• WPF: Hidden parent and visible child

  As of last night, I decided to start learning about WPF and have been reading through a number of online tutorials and books. This is a huge shift. One feature that has fascinated me is the implicit property value inheritance. I know in the WinForms world, if a control is not visible then neither are any of the child controls. Same seems to be true in the WPF world, as expected. I wondered if explicitly setting the child control's Visibility property would allow for an invisible parent and visible child and it did not. Is this something that would be possible in WPF? Can you have a container control that is hidden with visible children? This is more an exercise of curiosity than anything. I'm still trying to wrap my head around a lot of what I've been reading.

• How do I make a background thread in Java that allows the main application to exit completely? This

  I have a Java application that creates a new thread to do some work. I can launch the new thread with no problems. When the "main" program terminates, I want the thread I created to keep running - which it does... But the problem is, when I run the main application from Eclipse or from Ant under Windows, control doesn't return unless the background process is killed. If I fork the main java process in ant, I want control to return to ant once the main thread is done with its work... But as it is, ant continues to wait until both the main process and the created thread are both terminated. How do I launch the thread in the background such that control will return to ant when the "main" application is finished? (By the way, when I run the same application under Linux, I am able to do this with no problems).

Some participants of our project often have slow Internet connection (for example during travel), and therefore it is important for us to have a source control system that does not consume too much traffic. I was unable to find information on traffic consumption when using TFS 2010. Does anyone has such info? Does TFS 2010 support traffic compression? Do other source control systems (like SVN, for example) produce less or more traffic than TFS 2010?

  I have a control with white text foreground color and transparent background color. Later on this usercontrol will be added into a different control that carries the real background color. However during designing this, control due white foreground on white background in VS 2010, I can't obviously see anything. In there anyway to define a different color for just the design time? I am wondering about the following questions: Is it true that when these peripheral devices are plugged onto the computer, the addresses(port numbers) of their control registers are thus determined by how they are attached to the address bus (i.e. the hard-wiring rules, not any soft things)? Who makes the scheme of the port number assignment? If I was given a naked computer(with no operating system and with many peripheral devices), how could I figure out the port number assignment so I can use them to control peripheral deveices.   I'm currently writing a tiny webapp for my HTPC (actually, a PC serving as both a media player and web- / fileserver) that will allow me to remotely control the playing of audio, without having to turn on my TV just to switch songs. I'm using Windows Media Player as my audio player of choice, and I thought I could control it through PHP's COM Class. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find any documentation or examples on controlling WMP through this interface. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? A second (and much less preferable) solution would be to use PHP's exec() call to start batch files that, in turn, control WMP.

I don't like the 'hover only' expand/collapse style of the ASP.NET Menu control on its own, and I don't like the 'icon-click only' expand/collapse style of the TreeView control on its own. I plan on trying the CSS Control Adapters, to render the menu with some self-respect, i.e. as nested <ul> or <ol> elements instead of the usual orgy of tables. Beyond that, I need something to give a bit of style and menulike behaviour to these nested lists, and I would prefer a jQuery plugin for this. Which should I use?

  I am trying to retrieve file path for a html file that is embedded in resource (resx file) in VS2008 C# project. I want to give path of this file to native webbrowser control (PIEHtml) to be able to navigate (DTM_NAVIGATE) in my application. I know I can pass the string to this control using DTM_ADDTEXTW but since html text size is so big, I dont want to pass string to the control. I need to somehow extract the file path for this html file embedded inside resource manager. I tried using but this does not give the file path of html inside assembly: private ResourceManager resManager = new ResourceManager("AppName.FolderName.FileName", System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); this.lbl.Text = resManager.GetString("StringInResources"); and also read Retrieving Resources in Satellite Assemblies but it did not solve my problem. Ideally the page would render with a player control so the user can start/stop the audio linked to the database record (audio files are in a folder not the db). I have a controller action like this: Response.Clear(); Response.ContentType = "audio/wav"; Response.TransmitFile(audioFilename); Response.End(); return Response; and the view uses the RenderAction method <% Html.RenderAction("ServeAudioFile"); %> this works but it won't display inline on the existing view, it opens a new page with just the media control. Am I totally barking up the wrong tree or is there a way to embed the response in the existing view? works exactly as I would like but I can't control access to the file.

• Is it bad practice to assign a css class for the sole purpose of finding it with jQuery?

  I'm using ASP.NET, not the newest one with that clientIdMode stuff. So, the control ids are generated and funky. There are lots of ways of passing ids around, but lately I've been assigning a 'fake' css class to the control I'm interested in. Then in a js file I use jQuery to find the control. Is this bad practice? It seems a lot like the ajaxControlToolkit's behaviorId to me... Is the behaviorId bad practice as well?

• Lining up the text in a tool tip, with the text in a combobox

  I see a lot of programs where if the text doesn't fit inside the bounds of the control, you can put your mouse over the control and the tooltip text will show you the full unclipped text, and also the tooltip text lines up completly with the text in the control. I'm trying to do that with a combobox in VB 2005 (.net version 2.0). In the tooltip draw event I've tried setting the tooltip location to the location of the AssociatedControl.DisplayRectangle, and the AssociatedControl.ClientRectangle. Each of these seem to put the tooltip text in the top left corner of the combobox, just slightly offset from the text in the combobox. Is there some type of padding I need to account for? or what's going on here?

  I'm trying to hide all panels on a page, when a button click occurs. This is on a web content form, within a master page. The contentplageholder is named: MainContent So I have: foreach (Control c in Page.Form.FindControl("MainContent").Controls) { if (c is Panel) { c.Visible = false; } } This never find any panels. The panels are within an Update Panel, and I tried foreach(Control c in updatePanel.Controls) { } and this didn't work either. I also tried : foreach(Control c in Page.Controls) { } and that didn't work either. Any idea what I'm missing here?

  I've seen in WPF where you can bind control values to properties of other controls. How is that binding accomplished in C++? For example, if I have a class called Car and a guage control called RPM, how do I tie the value of RPM to the member variable Car.RPM, so that when Car.RPM changes, it is automatically (as in without a specific update call coded by me) reflected by the RPM control? General answers or directions to pertinent resources would be fine also, as I'm just beginning to dabble in C++ and haven't had much Google luck with this particular question.

• Wired connection not being recognized

  I'm on Ubuntu Maverick (10.10). I've read a few threads regarding wired connection problems, but haven't found a solution yet. The problem appears after I connect to a wireless network. When I disconnect wireless and plug in an internet cable, the wired connection is not recognized at all. Even the socket appears dead (there are no diodes flashing). The only solution so far seems to be restarting the computer. Network Manager then tries to connect to a Wi-Fi, but the wired connection is listed and working. I've tried sudo restart network-manager, but that doesn't solve anything. After a while, available wireless networks start appearing, but the wired still doesn't. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Out of these settings, a few will be used in master page, few on my Page and few in my user control (say login control which is a web user control). I've an entity class MySetting for it and there is a method in my data access layer which returns me an instance of MySetting when I pass the value I got in query string. I don't want to fetch settings from the database multiple times for one request. I'm using asp.net web forms with C# and sql server.

• CDateTimeCtrl - preventing 'focus' change when setting date

  I'd like to use a CDateTimeCtrl to allow the user to select a non-weekend date. So, if the user increments the day (via a keypress) - and the resulting day is found to fall on a weekend - then the control should skip forward to the following Monday (don't let issues about month changes distract you, it's not relevant). Usually it's not a problem: when I handle the DTN_DATETIMECHANGE notification I can check the new date/time and if it's found to be a weekend then I can call SetTime on the control to update the date. However, if I set the style to DTS_SHOWNONE, this call to SetTime causes the control to shift the input 'focus' (term used loosely) to the 'none' checkbox, e.g. away from the day field. This prevents the user from using keyboard input to continue incrementing the date unless they subsequently use the right arrow key to reset the 'focus', which is just nasty. I would dearly like to prevent this focus shift from occurring. Is it even possible?
