  • Which language should I learn to create a sudoku game?

    I'd like to learn a new programming language, something besides all the scripting languages I've used for the past many years (Ruby, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, bash). I figured it might be interesting to make a sudoku game since there are plenty of documented algorithms and it only requires fairly simple data structures. It might start out as either a generator or a solver of puzzles, not necessarily both and not necessarily with a GUI. My goal is primarily to learn some new programming concepts beyond MVC and UI design, secondarily for this thing to be pretty fast. Is there a language that particularly shines for these sorts of constraint satisfaction problems? Is it suited to a functional language like Haskell or a highly concurrent language like Erlang (say for solving puzzles much larger than 9 x 9)? Or is this question mostly meaningless?

  • How do I create and populate a non-uniformly structured array in PHP?

    I am trying to decide on a data structure for an array that has a date for the key and the amount of bandwidth consumed as values. examples Key Consumed Policy October 50 Basic November 75 Basic December 100 Basic Some months, but not all, will have more than one policy. In that case, I need break them down by policy once the total is shown. So for the above example, assume December had 3 policies. The table i construct from my array would then need to show: Key Consumed Policy October 50 Basic November 75 Basic December 100 .. December 25 Basic December 25 Extended December 50 Premium Could all this data be represented in an array ? $myArray['december'] would be a different data structure than the others because it would need a last entry, probably another array, that had the policy names as keys and the amount of data consumed as values. Does PHP allow for arrays that are not structured uniformly? i.e. key october and November have only 2 entries under their key while December has 2 entries plus a 3rd which is an additional array. My best guess is something like: Array ( [October] => "50", "Basic" [November] => "75", "Basic" [December] => "100", "..", Array( [Basic] => 25 [Extended] =>25 [Premium] => 50 ) ) My question is if this is possible and how to declare it and populate it with values with PHP. I would like to make this control act like a text box with cursors and features like typing in from keyboard. Right now I use an invisible text box with a formattedtext control to act like that. But the cursor position always creates a problem when the size of the text is not equal to the size of the rendered text as shape. Can anyone please show the way to achieve this.

For the record, ItemSummaries and NumberedInventories are both derived from the same base class DataBuilderBase. I can't figure out the syntax that will allow me to do ItemSumms.FillRows and numInvs.FillRows in the method. FillRows is declared as Public Overridable Sub FillRows in the base class.     Alright, so here's my dilemma. I've got these two "slides" lined up, one ready to be passed into view. I have it working and all, but I can scroll over to the right to see the second slide! How could I have it you can only view the one slide? But. If you reload, you can see that you can scroll to the right of the screen and view the second slide prematurely, which is just not going to work for me. I still need to achieve the same seamless transition, but you must only be able to view one slide at a time. Also, I plan to expand with more slides, so if you're feeling lucky today, I'd really love to see an example of how I could support multiple frames. I'm very new to JavaScript (yet I know syntax rules, and general coding knowledge from other languages), so the better you explain, the more knowledgeable I can be, and I'd be very grateful for that.     I am new to using Windows Forms in C++ (and just in general), and I am not exactly sure of the name or if it's even possible to do. Currently I am currently working on a school project in which we must make a program for an imaginary bookstore. I am trying right now to make a sort of list that shows what the "customer" is buying. I have to make it sort by price and ISBN and any other variable that the book has. In essence I am trying to make something like the following: I just need to know how to get started. I can't figure out what the name of the control is or how to even get it to sort every time the user clicks on the header.

  • best way to access/create SITE_ROOT and SERVER_ROOT values in PHP?

    I need 2 different paths, one for includes and one for js/css etc. I'm using mod_rewrite. The below works fine.... Currently all my files contain this at the top define('SERVER_ROOT', 'C:/wamp/www/site_folder/'); define('SITE_ROOT', 'http://localhost/site_folder/'); and then files are called like so: require_once SERVER_ROOT . 'st_wd_assets/inc/func_st_wd.php'; <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="<?php echo SITE_ROOT;?>st_pages/user_area/css/user_area.css" media="screen"/> as you can probably see, it's going to be a massive chore to update the top of every file everytime i move versions between the localhost and my live server. What's the best/standard way of defining these ROOT values? I can't see a solution in the $_SERVER super global? Do people normally just use VirtualHosts? But then wouldn't it still be necessary to define ROOT constants?

The problem is that I already have the regular size defined as a simple product. Now, I want to add a smaller size as well, that can be chosen from the same product page, and I need to set the weight of the smaller size, so postage is calculated properly. Any suggestions?     Hello, This question doesn't relate only to MouseEvent.CLICK event type but to all event types that already exist in AS3. I read a lot about custom events but until now I couldn't figure it out how to do what I want to do. I'm going to try to explain, I hope you understand: Here is a illustration of my situation: for(var i:Number; i < 10; i++){ var someVar = i; myClips[i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, doSomething); } function doSomething(e:MouseEvent){ /* */ } But I want to be able to pass someVar as a parameter to doSomething. So I tried this: for(var i:Number; i < 10; i++){ var someVar = i; myClips[i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, function(){ doSomething(someVar); }); } function doSomething(index){ trace(index); } This kind of works but not as I expect. Due to the function closures, when the MouseEvent.CLICK events are actually fired the for loop is already over and someVar is holding the last value, the number 9 in the example. So every click in each movie clip will call doSomething passing 9 as the parameter. And it's not what I want. I thought that creating a custom event should work, but then I couldn't find a way to fire a custom event when the MouseEvent.CLICK event is fired and pass the parameter to it. Now I don't know if it is the right answer. What should I do and how?

I know I could specify all Bar and Baz but if there are 20 of these, I'd like to not have to manage them and rather just have what I did above for creating the map. Is this possible?

    I have an Action that basically adds an item to a cart, the only way the cart is known is by checking the cookie, here is the flow of logic, please let me know if you see any issue... /order/add/[id] is called via GET action checks for cookie, if no cookie found, it makes a new cart, writes the identifier to the cookie, and adds the item to the database with a relation to the cart created if cookie is found, it gets the cart identifier from the cookie, gets the cart object, adds the item to the database with a relation to the cart found so it's basically like... action add(int id){ if(cookie is there) cart = getcart(cookievalue) else cart = makecart() createcookie(cart.id) additemtocart(cart.id, id) return "success"; } Seem right? I can't really thing of another way that would make sense.

The is no need for authentification or nothing (that is made by LAN Radius). So, the question is...
