. Do not take anything for granted, and always check the query plan when performance are your first issue!

If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it. • MySQL - Installation

  In order to create a development environment for a project I am working on, I recently needed to install MySQL Server.  The first step was to download the msi. Running this presents you with the installer splash screen, detailing the version of MySQL that you are about to install - in this case MySQL Server 5.1. Next you can choose whether to install a Typical, Complete or Custom installation.  Although this is the first time I have installed MySQL and the Custom option states "Recommended for advanced users" I opted to carry out a Custom installation, specifically so that I could be sure of what features and components were installed. On the Custom Setup screen you can choose which components to install.  By default the Developer Components are not included, but I opted to include some of these elements. Next up is the ready to install screen and then the intsallation progress.   Following the completion of the installation you are shown a few screens with details of the MySQL Enterprise subscription option. Finally the installation is complete and you are offered the chance to configure and register MySQL. Next I will be looking at the configuration of MySQL Server 5.1.

  After more time than I care to admit I have finally released a rudimentary Http Handler for serving compiled CoffeeScript from Asp.Net applications. It was a long and painful road but I am glad to finally have a usable strategy for client-side scripting in CoffeeScript. Why CoffeeScript? As Douglas Crockford discussed in detail, Javascript is a mixture of good and bad features. The genius of CoffeeScript is to treat javascript in the browser as a virtual machine. By compiling to javascript CoffeeScript gets a clean slate to re-implement syntax, taking the best of javascript and ruby and combining them into a beautiful scripting language. The only limitation is that CoffeeScript cannot do anything that javascript cannot do. Here is an example from the CoffeeScript website. First, the coffeescript syntax: reverse: (string) -> string.split('').reverse().join '' alert reverse '.eeffoC yrT' and the javascript that it compiles to: var reverse; reverse = function(string) { return string.split('').reverse().join(''); }; alert(reverse('.eeffoC yrT')); Areas For Improvement ;) The current implementation is deeply flawed, however, at this point I’m just glad it works. When the server receives a request for a coffeescript file the following things happen: The CoffeeScriptHandler is invoked If the script has previously been compiled then the compiled version is returned. Else it writes a script file containing the CoffeeScript compiler and the requested coffee script The process shells out to CScript.exe to to execute the script. The resulting javascript is sent back to the browser. This outlandish process is necessary because I could not find a way to directly execute the coffeescript compiler from .NET. If anyone can help out with that I would appreciate it.

• TweetMeme Button or Template Plug-In for WLW

  In my search for a way to allow readers to tweet post that I put on GWB I have come across the TweetMeme plug-in for Windows Live Writer.  It automatically puts a twitter button at either the top or bottom of your post depending on how you configure it.  It comes with a warning that it does not work with blog servers that strip out script from posts which I made me afraid it was going to make it incompatible with GWB.  This turned out to be the case so I figured we would need either an upgrade to the GWB platform or writing my own WLW plug-in.  In comes the Template plug-in.  This allows you to have standardized content that you can insert with a couple of clicks via the interface below. This solved the problem (sort of).  It required that I remove the standard javascript that is defined by Twitter’s button page.  In the end I am hoping for an update to our Subtext implementation to incorporate features like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and G+, but this should help us until that comes along. • Sesame Data Browser: filtering, sorting, selecting and linking

  I have deferred the post about how Sesame is built in favor of publishing a new update.This new release offers major features such as the ability to quickly filter and sort data, select columns, and create hyperlinks to OData. Filtering, sorting, selecting In order to filter data, you just have to use the filter row, which becomes available when you click on the funnel button: You can then type some text and select an operator: The data grid will be refreshed immediately after you apply a filter. It works in the same way for sorting. Clicking on a column will immediately update the query and refresh the grid.Note that multi-column sorting is possible by using SHIFT-click: Viewing data is not enough. You can also view and copy the query string that returns that data: One more thing you can to shape data is to select which columns are displayed. Simply use the Column Chooser and you'll be done: Again, this will update the data and query string in real time: Linking to Sesame, linking to OData The other main feature of this release is the ability to create hyperlinks to Sesame. That's right, you can ask Sesame to give you a link you can display on a webpage, send in an email, or type in a chat session. You can get a link to a connection: or to a query: You'll note that you can also decide to embed Sesame in a webpage... • Oracle OpenWorld 2013: First glimpses of the new SOA Suite 12c by Lucas Jellema

  During this week’s Oracle OpenWorld Conference, we were given some sneak peeks into the short term future of the Oracle SOA Suite. During various roadmap sessions, on the demo grounds as well as in the keynote session by Thomas Kurian (the replay of which you can see here, new features were described and demonstrated, allowing us to get a fairly good overview of what is going to come for SOA Suite - later in 2013 and sometime in 2014 (probably the first half of that year). The SOA Suite plays an important part in the three themes Thomas Kurian set down for the Fusion Middleware suite of products: support for mobility, cloud and business user empowerment. Some of the highlighted new aspects of Oracle SOA Suite are: Adapters to connect from on-premise to in-the-cloud – specifically targeting SalesForce, RightNow and also providing an SDK to create custom integrations into the cloud (the first cloud adapters will be released on 11g, before the end of the year) Mobile enablement by exposing RESTful services that communicate using JSON as well as adding the capability to call out to such services (12c functionality) Enhanced functionality on Exalogic (of course it runs faster on Exalogic, up to 20 times) Modular runtime with a lighter footprint.
