  • Newbie question about Java

    - by Rob Nicholson
Okay, I know that Java is a language but somebody has asked me if they can write a web application to interface in with a web app I've written in ASP.NET. I'm implementing a web service to serve up an XML so it's pretty language agnostic. However, I'm not 100% sure whether going down the Java route makes a lot of sense. I was kind of expecting PHP or ASP.NET server side code with maybe some Ajax/JavaScript or maybe a heavier client JavaScript program using JScript. Could some kind sole explain the basic Java environment when it comes with webapps. I've inferred the following - am I barking up the right tree? Java when run like ASP.NET is called JSP JavaBeans is a bit like the .NET framework, i.e. it's a library of re-usable components Java EE is a bit like ASP.NET in that it's a framework for building web pages on a server Java can also run on the client but it needs the Java VM installing When running Java on the client, can you use JavaBeans and is there a framework? Can it also use JScript? I don't think so as JScript is JavaScript library. Whilst running Java on the server would be okay, this is a relatively small application and therefore Java sounds like a bit of overkill. PHP or ASP.NET feels a better fit. But I don't think they should go down the Java applet in the browser and it adds complexity that's not needed. Thanks, Rob.

  • What is html5 canvas?

    - by Dan
I'm a little confused to what html5 canvas is. I've been told it is javascript, but it seems to be a much bigger deal? What makes it different than javascript? Why is it so amazing? Does it do other things than javascript? Thanks, Dan

  • How to build a java applet?

    - by Stefano Borini
Most of the tutorials around explain how to create a java applet: create a .java file with a class, compile it with javac, put the .class somewhere, add a proper tag in the html. However, I'm not able to find anything about the best practices to build and release a complex applet, made of multiple classes and with additional libraries. How is the build/release process for this case ? What is it needed to go from my java project to the final .jar to put on the web ? I'm working with pure Eclipse, no plugins.

  • SQLiteDataAdapter Fill exception C# ADO.NET

    - by Lirik
I'm trying to use the OleDb CSV parser to load some data from a CSV file and insert it into a SQLite database, but I get an exception with the OleDbAdapter.Fill method and it's frustrating: An unhandled exception of type 'System.Data.ConstraintException' occurred in System.Data.dll Additional information: Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints. Here is the source code: public void InsertData(String csvFileName, String tableName) { String dir = Path.GetDirectoryName(csvFileName); String name = Path.GetFileName(csvFileName); using (OleDbConnection conn = new OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + dir + @";Extended Properties=""Text;HDR=No;FMT=Delimited""")) { conn.Open(); using (OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM " + name, conn)) { QuoteDataSet ds = new QuoteDataSet(); adapter.Fill(ds, tableName); // <-- Exception here InsertData(ds, tableName); // <-- Inserts the data into the my SQLite db } } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { SQLiteDatabase target = new SQLiteDatabase(); string csvFileName = "D:\\Innovations\\Finch\\dev\\DataFeed\\YahooTagsInfo.csv"; string tableName = "Tags"; target.InsertData(csvFileName, tableName); Console.ReadKey(); } } The "YahooTagsInfo.csv" file looks like this: tagId,tagName, description, colName, dataType, realTime 1,s,Symbol,symbol,VARCHAR,FALSE 2,c8,After Hours Change, afterhours,DOUBLE,TRUE 3,g3,Annualized Gain, annualizedGain,DOUBLE,FALSE 4,a,Ask,ask,DOUBLE,FALSE 5,a5,Ask Size, askSize,DOUBLE,FALSE 6,a2,Average Daily Volume, avgDailyVolume,DOUBLE,FALSE 7,b,Bid,bid,DOUBLE,FALSE 8,b6,Bid Size, bidSize,DOUBLE,FALSE 9,b4,Book Value, bookValue,DOUBLE,FALSE I've tried the following: Removing the first line in the CSV file so it doesn't confuse it for real data. Changing the TRUE/FALSE realTime flag to 1/0. I've tried 1 and 2 together (i.e. removed the first line and changed the flag). None of these things helped... One constraint is that the tagId is supposed to be unique. Here is what the table look like in design view: Can anybody help me figure out what is the problem here?

  • iTunes Visualizer Plugin in C# - Energy Function

    - by James D
Hi, iTunes Visualizer plugin in C#. Easiest way to compute the "energy level" for a particular sample? I looked at this writeup on beat detection over at GameDev and have had some success with it (I'm not doing beat detection per se, but it's relevant). But ultimately I'm looking for a stupid-as-possible, quick-and-dirty approach for demo purposes. For those who aren't familiar with how iTunes structures visualization data, basically you're given this: struct VisualPluginData { /* SNIP */ RenderVisualData renderData; UInt32 renderTimeStampID; UInt8 minLevel[kVisualMaxDataChannels]; // 0-128 UInt8 maxLevel[kVisualMaxDataChannels]; // 0-128 }; struct RenderVisualData { UInt8 numWaveformChannels; UInt8 waveformData[kVisualMaxDataChannels][kVisualNumWaveformEntries]; // 512-point FFT UInt8 numSpectrumChannels; UInt8 spectrumData[kVisualMaxDataChannels][kVisualNumSpectrumEntries]; }; Ideally, I'd like an approach that a beginning programmer with little to no DSP experience could grasp and improve on. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • In python, what is the fastest way to determine if a string is an email or an integer?

    - by ensnare
I'd like to be able to pull users from a database using either a supplied e-mail address or the user id (an integer). To do this, I have to detect if the supplied string is an integer, or an e-mail. Looking for the fastest way to do this. Thanks. def __init__(self, data): #populate class data self._fetchInfo(data) def _fetchInfo(self, data): #If an email #SELECT ... WHERE email = 'data' #or if a user_id #SELECT ... WHERE id = 'data' #Fill class attributes self._id = row['id'] self._email = row['id'] ...

  • Stack / base pointers in assembly

    - by flyingcrab
I know this topic has been covered ad-naseum here, and other places on the internet - but hopefully the question is a simple one as I try to get my head around assembly... So if i understand correctly the ebp (base pointer) will point to the top of the stack, and the esp (stack pointer) will point to the bottom -- since the stack grows downward. esp therefore points to the 'current location'. So on a function call, once you've saved the ebp on the stack you insert a new stack frame - for the function. So in the case of the image below, if you started from N-3 you would go to N-2 with a function call. But when you are at N-2 - is your ebp == 25 and the esp == 24 (at least initially, before any data is placed on the stack)? Is this correct or am I of on a tangent here? Thanks!

  • SQLiteDataAdapter Update method returning 0 C#

    - by Lirik
I loaded 83 rows from my CSV file, but when I try to update the SQLite database I get 0 rows... I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. The program outputs: Num rows loaded is 83 Num rows updated is 0 The source code is: public void InsertData(String csvFileName, String tableName) { String dir = Path.GetDirectoryName(csvFileName); String name = Path.GetFileName(csvFileName); using (OleDbConnection conn = new OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + dir + @";Extended Properties=""Text;HDR=Yes;FMT=Delimited\""")) { conn.Open(); using (OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM " + name, conn)) { QuoteDataSet ds = new QuoteDataSet(); adapter.Fill(ds, tableName); Console.WriteLine("Num rows loaded is " + ds.Tags.Rows.Count); InsertData(ds, tableName); } } } public void InsertData(QuoteDataSet data, String tableName) { using (SQLiteConnection conn = new SQLiteConnection(_connectionString)) { using (SQLiteDataAdapter sqliteAdapter = new SQLiteDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM " + tableName, conn)) { using (new SQLiteCommandBuilder(sqliteAdapter)) { conn.Open(); Console.WriteLine("Num rows updated is " + sqliteAdapter.Update(data, tableName)); } } } } Any hints on why it's not updating the correct number of rows?

  • Eclipse IDE's Hello World Cheatsheet seems to have a mistake

    - by Sean
Hey guys, Just a warning: I'm completely new to Java and am trying to teach myself Android programming. I installed the Eclipse IDE today and tried to walk through the first Java Hello World "cheat sheet," and it didn't work! I was really quite surprised. When it asked me to select the checkbox to create the main() method, there wasn't anything on-screen that looked like a checkbox with "main()" or "method" next to it, so I guessed that maybe what they meant was the "Modifiers" radio button. So I left that checked for "public." It didn't compile and I got red X's next to every folder in my Package Explorer. Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks!

  • Converting from a string to boolean in Python?

    - by Joan Venge
Does anyone know how to do convert from a string to a boolean in Python? I found this link. But it doesn't look like a proper way to do it. I.e. using a built in functionality, etc. EDIT: The reason I asked this is because I learned int("string"), from here. I tried bool ("string") but always got True.

  • add/remove items in a list

    - by Jam
I'm trying to create a player who can add and remove items from their inventory. I have everything working, I just have 1 small problem. Every time it prints the inventory, 'None' also appears. I've been messing with it to try and remove that, but no matter what I do, 'None' always appears in the program! I know I'm just missing something simple, but I can't figure it out for the life of me. class Player(object): def __init__(self, name, max_items, items): self.name=name self.max_items=max_items self.items=items def inventory(self): for item in self.items: print item def take(self, new_item): if len(self.items)<self.max_items: self.items.append(new_item) else: print "You can't carry any more items!" def drop(self, old_item): if old_item in self.items: self.items.remove(old_item) else: print "You don't have that item." def main(): player=Player("Jimmy", 5, ['sword', 'shield', 'ax']) print "Max items:", player.max_items print "Inventory:", player.inventory() choice=None while choice!="0": print \ """ Inventory Man 0 - Quit 1 - Add an item to inventory 2 - Remove an item from inventory """ choice=raw_input("Choice: ") print if choice=="0": print "Good-bye." elif choice=="1": new_item=raw_input("What item would you like to add to your inventory?") player.take(new_item) print "Inventory:", player.inventory() elif choice=="2": old_item=raw_input("What item would you like to remove from your inventory?") player.drop(old_item) print "Inventory:", player.inventory() else: print "\nSorry, but", choice, "isn't a valid choice." main() raw_input("Press enter to exit.")
