  • Does anyone do hardware benchmarks on compiling code?

    I've seen a bunch of sites that benchmark new hardware on gaming performance, zipping some files, encoding a movie, or whatever. Are there any that test the impact of new hardware (like SSDs, new CPUs, RAM speeds, or whatever) on compile and link speeds, either linux or windows? It'd be really good to find out what mattered the most for compile speed and be able to focus on that, instead of just extrapolating from other benchmarks.

  • Staggering java linux process startup to prevent OOM

    I am running a number of java processes on a single Linux machine. From a memory and computing standpoint, everything is fine when things are static. However, periodically we use a configuration management package up upgrade the jar or war files, and restart the java process. The problem is, that is restarts them all relatively quickly, and so we get 10 or so java VMs restarting all at the same time (we use daemontools for the service stops/starts), which wreaks havoc on the machine, in terms of OOMs or just really slow. This is because it's spawning the JVM 10x at the same time. Other than trying to stagger the startups, is there a smarter way of handling this? Maybe a sysctl tuning performance parameters, or a JVM parameter?

  • Slap the App on the VM for every private cloud solution! Really ?

    One of the key attractions of the general session "Managing Enterprise Private Cloud" at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 was an interactive role play depicting how to address some of the key challenges of planning, deploying and managing an enterprise private cloud. It was a face-off between Don DeVM, IT manager at a fictitious enterprise 'Vulcan' and Ed Muntz, the Enterprise Manager hero .   Don DeVM is really excited about the efficiency and cost savings from virtualization. The success he enjoyed from the infrastructure virtualization made him believe that for all cloud service delivery models ( database, testing or applications as-a-service ), he has a single solution - slap the app on the VM and here you go . However, Ed Muntz believes in delivering cloud services that allows the business units and enterprise users to manage the complete lifecycle of the cloud services they are providing, for example, setting up cloud, provisioning it to users through a self-service portal ,  managing and tuning the performance, monitoring and applying patches for database or applications.     I got a warning message: jvm uses the client vm, make sure to run java with the server vm for best performance by adding -server to the command line In fact, when i run java -version i get: OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.3.2) (7u7-2.3.2a-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) OpenJDK Client VM (build 23.2-b09, mixed mode, sharing) How does one go about and change OpenJDK's defaults to always start under the server VM?

  • information about /proc/pid/sched

    Not sure this is the right place for this question, but here goes: I'm trying to make some sense of the /proc/pid/sched and /proc/pid/task/tid/sched files for a highly threaded server process, however I was not able to find a good explanation of how to interpret this file ( just a few bits here: http://knol.google.com/k/linux-performance-tuning-and-measurement# ) . I assume this entry in procfs is related to newer versions of the kernel that run with the CFS scheduler? CentOS distro running on a 2.6.24.7-149.el5rt kernel version with preempt rt patch. Any thoughts?

  • How to tune touchpad for smaller area?

    I just purchased the Asus Zenbook UX31A and I require some advice regarding tuning the touchpad. Basically my problem is that the mouse buttons are withing the touch area and I would like it to be disabled. Such that only part of the touch area is recognized. I have attached an image to clarify the idea. Basically only the red area in the image should be recognized. I have two reasons for this request. Firstly, I like to hold my thumb on the mouse button instead of holding it in the air. This is problematic, because touchpad thinks that I'm trying some kind of two finger gesture all the time and cursor stops moving. Clicking is also problematic since every finger movement -- regardless of how insignificant it might be -- on the "button" will move the cursor. I have been playing with some synclient settings like AreaBottomEdge etc. They have some effect but then I cannot highlight text or right button stops working. How could I solve this?

    fprintf() does buffered I/O, where as write() does unbuffered I/O. So once the write() completes, the data is in the file, whereas, for fprintf() it may take a while for the file to get updated to reflect the output. This results in a significant performance difference - the write works at disk speed. A large difference. There's three tests in this example, the third test uses fprintf() and fflush(). This is equivalent to write() both in performance and in functionality. Which leads to the suggestion that fprintf() (and other buffering I/O functions) are the fastest way of writing to files, and that fflush() should be used to enforce synchronisation of the file contents.

  • Telugu (unicode) font rendering in emacs

    I sometimes edit text in telugu language. However, when I open the file (UTF-8 encoded) in GNU emacs (version 23.1.50.1 on Ubuntu Jaunty) the text rendering is incorrect. The same text file opened in gedit is rendered correctly. Here's a snippet: ????????? ???? ???? ???????? rendred in gedit: And, the emacs rendering of the same text: Wherever glyphs need to be composited (not sure if it's the right word), emacs (or whatever library it uses) is not doing it right. Is there anyway to fix this? Perhaps tuning some setting in my configuration? Any ideas, please?

    Hello Everyone, The big news in this edition of our Oracle Certification E-Magazine is related to a change in the way that exam results are provided at the end of the test (using our CertView tool). This significant process change for the Oracle program sets the stage for tighter integration of candidate information and exam/certifcation results. Additionally, it helps give every certification holder access to important tools available in CertView. The new process was implemented in November and so far it is going very well.
