• Set up development site on another server/host

  I'm developing a site for a client. They've got a site now that's hosted at hosting.com. I'm going to move them to my VM hosting solution at edge web but I want to run some tests and have the client approve the site before changing the name servers to the new site/hosting location. How do I make this happen? I'm running a red hat/Apache on linux for the edge web hosting. I don't have control of the domain name (i.e. the client controls that right now). Edgeweb has set up a dns zone for the domain name so that when the time comes to switch we're ready to go. I'm a web developer and I understand the technologies that make a user experience 'work' but I'm unfamiliar with the server jargon and all that so, please be patient. Thanks in advance.

• foobar.com working, but www.foobar.com not working?

  I am setting up a web site for a client. She is using GoDaddy for domain registration, and a hosting company I have never used before. After setting up the nameservers on GoDaddy's side, the address foobar.com (for example) is correctly directing to the new site. However, the address www.foobar.com is redirecting to a 404 page on the hosting company's side. I've been dealing with customer service on the hosting side, and they have told me various things including wait for DNS propagation (which has obviously happened since the 404 page is on their side), and to make sure that the nameservers on GoDaddy's side were entered in lower case instead of upper case (which I know doesn't matter since nameservers are case insensitive). I think I'm getting the runaround from the hosting company, but the client had signed up with them before I came to the project, so if possible I'd like to resolve this issue with them before we start treating it as a loss. Does anybody know what could cause foobar.com to resolve correctly but www.foobar.com to not resolve? How would I best be able to suggest a fix to this through the technical support channels of a hosting company?

  Couple of years ago a reliable and decent performing Windows hosting was not affordable to many enthusiastic developers who want to try a startup idea or build a hobby site. Mainly, I've been hosting them on Heroku, because of the free tier and the ease of git-enabled application updating. I have seen that a lot of Django users prefer Webfaction. I looked through their offerings, and they seem to me like a standard web hosting service. Questions: Why might be webfaction considered a good hosting service for Django apps? If Heroku is generally called a "Platform-as-a-Service," what does that make Webfaction? Does it have any important similiarities/distinctions from Heroku that I might somehow be missing?

• Run server side script

  I'm in the process of deploying my first website which is written is ASP.NET. I need to run a server side script at set intervals during the day which updates a database even if there is nobody using the site. I was led to believe that using Windows task scheduler would be the best option but now I've joined a hosting company the layout is not really how I was expecting. It's a shared hosting with basic FTP and no apparent built in task scheduler. The hosting company support is not very good and haven't been able to advise how I could do this so hoped to get help here on options before I consider changing company.   Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? In case you want to skip to the crux of my inquiry just read the bold type. I just finished my CS degree (at 39 years old :-)). For my final project I designed and built a system that can provide local positioning / location awareness to mobile wifi devices (only have Android client thus far). The server receives data from clients, processes it, and responds to the clients with a messages containing information about their respective locations. I would like to continue the project (perhaps release as open source but that is a different discussion). Thus far my server application has been running on the CS department's hardware where I could pretty much do whatever I wanted. I'm getting kicked off that system in a few weeks so I have to find a new home for my server application. I need a host that will let me run my Java server (along w/ mySQL db) -- preferably on the cheap since I haven't yet got a job. I have very little experience with the "real world" of web development / hosting. I'm having trouble figuring out what kind of hosting service will let me run my application as is. If that turns out to be a tall order then I need to know what my options are for changing thing so that I can get up and running with some hosting. As an aside, I'm also researching whether or not I should rewrite this in a different language. Trying to figure out if there is a substantially better (for whatever reason) one for what I'm doing. This might also potentially have a bearing on my hosting needs. One possibility is to write the server in something more widely accepted by hosting services. I have been searching for answers to my question and haven't found quite what I'm looking for. Part of the problem might be that I don't know exactly what terminology to use. If there is a good answer to this question elsewhere please feel free to point me towards it. Thanks for help / advice.

We used GoDaddy as our registrar and we use it for DNS for some domains. Tomorrow is a new day - what can we do to mitigate such outages? Simply moving to, say, Route 53 for DNS might not be enough. Is there any way to remove this single point of failure?

• host and share files in my hosting

  I currently have a domain+hosting with unlimited hosting space for our website. On the other hand, I use Dropbox to share our organizational files and photos between about 10 users. The thing is that sharing photos uses too much space for what a free Dropbox account offers. So I am thinking of taking advantage of my hosting space, but using FTP seems not to be ideal for users who are not too skilled with computers. In addition, it doesn't handle versions in case some user makes a mess of it. And using a public FTP to upload and giving them only download permission doesn't seem a good idea as I am only the CTO. So what I want is basically to implement a local Dropbox for a few users, but I'd prefer something that is not too complex to install/mantain. Thank you a lot.

  I decided to post this because I battled to find out how to do it and couldnt see anything on Stackoverflow about it. Often when you host with a provider like GoDaddy, they have "Custom Error Messages" set to ON. What I didnt realise was that the web.config settings dont just apply to ASP.NET, they apply to all applications on YOUR IIS site and hence will sort this problem out for Classic ASP as well (very few GoDaddy support people even know this) All you need to do is add the following to your web.config OR, for those using Classic ASP, just create a web.config file in your ROOT with this code in it. <configuration> <system.webServer> <asp scriptErrorSentToBrowser="true"/> <httpErrors errorMode="Detailed"/> </system.webServer> </configuration>

  I'm not asking for any host recommendations, those are covered in other questions. What are some good pre sales questions for asp.net shared hosting? They never seem to answer all the questions in their feature lists. So far I have a few: dedicated application pool? sql server management studio supported? Is tunneling required? can I reset my application pool in the control panel? are php and perl fully supported as well? are subdomains supported, and will I need a routing script in the root or are they routed automatically? etc. Developers have a critical need for good hosting to stage applications. I think this is absolutely developer related and don't want the question on serverfault.

• Starfield Wildcard SSL Certificate Not Trusted in All Browsers

  I am at a loss as to what else I might try in order to debug this issue with a Starfield Wildcard SSL Certificate. The problem is that in certain browsers (Safari or the most-updated chrome you can get for OS X 10.5.8 for example) the certificate comes up as untrusted, even on the root domain. My server setup / background info: General LAMP setup - CentOS 6.3 - on a Godaddy VPS Starfield Technologies Wildcard SSL certificate Installed using the instructions from godaddy's support pages ssl.conf lines are basically as follows: SSLCertificateFile /path/to/cert/mysite.com.cert SSLCertificateKeyFile /path/to/cert/mysite.key SSLCertificateChainFile /path/to/cert/sf_bundle.crt Everything seemingly worked fine until the other night when I noticed the problem in OS X, I assume it's more browser version related, but have only been able to replicate it on that particular machine. What I have tried: Updating sf_bundle.crt from godaddy's cert repository and Starfield's repository versions Following This ServerFault answer from Jim Phares - changing the ChainFile line to sf_intermediate.crt from Starfield's repository Using http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html on my url It says the domain is correctly listed on the certificate but comes up with an error that reads The certificate is not trusted in all web browsers. You may need to install an Intermediate/chain certificate to link it to a trusted root certificate. What might I try next to remedy the untrusted certificate issue? Let me know if there is any other information needed that might help debugging this issue. Thanks in advance!
